Foreword Jazz musicians have always gathered. That’s how the DNA of the music is passed on from generation to generation. For all the wonders of 21st century technology, and all the trappings of formal education, as jazz musicians we are, first and foremost, part of an oral history, an unbroken chain of wisdom (and wit) that stretches back into the mists of music history - to the streets of New Orleans and the dance clubs of Chicago, to the late night jam sessions of Harlem and the quayside bars of Havana and Rio, to the lofts of downtown Manhattan and underground outposts in Berlin, Paris and Dublin. The chinese whispers of jazz go all the way back to the founders of the music, so when we meet and play with other musicians, when we learn an old tune with new friends, when some elder statesman shows us a new trick, we are connecting with that continuum in a way that, for the most part, classical musicians and rock musicians cannot. Styles may come and go, sounds may change, and we may have moved far away from anything that might be recognisable to Lester Young or Charlie Parker as jazz, but we are, nonetheless, inheritors of the same living tradition. When we sit in a class with a great teacher, when we get up and jam with musicians we have never met before, even when we are just giving our energy to performers as members of an audience, we are connecting with a way of making music that is alive and growing – to quote Gustav Mahler, tradition is not the worship of ashes, it’s the preservation of a flame. Eddie Lee and his fantastic team breathe on that flame every year, and it’s a real privilege for us all - musicians and listeners, students and teachers, old hands and beginners - to bask in its light. Cormac Larkin Musician and Writer, The Irish Times

FUSIoN oF FLAVoUrS oN A JAZZ PLANeT

Sligo Jazz Project (SJP) summer school has firmly established itself as Europe’s biggest and best jazz education event. This year we have a huge faculty of twenty-three international musicians giving workshops each day in IT Sligo and performing in concert and jam sessions. You’d never know who might turn up at sessions at Hargadons, Tricky’s, various Sligo cafés or our festival hub, the Riverside Hotel, during the week. This year’s theme is Fusion, highlighting the plethora of musical styles that make up the jazz planet. Our Artist-in-Residence, UK saxophonist/rapper Soweto Kinch’s swaggering Bebop/Freestyle Rap/Hip-Hop mix and LA-based Aussie drummer Virgil Donati’s jazz-metal fusion add a lot of spice to the more conventional jazz flavours you’ll sample this week. Fabulous female jazz performers abound, with vocal jazz from Liane Carroll, Sara Colman and Emilia Martensson, who are joined for the first time in Sligo by trombonist Shannon Barnett and saxophonist Meilana Gillard. As always with SJP, there are many firsts! So, for the first time, we team up with the Yeats Summer School and the Hawk’s Well Theatre in co-presenting a night of Yeats-inspired jazz, featuring vocalist Christine Tobin’s Sailing to Byzantium. We’ll have the SJP All Stars on Friday this year and two action-packed shows of Kieran Quinn’s Themed Night Shows (Theme number 18). What’s not to like? Eddie Lee Artistic Director, Sligo Jazz Project

Sligo Jazz Project, Hawk’s Well Theatre and the Yeats International Summer School join to present a celebration of W. B. Yeats in words and music from Christine Tobin, Irish singer-songwriter, composer and award winning jazz vocalist. Sailing To Byzantium is a collection beautiful settings of 12 poems by W.B Yeats. Christine won a 2012 British Composer Award for this work and the album received many 5 star reviews. She works with the poems on a deep intuitive level creating music that draws you into a world of unalloyed soulfulness, conjuring watercolour accompaniments on The Fisherman and a hypnotic, prayerlike refrain on Sailing To Byzantium. The broad palette of harmony and colour throughout draws on influences from folk, jazz and twentieth century classical, from Miles to Messiaen. “In this beautiful collection of songs based on the poetry of WB Yeats, vocalist Christine Tobin has created an unqualified masterpiece….(she) perfectly gauges the emotional and spiritual resonances of the texts, aided by performances of incredible subtlety and understatement.” Jazzwise **** Supported by Jeffers Pianos, in association with Galway Jazz Festival and Music Network
