The relay worked its way through town and was passed off to local sports personalities and citizens including our own lifetime Chamber member Donna Coulter.

It literally feels like I just was putting my pen to paper (or rather my fingers to keyboard) when I was writing my last message and mentioning the 2015 PanAm/ ParaPanAm games that would be “heading our way in a few short months”. Well, those months have now turned to days and on June 23, Milton welcomed the torch bearers for the Games at a tremendous ceremony in town featuring some amazing community members including Donna Coulter, Derek McGowan, Madelyn Dunley, Travis Gerrits and Steve Bauer (head of the Milton Cycling Academy, headquartered at the Velodrome).

Locals can participate in games related events around town. See page 19 for a map of events and locations. To the world’s elite athletes, family, friends and visitors, welcome to our Town of Milton!

I am a fan of following up on ideas and thoughts and with that in mind, how many of you took up my challenge to make this year YOUR year to do something more with those business cards then just placing them in a purse/pocket? Now is the perfect time of year to schedule something outdoors on one of the many restaurant or coffee shop patios that are dotting our sidewalks. Think about it – you can connect with a great person AND support our local businesses!

Our Farmer’s Market is off to a tremendous start, and I’d like to thank all the great people (Logan, Harrison and Andrew) who wake up at some unseemly hour on Saturday to set up our Chamber’s Scholarship Café (aka Bacon on a Bun Stand or BBS) cooking up some great treats for all our visitors. We see many of the same visitors returning year after year, a number of them already know the phrase “white or brown, would you like an extra slice or a drink?” Remember, all proceeds are directed towards the Chamber’s many scholarships which we offer each year to those students entering post-secondary education.

2015 is officially half over! It is increasingly evident that time does fly and the first half of the year is proof of that phenomenon. Traditionally July and August are slower months for the Chamber allowing us to send staff on vacation, update our files and database, prepare budgets for the new fiscal year starting October 1 and visit our Escarpment Country™ tourism partners.

There appears to be no lull this year with the Pan Am/Parapan Am games in July and August; a fall election in October; Small Business Week taking place in October plus our usual activities and events.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM will take place in Ottawa the weekend prior to the federal election and the policy framework will be voted on during that time. The resolutions passed will form the priorities of the Canadian Chamber and their work with the government. It is always an exciting experience for the delegates to see what issues are important to different provinces/territories in our country and the behind the scenes negotiations to get their resolutions passed. This year’s conference will be protracted so everyone can get back to their Chambers in time for Election Day. Make sure you exercise your right and privilege to vote.

Excitement at the Cisco Milton Pan/Parapan Am Velodrome This year we welcome the world to Milton at the Cisco Milton Pan/Parapan Am Velodrome. From July 16-19 and August 10 & 11 Milton will host the cycling athletes from 41 countries during 6 days of competition.

If you weren’t lucky enough to get tickets, you can watch the competitions at the Milton Centre for the Arts. The facility operation returns to the Town in mid-September and is open to the public.

Visit the facility and experience the excitement for yourself. You may even want to take lessons!

GENERIC DRUGS ARE THEY REALLY THE SAME?

A generic drug is a copy of a brand name product. By law, generic drugs must contain identical active ingredient as the brand name drug. Health Canada ensures the Canadian public gets medication that is therapeutically safe, effective and of high quality, and the manufacturer must prove the drug performs the same way on the body as the brand name drug.

A generic drug may look different due to non-medicinal ingredients, like fillers and ingredients that give the drug its colour, but studies must prove these ingredients have not changed the quality, safety or effectiveness of the drug. The major difference between generic and brand name drugs? The cost. When a company brings a new drug onto the market, substantial money has been spent on research,

development, marketing and promotion of the drug. A patent is granted, giving the company an exclusive right to sell the drug as long as the patent is in effect. As the patent nears expiration, manufacturers can apply to produce generic versions of the drug, and without the initial development costs, can afford to make and sell it at a lower cost. When multiple companies begin producing and selling a drug, the competition among them can drive the price down even further. In fact, generic drugs can cost up to 65% less than their brand name equivalent.

By using generic versions whenever possible, not only will you save at the pharmacy, but depending on your plan design, you could be reimbursed up to 30% more of your prescription purchase – giving you twice the savings.

Regardless of whether your prescriptions are covered through a public plan or by health premiums at work, everybody pays for high-priced drugs through taxes and/ or increased premiums. Choosing generic drugs is safe and effective, and can result in significant savings for all stakeholders.

Commodity Wildcard: What is happening in China?

When someone asks where commodity prices are headed, they’re really asking: what’s the outlook for China?

Last year, China consumed more coal than the rest of the world combined and imported 70% of the world’s seaborne iron ore. In 2012, China accounted for half of the global growth in oil demand. It’s a commodity behemoth and the recent slow-down in the Chinese economy is a big reason for weakness in prices for this sector.

Should we be worried?

China’s economic growth is definitely slowing, but the real concern is that official estimates of China’s GDP growth are overestimated. Economists are scratching their heads and coming up with widely varying estimates: China GDP Growth in Q1 2015 Source

Why all this guessing? China’s growth numbers are always suspiciously consistent and always within 0.2% of the government forecast. Moreover, skeptical analysts see hard data, such as industrial production, energy consumption and construction, which are much weaker than GDP, and are using it to create their own estimates of what is going on. But it’s not just the data that is worrying.

The big question is China’s real estate.

Property prices in 70 Chinese cities have fallen for more than a year, and 60 million empty apartments await buyers.

The Chinese government is well aware of the risk and has taken action. The Central Bank has lowered interest rates three times and it has twice reduced the amount of reserves that banks must hold, while easing mortgage rules. Still, new construction starts have fallen 16% in the first five months of 2015, a significant hit to the economy.

The challenge is that China is trying to shift the focus of its economy away from exports towards domestic growth, all while gently def lating a housing bubble.

On-Line Training: The Pros and Cons

Over the past few years; there has been a dramatic increase in the availability of online training that employers can provide for their employees, particularly in the areas of Health and Safety, Human Resources and Food Safety. While online training has many positive benefits, it also has a number of weakness that must be considered.

The Pros:

3. Documentable proof of what was presented: If course content comes under question in the future, the Provider should be able to produce a copy of the training material to present to authorities. By contrast, in Instructor led courses it is very hard to prove exactly what the Instructor said, and whether or not all of the course material was covered.

4. Accessibility: Unlike traditional training, individuals in need of specific instruction are not limited to courses that are offered in their area. Anyone may take the training in the comfort of their home or workplace.

The Cons:

1. Generic not workplace specific: Online training modules are commonly designed to address all workplaces in all industries. As a result, employees are often subjected to lessons that are irrelevant to their specific job, such as retail workers learning about chemical safety involved in an industrial setting. Online training alone does not adequately address the unique circumstances of each workplace; for example, an online Fire Safety course does not specifically identify where the fire exits are in a workplace, or what the emergency evacuation procedures are. Employers need to implement a process whereby the theory learned online is brought to light at the specific workplace. This simple teach-out can be provided by a co-worker or a Supervisor.

2. Doesn’t meet legislative requirements: There are legislative requirements wherein the Employee must be able to demonstrate their skills, capabilities

Online training alone does not adequately prepare an individual to meet many work expectations; employees need to both learn relevant rules and safe practices, and have an opportunity to apply this knowledge with appropriate supervision.

3. Is it the right Training?: Make sure before purchasing anything on-line that the courses are based on the legislative requirements for your Province and not another Province or even another Country. Contact the Service Provider to gain temporary access to the site to so that you may check the quality of the courses.

4. Credibility of Participation: Unfortunately, the computer does not have the capability of ensuring exactly who is on the other side of the keyboard, or their level of engagement in the material. There have been cases where Employees have rushed through lessons without studying the content,

or paid their children to go on-line and take the training for them.

5. Participant Interaction: Most portals don’t have a support package that allows the Employee to contact someone if they don’t understand the course material. There is no one to answer questions, so the transfer of important knowledge is impacted. When looking for training providers, look for courses that are interactive requiring the Employee to do “exercises” or “actions” within the courses instead of simply clicking thru slides.

The bottom-line is, On-Line training is not for all workplaces. Ontario Retirement Pension Plan: Chamber Network leads employer coalition to push for expanded exemptions Current ORPP parameters do not recognize employers already contributing to their employees’ retirement

The government of Ontario is currently in its final stages of designing the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.

Today, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce

released a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne urging the government to expand its definition of pension plan comparability to include capital accumulation plans, including (but not limited to) Defined Contribution plans. This move would ensure that companies in the province that have an existing pension plan for their employees would not be forced to incur this new cost of doing business.

The letter is signed by a coalition of over 150 businesses, sector associations, chambers of commerce, and boards of trade. The coalition includes employers of all sizes and from a diverse range of sectors.
