clear-span tents. Patrons enjoy food and beverages, which for adults includes fine wines found in the welcoming Milwaukee Magazine Wine Garden, and entertainment for all tastes and ages. “In a way, the festival has come full circle because, over the past few years especially, we’ve brought back a focus on a wider variety of arts,” says Krista Renfrew, director of special events for the Milwaukee Art Museum. This year, for example, the McMenamin Irish Dance Academy will perform, Danceworks Performance Company will share an original contemporary piece, and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra will feature Calypso, the group’s Trinidadianstyle steel band. Other musical entertainment takes festival-goers right through Friday and Saturday evenings, and an enhanced Children’s Area will keep young patrons engaged. (SEE PAGE 9 FOR THE COMPLETE SCHEDULE.)

“There’s such a strong dynamic to the festival. It easily can take a whole day to absorb the full experience,” says Julia DeCicco, president of the Friends of Art volunteer group that organizes the event. In addition to enjoying art tents and entertainment, visitors can stroll along the lake, explore the sculpture garden and even tour the world-class Museum.

AND THE BEST REMAINS THE BEST A constant over the past five decades? The outstanding artwork. Only about 10 percent of all artists who apply are accepted into this juried art festival. “People who come to the festival appreciate that everything they see and buy is high-quality,” says Renfrew. Many – if not most – art festivals have struggled to make it 50 years. But LFOA organizers have deliberately, and smartly, breathed new life into the festival each year while maintaining its high standards. For 2012, Lewis will be back to celebrate the event’s golden anniversary. “It really was a fun thing to plan and [have] so well-received by everyone,” he says.
