Annual Memorial Mass for Father Capodanno Set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 The annual Memorial Mass for Father Vincent R. Capodanno, MM, Servant of God, will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m. (ET) in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue Northeast, Washington, D.C. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. The Mass is open to the public. Military members are encouraged to wear the uniform of the day, and business attire is appropriate for civilians.There will be open seating, so attendees are advised to plan for early arrival. Back-to-School Season Brings Out 14 New Military Chaplain Candidates With the U.S. Military facing a Catholic chaplain shortage, help is on the way. Nine young men entering the seminary this fall hope to become chaplains after ordination. Another five seminarians in various advanced stages of formation have also made a commitment to become military chaplains. That brings to 14 the total number of Catholic men embarking this year on the vocational journey toward military chaplaincy, raising to 36 the total number of chaplain candidates now enrolled in the CoSponsored Seminarian Program. Auxiliary Bishop Spencer Joins Walk for Peace in Poland In mid-August, Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer joined military pilgrims from the U.S. and five other nations on a “Walk for Peace” in Poland. The walk was part of Poland’s annual pilgrimage to the revered Black Madonna, preserved at the historic shrine to Our Lady of Częstochowa, Poland’s holiest site. The pilgrims arrived on Monday, Aug. 15—the Solemnity of the Assumption and Poland’s Armed Forces Day, commemorating Poland’s victory over the Soviets at the 1920 Battle of Warsaw. Read full story.

The first collection was taken in 2013 and the 2016 National Collection will be taken in most dioceses and archdioceses at Masses the weekend of November 5-6. Chaplains Make Video Inspiring Young Men to Consider Priestly Vocations in the Military On Wednesday, Aug. 24, more than a dozen Catholic U.S. Military chaplains, representing all three branches of the armed forces, gathered at the Edwin Cardinal O'Brien Pastoral Center in Washington, D.C., to make a video aimed at inspiring more young men to consider vocations as priest-chaplains. Chaplains taking part in the production included Fathers John Barkemeyer, Mark Bristol, Chris Christensen, Christopher Doering, Curtiss Dwyer, Francis Foley, Daniel Goulet, Jim Hinkle, Joseph Hoang, Patrick McPartland, Daniel Mode, and Lawrence Smith, S.J.
