April 18-22 Discernment Retreat Scheduled for Priests Contemplating Military Chaplaincy Priests interested in serving as U.S. Military chaplains are encouraged to apply for an all-expenses-paid retreat to discern the "vocation within a vocation." “For God and Country: a Call to Serve Those Who Serve” will be held April 18-22, 2016, in Washington, D.C. To qualify, priests need 2 years experience in parish ministry plus U.S. citizenship or a Green Card. Preference will go to those who can enter active duty before their 42nd birthday. Bishop Barron’s New Study Program Shipped to Catholic Military Communities Worldwide Catholic priests serving at U.S. Military installations around the world, aboard U.S. Navy warships, and in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers, recently received complimentary copies of Bishop Robert Barron’s new faith study program, The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters. The program kits, each consisting of a six-lesson DVD, a Leader's Guide, and a "Pocket Guide to Answering Atheists," are intended to support small group faith study in military settings. Military Catholics Brave Blizzard Warning to March for Life on Anniversary of Roe v. Wade In spite of oncoming Winter Storm Jonas on Jan. 22, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio led dozens of AMS members through falling snow and biting cold along Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Avenue in the annual March for Life. The AMS marchers in the anti-abortion demonstration, held each year on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade (1973), included young adult Catholics from various military installations and 16 cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Read full story.
Catholic U.S. Army Chaplain Last to Celebrate Mass on Ancient Monastery Altar Razed by ISIS During his 2009-2010 deployment to Iraq, Father Jeffrey Whorton, CH (MAJ), USA, celebrated Mass for U.S. troops in the war-torn country’s oldest Christian monastery, St. Elijah’s, built in the late 6th Century. This month, the Associated Press (AP) reported that satellite images confirm the 2014 destruction of St. Elijah’s at the hands of ISIS. As it turns out, Father Whorton, who serves on active duty with AMS endorsement and faculties, was the last priest ever to preside at the liturgy on the ancient altar. Read full story.
