Chaplain Spotlight

U.S. Army Chaplain Decorated for "Selfless Service" in Iraq Father Ramelo B. Somera, CH (CPT), USA, of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, recently earned the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his exceptional "selfless service" in Iraq during his deployment from August 2015 to March 2016. As the only Catholic chaplain in Iraq for the vast majority of that time, Father Somera and his assistant traveled the war-torn countryside, "stranded at the airport" and sleeping in "leaky transit tents," to bring the sacraments to Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen and coalition fighters at multiple forward operating bases (FOBs) and those based in Baghdad, including the U.S. Embassy.
