Research and Consultancy

IHS Fairplay’s research and consultancy team provides a range of maritime consultancy services that can be tailored to meet your exact requirements.

Market analyses and forecasts covering a range of sectors and subjects, such as shipbuilding, shipping, trade and port developments, are available through bespoke consultancy and regular subscriber services. The experienced team, based in Sweden, regularly undertakes research in key areas of maritime policy on behalf of the European Commission, and is well placed to consider the strategic challenges and opportunities faced by shipping companies. Specific projects include research into the impact of shipping on air pollution and the development of an emissions model, and benchmarking strategic options for European shipping and for the European maritime transport system in the horizon 2008-2018. Emissions Model IHS Fairplay research team has developed a model for analysing exhaust emissions using AIS data on ship movements and engine emission output data.

2

The model provides a base for reporting and analysing all shipping activities within a specific region where traffic structure, intensity and emissions are reported. This gives ports the opportunity to review their fee structuring system taking into account speed to port and emissions output. It also presents ship operators and local authorities with an opening to promote their support of the environment, by determining the impact exhaust emissions have on the environment and taking a proactive approach. European Shipping 2008-2018 In 2007, the Commission’s Directorate General for Energy and Transport tasked a consortium of consultants, led by IHS Fairplay research (formerly Lloyd’s Register - Fairplay) to provide an analytical basis for examining strategic options for European shipping and for the European maritime transport system. The resulting report, which considers geographical distribution and evolving patterns of seaborne trade, focuses on trends and plausible shipping scenarios in the horizon 2008-2018.

Handbooks Docking Handbook This comprehensive manual is an ideal tool from which to prepare for a ship’s docking and to monitor the performance of the work. • New and improved checklists • Extensive details of repairs carried out in China (steel, delays, workforce, time, contract and payment) • Advice on how to avoid unnecessary expense • Up-to-date database of repairers and marine equipment suppliers With over 470 pages of standard forms and checklists, the handbook provides all of the documentation needed for planning, pre-arrival, during and after docking to improve efficiency and control. All the documents and checklists contained within the publication can be downloaded from the CD-ROM onto your PC, enabling you to complete and send them electronically and archive them for future reference. The CD-ROM also contains a fully searchable database of ship repairers and marine equipment companies worldwide, simplifying the task of finding suitable suppliers.

Pollution Prevention Handbook The purpose of this handbook is to provide vessel operators and ship crew with operational guidelines for pollution prevention. Studies sponsored by the Department of Transport some years ago identified that only 40% of the oily water separators installed on ships worked within the limits set out by the marine pollution convention. This handbook provides a framework for reasonable solutions, covering systems, procedures and regulations, and describes the fundamentals of pollution prevention measures in simple language and with many practical checklists. Technical departments will be able to use the handbook to highlight deficiencies where improvements can be made, and to ensure that they comply with MARPOL regulations and avoid costly fines and ship detentions. All of the documents and checklists contained within the book can be downloaded from the accompanying CD-ROM. Book and CD-ROM package Published April 2006

Book and CD-ROM package 2009 Edition – Published October 2008

Superintendent’s Handbook This publication provides marine superintendents with guidelines for carrying out day-to-day business both in the office and when visiting a vessel. With over 410 pages the publication focuses on best practice rather than theory. Both experienced superintendents and those new to the role will benefit from this comprehensive reference. Keeping vessels trading on time and within budget, while ensuring compliance with ever increasing regulations, is the role of the superintendent. This publication will assist in virtually every aspect of that task. All of the documents and checklist contained within the publication can be downloaded from the CD-ROM onto your PC. Similar to the Docking Handbook the CD-ROM also contains a fully searchable database of ship repairers and marine equipment suppliers worldwide, simplifying the task of finding suitable suppliers. Ship Repair and Maintenance Handbook Shipboard maintenance is still an area of weakness for many companies, with repair costs featuring heavily on budgets. There is no point in creating an expensive, computer-based maintenance system if onboard equipment/machinery is poorly maintained. Ships staff must always observe manufacturers’ instructions for maintenance. The Ship Repair and Maintenance Handbook aims to assist technical and safety staff by providing practical advice about onboard maintenance, enabling them to interpret any changes in equipment performance and avoid expensive breakdowns or marine casualties. This handbook looks at the practical side of repair and maintenance, rather than reliance on computer-based instruction, to assist onboard and shore-based personnel in minimising problems and expensive repairs. It also emphasises the importance of investment in education, spare parts and regular inspection by superintendents. Book and CD-ROM package Published January 2005

Handbooks Safety and Environmental Handbook The introduction of the ISM code highlighted the need to improve awareness and understanding of safety and environmental issues. Due to reduced manning levels, standards of training and communication problems between crew members from various countries, onboard safety is generally an area where improvements can be made. The Safety and Environmental Handbook will help officers and crew to quickly increase their knowledge of systems, procedures and regulations relating to safety and environmental issues. The handbook describes the fundamentals of basic safety requirements and environmental subjects in simple language and includes many practical checklists. One of the sections includes the development and conception of a ship-specific ISPS manual, including a working example. Security officers will be able to refer to the handbook for help when drawing up their own manual, as required by the ISPS Code. Book and CD-ROM package Published March 2004

Port Security Handbook The International Ship and Port facility Security (ISPS) Code – Port Security Handbook written by Lloyd’s Register in its role as a Recognised Security Organisation, explains the intricacies of this new and important piece of international maritime legislation. With over 200 pages of interesting text, full colour photographs, diagrams, flow charts and checklists, the handbook provides the most comprehensive guide to the ISPS Code. The handbook describes the roles and responsibilities of the Port Facility Security Officer and describes the practical steps needed to ensure the most rapid and efficient compliance with code requirements. This comprehensive handbook is a must for all designated Port Facility Security Officers, Port Operators and Managers, Shippers, Subcontractors, Transport and Security professionals in the ports industry. Packed with a wealth of detail, this invaluable reference work will prove to be an essential working guide to meeting the ongoing challenge of implementing and maintaining port security.

Book Published February 2004

Classification and Statutory Surveys Handbook The Classification and Statutory Surveys Handbook written by the Classification experts of Lloyd’s Register, explains the how and why of Classification. It reveals in an easy-to-read and absorbing style the details behind the Classification process and explains the role of the modern Classification Society in certifying compliance with statutory legislation. With over 200 pages of interesting text, photographs, diagrams, flow charts and checklists, the handbook provides the most comprehensive guide to surveys available. It also describes the links and differences between Class, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM and ISPS in an easy-to-read format. This comprehensive handbook is a must for any professional in the marine industry. Superintendents, shipbuilders, ship owners, ship’s officers, ship repairers, surveyors, lawyers, financiers, insurers and students will all benefit from the wealth of detail in this invaluable reference work.
