bestselling books, Shaun Considine. The author of “Mad as Hell: The Life and Work of Paddy Chayefsky” avers: “Paddy fell madly in love with Kim and went so far as to ask his wife for a divorce. His wife, Susan, told him not to be silly, that he was enamored by a movie star and that the infatuation would be over when the movie was finished.” And yes, this was so. But the writer and the actress remained close friends until the day he died. Mr. Considine also avers that

“WHEN YOU work with a secure director -- people like Alfred Hitchcock or Otto Preminger or Richard Quine -they want you to be good. They want it for the good of the film. Insecure directors, perhaps because they are insecure, are not so helpful.” That was Kim Novak talking about her life as a film star. Space prevented me from using everything she said in our story last week on the enduring movie queen. (She is promoting a deluxe new Kim Novak DVD set.) I was startled to hear that Kim got on with the notoriously difficult Otto Preminger, and she insisted Alfred Hitchcock, who often drove his actors insane with his apparent lack of interest, was “wonderful.” DURING OUR chat, Kim mentioned what a “good friend” the writer Paddy Chayefsky had been. He wrote the play “Middle of the Night” and the screenplay for the movie version in which Kim starred, along with Fredric March. She said she and Paddy had plans to do a Broadway play together. She admitted, with considerable feeling, “I miss him very much.” Now comes a P.S. from our great movie historian and author of numerous

Paddy was a good friend of Elizabeth Taylor’s. Such good friends that Taylor wanted him to write the screenplay for “Cleopatra.” She begged producer Walter Wanger to hire Paddy, but the studio preferred Joe Mankiewicz, who had worked successfully with Taylor on “Suddenly, Last Summer.” They felt Mank “knew” Taylor, and could write for her, accordingly. It would be interesting to speculate on how the earthbound Paddy, who also “knew” her, would have written an epic of antiquity. (“Marty” goes to Egypt?) MARC CHERRY, the creator of “Desperate Housewives” is reportedly mulling a “reality-type show-within-ashow” concept that will reveal “aspects of the housewives we’ve never seen before.”

No, it won’t be backstage with the stars, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria, but a more improvisational venture, shot on video, to give it a “reality TV look.” The actresses will still be in character, but voicing their own feelings about the characters. Very interesting! INFANTICIPATING! As Walter Winchell used to declare. Long-distance runner Kara Goucher, whose glamour has led to the tag, “the Julia Roberts of running” is expecting her first child, a boy, next month. (She is really infanticipating!) Kara -- who has graced the cover of Runner’s World magazine three times in two years -and her hubby Adam are thrilled. She still hopes to run (and win!) the marathon in the 2012 Olympics.
