women public space prague

CONTEXT Prague has more than 1.2 million inhabitants living in 57 municipal districts. In 2015 Czech Chamber of Architects officially registers 4567* (building&landscape) architects. 1033 (22.61 %) of them are women** Several hundreds of architectural graduates are leaving universities every year*** * www.cka.cz **There is a fair amount of architects who are not registered and work ‘under the registered ones’. There is no official statistics on this pool of architects, nor their gender ratio. ***There is no official number of women graduates. Currently in the research process

ASYMMETRY significant lack of visible women experts in traditionally male dominated professions - architecture, urban planning

to be invited to expert dialogue

women public space prague

OPPORTUNITY With the ‘new wave’ calling for more inclusive urban planning in Prague we have to stand for integration of diverse professions and look for gender balance

QUESTIONS before the project starts

1. WHERE ARE WOMEN EXPERTS from the field? Are they really architects, urban planners? Are they in cultural sector? Education? Politics?

women public space prague

2. HOW MANY OF ACTIVE AND VISIBLE WOMEN STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING? Many women engaged in the field of architecture, urban planning and increasing quality of urban life studied architecture and urban planning - but they are not always designing

women public space prague

3. WHAT ARE THE POSITIONS OF THESE WOMEN? What is the ratio between top, lower positions and freelancers?

women public space prague

4. THERE IS NO DEBATE ABOUT EMPOWERING WOMEN IN THESE FIELDS IN PRAGUE Is this really possible??

women public space prague

5. THERE IS NO NETWORK CONNECTING WOMEN EXPERTS FROM THE FIELDS OF ARCHITECTURE, URBAN PLANNING AND OTHER PROFESSIONS RELATED TO INCREASING QUALITY OF URBAN LIFE Although we cooperate and know about each other, do we actively support each other?

MISSION Women Public Space Prague (WPSP) aims to become an active umbrella network for women (but not only women) from diverse urban related professions (architecture, urban planning, education, cultural activities, art, research related to public space and development of community life) to exchange personal and professional experience, support, promote professional activities of women experts. In long-term horizon WPSP aims to investigate barriers to women participation in planning and decision-making processes in mentioned fields and identify steps leading towards bridging this gap.
