Father Robert R. Cannon, Ch, Col, USAF, Named Chancellor On March 11, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio announced the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), will soon have a new Chancellor. Father Robert R. Cannon, Ch, Col, USAF, a priest of the Diocese of Venice, Fla., and currently the Wing Chaplain at Travis Air Force Base (AFB), Calif., assumes the position Oct. 1. He replaces Deacon Michael Yakir, who is retiring after seven years as Chancellor following a long career in business. As Chancellor, Father Cannon will serve as the primary archdiocesan contact for Catholic U.S. Military chaplains based worldwide. His responsibilities will include receiving chaplains’ quarterly reports, finding new chaplains from the ranks of ordained Catholic priests, and processing endorsement and faculties for those entering military service for the first time. Discernment Retreat Draws 34 to Consider Vocations as Chaplains Thirty-four (34) young men gathered in Menlo Park, Calif., the weekend of March 3-6 for a discernment retreat aimed at helping them determine if they are called by the Holy Spirit to be Catholic priests and military chaplains. They included more than two dozen servicemen from every service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Sacred Oils for Use in the Coming Year Blessed at Annual Chrism Mass On Saturday, March 12, Archbishop Broglio blessed sacred oils for sacramental use over the coming year on U.S. Military sites and in the nation’s VA Medical Centers. The annual Chrism Mass took place in Washington, D.C., at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. During the Mass, priests in service to the Archdiocese also renewed their ministerial commitment. Archbishop Broglio observed that the Chrism is "scented to remind us of the charge to permeate our world with the fragrance of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.” Read full story. California Groups Host Archbishop Broglio at March Events Archbishop Broglio was the guest speaker at six March events hosted in California by California Legatus Chapters and Catholic Professional & Business Clubs. The title of Archbishop Broglio's talk was, “Serving our Military - The Vital Role of Military Chaplains in Today's Challenging Culture." Catholic News Service Posts Video on Record Fast-Marching Army Chaplain On March 22, Catholic News Service (CNS) published a video on Father Luke Willenberg, CH (CPT), USA, who, last month, set a new record for the fastest 12-mile foot march at the U.S. Army’s elite DeGlopper Air Assault School, Fort Bragg, N.C.. Father Luke Willenberg, who completed the trek toting a 35-lb. rucksack in one hour and forty-two minutes, told CNS: "It's not me in the end. I think God blessed me with good health and certain abilities. Therefore, to Him be the glory. But if these soldiers are inspired by it, that's wonderful!" Watch video.
