NEWS ABOUT THE ENERGY TEAM OF LACLEDE STEEL AND SSC

ABOUT THE ENERGY TEAM Laclede Steel Company has joined forces with SSC Inc. to evaluate ways and means to reduce our energy costs at the Alton facility. I am sure we all have come to appreciate the tremendous amount of energy that is consumed to produce one ton of steel at our plant. Our gas, electric, water, oxygen and plant air costs make up more than 20% of our total product conversion costs. Obviously, the opportunity to reduce energy costs as part of our strategy to produce low cost steel products seems to be great. We have established a Steering Committee to help guide and direct this endeavor Task Teams will be formed and we hope substantial cost reduction ideas are implemented in the second half of 1995. As Laclede moves into the 21st century with improved technology and equipment to produce better steel, we must remain competitive. Our competitive position can be greatly improved if we can learn new and better ways to achieve energy cost savings. SSC will help us find the saving opportunities and will work with our people to help construct the procedures and tools that will allow us to maintain these savings for years to come. We welcome the opportunity to work with SSC and we sincerely believe our joint efforts will provide significant improvements to our facility here at Alton. Bill Hebenstreit Vice-President, Operations

MEET THE ENERGY TEAM BILL HEBENSTREIT, Laclede Steel, VicePresident Operations, with over 27 years in the industry, has held a number of positions in engineering and manufacturing. LARRY SCHNURBUSCH, Laclede Steel, Vice-President of Administration, has been with Laclede for 28 years. We are all hoping for cost reductions. This project will be successful to the extent that all of our people become aware of energy costs. That ’ s where SSC can help, giving us information so we can work more efficiently from an energy standpoint. We know the opportunity is there we need to grab it. ”
