MALI “BOO” This 1978 Chevy Malibu is one scary machine and is a perfect “Readers Ride” for the month of October and our Halloween Issue. Tony DeConte purchased this badass Chevy nearly 20 years in the city of Warwick, RI. Tony used to live in Glocester, RI. but has since moved to Connecticut.

Tony has been friends with me since we met and started hanging out together in our high school days in Burrillville, RI. We always purchased and owned muscle cars and hot rods over the years but this one is for keeps.

There is a power plant 408 Big Block under the hood, when the hood is actually on the car, and packs a punch with no doubt. I know, I’ve been a passenger in this ride many times over the past two decades.

The engine is pushing approximately 550 horsepower and is backed up with a Turbo 400 Transmission and 373 gears in the rear end. Tony regularly drag races this Chevy at drag ways across the region and runs high 10’s at 125-130 miles per hour in the quarter mile. He connects to the blacktop with Mickey Thompson Tires and Drag Star Wheels. The rear end is tubbed to fit the monster meats under the rear fender wells.

Tony has made plenty of upgrades over the years and this car wins a lot of trophies at classic auto shows and cruise nights across the region every season. Rear brake drums and front disc brakes help stop the beast on the roadway and drag ways. The dual exhaust is 3” diameter from headers back and the roar coming from under Tony’s Chevy is due to its dual Thrush Mufflers.

This Malibu is equipped with Simpson seat belts but don’t ask for a ride if he pulls into an area car show or cruise night and you see him driving and someone in the passenger seat. It has no backseat.

His last race was recently held at Lebanon Valley Dragway and he had one helluva day at the track.

If you see this beast Chevy Malibu at an area car show, cruise night or drag way do not hesitate to check it out. This classic car is awesome.

It’s also fast as hell!

Twisted is a perfect name for this brute Chevy.

At times it looked like the Corvette and the Camaro were car lengths ahead, but of course the Mustang and other Ford performance vehicles would also sit pretty on top of the mountain for certain lengths of time. Will there ever be a truly undisputed Champion? Probably not. But the true winners in this horsepower war are the enthusiasts who just keep scooping up one offering after another from both manufacturers, wondering where does it end? These days straight out of the showroom some performance vehicles are offering 600, 700, and now even 800 horsepower. Then to top it off, consumers are picking up already potent vehicles and modifying them to even greater lengths, resulting in some very impressive elapsed times from just a handful of changes and a decent tuner. Within the current drag racing scene it’s not uncommon to see low 10 second and even high 9 second cars from late model offerings, which is why Scott Erickson of Viking Motorsports decided to showcase these powerhouses in his fourth annual Ford vs Chevy Shootout.

Erickson made it simple with four classes that fit almost every type of combination imaginable. This turned out to be just the recipe he needed as response this year was the biggest car count the event had ever seen.

There were some very close battles but at the end of the day only the strong survived, with the following contenders standing proud representing their brands…

Viking Motorsports BOX- This was an all Chevy final with Bob Letellier and his 2014 Camaro taking the win over John Beaule’s 72 Vega.

Viking Motorsports NO BOX- After a breakout pass by New Generation Superstar Steven Knight, Keith Goettlich’s 37 Ford pickup strolled away with the victory in this 42 car class with some of the best competition from within the New England Dragway family.

Viking Motorsports STREET DEMON- In an epic heads up battle that carried 8| Motorhead Magazine - October 2017

over from Outlaw 10.50’s Super Street class, Gregg Boudreau and Rob Ingles battled it out with Ingles taking the win in his absolutely immaculate 69 Camaro.

Viking Motorsports TRACK DEMON- The final in Track Demon featured a Ford vs Chevy war between two of the biggest names in New England Drag Racing. Brian “Papa” Milward successfully defended his title against Joe Furtado’s nasty 70 Camaro. The rematch between these two is going to be the most anticipated match up next year.

Remembering John Martins

2nd Annual John Martins Classic Cars & Tow Truck Show JIM WEICHERDING What started out as a damp and dreary September Saturday morning in the state of Rhode Island quickly turned sunny and warm for the John Martins Foundation Tow Truck and Car Show Family Event hosted at McCoy Stadium.

Home of the Pawtucket Red Sox. What an awesome venue and event in honor of a wonderful man, John Martins.

John was tragically taken from us in a tow truck crash while working and this event is held annually to remember John to keep his memory alive.

This year’s event hosted displays of tow trucks that attended from all across the region. I even joined in a caravan of tow trucks heading to the event on the highway that same morning. There were also a lot of beautiful classic cars, trucks, muscle cars and hot rods on display throughout the day that helped attract a very large crowd of spectators to the event.

A waitress walks over to the table and offers Etch a menu. “Hi handsome, want a cup of coffee to start with before you order something to eat?” Etch holds his head up and looks past her body now blocking the view between the police officers and himself. “Sure, light no sugar.” Etch stares across the diner at the police officers while the waitress turns around to go get his cup of coffee. When she is no longer in the sight path between Etch and the police officers he puts his head back down and reaches for the local automotive magazine resting on the chair next to him at his table.

The waitress returns with his coffee and takes out her order pad. “What’s it gonna be?” asks the waitress. “Two eggs-scrambled hard, two sausage links, hash browns, wheat toast and a small glass of orange juice. Oh, and the apple cinnamon pancakes with maple syrup.” replies Etch. “You got it!” said the waitress. She turns and walks away from Etch now reading an article in the

local automotive magazine. Etch sees one of the police officers get up from his side of the window booth and start to walk towards the back of the diner where he is sitting. “Oh great,” Etch mumbles under his breath. The police officer walks right up to where Etch is sitting and stops in front of his table. “Excuse me,” said, the police officer, “Would you mind handing me that newspaper behind you on that empty chair?” Etch turns around and reaches for the newspaper. “This one?” asks, Etch.

“No, the newspaper next to that one,” replied, the police officer. Etch hands the police officer the newspaper and puts his head back down facing the automotive magazine article. The police officer begins to walk back to his table holding his newspaper in one hand and puts his other hand in his police revolver holster clip releasing the latch securing his gun. The police officer suddenly turns around dropping the newspaper and points his revolver at an empty chair. Etch has already

exited the diner through the back door. The police officer is joined by his partner as they run to the back door of the diner. They both attempt to exit the rear of the diner but are stopped suddenly by a door that won’t open. They both put their shoulders into pushes attempting to bust down the door but all they do is hurt their shoulders trying to open a secured door from the outside. Etch placed a fifty five gallon barrel of oil up against the back door he found leaning against a fence post outside the diner. The police stop trying to push the door open when they hear loud exhaust coming from the parking lot. “He’s getting away!” yells, one of the police officers.

ED YESSAIAN Just days before the Tasca Mustang Showdown at New England Dragway, the internet was buzzing with excitement over the recent NHRA licensing of 15 year old Bob Tasca VI. Not only was this an admirable accomplishment to begin with, but it marked a truly historic moment in the Tasca Racing

and was eventually supported by both his son Carl Tasca Senior, who still holds the world records for the quickest and fastest Cobra Jet and by his grandson NHRA Pro Bob Tasca III. On Saturday August 12th, it would be the son of Bob Tasca III who would issue the challenge to his father to run heads up, “Father versus Son in two showroom stock Mustangs”. Of course Bob the third would accept the challenge, but it would be Bob Tasca VI standing victorious, after dedicating this match to his great grandfather Bob Tasca Senior.

THE IRON MAN Brad McCormick’s V6 can hang with the big boys

By XANDER ANTHONY With today’s modern technology, even the six cylinder offerings available to us are now putting out the same power numbers as the V8 models from generations past, with respectable fuel economy to boot. But as Motorheads, we obviously can’t leave well enough alone and eventually, our thirst for more power consumes us and we just have to find new ways to make our cars faster and more nimble. With models like the Dodge Challenger, the aftermarket literally exploded when the nameplate returned with the retro Xander Anthony Yessaian design becoming an instant attraction to customizers and performance enthusiasts. And it was the customization of Brad McCormick’s 2010 Challenger that drew me to it at the Papa Gino’s Cruise Night in Tewksbury, Massachusetts and then again at the Anheuser Busch show in Merrimack, NH. The first thing you notice on Brad’s Challenger is the tasteful custom gold accents laid down by B&J Auto Body as well as the 392 front splitter and C440 spoiler. That was enough to spark my interest and get me strolling over to get the full scoop on this tricked out Mopar. Right of the bat what immediately jumped out at me was the Vortech Supercharger, neatly perched off the 3.5L V6 engine. But that’s not all. The engine was also nudged a bit more via an inertia cam and a few

many cruise nights and car shows as he can with the car, and this is no trailer queen. Having personally seen the car at multiple events, I can attest to the fact that Brad is out and about, making the most of the short New England car show season.

By TONY GALLONIO Since I was a young man, like so many in our hobby, we were always looking in magazines at different hot rods and muscle cars but I knew a long time ago that the only car for me was a 1932 Ford Three Window Coupe. One day I was showing a picture of a ‘32 Ford to my fantastic wife, Barbara of thirty four years, and I told her I’m going to get one of these when I retire. Her response was, “Are you going to wait until you’re too old to get in it?”

The search was on. The first person I called was my good friend, Chris Cherry, in Florida. I told him I got the official “okay” from the boss that I can get my dream car. The only thing he said was, “I’m on it”. Chris found me a beautiful 1932 Ford located in New Hampshire. It was shipped to New Hampshire from Texas after the original owner became ill and moved away to be with his family. Unfortunately this gentleman passed away and the coupe was sold by his family with the estate. I purchased the car from his son after some hard nose negotiations. The car was shipped down to RI in May of 2012. I used the car throughout the summer but was not totally happy with the ride or performance.

That winter was the start of a complete rebuild to get the car to my liking. I called a good friend of mine, Bo Day, one of the best mechanic’s in RI. We sat down and discussed what I wanted to do to the car. I told Bo I want a reliable vehicle that I can jump in and drive to Boston at any time. A “to do” list was written and the rebuild began. The frame was a “Pete and Jakes” that was new and going to stay. The body and interior were perfect and would be left as is. The performance was not to my liking, so we started with removing the radiator,engine, transmission, front end, rear end, electrical system and we started all over.

The engine built by Bo Day is a summit racing block with “Dart” heads and an “Edelbrock” performance cam with roller rockers. The transmission is a 4L60E built by “Gearstar”.

The guys at Gearstar were very helpful and everything you need comes in the crate with the transmission including the wiring harness and computer. The rear end was a Ford 8” with a four link and “Afco” duel adjustable coil overs. The front end is a “Pete and Jakes”

straight axle with rack and pinion steering. Stopping power is generated with “Wilwood” four wheel power discs brakes. Cooling and heating is accomplished by using “Vintage Air” Generation 2 kit. Power windows were added (universal power window kit for hot rods) to help in making the driving experience more enjoyable. The wheels are “American Racing” five spoke aluminum with Cooper Cober tires. Paint was a Honda motorcycle color called Autumn Orange, metallic two coat.

One of the last things to do was to dress up the finish of the Coupe with some art work and striping. This took some time to decide on who should do this part of the build. After a few conversations with friends and fellow gear heads it was agreed that Davey Jones was the man for the job. And boy did he deliver, the striping and art work really stands out and makes the car draw you in for a closer look. I couldn’t be any happier. Thanks Dave-it was a fantastic job.

The Coupe rebuild was completed by May of 2013 and has been putting a smile on my face ever since the first ride. This car will drive at 80 MPH straight as an arrow with one hand on the wheel.

I would like to thank Bo Day for all his long hours and hard work helping me build my dream car.

THE MERCURY THAT MADE THE COUGAR ROAR

ROB MAY Jennifer Kysar, from Charles Town, West Virginia, is the current owner of this 1971 Cougar XR7 Convertible.

Raised in a car family, Jennifer is the 5th child of Carroll and Virginia Tintinger. Her father sold cars, and both her parents were very active in old car clubs. In 1978, this car was purchased by her father. It was his daily driver for quite a few years. In 2013, Jennifer acquired this cat from her dad.

From 1979, a vintage photo shows Chauncey, the advertising Cougar animal, on the hood of the Mercury Cougar. The animal handler passed the leash to her dad, who was working as a new Ford salesman at Mahoney Ford in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. When the trainer tapped on the car, the cat snarled and swiped his paw. “My dad was ecstatic!” said Jennifer.

After the Cougar was at home, the transmission and the carburetor were rebuilt. Both have made a huge difference in the way she runs. A previous owner had installed hood pins which her dad had removed.

A key feature is the color combo. 1971 was the last year that black was offered as a stock color. With the white interior, it is very attractive car.

According to the Marti report, this cat was only 1 of 18 with these color and interior codes. Black perfectly shows off the body lines of this model.

IMPOSSIBLE DREAM CRUISIN’ EVENT 2017 JIM WEICHERDING Motorhead Magazine was very busy in the month of September. Appearing at Drag Races, Circle Track Races, Cruise Nights and Classic Car Shows all across the region all month long.

The one car show that sticks out is the one that took place at a Warwick Playground recently called imPOSSIBLE DREAM. This event wasn’t huge and had more than one hundred show vehicles but it was just as much fun as any of

the other car show events I attended all season long.

The entire event was to benefit the establishment and charities across the City of Warwick, Rhode Island. I was invited to this event, much like many other similar events, to showcase my Buckleupallofus giant balloon reminding kids and families to wear seat belts. I contacted the Warwick Police Department as soon as I received the invitation, just a couple days before the event was to take place, and they were very happy to help out and send their police officers over to the event to help pass out Buckleupallofus coloring posters, coloring books, stickers and refrigerator magnets to all of the kids. Believe me, there were a lot of kids! There were more kids than show vehicles and adults at

this charity car show.

Everyone was so nice and we all had a great time. 95.1 Classic Rock radio station was at the event doing a live on-air radio broadcast and even interviewed this writer on their radio show. It was a nice surprise to be interviewed and I used that on-air interview to thank the Warwick Police Department and supporters of my ongoing Kids Safety community events, classic car shows and raceevents across the region all season long.

This is also an event to watch for in 2018. Motorhead Magazine will be back there again and this time add more show vehicles, spectators and kids to help benefit the establishment and charities across the City of Warwick, Rhode Island.

MUSCLE PALOOZA JIM WEICHERDING Motorhead Magazine attended one of the coolest drag racing venues in New York State this past September 4th.

It’s called, MUSCLE PALOOZA. This drag racing venue was hosted at Lebanon Valley Dragway on a gorgeous end of summer weekend.

There were plenty of 60’s Muscle Cars and Vintage Cars showcasing and drag racing at Lebanon Valley Dragway located in Lebanon Valley New York at this year’s Muscle Palooza.

Vintage Mopars, Chevys, Fords and Pontiac Drag Cars made pass after pass to the delight of all the spectators and drag racing fans in the stands as the sounds of loud exhaust, screaming tires and crowd echoed across the hilly countryside in this rural New York community.

There were vintage Chargers, Camaros, Challengers, Chevelles, Hemi Power Plants and a lot more beautiful drag cars and show cars as far as the eyes could see.

The noise, the fast paced excitement and adrenaline rush was overwhelming throughout the event. Motorhead Magazine was there for the excitement and saw plenty of drag racing action and will not hesitate to return for this high octane event again next year.

ROB MAY It is easy being Green when you are a 1971 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible! Larry Medich, from Middletown NJ, purchased his Cougar from Ebay in 2010. Initially, the engine was seized due to a bad starter. The top had damage, and the windshield was cracked. Unfortunately, it was extremely rusted.

The restoration of this car included repairing the floor pans, trunk area, hood, and doors. After learning about C and M Auto Body of Keyport NJ getting hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Larry tried to assist them any way possible. Sadly, most of the customers’ cars were destroyed. With the metal work already done on his Cougar, it was ready to send it out to the shop for paint. As one of the few cars they were able to actually work on, his Mercury was finished in a few weeks.

Interior parts are difficult to find. In New Jersey, parts were acquired from J&D Cougars. Ace Auto tops in Red Bank NJ repaired the seats.

The most unique feature of this car would have to be the color. The original color was a dark green, and Larry decided to go with the Gotta Get it Green 2014 Mustang color. Once, while parked at home, a patrol car kept circling the block. On about the 4th pass, the officer asked “I can’t figure it out, what is it?” The engine is the 351 Cleveland with its carb changed to a 4bbl version. The transmission is a FMX. His cat ventures out from Spring to Fall. Cruising in the Cougar is so smooth, it feels like driving on a cloud. Larry looks forward to driving his Cougar as much as he can.

The most challenging task that we are trying to put off this winter is ultimately cleaning out the garage.

There are a ton of items to go through, from left over assorted tools, to containers of grease, to half empty bottles of fluids that are bringing us a sense of unnecessary clutter. What even the most vigilant person hasn’t considered is the actual probability of their products being “expired” or well past use.

When perusing through your stash of goods on top off your toolbox and shelves, you might want to keep one basic question in mind.

“How long have I had this?” One of the most prominent contaminants that will unfold right before your eyes which can be a dreadful harm to your vehicle is hydroscopic fluids. What does hydroscopic mean? Hydroscopic describes something that will readily take up and retain moisture.

A common hydroscopic fluid that would cause quite a conundrum is brake fluid.

When brake fluid absorbs moisture, the boiling point of the fluid becomes lower and will cause the fluid to compress less. Moisture within your braking system will give the fluid the ability to limit your braking power, and in turn rust out your brake lines and all necessary hardware and components. Being a New Englander during the winter months will accelerate your fluid’s water-sucking habits and this is why it is discourage to keep larger containers on your garage shelf. An auto backup camera is a special kind of video camera that is manufactured specifically for use at the rear of a vehicle to assist with backing up. These cameras are also known as rear view cameras or reversing cameras.

The driver on a dash-mounted monitor displays the image that the camera captures for viewing.

An auto backup camera is distinctly different than other types of cameras because the image is flipped horizontally so the output that he is viewed is a mirror image of what is being captured. This is critical because the driver of the vehicle and the camera would face opposite directions and the cameras left would be the drivers right and vice versa. The mirrored image captured by the camera makes the orientation of the monitor’s display consistent with the image displayed by the vehicle’s mirrors.

An auto backup camera normally features a wide angle lens. While this type of lens lessens the cameras ability to capture distant objects, it allows it

to view a horizontal line, completely uninterrupted, from one corner to corner of the rear of the vehicle.

In order to view obstacles and the position of docks or walls, the lens is typically pointed downward rather than straight back.

An auto backup camera is perfect for use on vehicles such as motor homes or those pulling trailers. These cameras are also commonly used in an SUV that has decreased visibility because of blind spots that are larger than a typical car. Basically, they can be used when driving any vehicle to enhance security and safety. They easily detect children’s toys or other hazards that may be behind a vehicle. These types of hazards are not seen in a rear view mirror unless they are a fair distance away from the vehicle.

More and more automobile manufacturers are offering the auto backup camera as an optional factory accessory on most sport utility vehicles and standard passenger trucks. However, these packages are often expensive and many drivers choose to add this after-market accessory themselves. With the increase in popularity of in-dash GPS navigation systems and DVD players, many safety conscious drivers are taking advantage of the LCD display that these systems require and using it to monitor what’s behind their vehicle.

An auto backup camera may prevent an accident that could result in injury and an increase in your insurance premiums. The technology is constantly improving, making it possible for manufacturers to offer these cameras at prices that the general public can afford. With a little bit of research, a backup camera can be purchased for about $100.00 -$300.00 depending on the system purchased. The Tasca Ford Mustang Car Show not only attracted Mustang owners from across New England, they came from across the USA to showcase their cherished rides.

My biggest surprise at this event was meeting Steve Saleen and having my own copy of Motorhead Magazine autographed by Steve on the full page Tasca advertisement and acknowledgement section of the magazine. I will always keep this

There were a lot of Mustangs showcasing in two very large parking lots on the Tasca Ford Dealership at the event. It took more than two hours just to take them all in. also located in Burrillville, RI. Steve Saleen actually autographed Rogerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Saleen Mustang for him.

This was by far, one of the best Ford Mustang

to do so. Not when it was convenient for them.

The staff is courteous and truly concerned about customer satisfaction. All of the Tasca Dealerships

Bob Tasca lll and Steve Saleen were very friendly and signed a lot of take home items from tee shirts, to signs, mugs, dashboards and more for Mustang owners and enthusiasts. The food was delicious and the live band rocked the house throughout the day. It was a great venue and a lot of fun for the kids and adults.

There were more than 30 Saleen Mustangs showcasing at the Tasca Ford Mustang Car Show and the American Saleen Club was well represented. Our very own Rhode Island resident and 1996 Saleen Mustang owner, Roger Fortune, from Burrillville, took home a 3rd Prize Trophy at the Tasca Mustang Car Show. His Saleen Mustang was

Bill Randall from Bill Randall General Contracting brought you his customized golf cart which you saw in the August issue with the 24 inch wheels; the September issue he brought you his amphibious golf
