Office Gossip is more than an educational distraction and time waster. It can cause expensive turnover among employees and clients. Come On Managers, let’s face office gossip head-on How big a problem is office gossip? A recent study of 200 employees found that on average, people are spending an hour each day… Gossiping!!Since gossip is a natural part of human behavior but in work places if unchecked, it can cross the line in harassment and open employees to liability. No more idle talk from Me. Here is what to do!
• Managers don’t ignore it Many of us first experience unpleasant gossip when we were school children. Our parent and teachers counseled us to ignore it. To walk away! Well that technique might work in the school yard; it can have disastrous effects in the work place. As a manager, you simply cannot ignore continuous carry surcharge. It can send the wrong message that the behavior is acceptable. •
Speak to its negative effects appealing to the person’s sensible motion isn’t effective when you are dealing with office gossip. It is not about being nice to people, it is about getting the job done. So rather than emphasizing on how gossip is polite, highlight that it distracts people from their duties. It prevents customer calls from being properly returned. It pushes back deadlines. • Bring in HR If you tried all these things and an employee is still spreading rumors, Hit the HR speed dial button.HR would help that employee to see it from another perspective.HR can also re-enforce how the charter may violate the company policy and if necessary, they can guide you to the next steps for discipline. It might be easier in the short term to work overlook office gossip hoping it goes away on its own but the trouble is in the long run. Such behaviors can become setting stones with legal and ethical ramifications.
