Thank you to all our contributors who make the ith a nod to Icelandic art and fashion, magazine come alive with all your experience and this issue of MilliOnAir magazine is filled with knowledge of the fashion and beauty industry. inspirational articles, health tips, trend reports and as Ruby Hammer MBE, our beauty editor, showcases ever an even more conscious choice of sustainability her palette for jewel toned smokey eyes and berry and wearability. stained lips. It’s been a dream of mine to do a shoot in Iceland for many years and although now things seem a little different with a new lockdown in place, the summer months boosted all of us with a ray of positivity and it’s in this spirit that we managed to produce breathtaking images on a mystical volcanic black sand beach in the land of fire and Ice. We were fortunate in a way that due to the restrictions in place the amount of people visiting the island was limited and we were able to do our fashion story almost undisturbed with no influx of tourists taking pictures. John Rowley worked his magic with the camera and Lisa Valencia brought her expertise which added extra glow to our beautiful models, Natasha and Liv.

Claire Lazaro, has our current mood spot on with her trend report “Duvet days” Bridget-Louise who has put together the ultimate Health and wellness transformation kit for the winter months and Juliet Herd on her endless search for the best places to eat and to visit. CLASSIC SMOKY EYES Emphasise your eyes with a classic smoky eye - Start with a light neutral shade in bone or ivory over the whole lid, blending up to the brow bone and into the inner corner of the eyes. Apply a mid-tone shadow all over the lid, followed by a shadow two shades darker and smudge from the outer corner inwards creating a V-shape between the socket and eyeline. The key to a smoky eye is to always keep the lash line the darkest point and blend, blend, blend! JEWEL TONED SMOKY EYES The term smoky is used by artists to describe a gradation of colour, give the classic smoky eye a twist with jewel tones from dazzling diamond shades to sapphire, emerald or amythest and mastering vibrant shades is to have a placement plan in mind, the lighter shade should sit all over the lid towards the inner corner, with the deeper colours being used to create contours in the crease and the darkest shades along the lash line. Don’t forget to apply colour to the lower lash line for added drama. If you are heading straight out from the office, go from day to play with CHARLOTTE TILBURY LUXURY PALETTE OF POPS IN DAZZLING DIAMONDS, each colour can be used individually or combined for a smoky effect.

MilliOnAir | BEAUTIFUL FASHION

Rene Macdonald of Lisou by Zoë Law

THE LONDON DESIGNER PACKING A PUNCH LISOU’S RENE MACDONALD

By Contributing Editor Juliet Herd

W

hen Rene Macdonald, founder of luxury womenswear brand Lisou, was emailed by customers during lockdown to compliment her on the beautiful packaging, she allowed herself a pat on the back.“It was full on; I was literally doing everything. It kept me sane,”she reflects with a smile. She also launched an Instagram Live video series of interviews with a squadron of inspirational women, ranging from artist and sculptor KateVine to British Fashion Council chair Stephanie Phair. So successful has the series proved with her growing band of followers and fans that she’s about to do her 31st chat, despite admitting that live interviewing was “not in my comfort zone”. There’s no doubt Macdonald has oodles of oomph; an innate ability to draw people to her with her natural charm, sunny disposition and fearless, can-do attitude. In just a few years, she’s managed to carve herself an impressive niche with her exquisite silks and exuberant prints, inspired by her African heritage, attracting a roll call of famous customers, including Cate Blanchett,Charlize Theron,Helen Mirren,Jodie Comer and Priyanka Chopra. For a small brand, Lisou certainly packs a punch. Radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, a contestant on the new Strictly Come Dancing series, appeared like a burst of sunshine on the October cover of Cosmopolitan in a signature mango heart print jacquard jacket and mini-skirt. Super-influencer Liza Koshy posted a picture to her 18.7 million (yes, that’s right!) Insta followers, wearing headto-toe Lisou and being hugged by none other than Michelle Obama, as part of their documentary for the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance.

MilliOnAir magazine

For down-to-earth Macdonald, these are still exciting ‘pinch-me’ moments. “As a small brand, when someone buys something, there’s literally an office of people dancing,” she laughs. “It really means a lot. I would love to dress Michelle Obama. If that happened, I would need to have a long lie down. I massively admire her as a human being.” A former stylist and academic, Macdonald had long harboured an ambition to start her own label as a way of giving expression to her love of vintage fashion and bold colour. She decided to take the plunge three years ago, opening up shop in Notting Hill. “There were things out there but I thought that I could bring something to the party that was different,” recalls the designer, who was born in Tanzania but has lived in the UK since the age of eight. “I sat down with my family [she and her businessman husband Andy have two grown-up sons] and everyone said, ‘Absolutely, go for it.’ My husband later came on board as CEO.” With no formal training – she studied modern languages at University College London – she relied on the dressmaker skills acquired from her mother, who taught her how to cut patterns and use a sewing machine from a young age. “She made everything from curtains to clothes,” Macdonald explains. “I remember being a little girl and saying, ‘I’m going to a party and this is what I want to wear,’ and she’d make it. When I was about seven, my mother said, ‘You’ve got to learn [how to sew].’ African children are usually very independent. It was lovely to spend that time with her.” It never occurred to Macdonald not to design her own prints for the sumptuous silks she sources in India, Japan and China. “When I started, I didn’t realise that most people didn’t do their own prints,” she admits. “I used to doodle on my text books at school and now I think it’s hilarious that it’s my job.” While her design silhouettes are classic European with a modern twist, her prints conjure the exotic architecture of Zanzibar, the clashing colours of the spice markets of Addis Ababa and the grasslands and forests of the Serengeti National Park. Travel has always inspired her - “it’s when your eyes are really open and there’s space in your mind to drink everything up” – but she also sees beauty in the simplest things, like autumn leaves spotted on her regular morning run in London’s royal parks, which led to the ‘Falling Leaves’ print in her AW20 collection. “I was looking at all these leaves on the ground and the different colours – red, yellow, orange and brown – and the next thing I knew I was stuffing them in my bum bag,” she says.

As a self-confessed maximalist, colour is at the heart of Macdonald’s design. It’s what connects her to her precious African homeland and sets her brand apart from all the beige and black that tends to swamp the British high street in winter. “In Tanzania you walk down the street and everyone is dressed in full colour, men included,” enthuses the woman dubbed the “happy clothes” impresario by Forbes magazine. “People aren’t afraid to wear pink trousers with a patterned orange top. It’s really joyous when you see a lot of colour. Slowly people are learning about the psychology of colour and how it really lifts your mood. All I’m trying to do is inject the world with a little bit of happiness and love.” Although she returns often to Tanzania to visit relatives (2020 being the exception, thanks to Covid-19!), Macdonald’s early years were nomadic, largely spent travelling throughout eastern and southern Africa with her UN diplomat parents. Her late father was a geologist and mining engineer, who advised governments on their mineral resources, and her late mother worked for the International Labour Organisation. The family settled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when she was four, but the 1977 military coup and resulting civil war turned her home into a war zone. “The schools closed when I was six and were turned into military camps, so I had to be home schooled,” she says. “Mum would set my homework in the morning and mark it at lunchtime, but at the end of the day, I had to be really disciplined and do it myself. I couldn’t play with other children and it got to the stage where it wasn’t normal; I was this mini adult.”

“When you grow up with war, it shapes you in a whole different way,” continues Macdonald, an only child until her brother was born when she was ten. “Sirens would go off across the city [at curfew] and everyone would have to go home. I remember lying underneath my parents’ bed in darkness with my mum and doing Lego with a torch. We had to close all the shutters because of the tanks going past outside. As a child, you don’t fear things in the same way, and on one level, it seemed quite exciting. You’re not aware you could potentially die.”

MilliOnAir magazine

Her parents decided to send her to boarding school in England for her own safety. “They waved a pin around on a map and sent me to boarding school in the middle of the Gloucestershire countryside,” she laughs, marvelling now at the randomness of their choice. “It was a real culture shock – I’d never experienced cold like it.” “I was the only black girl, so it was a steep learning curve,” she adds with understatement. “There were definite moments that were uncomfortable, but they were all life lessons. I met my best friend Lucy Creed at school and her whole family were incredible; I had a bedroom in their house and we’re still friends to this day. “At the same time, when I went home to Tanzania, my family all thought I was incredibly lucky to be getting an education in the UK. My cousins would have chewed their arms off to change places with me.” The experience taught her resilience, independence and, crucially, how to assimilate, which included picking up a British accent in double-quick time. “I

MilliOnAir magazine

will talk to anyone and make friends in half an hour,” she jokes. More seriously, she says: “It gave me that ability to want to meet people and not be afraid to approach someone and start a conversation, which is useful in this industry.” After finishing her degree at University College London, Macdonald worked in marketing for an advertising agency before a chance encounter with a TV stylist led to her assisting on a magazine photoshoot. “I loved it and went from there,” she says, listing clients ranging from Noughties’ pop group Here’Say to Mel B. It was after returning to academia as a university lecturer when her children were small that she began to explore her own history and embarked on a Master’s in African politics and history at the prestigious SOAS University of London. “I felt I had a lot of gaps in my knowledge,” she says. “I knew about Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots but it was all British history. The library at SOAS gave me palpitations. I wanted to be able to read everything; it was an overwhelming experience and I drank it up.” Her awareness of society’s racial and socioeconomic inequalities was also shaped by her mother’s work with the African National Congress (ANC) in southern Africa, where she supported victims of letter bombs and other apartheid atrocities. “If she couldn’t arrange for them to get a workplace grant, she would bring them home,” says Macdonald fondly. “ We couldn’t really complain, because if we did, mum would say, ‘There’s a one-legged man in the room next door.’ We were lucky and privileged and politically aware.”

Rene Macdonald of Lisou by Zoë Law

She credits her parents with instilling in her “this really wonderful gift” of wanting to give back, so it was a no brainer that philanthropy also formed a big part of her vision for Lisou. The brand currently donates all proceeds from one style per collection to charitable projects. Inspired by her parents’ community work, Macdonald set up the LIFE Trust in Tanzania, which offers grants to young Africans unable to afford education and medical costs. The aim is that those students helped financially through school and university by Lisou, will ultimately be willing to put something back into their own communities. Closer to home in West London, the brand runs an annual textile competition in partnership with local schools supporting creative arts in the community. Last year’s winners had their designs made into silk scarves with profits going to their schools. Macdonald says she’s on a mission to inspire other young black people to follow careers in the creative arts. “For a lot of traditional, first generation immigrant families there isn’t really an acceptance of the creative fields; they want their children to get secure jobs, such as becoming a doctor or accountant,” she explains. “It’s amazing how overwhelmed the [competition] winners were. One secondary school girl said, ‘I always thought I was thick’. It was her first time winning something in front of her peers.” “I’ve always felt strongly that fashion can do lots of good,” she adds. “It’s not enough to be a brand anymore, you have a duty to be doing other things.” As part of Lisou’s slow fashion ethos, it has teamed up with non-profit organisation One Tree Planted to plant five trees across four continents – Africa, North America, Latin America, Asia and Australia – for every full-priced clothing item sold. A life-long vintage collector, Macdonald is also a firm believer in quality over quantity. “We’re not in the business of saying to people, ‘Buy loads.’ A really good quality, beautiful shirt is something you can wear for a long time. I love the fact that you’re not going to see our prints anywhere else; if you live in California and you wear one of our dresses, the chances of bumping into anyone else [in the same dress] are very slim.” A trans-seasonal brand, Lisou has expanded its repertoire to include heavenly Mongolian lambswool jackets in a rainbow palette, jewel-coloured jacquard skirts, luxurious velvet pant suits, striking metallic pleated dresses and wool trousers. The AW20 collection was inspired by the feature film Hidden Figures, which highlighted the crucial work done by black female mathematicians, who worked at NASA during the Space Race in the 1960s and remained unrecognised until 2015.

“I commissioned my friend Kate Viner to draw a ‘flying lady’ for me to represent a woman’s strength,” explains Macdonald, who works from her West London studio. “After I saw Hidden Figures, I started researching all the women who had gone unrecognised in history for doing something extraordinary, and thought, ‘I’m going to take flying ladies and dot them all over my prints,’ including hiding them in the ‘Falling Leaves’ print. You can’t see it’s a woman until you get closer. “As a woman it’s important to me to recognise other women; we are in this together.” It was Macdonald’s mother who taught her that as a black woman embarking on a professional career, she would have to work 110 percent harder than her white counterparts. “I understood what mum was telling me –already as a woman you have to work harder, but being black meant it was going to be even tougher,’ she reflects. ” “That served me well; I never expected anything to be easy. I’ve definitely had jobs where things have been said that weren’t appropriate or people’s behaviour has been very obviously about my race. Because my parents talked to me about it and my dad went to uni here, I never took these things personally. With the whole BLM movement, you see the younger generation getting a lot angrier but you can’t spend your life being angry. It’s more about killing people with kindness and being polite. “You’ve got to be willing to take little steps towards changing attitudes – and the key is not forgetting about it [the BLM movement] and saying, ‘Well, that’s fixed now,’ because it’s not, by any stretch of the imagination.” Macdonald feels proud to stand alongside other blackowned brands. “By promoting black businesses, it makes people aware of what’s out there. If I manage to inspire someone else, my job is done.” www.lisou.co.uk

Slowing down with Connolly

AUTUMN/WINTER 2020 COLLECTION

Edited by Marcella Martinelli

The essential elements of a wardrobe are reflected in timeless elegance. With tailoring designed by Marc Audibet and knits by Lorraine Acornley, we have a uniform that transcends seasons or even a generation. The collection naturally reflects the shift in fashion as consumption lessen in response to the global decline in pace. Well made and well fitting garments with ’statement-less’ pieces and a prescient collection with chic and sporty clothes you can wear in a field or in town. A take on the classic British trench is cinched at the waist with a super wide belt. The knitwear nods to Surrealism and the Connolly Circuit Sweater in chunky ribbed cashmere, a homage to the Connolly motor racing heritage and the chequered flag. The collection speaks of a post war atmosphere, considered and creative, made both to last and to look forward.

Duvet Days By Fashion Contributor Clare Lazaro

A/W 2020 Moncler 1952

(with the country's remaining 4 fur farms to close no later than 2025) it seems that the fur industry is undeniably in decline. 'Humane Society International' credits public opinion as a major driving force behind this move, as the popularity of fur wearing has been waning globally. Reports of animal cruelty practices shed light on the industry and contributed to a burgeoning support for animal rights in general. And all of a sudden real fur started to look at best, dated and vain, at worst, barbaric. Whilst the warmth and cosiness of fur has always been its USP, purists argue against faux as an acceptable alternative because this still fetishises the wearing of animal skins, which might lead to the re-emergence of it's ornamental popularity. This valid point leads us neatly to the puffer, the duvet coat, padding, quilting, wadding and stuffing. Down and feathers can be sourced ethically without compromising animal welfare and as a bi-product of the food industry. Clearly not for vegans but surely a t's that time of year when the business of keeping step in the right direction? Artist, fashion designer and animal lover. Meet Harpa Einarsdottir the Icelandic powerhouse By Marcella Martinelli

O

ne sunny afternoon as I walked around Reykjavik I came across a charming small art gallery filled with paintings and clothes, as I ventured in I was met by a plethora of colours and wonderful things and this is where I met the strikingly beautiful Harpa Einarsdottir. Our meeting was brief but I remember thinking that she was very talented and had a mystifying air about her. Through the years, I came to know her work as an artist and fashion designer and her unique ability to create her own universe that portrays itself in her art. Her fashion work has featured in numerous magazines and she has also designed costumes for feature films and in the theatre which lead to her being nominated for the Nordic Code design awards for her work with CCP Games which creates virtual world entertainment. She is the head designer and owner of MYRKA fashion label and also creates multimedia art under her artist name ZISKA. Her designs are bold, unapologetic, unorthodox yet sartorial and modern. A dichotomy of urban street wear and luxury lounge wear, with an emphasis on elegant Nordic ruggedness. Myrka’s priority is to explore technology and sustainable manufacturing to raise awareness about how we consume fashion. Her upcoming collection “Rewilding” is inspired by the concept of a metaphysical dimension to our revolt that allows us to pass completely outside the concrete confines of modern industrialist dogma. The collection is to be produced from natural fabrics like cotton, silk, linen, wool and upcycled leather with minimum or no waste in the production cycle. Myrka's subjective presence-in-the-present means that they do not just observe events unfolding, but participate in the process. They are part of the self-shaping of The Universe, with all the responsibility that this implies.

Action!

Thor Saevarsson By Marcella Martinelli

B

orn in Reykjavik and raised in Stockholm, Glasgow, London and now living in Milan with his beautiful Icelandic wife and children,Thor Saevarsson is a director with an enviable pedigree and a rare mind. Considered one of Europe's brightest directors, Thor is the creative force behind award winning advertising campaigns such as Nike, Sony, Coca Cola, Porsche and many others. He has also been recognised as one of Scandinavia's top directing talent with nominations and awards at Cannes Lions, Clio, Epica to name a few. So what makes him so different from any other directors? Thor explains "It all comes down to my personal connection with the idea or the script, I need to feel inspired and motivated by the creativity, whether it's an all-out action spot or a more moody piece. It's about finding the story, connecting with it and translating it to the audience." It's his unique style and edgy creative vision that helped him create the Quarantine Iceland photography series which gave him some respite from the solitary lockdown in Iceland during the pandemic in march 2020. The photographs, which were part of an exhibition in Reykjavik in may 2020 are now part of a beautiful coffee book which captures an eerie atmosphere and set out to document these strange times focusing on the empty spaces of closed offices, shopping malls, swimming pools, theatres, and airports. So what is next for this talented director? A supernatural thriller currently in development for production in 2021 and who knows, maybe he will be licensed to charm us some more with with his bewitching mind. www.thorsaevarsson.com/bio

The Foundation of Modern Cancer Treatment

by Health & Wellness Editor Bridget Hancock

Integrative Oncology is a patient-centred, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilises mind and body practices, natural products and lifestyle modifications alongside conventional cancer treatments.

MilliOnAir magazine

With 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women now predicted to get Cancer, the question arises... How can we support cancer treatment to help patients? How do we improve recovery ? How do we avoid Cancer altogether?

“Working with clients I see some people breeze thought treatment and others struggle but I compare it to running a marathon, It’s never easy but good preparation is key. “ FACT The body can restore itself by boosting Immunity and nutritional status, detoxification and supplementation of the co-factors that drive the body functions, This is the foundation of modern cancer treatment.

3

. IV therapy or a booster Vitamin D shot is an effective way to get minerals and vitamins into our cells as it avoids the digestive process that often results in lack of absorption as it flushes out and is of little or no benefit. IV therapy can lower stress and pain as well as increase our immunity by adding specific nutrients to the body.

4

. Adopt a predominantly plant based diet, reduce acid forming foods and remove refined carbohydrates from the diet - such as bread, rice, pasta, pizza which have little goodness. Carbohydrate converts to glucose and cancer cells feed on glucose not oxygen like healthy cells, so reducing glucose can starve cancer cells. Cook less, steam lightly and eat raw before 4pm as often as possible.

5

. Add 1/2 cup organic Aloe vera Juice to support the digestive tract from start to finish protecting the oesophagus through to the colon!

So how did we make it easier?

1

.Vegetable Juicing - Fresh organic vegetable juices such as carrot (1 bag) with a little lemon, ginger and turmeric root, twice a day is the easiest way to get boost nutrients which are the cornerstone to cancer fighting according to clinics working with integrative oncology. Add a green Juice to your diet composed of organic green leaves, cucumber, mint and parsley and lemon and drink immediately for maximum effect.

2

. Add Filtered Alkaline water to your routine to prevent disease. Our body works to keep us in an alkaline state but when we bombard it with processed foods, fizzy drinks, dairy, meats, coffee, alcohol, stress ad pharmaceutical drugs that are acid forming, the body has to draw minerals from our bones in order to maintain the balance. Dr Otto Warburg received a Nobel prize in

''No disease including Cancer can live in an alkaline environment.'' 1931 for his work on Cancer.

MilliOnAir magazine

6

. Boost your Vitamin D up to 150-200nmol/l. Research has shown the current level of 77nmol considered adequate is too low and doctors are finding that a large proportion of the population are below this current level. Vitamin D is linked to immunity and cancer thrives in a compromised immune system so time to supplement. Booster shots take no time to do and cost ÂŁ35-ÂŁ40 for those who are really low.

7

. Breathe & Meditate- Inhaling slowly to a count of 5, filling the belly with air, exhale bringing belly button to spine for 5 slow breaths. Repeat 6 times to bring the body out of fight and flight and into rest and digest. We need to actively reduce the stress hormones in the and which can be done by diaphragm breath, meditation, singing and being in Nature.

8

. Nutritional testing, book an online consultation with a Nutritionist who can look into your diet and recommend some vitamin and mineral testing to see where you maybe low and get you running at optimal function. For example the B vitamins are needed to turn our food into energy. If they are in short supply the process is compromised and the outcome can be tiredness, irritability and weight gain.

9

. Detoxification- The liver does all the work removing toxins and needs support before disease sets in. In cancer patients the liver is generally not working as well as it should. it is essential to add cruciferous vegetables, lightly steamed, with or without spices , cauliflower, broccoli, broccoli sprouts, kale, Brussel sprouts , rocket, radishes, or watercress into your diet daily to support the liver along with other supplements.

10

. Take a walk in Nature. Cancer patients who exercise in this way achieve greater results than those who don’t. ( Ferioli 2018) Furthermore Multiple studies show that cardio exercise 30 minutes 3 times a week with strength training twice a week reduces cancer risk considerably (Rezende 2018). Furthermore walking in Nature and deep diaphragm breathing of fresh air helps to lower stress and improve oxygen, digestion bowel function and wellbeing. By Beauty Expert Ciona Johnson-King @CionaJK

Here’s a look at some of the best products and most ingenious devices that will take you through the festive season and beyond. From hair to skincare, it’s where beauty meets technology! MilliOnAir magazine

T3 Lucea ID £189 @t3micro If you’re not already a fan of super sleek T3 hair technology their latest innovation will surely persuade you. T3 has created the Lucea ID the future of hair styling. Just like your smart phone, the Lucea ID has touch screen technology that is unlocked with a double tap of the ‘home’ button. This styling tool delivers bespoke heat programmed just for your hair. We all want maximum effect but with minimal damage when it comes to hair straighteners. But we’re guessing the temperature setting. Too low and you need to go through the hair repeatedly, too high and it could be damaging. The Lucea ID has a smart micro chip that calculates your optimum setting. Just tap in details, for texture, length and whether your hair is coloured and it heats in seconds. Not only does it remember your setting it has a ion generator to minimise static frizz and increase shine with smooth CeraSync Heaters for fast one-pass styling. When you need a top up there’s even a refresh mode, which is a lower heat. This stylists dream has T3 style edge design which means you can easily create curves, curls, waves or super sleek straight hair.

Exceptional results giving extended hair styles, that protects against humidity. Wash less frequently? yes please! Perfect for all hair types, texture and lengths, this lightweight spray uses long chain polymers to form a hydrophobic shield that locks in moisture and protects each strand of hair during blow drying. PURE MUSCLE MAGIC How the VIEMAX SCULPT treatment got our client back in her saddle By Vicky Grammatikopoulou

MilliOnAir magazine

T

he latest Electro-Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) treatments claim to build muscle, burn fat and help you recover from injury. But do they really work? EMS treatments are the latest trend in the aesthetic medicine and fitness world, promising to help you simultaneously burn fat and build muscle. Indeed, the technological advances in this area are remarkable, with machines essentially performing the equivalent of 20,000 sit-ups or squats during a single 30-minute session – all while you relax lying on a bed! But surely, you may think, it’s too good to be true, right? When we introduced the CE certified, high performance VIEMAX Sculpt, which offers a wide range EMS for HIIT, Strength, Hypertrophy and combination Body Contouring programmes for men and women, our staff first “road-tested” it and gave their stamp of approval. And now, a few months on, I can say that the results don’t cease to amaze both staff and clients alike. However, this treatment is not just for slimming, toning, and defining body shape. By building muscle strength, the EMS technology can also help speed up recovery from injury or from sustained periods of lack of exercise. It is one of these cases, namely the success story of Vanessa Daly, that I wanted to talk to you about in this issue.

prior to my injury,” explains Vanessa. “I wasn’t sure why.” Karen, her trainer also noticed that Vanessa had difficulty when turning left on her horse and that she also developed a lack in stability to canter, which is a mediumfast pace. In addition to giving her strengthening exercises, the trainer advised Vanessa to see a chiropractor. It wasn’t until June 2020 that Vanessa discovered that she had actually broken her back in the fall. This explained her difficulties in her riding, as her left leg had increasingly become weaker because the break had affected a major nerve too. Around that time and during a visit for her facial at the Vie Aesthetics clinic in Essex, Vanessa heard of our VIEMAX Sculpt. Learning about the musclestrengthening properties of this EMS treatment, she booked herself in for a consultation to see if it could help. During that initial assessment, the measurements showed a significant difference in the circumference of Vanessa’s thighs and a visible loss of abdominal muscle tone too. Our practitioners found that Vanessa’s left leg had become a whole one inch thinner than her right leg due to the underuse of the muscles since the injury.

I can still see Vanessa literally jumping for joy during her post-treatment review session last week. Understandably so; only six weeks after her initial visit to us, her measurements now show that her “bad” leg has grown over half an inch in girth where the muscle has rebuilt itself and the waist is now an inch less. I can’t forget how her face lights up as she looks at her before-and-after pictures too; her abdomen is noticeably more toned and reduced in body fat. Vanessa, an amateur competitive horse-rider, fell from her steed in November 2019. Originally diagnosed in hospital with a fractured pelvis, she was back on her saddle weeks later. However, many months on she still was experiencing problems. “Basically, my riding had regressed, and I couldn’t compete at the level that I was

MilliOnAir magazine

The improvements continued. By the end of her six weeks, even her trainer describes this sudden progress as “miraculous”. “I can now do half-hour lessons with cantering and I’m more stable in my seat from using my core,” says Vanessa. “My confidence has improved dramatically. My trainer said it was like two different riders! I’m virtually back to where I was before the injury.” EMS can also support complement existing exercise for added benefits. “My legs are more even now, which was the priority,” says Vanessa. “I wasn’t doing this for aesthetic effect, but for athletic performance and recovery, and restore my confidence in the saddle. So, the fact it’s made my stomach visibly flatter is a bonus!” At Vie Aesthetics, we are so happy with the results we see, that we are now adding more VIEMAX devices to create our first VIEMAX Studio in Essex and soon in London too. If you consider trying the EMS, feel free to contact me for more information vicky@vie-aesthetics.com or book yourself in for a consultation and taster session: www.vie-aesthetics.com Vicky Grammatikopoulou CEO, Vie Aesthetics For more information on the VIEMAX Sculpt EMS Body Contouring, visit www.vie-aesthetics.com/treatments Vanessa was advised to have a 12-session course of VIEMax Sculpt to build her core strength and address the muscular imbalance in her legs. This included 30-minute sessions of targeted treatment on both legs, and 30 minutes on her abdomen, twice a week for six weeks. Fast-forward and 7 weeks later, during her post-course review, Vanessa is sitting in the same office again and this time she can’t hide her delight when our practitioner shows her the measurements and the pictures. It is not that she hadn’t noticed the difference for herself, though. Vanessa noticed improvements with her riding after just the fourth session. “I was sitting straighter on my horse and I was even able to canter a little,” she says. She even participated in her first dressage event, and finished an impressive fifth out of 15, and third out of 20. But most importantly, her performance was encouraging. “The judges said that my horse moved quite straight and anyone who rides horses will know riding straight is one of the hardest things to do!”

Making Healthy Living Achievable

with Rosemary Ferguson by Davina Catt

MilliOnAir magazine

"S

he was a force to be reckoned with and wouldn't allow anything faddy. She loved her food but also the idea that you could heal your body through what you ate - in that way she was so ahead of her time," enthuses the much admired and go-to, nutritionist Rosemary Ferguson about her grandmother, one of the first women in the country to have opened a health food shop.

MilliOnAir magazine

Indeed Ferguson's is a tale well told: a peripatetic upbringing between Scotland and Rio De Janeiro saw her migrate to London at 18 years, to be scouted in McDonalds(the irony) before becoming one of the biggest models (Prada, Versace, Dior) and faces synonymous with the 90's grunge era. Whilst rebellion was then a style of living; "I am glad I lived in the 90's, we did use to be given champagne backstage, there was really nothing sinister to it, it's just times have changed and we live in a different world now," nutrition always ran in Ferguson's veins - her stepfather and sister are homeopaths - and after 15 years modelling and three children (with husband mega Brit artist, Jake Chapman) she focused on fine-tuning her understanding of naturopathy and nutrition at The College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2012.

facialist Teresa Tarmey, 'she's passionate about skin but recognises that without proper nutrition you won't get skin you want (there are a few people that are genetically lucky!)' Together they currently have devised a "double pronged" attack by way of a Motcomb Street pop up and an area in Tarmey's Notting Hill located studio that offers juices targeted to support everything from inflammation to collagen matrix in the skin, 'there are numerous possibilities we might do a 5 day plan there and winter soups.'

Indeed it's Ferguson's ever inventive ways and how she pushes herself and notions of nutrition out of boxes that is infectious. Her favourite pastime though is "going into people's kitchens." Not so dissimilar to a wardrobe stylist, she offers a service whereby she spends time going through Armed with this sense of realism; "I still like to go out, the cupboards, assessing, restructuring and repacking fridges and freezers. Or organising tailor made cooking classes at word 'restrict' makes me wince," it's an 'achievability' your home or hers. mindset fit for life pressures and low time restraints of modern, working women that have garnered a rave There's a sense of accessibility to Ferguson's food antics following in not just the glitterati looking for a nutrition but most importantly "I think people who follow find that kick but a diverse demographic of women seeking to they find what works exactly for them." redress their day to day eating plans. Whilst Ferguson makes it easy to tap into her philosophy - 'Juice' her bible Meanwhile her boundless curiosity around the subject filled with easy to follow recipes with jazzy names like 'Daily Helper' and 'Hangover Cure' is tailored to specific never dissipates; she's currently studying for a masters in Advanced Nutrition and has exams in November for ailments, her website and Instagram are filled with original, inviting and easy to follow recipes and immersive functional medicine training whilst in demand for more propositions: 'I have a couple of product ideas coming up, step by step videos, one always feels part of a broader hotels I am working with and another book.' After all education on what to try for your whom doesn't want to have the chance to 'eat well, feel own body type as well as general nutrition life tips for asthma sufferers to those approaching menopause or even great and joyful, but still be able to go out and dance on a table!' just going on holiday. It's the '5 day plan', though, which has more recently become the Rosemary Ferguson calling card. Born out of the Harley Street Clinic she runs weekly for clients wanting private consultations,(she now lives mainly in the Cotswalds and is available there too or digitally) "I started talking to people a lot about food plans as a way to detect problems or foods to remove. And then it came to me that I really wanted to show people that you can feel different after 5 days whilst still eating well and feeling full. I am not against fasting but it's been misused and misunderstood over the years." So from a small idea to a whole operation, Ferguson now sends out to postcodes across London (they land on your doorstep every evening) a box filled with three nutrient dense meals with one mid 'liquid' day of juices and soups, and including a supplement protocol of probiotics to help gut, digestion and immunity. Infact it was through this 360 approach she met super

he Art of Microneedling, also known as 'Collagen Induction Therapy' or 'Dermarolling' is a game changing approach to the ultimate no filter necessary skin ritual. I want to extoll the virtues of Microneedling and get one of our rollers into as many people’s hands as possible.

How did you get your start in the beauty industry?

How did OW come about? My own skin issues were the driver. I left the City with a plan, albeit a little sketchy, and one that continues to evolve. I wanted to capture and create a hydrating delivery system and skincare solution sitting between dermatologist grade treatment and home treatment. I wanted to transform the face and body to its most healthy and hydrated form. My whole belief is that if your skin is properly hydrated you will radiate a healthy, natural glow. And so I immersed myself in everything aesthetics related, all the trade shows: ACE, FACE, Cosmoprof, meeting dermatologists and experienced practitioners. and contains only water and hypochlorous Acid. Other brands sell a tray where you pour alcohol solution in, dip the roller to sanitise then throw away the solution. Sanitising the rollers with our spray is much more efficient. We are a small independent business so don’t mass produce. Everything in my brand I have carefully designed and trialled before launching. The platform I have built is customer focused, with How To videos, Scientific studies, News & Views from influencers and we encourage customer feedback and suggestions. We aim to reply to every single message and read every single review. We’ve made a couple of small refinements and have a few more planned on the back of this feedback. It has been so satisfying to hear from customers sharing the improvements they’ve experienced with their skin and hair and they love my packaging!

What moment in your career are you most proud of? Leaving the City to start my own business. Not many people make the jump despite their desires. The City experience was great in many ways, however I was hungry to do more, especially to be my own boss. And yes, We have now introduced The Matte Series, which is our I’ve made mistakes with OW, and I’ll probably make Microneedling rollers in matte black and matte white many more but that’s all part of the journey when trying with matching protective cases. We’ve also developed our something new. HAIR rollers which are perfect to thicken and strengthen hair, especially when combined with a hair growth serum, such as Nanogen, who we’ve now partnered with to ensure your hair reaches its fullest potential. Microneedling encourages the serum to penetrate the scalp and of course a healthy scalp is key to healthy hair growth. They also work wonders for men looking to grow fuller beards.

What sets OW apart from the other microneedling brands? I wanted to create a brand where we put the customer first. Educate consumers on the benefits of Microneedling, the do’s and don’ts, products that complement the treatment for ultimate results. Alongside that I wanted to build a minimalist yet strong bold brand that transcends genders. It was important the concept of microneedling was easy for customers to understand and the messaging was clear, that although the rollers contain needles, the treatment isn’t painful and can be done in your own home with no downtime. I also wanted an easy solution to sanitise the products to keep them bacteria free, so we created a sanitising spray which is alcohol free

MilliOnAir magazine

How important is sustainability for OW and what kind of sustainable business strategies are you implementing? Sustainability is hugely important and we certainly want to be part of the solution. It’s impossible for a consumer brand like OW not to use resources and throughout our production chain we aim to use recycled and recyclable materials where possible. Many suppliers are still working on their ‘green’ offering and we stay current by attending the Packaging shows to hear about new developments. We have recently replaced some of our packaging with bags made from natural resin which are fully biodegradable and ‘OK Compost’ certified. Our gift boxes and postal boxes are made from recycled sources that are also 100% recyclable. We’re not completely there yet but we’re committed and will keep trying one day at a time.

What does a typical day look like for you? I start my day with some form of exercise, either Yoga (I’m a 500hr qualified Power Vinyasa Practitioner) or my Peloton (I finally joined that club). I’m trying to run more, but it’s always a challenge! No matter where I am I always make time for exercise. I like to keep my body strong and flexible. I have a call with the team to get updates on their specific projects. We’ll go through marketing ideas, influencers we’re working with, PR, collaborations, new product suggestions, packaging solutions, social media, retail partners. It’s a very small team but it works. We all value each other’s skillset and input to make things happen. Then I make my way through my To Do List. I’m pretty organised and focused. I finish the day playing a little Piano, just 30 mins or so, it’s a wonderful way to relax.

''Leaving the City to start my own business. Not many people make the jump despite their desires. The City experience was great in many ways, however I was hungry to do more, especially to be my own boss. And yes, I’ve made mistakes with OW, and I’ll probably make many more but that’s all part of the journey when trying something new.''

What's your favourite part of your job? Independence. Planning my own schedule. Decision making. Owning the end to end process. Brainstorming new ideas and products with the team. Hiring the people I want with the skill set needed.

What inspires you? Strength, health, independence and resilience. I love brands with soul.

What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs? Just do it!!! Often we’re too afraid to make the change but if you have an idea or something you’re really passionate about then grasp the opportunity. Nothing ventured nothing gained. There will be many ups and downs of course and it will be challenging. OW has been the biggest learning experience in my 25 year career. Initially it was just me doing everything, which at times was very overwhelming: product design, sourcing manufacturers, website, e-commerce, social media, photography, social content, blogs, distribution, partnerships, PR, legals, trademarks….but I believe everything is possible. Be a sponge! I take as much as I can from every situation and think ‘how can I apply that to OW?’. The biggest area I underestimated was Marketing. Really think about your routes to market and have a clear strategy. Put the customer needs first with an easy customer journey. Make sure you give great service alongside a great product. Be kind. Be understanding. Both will lead to repeat customers. One day you’ll be very thankful you tried and didn’t give up. Refine things as you go.

MilliOnAir magazine

What is your daily skin-care routine? Three nights a week I Microneedle followed by a hydrating Hyaluronic Acid serum. When I have more time I’ll use a biocellulose Hyaluronic Acid sheet mask, they’re great to restore and hydrate the skin. I’ll follow up with my Dermalux Flex, which is red light therapy for collagen stimulation and to minimise inflammation and redness. In the morning I cleanse, apply my Vitamin C serum followed by an eye cream, Hyaluronic Acid serum and a broad spectrum SPF.

What does beauty mean to you? A smile and a positive attitude! People with a nice mix of confidence without being arrogant. Loyalty, kindness, trust, happiness, be kind to yourself and don’t beat yourself up.

What are you goals for the brand? What’s next? I live and breathe OW! I have so many ideas for the brand, however Rome wasn’t built in a day and like all businesses I’m always mindful of cashflow. We have a few lovely collaborations planned and an exciting new product launching later in the year which is Cryotherapy. It’s an amazing product to de-puff the eyes and completely freshen the entire face. Perfect before applying makeup, after travelling and after Microneedling. They work for migraines too! We have just received approval for the trademark ‘FOR FACE’ and our new product will be ‘FOR FACE - The Ice Sticks’. I am always on the look out for beauty regimens that fit my brand ethos. Its all about bringing out what you already have inside! Our focus for the next 12 months will be developing our retail partners and introducing new collaborations as we continue the pursuit of healthy hydrated skin. The Power of Microneedling.

The people we meet on your travels inspire us and it's through this connection that we have come to know the sustainable Icelandic design company As We Grow which is owned by GRETA HLÖÐVERSDÓTTIR. As We Grow is inspired by a true story about a knitted sweater journey from one child to another over several years. A mother in Reykjavík knitted a woolen sweater for her son. After years of use, he eventually grew out of it, and the sweater was passed on to a friend’s daughter. For a while the little girl refused to wear much else. Eventually, the sweater moved on again, to the next family. One winter it got lost, but as spring came the sweater appeared from underneath a pile of snow in the backyard. With a bit of care, it was as good as new again. Captured in photos in family albums, carried in backpacks on countryside hikes, folded in wardrobes in kids’ rooms from Reykjavík to Akureyri, Amsterdam and back, the sweater has been traveling from one child to another as a hand-me-down amidst this group of friends and family for well over a decade now. The sweater became a part of a family history, linking a chain of people together. “This is the kind of a clothing we want our children to wear" "Buy fewer and better things: Stay warm, look good, with less" is the motto of the brand.

In the early 80s I was a regular at Billy s and the Blitz and ran the club, Hell with Steve Strange and Rusty Egan. In 1981, I fronted the Latin funk band, Blue Rondo A La Turk. We were signed to Virgin and got a no 1 in Brazil. I m probably best known for opening The Wag Club in Wardour Street in 1983. I was founder, host, director and DJ for 18 years a true home for outsiders and rebels everyone from Prince to Lee Perry played live there. From the mid eighties onwards I ve DJ d in the best clubs and parties in London, Tokyo, New York, LA, Paris, Barcelona, Milan and Ibiza.

“Louise Brooks was the most seductive sexual image of woman ever committed to celluloid and the only unrepentant hedonist, pure pleasure seeker I have ever met and this comes over in her films,” remarked eminent critic, Kenneth Tynan, who spent two days interviewing her in 1978. “And when men bored her she left them and when Hollywood bored her she left and went into retirement from which she never emerged.” An exerpt from Chris Sullivan’s book Rebel Rebel

available now on Amazon What makes me qualified to tell the story of rebels and mavericks? Over the years, I ve been a DJ, author, nightclub host, pop star, painter, style commentator, entrepreneur and fashion designer. In fact, I ve always been proud of never having a real job . As a teenager in Merthyr Tydfil in the early seventies, I was a ska-loving, moon-stomping suedehead, listening to David Bowie and Lou Reed or bowling up the motorway to catch the Northern soul sessions at the the Wigan Casino.

I m also a journalist: first at The Face, then a columnist and stylist for Loaded and for four years from 2000, I was GQ s style editor. Since then I ve freelanced for The Times, Esquire, Telegraph, Independent, Guardian, and L Uomo Vogue. I ve written two books, the international best-seller, Punk (with Stephen Colegrave) and the definitive chronicle of club culture of the 80s, We Can Be Heroes (with Graham Smith), and a 9-part TV documentary series Gangs of Britain presented by my old chums Martin and Gary Kemp. My first film, Anarchy in the UK (a punk road movie) is in production with Hacienda films. I still DJ weekly in London and pop up at parties and openings all over the world. When not gallivanting, I live in Maida Vale with my long suffering spouse Leah, ten year-old son Finbar and a cat called Tuesday.

MilliOnAir | UNCOVERED

Uncovered By Alison Lowe

When we think of the epitome of luxury – it isn’t often that we talk about slippers and lounge wear. Yet, the must-have fashion accessories this season are exactly that.

W

hat is the epitome of luxury this winter then? Slippers. Yes you heard me right. Slippers. Many of us shudder at the thought of ‘house slippers’! But I am not referring to those ugly slipper boots, plaid granny mules or a generic sheepskin slide on. I am talking about the stylish designs that every celebrity and fashionista are currently wearing and posting all over their social media feeds. Numerous press pages and column inches have been focusing on the likes of the Hadid sisters, the Jenner’s and even Rihanna wearing fluffy slippers not only at home, but also out on the street, on shopping trips, or in the recording studios.

and have worked together on boutique hotels and restaurant refurbishments, but then decided to try something new. They put their heads together to lovingly create a beautiful range of fun but beautiful fashion accessories.

The slipper is the fashion accessory this winter, a trend that has grown from us all spending more time at home but wanting to still add some glamour to our lives. I started a quest to upgrade my ‘stay at home’ wardrobe after seeing my social media feed become filled with images of slippers and loungewear and today I want to share two of the brands I uncovered. One particular brand of slipper kept cropping up on my all social media feeds and I was thrilled to finally get my hands on a pair from one of my favourite independent boutiques Chloe James Lifestyle in St Albans. I have treated myself to a snuggly pair of fluffy, luxe faux fur slippers from UK brand Laines London. Launched at the end of 2019, Laines London was founded by Chantelle and partner Angi. They both have a passion for interior design

MilliOnAir magazine

They say that their main aim is to make people smile when wearing the brand and for their first collections, they have designed a range of glamorous slippers, socks, and velvet bags. The slippers have definitely made me smile. They come in a pretty organza bag and each pair is adorned with a glamorous beaded jewelled brooch, with lots of choices from hearts, to panthers and the lobsters which have become hugely popular. The brooch can be removed and worn on any items of clothing or on your favourite accessory. The slippers will make any fashionista stand out and are perfect for days at home or you can just slip them on to nip to the shops or the beauty parlour. The brand says “We have loved bringing joy to everyone in lockdown with our glamorous but also comfy fluffy slippers - they have been perfect for people to still feel lovely even though they have been stuck at home.” I can’t wait to see what they launch next and already have their clutch bags and socks on my wish list.

For the lounge wear I looked to another British brand that is regularly featured by fashion influencers and in the press. When it comes to lounging around the house, I like practicality as well as comfort, but often end up changing backwards and forwards between sportswear and nightwear and was fed up with the constant changing from day, to evening to night. I have searched high and low for the right thing and purchased lots of nightwear and loungewear that failed to live up to my expectations. I finally found the perfect pieces at a Cyberjammies – the most perfect, soft, wearable sets of PJs that feel like silk on the skin without the horror of creasing. The brand offers perfect looks for lounging and sleeping – I never want to take them off. The company have a range of sets that can be styled up or down depending on how glamorous you feel that evening, but will always offer a luxurious feel on your skin whilst you sleep.

MilliOnAir | MOTORING TEST DRIVE

An ex-CEO of Aston Martin once said

“We don’t make cars we make dreams...” By Motoring Editor Peter Wilcock

W

ell although most people dream of owning one of their iconic models, the reality is the dream has been a nightmare financially for the brand over the last few decades. The IPO in 2018 set out to rebuild the company’s future and a key element in that plan was the launch of the car sat gleaming in front of me on a sunny day in Aston’s spiritual home Newport Pagnell - the DBX. This is Aston Martin’s first-ever entry into the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market, and on the surface it seems at odds with a brand synonymous with sleek, two seater sports cars. But the logic is sound, SUV’s are already 45% of car sales in the US and over a third in Europe, the luxury brand guys Bentley, Porsche , Lamborghini and even Rolls Royce with their Cullinan have seen the writing on the wall and rushed to join

the party.

MilliOnAir magazine

Easier on the eye than either the Bentley or the Rolls, classier than the Porsche, the DBX stands out from the crowd on its 22” black gloss wheels and manages to look sleek and stylish despite its size. And somehow it looks like an Aston Martin, the iconic badge on the bonnet helps of course, but the design team have managed to make the DBX look like the bigger brother of the Aston siblings not the distant cousin. Those choosing to add the DBX to their V12 Vantage will be comforted they share the same DNA not just a badge. From every angle the car looks good, the front is aggressive yet subtle, the side view shows off the rakish looks and the rear end with its raised stance and deep diffuser will create admiring looks from those sitting behind the DBX in traffic. But it won’t be in sight for long once the lights change, the DBX is a beast, it may be spacious enough to carry 5 people in leather ensconced comfort to their golfing day out, but rest assured the growl of the engine will leave them in no doubt this is a wolf in wolf’s clothing. Performance is breathtaking for a car weighing over two tonnes. The 4litre twin-turbo V8 (adapted from the Mercedes-AMG

E63 S) produces 550bhp and catapults the DBX from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, hitting 100mph in 9.9. Top speed is 181 mph, yes 181mph ! Climb in and the interior is spacious as one would expect, but there’s an immediate feeling of being part of the car, press the starter button on the dash, the V8 rumbles into life and it just feels right. Look to the side and behind and you’re met with space, yet look ahead and the sleek bonnet lines give a sense of sportiness , this is indeed a sports car in disguise. I’m not crazy about the gear selector buttons on the dash, however they do free up space on the transmission tunnel for the controller of the Mercedes-based, Aston-faced and east to use infotainment system. But overall the interior is as pleasing as the exterior, carbon fibre trim, hand crafted sumptuous leather seats which hug and hold as the car eats up the miles. A full-length panoramic glass roof lets light flood in with a luxurious Alcantara roller-blind. The AM logo’d sports steering wheel with paddle shift functionality adds to the sense this is a sports car, this is like a UFC fighter in a suit, he may look smart but he give him an excuse to fight and he’ll be there.

MilliOnAir magazine

I set off tentatively, this is a new car with a price tag of £180,000 and an insurance excess of £10,000 should anything untoward happen on our test drive. But the cautiousness didn’t last long, the DBX is so ready to be unleashed and gives an instant responsiveness to the drivers every whim, any reticence about opening up the 500 bhp disappears as the car and I soon become the best of friends. However, the DBX also glides along with ease if you choose to prefer the beauty to the beast, the sound deadening and luxurious interior could fool you into believing you’re in a limousine at times. This feat is down to the genius of the AM engineers who have removed the problem most SUV’s can’t ignore - the laws of physics as their bulk makes them shake, roll and sometimes feel if pushed too hard they would topple over on a tight bend.

''Our first SUV, DBX, is a new kind of Aston Martin, one founded on the principles of beauty, luxury and driving dynamics. Ready to go anywhere, it’s powered by the spirit of adventure.''

MilliOnAir magazine

''Aston Martins are about authenticity. Made with passion and love.'' Marek Reichman Executive VP & Chief Creative Officer

The DBX has none of it, throw it around as much as you like and it tightens up, sinking into the tarmac as the V8 asks you to give it more of your right foot. After an hour on the A and B roads around the showroom I was at home in the DBX, the plush surroundings making me feel special whilst the V8 and my constant efforts with the paddle shift gears brought a huge smile on my face. The Lamborghini Urius might push it close but the DBX is the jewel in the crown of SUV’s right now. And it had better be. The Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll is the latest person to throw a life belt to Aston Martin, recently raising £500m to secure its future. The DBX is a huge part of making that bet pay off and from where I was sat on a sunny day in Newport Pagnell, the future of this most iconic of British brands is looking mighty rosy.

JAPANESE WITH A TWIST ...

TAKA

109 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 4RX At a time when restaurant closures are sadly becoming increasingly the norm, it’s a particular cause for celebration when a new eaterie launches. Stylish Japanese establishment TAKA is one of just a handful of new restaurant openings in central London this autumn – and it’s certainly a stand-out. This is Japanese cuisine like you’ve never tasted it before: a series of delicious small plates featuring the finest British produce through an entirely Japanese execution. Helming the operation are group executive chef Taiji Maruyama (ex-Nobu) and head chef Jonathan Dowling, who have combined their experiences of the Japanese philosophies of ‘Shun’ and ‘Chisan Chisho’, to create a new and innovative menu based on seasonality and locally-sourced food. There’s 100-day reared chicken from Botterill Farm in Lincolnshire; vegetables sourced sustainably from Nama Yasai, a small organic farm specialising in Japanese produce; Loch Duart salmon, responsibly farmed in Sutherland, Scotland, and freshly caught fish from Kernow Sashimi in Cornwall, which uses the Japanese method of ike jime to enhance the quality. Dishes to be shared include a Yakitori Omakase, comprised of a whole grilled chicken broken down into its different components for a complete “nose to tail” eating experience; Spanish tapas-inspired Kani croquettes, consisting of fresh Cornish crab, and decadent fried chicken wings stuffed with truffle and King Edward potatoes. Sushi offerings include similarly quirky adaptations of popular dishes, such as Kagoshima A5 Wagyu sukiyaki with onsen eggs and popcorn shrimp with Daikon salad. There are also more traditional favourites such as Miso black cod and popcorn tempura. Order the house-made mochi flat breads for wiping your small plates clean!

FORTIFYING WINE...

28-50 WINE WORKSHOP & KITCHEN 15-17 Marylebone Lane, London W1U 2NE

This must rate as one of the coolest and most extensive wine bars in London. And to tempt you in from the neighbouring Oxford Street shops, it’s just launched its new autumn menu, created by executive chef Julien Baris and guaranteed to fortify you against the cold. In fact, if you pop in for lunch, you might not leave until supper time, so welcoming are the staff! We opted for the excellently-priced £21 three-course lunch menu, starting with either warming Jerusalem artichoke soup, roasted beetroots or salmon ceviche and followed by a choice of black olive polenta, cod with leek fondue and corn-fed chicken breast with barley, squash and onion soubise and jus. For dessert, we couldn’t resist the chocolate orange mousse. Of course, given that this is foremost a wine bar with more than 30 different wines to choose from, you can expect to be treated to a hand-picked selection – either by glass or bottle - to ensure the perfect pairing with your dishes.

FUSING FASHION WITH FOOD... B COLLECTIONS 220 Westbourne Grove, London W11 2RH Destination boutique B Collections prides itself on its ability to change and evolve, which was never more in evidence than during lockdown when it pivoted to becoming an upmarket food hall. Italian owner Barbara Maselli temporarily stored her designer fashion stock upstairs and started selling the kind of artisanal food and wine she enjoyed while growing up in Sardinia. Her pop-up Italian delicatessen proved so successful she’s continued to serve homemade dishes, including lasagne, chicken Milanese and tiramisu, using recipes inherited from her restauranteur parents. “It’s like eating in your mama’s place on Sunday,” says Barbara of her in-house café Mama Mia, which shares the 200sq meter space in the heart of Notting Hill’s fashion district with a revolving range of independent and emerging designer brands, such as Alice Archer, BB Robinson and Barbara’s own label Martina London. “The beauty is that now people can buy really special things they can’t find in other Italian delis and you can also enjoy proper food while you’re shopping.”

ART HUB...

CROMWELL PLACE 4 Cromwell Place, SW7 2JE Located in five beautifully restored Grade II Listed townhouses in South Kensington, newly-launched Cromwell Place is a veritable arts cornucopia – a first of its kind global arts destination and membership organisation. Created as a solution to the changing demands of the art market, the dazzling £20million development comprises 14 gallery spaces, on-site storage, offices and meeting rooms and a club house, due to open in early 2021 in partnership with Michelin-starred chef Ollie Dabbous. Pioneering a new way to view art, the exhibition spaces feature rotating shows from some of the world’s most exciting galleries, institutions and dealers, with specialities ranging from Antiquities and Old Masters through to the 19th Century, modern and contemporary art. There’s also the modern Pavilion Gallery for larger exhibitions, which sits neatly behind the row of inter-connected townhouses. If you’re lucky, you might even catch one of the artist’s at work, such as renowned British artist Billy Childish, who was in residency at Lehmann Maupin’s first show.

WE’VE GOT THE BUG... SMALL GIANTS As we move steadily away from meat consumption, it appears that more of us are willing to eat insects as an alternative protein source - with the market for bugbased food products expected to grow rapidly in the next few years. Enter Small Giants, the super sustainable and mega tasty insect-based snacks brand, which has just launched in the UK and is set to disrupt the healthy snacks market. Taking the yuck-factor out of eating insects, these bite-sized savoury crackers are made with cricket flour, which delivers an umami taste, a protein punch and a Vitamin B12 boost. Who knew?! Made from 100% natural ingredients, the cricket crackers are available in three flavours: Tumeric & Smoked Paprika, Rosemary & Thyme and Tomato & Oregano. I can testify that they are seriously moreish, delivering on flavour and giving good crunch. Says co-founder Francesco Maino: “As attitudes towards edible insects are changing, we want to bring excitement, innovation and new consumers to the savoury snacks market. We’ve created a planet-positive insect-enriched snack that tastes great and offers a genuine alternative to those wanting to cut their consumption of animal-based foods and find an alternative source of protein.” Eating cheese and biscuits will never be the same again! www.eatsmallgiants.com

ANTY GIN... As one of the most popular spirits du jour, gin comes in multiple flavours – and now there’s the world’s first gin to be made from insects. Luxury spirits brand Cambridge Distillery has created the aptly named Anty Gin, containing the essence of more than 60 red wood ants – yes, that’s right! - along with hand-foraged botanicals, including juniper, wild wood avens and nettle. For the uninitiated, these complement the sharp citrus notes created by distilling the ants. It certainly slips down easily and I found the taste to be particularly smooth and floral. Every bottle, made in partnership with Nordic Food Lab, comes with a small dropper bottle of pure ant distillate so you can sample the unique flavour of the Formica rufa (or red wood ant) on its own.

There’s no wanting to hide these cans at a party or gig – they’re stylish, slim-line and recyclable. The range includes a Classic Mimosa, Blood Orange Mimosa and Beach Bellini – all made with real fruit, natural flavours and mixed with organic Spanish bubbly wine, which is also available on its own. Since launching at the beginning of this year, Sipful has gone from strength to strength (sales of cocktails and wine unsurprisingly soared during lockdown) and is now offering a monthly cocktail subscription service, so you can take a cheeky sip whenever you fancy, all year round!

CHRISTMAS WISH LIST... PEEP CLUB EYE WAND Just when I’d given up trying to get rid of the permanent pillows under my eyes, along comes a magic wand designed to banish bags and revive dry, tired eyes. Did you know the average Brit spends almost four hours looking at screens on average every day? That’s a scary 50 days a year. This gamechanger home-kit is the business, and comprises re-chargeable eye wand, organic coconut eye balm and silky soft reusable velvet bamboo pads. Simply heat the wand (it heats up to 45oC in under 60 seconds) while you apply the balm - containing the antioxidant Cureberry, which protects against blue light emitted from screens - around your eyes. Then gently massage the area with the vibrating, heated wand, which encourages circulation and lymphatic drainage to de-puff both under and upper eyelids. It also unblocks the eye’s tiny glands to help you produce better quality tears and stay hydrated, while the red-light LED therapy promotes

the production of collagen and elastin to smooth the entire eye area. The brainchild of two friends, award-winning optometrist Nicola Alexander-Cross and brand strategist Natasha Sales, Peep Club is committed to making modern, tech-led sustainable eye care solutions. imon believes that precaution is better than cure. For an injuryfree holiday in the snow, it is recommended to strengthen the leg muscles and improve cardiovascular fitness before the vacation. Try exercises that focus on the quadriceps, such as regular lunges and skipping, the chair position against the wall, or bicycle and stair climbing. Strong quads keep your legs from getting weak and wobbly, which in turn helps you stay in control on the slopes and reduces the risk of torn muscles and ligaments. Attentive skiers with strong leg muscles have fewer accidents, whilst fatigue on the slopes increases the chances of crashes.

Simon: "The most common cause of injuries I see in my practice, is an incorrect setting of the bindings for the skier's height, weight and abilities. If the bindings do not loosen properly during a fall, there is a great risk of injury. Therefore, it is imperative to find a qualified binding specialist. In my experience, bindings are often set too high by the local ski shops. The less experienced a skier, the looser the bindings have to be for the skis to come off in the event of a fall. After the adjustments are made, it is important to check whether the ski boots come off completely in outside temperatures too."

he second most common cause of injuries, and the worst, according to Simon's experience, are collisions, typically between skiers and snowboarders with different falling lines. Simon continuously advises staying aware of surroundings and other skiers and snowboarders to minimize the risk of a crash. n obvious statement is to ski within the limits of your own abilities. Recommended is to only ski the slopes for which one has enough experience. Many of the runs are condition-based; some runs are manageable with good visibility and snow surface but can be dangerous in whiteout and ice. Sensible action is required; namely, the choice of suitable runs in the weather conditions for one's capability. In stormy conditions, there is often a temptation to still go on the slopes to make the most of the vacation, resulting in many holidayers skiing on dangerous slopes with poor visibility. Vigilance is required. Among other things, Simon warns not to ski if you feel unwell or are hungover. WHY is positivity as opposed to negativity important to you. Positivity to me means progress & living with a growth mindset. It means being able to look at life’s challenges and roadblocks with vigor. Our self-talk and the way we view our lives is crucial to any form of growth; be it personal or professional. With a negative mindset I wouldn’t have been able to achieve anything in my life. Being able to say to myself “ok, this might be crazy & this may really put me to the test, but I know I can do it”, has fundamentally been what has propelled me forward. Imagine if I said “no way I can do this” or “I know this won’t work out”, I never would’ve even tried and my life would be very different than it is today. The one thing people need to understand with positivity is that it doesn’t mean things don’t affect you & that everything is going to work out. It’s a frame of mind that gets you through life’s challenging times. That’s when true positivity shines. Anyone can be positive when things are going great, but it takes a special kind of growth mindset to face life’s challenges and still find ways to come out on top.

WHAT is your earliest memory of an act of positivity. When I was a little kid, probably like 6 or 7, I remember a moment of positivity from my Mom that I believe truly shaped the human that I am today. One night for whatever reason I was in my room sad and crying. My mom heard me from the hall and came in to my room to see what was the matter. When she saw me crying, she said “be sure to make a wish for every tear that falls from your eyes so that when you grow up life will give you more reasons to smile.” Reframing that sadness by creating something to be happy about has stayed with me my whole life, and really how I try to look at all life’s situations.

WHO has had the most positive influence on your life and why. I’m grateful to say there are a few too many to mention. Another reason why a positive mindset is so important. It attracts the same type of people towards you. Of course I’ve encountered tons of negative people, but I’ve conditioned myself to just pivot away

from that type of energy & recessive mindsets. It’s up to us to decide what type of energy we gravitate towards. Negative people love pulling things down, while positive people evoke progressive ideas and focus on lifting people up. For the ones reading this and feel like there’s no positivity or growth mindsets around, sometimes at first you have to be that person for yourself for a while. Listen to speakers online that resonate with your values and models some of their habits. Seek out mentors. Where attention goes energy flows and in time, you’ll find you’re meeting more people that align with your same type of personal and professional values.

WHAT is the most positive piece of advice you pass on to people you meet. Find the courage to follow your dreams and the resiliency in your heart to never look back.

HOW do you deal with negative people. Most negative people don’t choose to be that way, so I try my best to face anyone with empathy. Perhaps they’re acting that way because of the people they let surround them. Maybe they’ve been burnt one too many times or have experienced some trauma that took hold of their lives. I don’t believe that most people want to be negative, they’ve just let the world around them condition their mindset over time. Like I said before, positivity isn’t always an you need to work on it over time. It’s a choice, just like negativity. It’s up to us to decide which one we want to nurture.

WHAT'S the most positive piece of advice you have been give: When/Where/Whom. It’s hard to pinpoint one person or moment really. I’ve always been one to seek out knowledge, and have gotten some great advice from my mentors along my journey. I read a lot though and am a big quotes person, so here are a few of the ones I could say that have fundamentally shaped my life:

“Most people don’t fail in life because the aim to high and miss, but because they aim too low and hit.” – Les Brown “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them.” – George Bernard Shaw “All dream: but not equally. Those who dream in the dark recesses of the night awake in the day to find all was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, and make it possible.” – T.E Lawrence WHAT is your inspirational catchphrase. Timeline is irrelevant when success is inevitable.

WHERE in the world are you in your most positive state. Positivity for me isn’t a place, it’s a state of mind. I believe life is all about how you look at things and that is something always within our control. For example, you could easily look at rose bush and say “Such a shame that these roses have all these thorns growing out of them” or you could reframe your perspective and say “It’s awesome that from this thorn bush these beautiful roses grow.” Ultimately, how we see or feel about things is always up to us. I truly believe that.

IF you could be known for one positive achievement in your life what would it be. That I gave more to the industry than I took.
