Poster Design Swiss Human Rights America

In this class we were asked to create a new campaign or product for an existing brand or organization. We could choose to cover any topic we wanted, however we were highly encouraged to find something that we believed to be important and that needed addressing.

The outcome for this project was a set of very simple yet powerful posters. They were designed to be read instantly, and to get the viewer to stop and wonder what this campaign is all about. These posters utilize bold colors and strong simple typography on a strict grid. Each poster depicts a different violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that occurs in the United States on a daily basis. A website was also created to go along with this project where a viewer could go to learn more about Human Rights, as well as view the different posters.

Design Objectives Here in America we often site human rights violations as a reason for sanctions or trying to force our views on other countries. However, every day in the United States human rights are being violated. This project is a hypothetical poster series that would be released by the United Nations that aims to remind Americans that we should worry about our own country once in a while before trying to police the world.

Brief

Outcome

Branding Logo Community Music

The assignment for this project was to first find a brand that we considered to be defunct or in need of a refreshing, and then to rebrand it. Our task was to not only create the visual identity system for our brand, but also choose what extensions it would express itself in.

The outcome for this project was a re-branding of Capitol Records. Through this project I looked at how the idea of how we sell music is outdated. This re-branding looked at creating a community around music again. It explored how music brings people together and how that can be used as a business model, focusing more on live concerts, merchandise, and creating a music sharing site.

Design Objectives The design objectives of this project were to learn how to rebrand a company and create a strong visual identity. There was also a second objective which was to learn how to take that identity and turn it into a new business plan of how the company can change in the future.

The assignment for this project was to create an experimental typographic poster for a song from a band of our choosing. We were to use a light projector and transparencies to create the poster.

The outcome of this project was a poster for the band the Blood Brothers. Using a light projector, inks, transparencies and cut outs I was able to achieve a poster that captures the feeling of their music. Their music is powerful, loud and intense. I aimed to create a poster in this similar style.

Design Objectives The objective of this project was to see what kind of fun vibrant and exciting poster you could create without using too much Photoshop.

Eames Mid-Century Fun Furniture

This project was to concept and design a paint line for an existing company, or to create one for a famous designer or architect.

For this project I wanted to channel the success and quality of the Eames designs into the paint world by offering a line of high quality beautiful paints for the discerning customer. In creating my design I was heavily inspired directly from the work of Charles and Ray Eames. Some examples that ended up really standing out were the balls from their hang it all and the patterns from their fabric designs. In the end, I established a series of paint cans that were fun, yet also true to the spirit of the Eames.

Motorcycles Sophisticated Classic Performance

The assignment for this project was to choose an existing brand that does not have a skin care line, and to create one for it. Our assignment was to create a full skin care line and an in-store display.

For this project I decided to work with the Italian motorcycle company Ducati. They seemed like the kind of brand that would create, and could benefit from creating a sophisticated and upscale skin care line for their high end clients. I crafted my design around the history and heritage of the company and used their classic colors of white and red for the bottles and display. For the design of the display and badges on the bottles I looked back and found one of their old gas tank badges, and modified it into what you see here.

Design Objectives The design objectives for this project was to create and carry a branding identity across a full skin care line as well as to create a display for those products for in the store.

Desire Want Things Cool

This class was a magazine design class. Our goal, was to choose a subject and to do great deals of research on it, collecting articles and eventually turning all that information into a magazine.

The end result of my research was a magazine that I designed. It focused on what we as people and consumers want, and how we are influenced in terms of what we want. It is a visually exploration through food, products, art and sex. Why do we want the things that we want? What is cool? Does sex really sell? Inside this magazine you can find the answers. Strong imagery and playful typography help communicate these ideas without getting in the way and give the end user a product that they will find themselves desiring.

Design Objectives For this project, our object was to learn how to do thorough research into a subject, and from that research create a beautiful and compelling magazine. For my subject I chose to research communication. After a good deal of exploring the subject I became interested in how we communicate desire. I was interested in how desire was communicated through both the media and on an individual level.

The assignment for this project was to create a birdhouse out of reclaimed materials for an existing company or organization.

The end outcome of this project was a sculptural birdhouse for the organization 826 Valencia. 826 Valencia is a non-profit organization that offers tutoring services for children after school with reading and writing. When it was formed it took up a space that required a commercial business. In order to fulfill this they created a pirate store. The pirate store has grown in popularity and now supports the tutoring labs entirely, as well as helps the children get excited about reading and writing. This product was created to be sold at auction to raise money for 826 Valencia.

Design Objectives The objective of this project was to learn how to design with form in three dimensions.

For this class we were to create a hypothetical film festival and then design all that would go along with it. This included a logo, posters, DVDs, schedules a catalog and gifts.

The end outcome of this project was a vibrant and emotional film festival. Akira Kurosawa made most of his movies in black and white, but when he got his hands on color film he went all out and really explored the possibilities. When I designed this project I kept that in mind. I wanted to capture the dark yet hopeful and optimistic feelings of his movies by using strong contrasting lights, darks and colors.

Design Objectives The objectives of this assignment was to create a brand across multiple deliverables, all while capturing the essence and style of your director.

Climate Change Branding Community Thesis

The thesis project is our final project in graduate school. This is the culmination of our degree and education at the Academy of Art. Our brief is to choose a topic we care about, research it thoroughly and then create a piece of design that is meaningful as well as beautiful.

For my thesis I imagined a future where we did not do enough to stop climate change. The every day items we take for granted, yet that are necessary to our survival, such as food and water, energy, and access to materials are running out. To cope with these disasters, a company called Ration has been created to control and distribute our remaining vital goods, as well as to help the public learn how to cope with and fight climate change.

Design Objectives The objectives of our thesis can be whatever we would like it to be, as long as it is approved by our committee of course. I decided for my thesis to focus on climate change, and to try and create an emotional connection between the public and the realities of the dangers that come with climate change.
