CeeLo Green, who Twitter fans compared to a mean and unlean Ferrero Rocher, was promoting a new single as his alter ego, Gnarly Davidson, while electronica artist Jacqueline Van Bierk took Corinne Bailey Rae’s song “Put Your Records On” literally with an Andre Soriano tulle gown dotted with her favourite CDs. Jackson and Snoddy have been loved-up on social media, posting beach-holiday photos and a steamy pic of them kissing on her 18th birthday in September. Over already? Firefighter Andrew reveals the truth behind his bond with salon manager Cheryl

‘MARRIEIDGHT’ AT FIRSTKSNEW SHOC PLE COU

IT’S THE UNION FANS OF MARRIED at First Sight were wishing for: 38-year-old firefighter Andrew (whose “wife,” Lauren, left him on the wedding night) starting a relationship with 25-year-old Cheryl (who discovered her “husband” had been texting another “wife” from the show). But is the pairing too good to be true? Fellow contestants Anthony and Sharon seemed to think so, expressing their hesitation about the age difference and Cheryl’s motivations for re-entering the experiment at an explosive dinner party that aired on Nine on Feb. 14. But Andrew, for one, is glad, telling WHO their alarm bells made him “curious” and forced him to question his relationship. Andrew had “doubts about Cheryl. Goodlooking girls don’t often come up to guys like me.”

“I was confused as to why everyone was so sceptical of the situation. It took a little bit of the shine away from how positive I thought things were going,” says Andrew. Although he had been having a “pleasant time” with his date, rather than take her side he listened to Anthony and Sharon, who hinted Cheryl may have been motivated by fame. “They were trying to tell me that Cheryl wasn’t the girl I’d hoped she might have been,” says Andrew. While aggression at the dinner party got out of hand, he says he’s “100 per cent glad it came up because it gave me an early warning.” Despite those doubts, the former teacher decided to continue with the experiment because “I had nothing to lose,” but is keeping a lid on his expectations: “I thought, ‘Am I really going to meet someone amazing on a show like this?’ ” n

BETRAYED AGAIN!

Lauren ran out on him on their wedding night, but there was more betrayal in store for Andrew. Despite keeping in touch after filming by “texting and speaking every now and then,” he says Lauren failed to tell him about rekindling a relationship with a man she met before filming. “A part of me is annoyed she wasted my time,” he tells WHO.

Cheryl was originally paired with Jonathan.

“It’s so easy,” says Cheryl of her time with Andrew.

The fairytale no longer seems possible, the Oscar winner concedes after three divorces

DISILLUSIONED WITH MARRIAGE, Halle Berry opened up about her divorces in a Q&A in Los Angeles on Feb. 11. “I have learned to deal with three failed marriages, which has not been easy, especially when there’s children involved,” says the actress, 50. Women “go into marriage thinking it’s going to last forever and that this is our prince on a shiny horse,” she said. “That’s what fairytales taught me as a kid.” In December her divorce from French actor Olivier Martinez, 51, was finalised—they have 3-year-old son Maceo, and she has 8-year-old daughter Nahla with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, 40. (In 2012 Martinez and Aubry came to blows after tensions over Berry’s wish to move Nahla to France). Berry was married to musician Eric Benét, 50, from 2001 to 2005, and baseball player David Justice, 50, from 1992 to 1997. Although the star in 2010 called herself a “hopeless romantic,” she’s “anti-fairytales” today. “But we go in there with that hope, so when it falls apart it feels like a huge failure and a huge disappointment. I’ve often felt guilty and responsible,” she added. “Right now, being Mom is my most important job and I now know that everything I do, everything I say and everything I offer [my children] is really important. I say lots of things, but I think what’s more important is that my children watch what I do. I’m more mindful of how I live my life and what they see me do.” n

‘MIRACLE’ RECOVERY

After her accident, Jamie Lynn Spears’s daughter is on the mend LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER BEING INVOLVED in a horrific quad-bike accident in which she was reportedly trapped underwater for about two minutes, Jamie Lynn Spears’s daughter, Maddie Aldridge, 8, was discharged from the New Orleans Children’s Hospital on Feb. 10. “Doctors say she is on the way to a full recovery,” said a Spears family rep. While Maddie was unconscious for two days, Jamie Lynn, 25, her husband Jamie Watson and Maddie’s father Casey Aldridge, 27, “sat around her bed, talked to her, held hands and prayed,” a family friend tells WHO. Because of the amount of time she spent underwater, “Everyone was really worried because they didn’t know how bad the brain injury was. They didn’t know if she’d ever be the same. They cried a lot.” Yet Maddie woke up with no signs of neurological damage. “They have their Maddie back and that’s all that matters,” says the friend. Aunt Britney Spears took to social media to express her gratitude: “It’s truly a miracle,” she tweeted. The entire clan has found solace in their faith. “We are truly blessed,” Jamie Lynn wrote on Instagram. The next day, she tweeted a Bible verse: “Give thanks in all circumstances.” n

CLOSE CALL

According to a police report, Maddie was driving a quad bike within view of Spears and her husband when she turned sharply to avoid running over a drainage ditch, causing the vehicle to flip into a pond, where she was trapped underwater.

At a screening of The White Helmets in London, Amal’s roomy frock ignited baby buzz.

n the set of his movie Suburbicon late last year, George and Amal Clooney couldn’t seem to contain their happiness. “George and Amal were both glowing,” says a set source. “There were hints and rumours about her being pregnant. She seemed careful with food and didn’t have any caffeine.” During Amal’s several visits to the set, “She greeted everyone with a friendly handshake and a huge smile. She acted very down-to-earth. She didn’t ask for anything and just wanted to hang out in the background. George wouldn’t really let her, though. He would bring her around the set, beam and introduce her as ‘my wife, Amal.’ It was very cute to see how excited he was.” Several weeks later, the world found out why, with multiple sources confirming to WHO that the international human-rights lawyer is expecting twins—a boy and a girl—in the northern spring. The couple “let everyone in both families know quietly,” says a source close to them. “They’re all very happy.” So ended weeks of pregnancy buzz surrounding Amal, 39, whose relaxed

fashion choices of late ignited rumours that she and Clooney, 55, were expecting. While the speculation began at least as early as Jan. 4, when Lebanon’s Daily Star newspaper claimed twins were on the way, it appears the couple were only waiting for the perfect moment—perhaps once the pregnancy had passed the critical 12-week stage—before going public. When the time was right, they entrusted close friend Julie Chen, whose husband, CBS network CEO Leslie Moonves, launched Clooney’s career on E.R., to share their joy—and June due date. “Here’s the truth of the matter,” Chen, 47, who broke the news on her show, The Talk, on Feb. 9, told Entertainment Tonight. “My husband and I saw George and Amal almost three weeks ago and they casually mentioned they were expecting twins. We were all like, ‘Is it a secret?’ and George kind of went, ‘No.’ But we didn’t feel right telling anybody.” However, as more ‘Is she or isn’t she?’ stories began to circulate, Chen wanted to claim the scoop. “I’m like, ‘No, it’s true! ... He said it wasn’t a secret. Let’s break the news!’ I’ve been dying to tell.” Matt Damon is another Clooney bestie who was in on the news, since at least November. “We were working together last fall and he came up to me on-set and took me aside and told me,” the 46-year-old told the US Today show in an interview that aired on Feb. 10. “I said, ‘How far along are you?’ And he said, ‘Eight weeks,’ and I said, ‘Don’t say anything!’ He didn’t know the 12-week rule. You’re supposed to wait.” With their secret finally out, insiders are revealing how the power couple are coming

Before the challenge, I was really worried about dull and fatigued skin because I have such sensitive skin. My goal was to achieve increased skin clarity and even skin tone within a pretty short timeframe.

I am at the end of week 4 and have noticed my pores have shrunk and my skin tone has softened. My skin is brighter and clearer. Even the scarring on my chin has improved.

DEADLY UNION THE CRIME

In August 1985, Russell Causley, an electronics engineer in the aviation industry, reported that his wife, Carole, an aeronautical draughtswoman, had been missing from their home in Bournemouth, England, for a month, having left behind her wedding ring and a goodbye note. Her disappearance came days after meeting a lawyer to discuss divorcing her husband, who was having an affair. Six months later, a woman claiming to be Carole walked into the Bournemouth police station and said she was “fine.” Police dropped the case.

THE MISTRESS Russell started up an insurance business in Bournemouth in 1983, and hired Patricia Causley. They began an affair. In 1984, she moved into the home Russell shared with Carole and daughter Samantha. “It was the most bizarre thing,” says Williams-Thomas. “Carole becomes quite disillusioned by the whole thing.” After Carole’s disappearance, Patricia allegedly began using Carole’s identity for her own gain, including to obtain a permit to work in Canada with Russell. “Who is it, then, who takes on Carole’s identity and walks into the police station in 1986?” asks Williams-Thomas. “You draw your own conclusion from there.”

me and said, ‘You know what, Mark? This is my last shot,’ ” recalls Williams-Thomas of Samantha’s hopes for answers about her mother’s vanishing. “She had approached just about everyone and got nowhere. And I thought, ‘I’ve got to do something to help this woman.’ ” He did, but regrets being unable to determine Carole’s final resting place. “I wish I could have given her that answer,” he says. “One day, those who know, and that could be one or two people, will give it up.” n By Emma Martin The Investigator: A British Crime Story begins Thursday, Feb. 16, at 9.30 PM on Seven.

THE KILLER In 1993 Causley, having never been investigated over his wife’s disappearance, was convicted of faking his own drowning with the help of his mistress, Patricia Causley, who claimed Russell had fallen from a boat and not resurfaced. For attempting to claim £800,000 in insurance he was sentenced to two years’ prison, while Patricia received a suspended sentence. In light of his conviction, police took a second look at Carole’s disappearance and found enough evidence—including the fact they could find no trace of Carole—to charge Russell with murder. In 1996, Russell was found guilty of murder and handed a life sentence.

THE MOTIVE According to Williams-Thomas, Carole’s murder was all about greed. After Patricia moved into the family home, Carole made inquires about getting a divorce. “I believe what happened is she told [Russell], ‘I’m leaving you,’ and in his mind he said, ‘You’re not,’ ” says Williams-Thomas. “It was about money. She would have taken the house and he was never going to let that happen.” It is alleged Russell confessed to the crime to a fellow inmate while in jail for insurance fraud. Russell, who changed his surname to that of his mistress after his wife disappeared, is serving a life sentence (with a minimum of 16 years) and has been denied parole twice. In Russell’s murder trial, the judge called Russell and Patricia a “wicked pair,” even though Patricia had not been charged in relation to the murder. Patricia has since changed her name and lives in England. Says Williams-Thomas: “Patricia has some serious questions to answer in respect to her knowledge of Carole’s murder.” Patricia Causley has never been named as a suspect or been charged in Carole Packman’s suspected murder. She has denied any involvement in or knowledge of Carole’s murder.

o, your eyes are not deceiving you. And no, Reese Witherspoon, 40, has not had herself cloned. But it’s a fair assumption given the eye-popping physical similarity that Ava Phillippe, her 17-yearold daughter with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, bears to her famous mother. At the Los Angeles premiere of Witherspoon’s TV series Big Little Lies on Feb. 7, the pair turned heads when they hit the carpet looking more like twins than a mother-daughter duo. The two often wear complementary clothing that emphasises their striking resemblance to one another, and this event was no different—each wore a cocktail dress that was belted at the waist, Ava in a patterned gold Haney and her mum in an appliqué-covered Elie Saab. “People come up to her [all the time],”

Then Morgan and her friends Anissa Weier, 12, and Payton Leutner, 12, spent the morning of May 31, 2014, eating strawberries and doughnuts before heading out to a park near Morgan’s home in Waukesha, Wisconsin. But the hours that followed played out like a terrifying horror film. By that afternoon Anissa and Morgan were sitting in separate police

interrogation rooms, explaining how they had stabbed Payton 19 times and left her for dead in the woods. “Morgan handed me the knife,” Anissa told Waukesha police. “I give it back to her and say, ‘You do it. Go ballistic. Go crazy.’ ” In another room, Morgan told detectives how it felt to stab Payton, a friend she had known since Year 4. “I didn’t know what I did. It just sort of happened,” she said. “It didn’t feel like anything. It was like air.”

Delivering as many cheers as tears, time-travelling TV series ‘This Is Us’ is the new surprise hit

T

This is … well, it appears to be 1993. Here in a high-school car park, a goateed Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) is standing by a woodpanelled Jeep and ripping into his sons—clad in opposing-team football uniforms—for brawling during the game. “What the hell were you thinking out there?” he shouts, as his wife, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), tries to calm him. “Your mother and I didn’t raise you like that! Both of you! Now, do your handshake and make up!” The teens look towards Mum, but find no mercy. “Do it now,” she seconds. They perfunctorily execute a series of hand slaps before the family silently piles into the car and Rebecca stares vacantly out the window as a world-weary Jack drives off.

While filming this scene for then new timetripping, emotion-dripping family dramedy This Is Us (airing on Wednesdays at 8.30 PM Ten), Ventimiglia never wavers in intensity (in one take, an F-bomb slips out), but the mood remains light: “You kiss Mandy Moore with that mouth?” the boys rib him between takes. This episode, which unspools the fraught saga of Kevin and Randall’s rocky relationship as brothers over several decades, marks the first time that viewers will see the family in the early 1990s—so far they have visited 1979, 1988 and present day. Which means yet another set of young actors has been hired to play Jack and Rebecca’s kids, this time as teens. “Each age range is different,” observes Moore. “Eight-year-olds are going to be eight-year-olds. Thirteen-year-olds are going to start puberty

Created “Babies are going to crap themselves, they’re not going to sleep when you tell them to by Crazy, Stupid, Love screenwriter Dan and they’re not going to cry on cue.” Fogelman, the series presented itself as a tale Speaking of weeping, perhaps these about thirtysomethings who share the same two can tell us how many tissue birthday—Jack, whose sexy boxes they would rate this celebration with pregnantepisode? “Oh, dude, this is a with-triplets wife Rebecca is heartbreaker,” Ventimiglia interrupted when she goes enthuses. “The episode begins into labour and loses one baby and ends the same way, but in during childbirth; Kevin (Justin reverse order,” Moore hints. “It’s Hartley), whose desire to be an echo of their relationship ... taken seriously results in a viral —Mandy Moore meltdown and a career shake-up; and we highlight the journey that this relationship has taken and where they Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin’s plus-size twin find themselves now, which is—it’s not a and personal assistant who seeks to change her good spot. And one of those little handy packs But near the end of the pilot, a heartyou put in your pocket.” warming head rush of a twist suddenly changed the game—thanks to a firefighter lighting a cigarette in a hospital—and we realised we were actually watching Jack and Rebecca 36 years ago as the new parents of Kate, Kevin and Randall (dubbed the Big Three), while their grown-up stories were unspooling in present day. Episode 2 of This Is Us then followed that wow! with an ow! (and a how?) in the final scene when present-day Rebecca, aka Grandma, dropped by Randall’s house with Grandpa, but Grandpa turned out to be ... Jack’s best friend, Miguel (Jon Huertas). Where is Jack? Bitterly divorced? Dead? At a Steelers game? All theories welcome. The amiable puppeteer behind the feel-good hit underestimated how many heartstrings the show would pull. “I always knew what the series was going to be, I knew what the second episode was going to be, I knew how it was going to end,”

As for the patriarch, Fogelman rethought the character after meeting with Heroes star Ventimiglia. “I was picturing a much more normal guy, like me,” recalls Fogelman. “Milo came in with long hair, beard, a motorcycle and a leather jacket. There was blue-collar alpha-ness, a kind of optimism to him, like ‘I’m going to will this family forward,’ that I hadn’t intended. But it was clear that that’s the guy.” The US also seemed to put family first—when the show made its debut there last September, it drew 14.6 million viewers, with social media aflutter over the twist. “One of the things I love about sports is when you see something amazing happen and everyone in the room goes, ‘What?’ ” says Hartley. “That’s what people were doing, just admitting that mind-blow: ‘You got me.’ But it wasn’t a gimmick.” Gimmick or not, introducing various incarnations of the Big Three does come with its challenges. “Not only do you have to find kids who can closely approximate and feel like our three adult actors, they also need to carry a lot of material,” says Fogelman. “And then you need to put them together to make sure one kid doesn’t feel older than the other kids, and that they feel all right together.” Meanwhile, Ventimiglia and Moore have to jockey between playing wide-eyed and well-worn parents and everything in between. “When I sat down for that initial meeting with Dan and we went in the writers’ room and saw the timeline written out around the [wall], I was like, ‘Holy shit! I’m going to have a panic attack,’ because I have to have so much information and backstory in my brain at all times,” says Moore. “I’ve decided that I’m just going to take it on a need-to-know basis because otherwise I would be drowning trying to figure everything out.” (Perhaps now

inging in 2017, Britney Spears dined on surf-and-turf skewers and baked fish at Los Angeles hot spot Catch LA as she cosied up with her new beau, model Sam Asghari. “They did not wait till midnight for a kiss,” said a source. “He gave her his jacket to keep her warm and had his arm around her all evening.” Healthy, happy and being looked after—Spears, 35, is living a life that seems worlds away from where she was a decade earlier. In 2007 the pop star’s downward spiral reached a spectacular low—her infamous headshaving on Feb. 16—that preceded her losing custody of her sons and being placed on a psychiatric hold, followed by stints in rehab. From there, under the

conservatorship of her father, Jamie Spears, she has spent a decade rebuilding her life and career. “I’m loving myself and learning about myself every day,” the star said in September. “Being a mother and being with my boys [Jayden, 10, and Sean Preston, 11] has made me so much more accepting of myself. I’m their mom, whatever. That has been a really big thing for me over these last few years.” Performing her Piece of Me Las Vegas residency has also provided stability, careerwise. Of releasing her latest album, Glory, in August, “I don’t really see it as a comeback,” she has said. “I think I’ve never really left. It’s a reinvention of myself and just a different time in my life—a really good, glorious time.” n

ur 20-year JOURNEY D VIOLA DAVIS & DENZEL WASHINGTON

The ‘Fences’ stars talk about their friendship, their reunion and the perils of their intense roles

enzel Washington doesn’t remember the first time he met Viola Davis—but she does. In 1996, Davis was starring in a Broadway production of August Wilson’s play Seven Guitars. “He came [backstage] and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I met Denzel Washington!’ ” recalls Davis. In 2002, Washington, now 62, directed Davis, 51, in the movie Antwone Fisher, and in 2010 they both won Tony awards for their turns in Wilson’s play Fences, about a troubled 1950s family. Now they’re getting major Oscar buzz for the movie version, which Washington also directed (in cinemas now). The pair spoke to WHO’s Kara Warner about their strong bond.

Why do you love working together? Davis To me, Denzel is familiar, he’s easy. It’s like I know him. It’s like, “That’s Denzel.” Washington [Laughs] Davis And at the same time, I’m a fan. I don’t like telling him that, but I think he always makes interesting choices, I think it’s always rooted in truth and humanity and I think he has a lot of courage, he’s not a wimp and I like that. I think it takes a lot of courage to be an artist and to really go for it with your ideas. Washington And thank you, goodnight. And scene. [Laughs] Davis He won’t say anything about me. What do you like most about Viola? Washington I just like Viola. Viola is a great actor, I love working with her and I love watching her. When we did Antwone Fisher, because we’re actors—I recognise one when I see one, I know how I am—I could see she wanted to be left alone, she was in the zone, so I knew what to do [as a director]. Just leave her alone and just watch. What did you enjoy about returning to these characters? Davis You can never be tired of that [August Wilson] dialogue. I did Seven Guitars for over a year and even after I left it, I missed it.

I missed those words and the challenge of them. The depth to which it takes you, he could’ve easily said, “I’ll take the baby but you can leave.” August could have written that, but from now on, this child’s got a mother. “You a woman-less man,” the power of those words, that’s what you miss. But you also miss these actors. I love, and usually I hate, being the only girl because I feel like I’m so shy and awkward. I don’t like being around a lot of male energy. Washington says he and Davis set out to “refresh Washington Look at her, as and rediscover” their Fences she pulls her coat closed. characters for the film. [Laughs] That’s interesting. Davis I know, but I just loved Washington You’ve got to ask her husband being around all these, they’re just great, that. great men. Davis Yeah, I don’t notice it. The play and the film are emotional and Washington My wife says that, I don’t think intense. Do you take any of that home that. With a play, it’s 114 times in a row, so with you? you don’t have a chance to get away from it. Washington My wife talks about, “Who’s Davis I don’t notice it. When I’m done on-set, coming home today?” We went on vacation I take my wardrobe off like it’s on fire, I really right after we closed the play that afternoon, do. A friend was with me one time and it we were in Italy 12 hours later, but [my was the end of the day and she was like, character] Troy was still ... Troy went to Italy. “Viola, wait a minute! You’re tripping over Davis [Laughs] Oh no, that’s not good. things,” and I was like, “I gotta get out of Washington Troy went to Italy. And again, here,” but, yeah, maybe it’s a better question here’s the beauty and the brilliance of August, for my husband. I did King Lear and played you start saying those lines. Kent as a lesbian who was pretending to Davis Oh yeah, I’m always quoting, especially be a man. I really took that character home with my husband. If I feel like he’s starting to because I had to be so immersed in it. After it plan. My husband is a planner, I’ll say, “You was over, I got my hair braided and my nails know, ‘Man got plan but God, he got plan, done. I had to be a girl again. too. You remember that, Julius?’” That’s the Washington I just found my next directing line I always go back to. It’s from Seven Guitars. job! n Have characters ever come home with you?

THE MENENDEZ BROTHERS

ERIK MENENDEZ NOW

More than two decades after being convicted for murdering their wealthy parents, Lyle and Erik Menéndez search for ‘meaning beyond the tragedy’

LIFE BEHIN I

n the days leading up to the grisly 1989 shotgun slaying of his wealthy parents in the family’s sprawling Beverly Hills mansion, 21-year-old student Lyle Menéndez enjoyed a life of privilege that included a wallet full of credit cards and a new offcampus townhouse at New Jersey’s Princeton University. But these days, the 49-year-old convicted murderer can’t even finish a phone conversation without being told to get back to his prison cell. “I gotta go,” Menéndez says during a phone call as a rainstorm raged outside of Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California. “We lost power, and I have to get

back to my cell. I’m not sure the generator will come back on in the storm.” Lyle Menéndez is used to being in the centre of storms. He and his younger brother, Erik, became infamous as the main characters in one of America’s most shocking double murders. On the evening of Aug. 20, 1989, the two burst into the den of their Beverly Hills home with 12-gauge shotguns and fatally shot their parents, Jose Menéndez, 45, an entertainment executive, and Kitty, 47, a stay-at-home mother, as they watched TV. In two high-profile trials, the first of which was broadcast live on Court TV in 1993, the

brothers’ defence team claimed that Lyle and Erik, 18, killed their parents in self-defence after years of sexual abuse by their father that was ignored by their mother. The prosecution, meanwhile, pointed to a money motive and the lavish spending spree the brothers went on after the murders, buying expensive watches, cars and tennis lessons. “This was all about money,” insists former Los Angeles assistant district attorney Pamela Bozanich. “The only way they could go to trial and have any hope of not getting the death penalty was to make up an abuse excuse.” In 1996, the brothers were convicted of first-degree murder and

sentenced to life without parole. Now after nearly 27 years behind bars, Lyle contends that he still “has sleepless nights” over the murders. “This tragedy will always be the most astounding and regrettable thing that has ever happened in my life,” he says. “You can’t escape the memories, and I long ago stopped trying.” As for those who don’t buy the brothers’ abuse claims, he says, “There’s always going to be scepticism. But I think if someone isn’t believing it, it’s because they didn’t get to see the evidence.” Despite not being allowed to see or speak to his brother since 1996, Lyle’s connection to Erik, now

46 and in another California prison nearly 800km away, is as strong as ever. “I miss my brother every day,” he says. “We even play chess through the mail, but it’s a little slow.” Lyle, who like his brother is married, credits his wife of 13 years, a lawyer named Rebecca, with helping him survive “the unpredictable, very stressful environment” of prison. “People are judgmental, and she has to put up with a lot,” he says of Rebecca, who visits him for six hours every Saturday and Sunday. “It would be easier to leave, but I’m profoundly grateful that she doesn’t.” For the past 15 years, Lyle, who shares a 1.8x3m cell with another prisoner, has served as president of the inmate government while also running a support group for inmates who have endured sexual abuse. “It gives me a chance to feel like I’m doing something meaningful,” he says. Erik, he notes, devotes his time to working with terminally ill inmates. “You can still lead a purposeful life beyond the tragedy,” says Lyle. “And that’s what my brother and I are doing.” n By Johnny Dodd Who l 57

ongratulations on your ambassador role with Pantene. Can you tell us about it? Thank you! I love the #StrongFromTheCore concept as it’s all about the transformative power of a hair makeover. And it’s so true— simple hair changes can make women feel stronger and more confident. Motherhood, in particular, can really change the way you feel about yourself and when you have good hair, it gives you that extra boost. Did you see a change to your hair and skin during your pregnancies? Yes, I was surprised at how my skin and hair loved pregnancy. I really felt I glowed ... except for the last month! How did your beauty routine change while you were pregnant? With my first baby, Harper, I was very strict, no toxic anything. With my second, Hendrix, I was a little more relaxed. Now, after children, are you quite low-maintenance? I don’t have as much time as I used to, so my routine is not too time-consuming, but I still focus on great products that work. When you get a moment to yourself, how do you treat yourself? I love a good massage, facial, you name it—anything that involves lying down! Any beauty secrets you care to share? I hate to say it, but you can’t go past rest and lots of water. I also love contouring and shading: there’s nothing better to shape your face. How do you find balance with work, family and yourself? It’s never easy, I won’t lie. I do have an amazing husband and brilliant family and friends, and I also love what I do, so that helps.

● “Skin tone and eye colour are the key pointers to deciding what shade of blonde will best suit you. To determine your skin tone, look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural daylight—a blue hue means you’re in the cool category, and a green tint means you’ve got a warm skin tone,” says Richards. ● For warm skin tones, stick to highlights in warm blonde shades. “If you have cooler skin and particularly blue eyes, you will probably

suit lighter blonde and perhaps an all over bleach blonde, although it’s not for everyone.” ● Richards adored Ruby Rose as a blonde and, love it or hate it, Kim Kardashian West’s transformation made a huge statement. Michelle Williams, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lawrence all know how to parade platinum like pros, according to Richards. ● Before you take the plunge, be aware that blonde is much higher maintenance—visits to the salon will be more frequent and particular attention to products is advised. “The best products for blonde maintenance will illuminate, hydrate and detox your locks,” says Richards. “I recommend the new Joico Blonde $33.95 Joico Brightening Life Brightening shampoo and conditioner, Treatment Masque and a brightening masque once a week.” Available from Joico salons

How would a runner benefit from this style of class?

Running can cause significant strain on joints. This class is low-impact and a perfect cross-training option. During a class, the single-leg standing stability moves, core strengthening, ankle stability and alignment correction will all help to educate the body and mind to achieve optimal body positioning. This can help reduce the risk of injury and boost your running performance.

What’s an example of a class exercise?

Core Climbers: Builds core stamina, balance and endurance. Get Ready: Plank position on the hands and toes. Do It: Keeping a steady plank and a lengthened torso, bring one knee to the chest without rounding the lower back or lifting the bottom up. Hold for one breath and return to plank. Repeat, alternating legs, for 20 reps.

BIG LITTLE LIES

STARRING: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley Liane Moriarty’s delicious 2014 page-turner took aim at Sydney’s yummy-mummy set; in this star-studded adaptation, the action has moved to Northern California. But the guts of the story remain—in fact, they only seem to have grown more sinister under Jean-Marc Vallée’s direction. Witherspoon is at her acidic best, but it is Kidman who stands out as a moneyed housewife hiding a dark marital secret. (Starts Mon., Feb. 20, 1 PM & 8.30 PM; Showcase)

ANDREW GARFIELD

Garfield, 33, stars in Martin Scorsese’s new film ‘Silence,’ based on Shusaku Endo’s award-winning 1966 novel. (Out now)

In your new movie you play a 17thcentury Portuguese missionary. How did you wrap your mind around the film’s themes of faith and religion? The movie explores the very profound questions of “What are we doing here? How do we live? What is actually wanted of us here?” I think if we ask that in a sincere way, we’ll get some guidance and answers. I was also working with a Jesuit priest all the way through shooting and even afterwards. We still talk a lot. You also lost 18kg for the role. What was that like? It was really great to know that experience of fasting and starvation, because it was a reality for our characters. We filmed in Taiwan, so I was away from all the people I love, all the things that I love. Not being able to eat much and not being able to go out gave me so much clarity about what and who is important to me in my life ... and also about what kind of restaurants I was excited to visit after! It sounds extremely intense. How did you adapt back to the real world? I gave myself a lot of rewards. I stopped in San Francisco before going back to LA because I needed to drive. I went down the California coast and stopped in Big Sur, which is my favourite place in the world. I wrote and hiked, kind of stared out the window and let everything that had just happened all sink in. There was a lot to unpack but a lot to be thankful for, really. —Kara Warner

Garfield’s fellow priests in the movie are Liam Neeson and Adam Driver.

STARRING: Octavia Spencer During the 1960s scramble to put an astronaut in orbit, a group of African-American female mathematicians worked behind the scenes at NASA, doing the complex calculations that sent Alan Shepard and John Glenn to space. Sounds like a dull, dutiful history lesson? Think again. Spencer, Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monáe bring every ounce of their considerable charm to a script filled with From left: Monaé, Henson and Spencer excel in humour and heart. The movie moments light and serious. conveys the injustice of discrimination—the women OTHER MATHS-TERPIECES couldn’t even go to the bathroom in the same building as white scientists—and the thrill of victory on a visceral, personal level. STARRING: Justin Kirk, Caitlin Stasey

A billionaire has a bold strategy for fixing America’s broken infrastructure: after his friend is gunned down in an armed robbery, entrepreneur Gideon Reeves (Kirk) takes over his Chicago police district, because Reeves has money and Chicago (apparently) has no police unions. His plan: futuristic uniforms! Tasers that look like guns! Apps! Drones! It’s not the most believable drama on TV but it features not one, but two former Neighbours (Stasey and Daniel MacPherson). And it’s fun. (Starts Thurs., Feb. 16, 7.30 PM; Fox8)

The prolific singer– songwriter wrote his sixteenth album over the course of a nonstop two years of touring, recording (both a live album and that notorious cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989) and watching his marriage to Mandy Moore crumble. “I felt like I had been robbed of the most valuable thing in a person’s life: time,” he says of its title. Still, he adds, “Whatever was going in me was strong enough that I only had to sit down and this stuff just made itself known.” (Out Feb. 17)

WHAT YOUR STARS SAY THIS WEEK, FEB. 20–26

ARIES

MARCH 20–APRIL 18

Until the sun comes into your sign, you may not be your usual robust and savvy self, so whatever emerges out of the woodwork it will be worth biding your time before you take action. This does not mean you can turn a blind eye to an emergency, but it does suggest you should not act without due thought and enquiry. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

CANCER

JUNE 21–JULY 21

TAURUS

APRIL 19–MAY 20

This is a fairly contentious climate so you’re going to have to work even harder to keep the peace and prevent a situation from going needlessly into freefall. Yet this is also a week when projects stuck in the sidings can start to move. Sunday’s solar eclipse signals a new start in general and a fresh creative endeavour in particular. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

LEO

JULY 22–AUG. 22

GEMINI

MAY 21–JUNE 20

A solar eclipse on your mid-heaven hints at an offer or opportunity now or in the near future that will take you in a new direction. This eclipse will also inspire you to promote your own ambitions and take a chance with a new company or new vehicle for your talents. Be single-minded, not dual-purposed. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

VIRGO

AUG. 23–SEPT. 22

Mars–Pluto aspects bring out the best and worst in people. One of the secrets of dealing with this planetary twosome is neither to go on the aggressive nor the defensive: remain open-minded and willing to compromise. Show fear and someone will take advantage of you; be over-assertive and the doors to negotiation will close. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

February may have come in like a lamb, but it’s going out like a lion! Mountains get moved under such stars but they can crumble, too. So go carefully and keep smiling, even when you don’t feel like it. Such influences can bring situations to crisis point, but this is often productive and leads to a new start thereafter. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

A solar eclipse begins a new cycle for relationships in general and your love-life in particular. There is always a sense of fate having taken you by the hand when eclipses occur, but trying to work out how and why certain events have happened is a pointless exercise. Only in the fullness of time will you be able to connect the dots. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

LIBRA

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

Should your efforts come to naught, assume there are factors you are unaware of and in time you will realise how much better off you are because of the events that took place now. Not that this gives you an excuse to be half-hearted in your efforts—if something or someone is worth fighting for, give it your all. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

There is no point using a sledgehammer to smash a nut. And there’s no point bringing out all your guns just because someone has failed to please you or a situation has not turned out quite as you hoped. Go back to base, nurse your wounds and when you’ve got your mojo back, re-strategise. Let the universe to do its work for now. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Sunday’s solar eclipse brings new information to light and signals an important development, linked first and foremost to home and family. Maybe you have plans to move home or perhaps you are already expecting an addition to the family, but one way or another over the next few weeks a fresh chapter will open. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

CAPRICORN

AQUARIUS

As always under Pluto you get the best of times and the worst. If you are already concerned about a situation, first thing Monday start making gentle inquiries and should you not receive the answers you want, put a plan B in place. By contrast, should a breakthrough occur recognise it comes through your efforts and faith. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

People will not be in the mood to compromise and unless you are prepared to shift your position—albeit even by an inch!—things could get very difficult. Money is probably going to be the focus for any ups and downs, and for some Aquarians the solar eclipse brings an unexpected financial bonus. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

PISCES

FEB. 19–MARCH 19

Sunday’s solar eclipse is in your sign and the portent of the new and the different. As always with new beginnings a chapter has to close, so be philosophical about those things that fade away at this time. Many a great opportunity is lost because people are afraid to let go of the past and lack the confidence to back their beliefs and talents. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

SARAH RAFFERTY

During a promotional visit to Sydney, the Suits actress spent a “brutal day at the office” with co-star Rick Hoffman on Feb 9.

I was meeting a friend for lunch and they just played nonstop 1990s R&B. Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” came on and I was like, “Oh my God, this is my high school!” I couldn’t just bust a move, but I was a hairsplit away from doing so.

What a rebel! The Logan star asserted himself with a Feb. 7 selfie hashtagged “#donottellmewhattodo.”

Moana. I took my niece and my cousin, but they were a secret cover for me actually wanting to see it! It made me so happy, but I also may have shed a tear at one point.

LAST TV BINGE

I’m catching up with Scandal because my girlfriends are like, “Girl, Olivia Pope is queen!” and I’m like, “I know! I’ve let her down.” I’m going to binge on Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder. I’m Shonda Rhimes–ing it! Miranda Tapsell stars on Newton’s Law, which airs Thursdays at 8.30 PM on ABC and ABC iview. Tapsell (right) plays insurance investigator Skye Stewart opposite Claudia Karvan’s barrister Josephine Newton.

“I’ve played a lot of sassy characters,” says two-time Logie winner Tapsell, 28. “But I’d like to think that Skye is a bit of a Hermione Granger.”

A quick chat with

Hugh Sheridan The actor and musician, 31, has brought the drama to Nine’s House Husbands, being involved in “a massive chainsaw fight” in his first scene as music teacher Nick and sharing “a cheeky pash” with co-star Delta Goodrem. He has also brought irony: “At school, I couldn’t stand my music teacher,” he tells WHO’s Kate Halfpenny. “He hated me, I hated him.” There’s lots of blokes on-set. Do you do boy things between takes? There’s lots of laughing. We play Hacky Sack and stuff.

SHE WEARS THE PANTS Remember when Victoria Beckham’s wardrobe was all tight black dresses and superhigh heels? Now for the mum of four and fashion designer, it’s all about dressing down.

There were no couture gowns for Beckham at Paris Fashion Week in January.

Posh (on Feb. 8) once said, “I just can’t concentrate in flats.” Looks like she’s learnt how to.

The designer modelled clothes from her own collection in New York on Feb. 7. (See p. 44.)

Who’s your cast bestie? Gary Sweet is easily the most fun person I’ve ever worked with. He’s hilarious. We’ve got a real brotherly kind of thing. Our characters are supposed to hate each other and it’s become difficult because he just cracks me up. My agent said, “How’s it all going on House Husbands?” and I said, “Great, but I can’t work with Gary Sweet.” It would be a good blooper reel. Would you be a good house husband? I am reasonably domestic. I have, like most guys, four or five dishes I can cook, but I tend to wait until all my washing needs doing, there’s nothing left to wear, then I do it. One day I’m sure I’ll settle down and have kids and work it out. You can sing, dance, act. Which Hugh is our biggest triple threat—you or Jackman? If I can be put in the same category as him, I’d be very happy. He’s extraordinarily talented. A dance and sing-off with Hugh? I’d be 100 per cent up for it. Is it true you’d like to star in a Bee Gees TV miniseries? Oh my God, how do you know that? I don’t want you to tell everyone because they’ll steal the idea. We did the INXS thing, which was so much fun and it’s like the hot thing to do, but nobody’s done a Bee Gees one. I’m such a huge fan. I’d love to play Barry.

“The truth is, it was the Fourth of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back. And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, ‘Does anyone have a T-shirt?’ And one of her friends said, ‘I’ve got this.’ And we all laughed about it. It was a joke.” —Taylor Swift’s ex Tom Hiddleston on that ridiculous Tay Tay singlet.

Determined to discover if blondes really do have more fun, actors Allison Williams and Olivia Wilde have debuted new yellow ’dos. After finishing Girls, Williams said the change was to help her get rid of Marnie. Wilde went blonde ... well, why not?

A day in my life In Miami for an advertising shoot, the model and new mum shares details with WHO about her ‘crazy, hectic’ day

8 AM: GOING TO WORK

Though late-night infomercials kept her up the night before, Teigen woke at 7 AM to head to set. “I immediately had a breakfast burrito with some of the hottest hot sauce I’ve ever had,” she says.

Minogue and Sasse

DUMPED!

It hasn’t been a good few weeks for Josh Sasse. Not only has he split from fiancée Kylie Minogue, but his association with the “Say ‘I Do,’ Down Under” campaign is at an end. The project’s co-founders, advocacy group Australian Marriage Equality (AME), confirmed their partnership with the 29-year-old was no more, saying, “The campaign has run its course. It is now over.” On top of this, the US television show he stars in, No Tomorrow, has been cancelled due to poor ratings. “It’s just more bad news after another at the moment,” a source close to Sasse said.

HIRING HELP Looking for work? According to a leaked job ad, actor Rob Lowe is seeking an assistant. For a remuneration of US$70,000, duties include booking massages, scheduling a haircut before every single taping of his 7Flix drama Code Black and to “assume nothing.” However when asked about the ad on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Lowe joked he’d never seen it. Although he did confess he is hiring.

FIX IT

Husband John Legend was on-set all day, sneaking in an occasional squeeze. “John understands me,” she says. “He gets me.”

3.30 PM: IN COSTUME

“I love this outfit,” Teigen says. “The first thing I said was that it’s too comfortable!”

Debra Messing has revealed that on her debut film, 1995’s A Walk in the Clouds, she was advised to get a nose job by director Alfonso Arau because it was “ruining” the movie. Messing says she was doing a love scene with Keanu Reeves when Arau yelled, “Cut!” before asking, “How quickly can we get a plastic surgeon in here?”

5 PM: IT’S A WRAP

During breaks, Teigen facetimed 10-month-old daughter Luna, who was in Los Angles with Grandma. After wrapping, the couple prepped to fly home. “Luna will be asleep,” she says. “It’s so selfish of me to wake her up, but I have to see her!”

English socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, god-daughter of Prince Charles, died in London on Feb. 8 at age 45. She had been battling a brain tumour. In a statement, the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, said they were “deeply saddened” by her death. Palmer-Tomkinson, whose father, Charles, was a landowner and British Olympic skier, became notorious for her partying in the 1990s, which was detailed in a weekly column ghostwritten for the Sunday Times. She underwent rehabilitation for cocaine addiction. The sister of author Santa Montefiore, she co-wrote The Naughty Girl’s Guide to Life (2007) and novels Inheritance (2010) and Infidelity (2012).

SPLIT

Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, 30, and wife Erin Hurley, 29, whose relationship is featured in the upcoming Jake Gyllenhaal movie Stronger, announced on Feb. 8 they are divorcing. Bauman lost both legs in the 2013 attack, which came as he waited for then-girlfriend Hurley to finish the race.
