Learn About the City of Milpitas Preschool Program

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Regarding … Preschool Curriculum The City of Milpitas Preschool encourages a developmental approach to learning. Through many avenues of explorative play, children learn necessary skills with emphasis on social skills. Our program curriculum offers a wide variety of activities in order to give children the opportunity for self-discovery and the freedom to create by using their own imagination through individual choices. We view the child as a whole, which means we facilitate each child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth. We create activities that allow children to express themselves in all of these areas. Our philosophy is based on the belief that each child is unique and deserves the opportunity for full development. Registration Registration for Animal Crackers and KinderKids classes (Fall 2010-Spring 2011 school-year) begins Thursday, May 27 for Milpitas residents and Thursday, June 3 for non-residents. Waiting List If the class you register for is full, you will be notified that your child or children have been placed on a waiting list. Persons enrolled on the Waiting List will be informed of openings as soon as they occur, you will receive a notice by mail or phone. The fees will be based on the number of remaining classes. It is not necessary to call the Community Center to inquire about your child’s status. Preschool Refund Policy The $100 Registration Fee is nonrefundable. If you already received the program’s Tshirt, the $10 T-shirt fee included in the class fee, will not be refunded. Please refer to the

Refund/Cancellation Policy for more information. Potty Training Children need to be completely independent in the bathroom. No “pullups” are allowed. Parents will be called to change their clothes if their children have bathroom accidents. Children with frequent accidents may be dropped from the program. Snacks Children need to bring their own healthy snacks each day. Sweets and candy are discouraged. Separation Anxiety For many children, preschool is their first experience from being away from their family. To help the teachers build important relationships with the children, we encourage parents to show their support by waiting in the lobby during these transitional times. We also suggest a family photo be sent with their child to class each day. English as a Second Language Preparation In order to help children transition successfully into the preschool environment, parents are asked to introduce helpful English vocabulary at home, which will assist the child in communicating better with the Preschool teachers and other children in the class. Field Trips Children are required to wear their Class T-shirts, which they received on the first day of class, to all field trips. Most field trips are within walking distance. Please call the Preschool Director at (408) 586-3204 for additional questions.

Preschool

The City of Milpitas Preschool is dedicated to providing a nurturing learning environment in which young children and their families explore and grow. The preschool years are very critical in a child’s life. At an accelerated rate, they are beginning to learn who they are, about other people, and the world around them. We believe that “play” is essential for children to learn.

We will be growing an Herb Garden and begin pointing out all the wild edible and medicinal plants that grow all around us. We will make wonder remedies for bee stings, scraped knees, burns and learning how herbs heal. Children will also learn which plants not to eat or touch. All plants used are easy to care for and fun to use. When children are involved in the process of picking and preparing plants, they will discover herbs are healing for them and will often go seek them out during times of imbalance. Many children who are exposed to herbs in this way early will go to the garden and pick some chamomile when they have an upset stomach or ask for catnip tea when feverish. This helps children tune into their environment, connect with their surroundings and themselves. Ages 7-12. Introduction to Story Writing

Personal Essay Workshop

In this fun, interactive class, young writers are introduced to story writing basics - structure, point of view, story, plot, characters, voice, conflict, etc. In class exercises focus on reading, analysis of short stories, and a generation of story ideas for students to work on. This class will aim to serve the dual purposes of making participants better readers and empowering them with tools required to craft stories. Ages 12-17. Please Note: • Instructor: Radhika Sharma.

Class participants will learn how to effectively share a personal experience. They will read and analyze personal essays. Participants will work on several short personal pieces and be encouraged to respond to their own pieces critically. The class is aimed to facilitate multiple skills: the ability to coherently articulate a personal experience; working with form and detail; and writing effectively for a varied audience. Ages 12-17. Often, we are brimming with ideas and begin a writing project with enthusiasm, only to encounter frustration as we attempt to render our vision on the page. The writing might feel flat, imitative, or simply not “you.” Each one of us is gifted with a writing voice as unique as our speaking voices - if it does not make its presence felt in our work, it is simply because it might have never been given enough room and attention to blossom. In this multi-genre workshop we will read and experiment with a variety of writing forms: fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. We will critically analyze examples of fine writing to isolate elements of unique individuality and style. In the second stage of class, we will embark upon a short writing project applying our insights to render our creative expression more accurately. Ages 12-17. Writing Classes for Teens NEW! Finding Your Voice

Introduction to Story Writing

Often, we are brimming with ideas and begin a writing project with enthusiasm, only to encounter frustration as we attempt to render our vision on the page. The writing might feel flat, imitative, or simply not “you.” Each one of us is gifted with a writing voice as unique as our speaking voices - if it does not make its presence felt in our work, it is simply because it might have never been given enough room and attention to blossom. In this multi-genre workshop we will read and experiment with a variety of writing forms: fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. We will critically analyze examples of fine writing to isolate elements of unique individuality and style. In the second stage of class, we will embark upon a short writing project applying our insights to render our creative expression more accurately. Ages 12-17. Please Note: • Instructor: Radhika Sharma.

YPT - Youth Program Team

61

Developmental Assets for Youth Project Cornerstone is the Santa Clara County-wide collaborative working to mobilize our entire community to shift from simply reacting to children and youth as problems to connecting with them so they thrive. By incorporating the 41 developmental assets into the lives of youth, together we can support our children and grow a healthy society. Assets are 41 values, experiences and qualities that help kids succeed. Milpitas Parks & Recreation Services supports these assets to help our community’s kids prosper. Below is the Asset of Month calendar for this season and tips on how you can help reinforce these assets at home with your child(ren)! April Asset #9: Service to Others Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week. • Together help a neighbor. Maybe an elderly neighbor would appreciate you mowing the lawn. • Help your child put together a weekly schedule of activities that includes some kind of service to others. May Asset #18: Youth Programs Young person spends three or more hours per week in sports, clubs or organizations at school and/or in the community. • Ask your school or community center for a list of after school activities. Discuss options with your child. • Model having an “extracurricular activity” yourself. If they have time, parents should also have hobbies or activities that they do outside of a job and/or home. June Asset #10: Safety Young person feels safe at home, school and in the neighborhood. • Be an “askable” parent, so your child learns he can tell you about things that concern him, especially personal safety issues. • Give practical suggestions on how your child can be safe in specific circumstances.

July Asset #7: Community Values Youth Young person perceives that adults in the community value youth. • Attend a family community event together, such as an outdoor concert. • Take a community class on a topic such as art, exercise, or computers. August Asset #4: Caring Neighborhood Young person experiences caring neighborhoods • Be honest about your hopes and fears about your neighborhood. • Arrange a get-together so neighbors can meet and mingle. September Asset #6: Parent Involvement in Schooling Parent(s) are actively involved in helping young person succeed in school. • Make attending school events a priority. Keep track of them on a family calendar.
