Museum of Contemporary Art | 575 Queen St. Extra - Curricular Project Individual Submission Compression is a contemporary art museum at the heart of Queen Street West which mediates between the neighborhood and metropolitan scales to create a unique artifact that seemingly hovers above the streetscape. Galleries are wedged into the existing infill lot, taking advantage of contrived artificial lighting, while the mass above houses rentable creative media office space which takes advantage of the thinness of built infrastructure to capture natural light and views. A light faรงade of perforated steel and window wall contrast the heavy base of corten steel paneling and concrete. A large circulation path winds its way around the exterior of the building, highlighting the users experience as they pass through the multifaceted spaces from the exterior.

ROOFTOP TERRACE & PATIO The Rooftop Patio marks the end of the public museum space, and provides an eating area for the restaurant and offices.

ENTRANCE LOBBY A full double story height is opened up for an entryway along Queen street. A small reception and cafe open onto the circulation space, where the original demising wall is left exposed. The gallery space above opens into the atrium.

Replay Centre | Akihabara District, Tokyo Competition Entry Group Submission The Akihabara district in Tokyo is a unique micro community of dense retail and recreational program that flourishes in almost any location, yet its density does not allow open cultural spaces to emerge. “Lantern” proposes to morph the existing street activity into a multi-layered cultural hub that maintains a high level of permeability. The atrium is generated by the stratification of program and the juxtaposition of vertical circulation. Dense program at opposite ends of the site create two distinct masses that are wrapped with a digital media wall, becoming a beacon to engage the street. During the day the media wall becomes a source for displays, embracing new and old cultural media. At night the media wall is turned off to expose interior activity.

0.4 - PACE

Ryerson Health Science’s Building | 255 Church Street Studio Project Individual Submission 255 Church street is the location of the new Ryerson Health Sciences (RHS) building. It houses a mixed program for laboratory space, faculty offices, study rooms, workshops and lounges while reintegrating other displaced faculties (Urban Planning, Biology, Interior Design). It acts parasitically; puncturing and incorporating other campus buildings to create highly contrived, interwoven atria, which serve as the circulation routes. The site is fragmented into a series of masses split by large articulations of vertical circulation. The stairs are designed to pull in activity and continue the street facade to the interior spaces of the block, while in turn reanimating a much neglected area. A custom facade is used as both visual articulation and sun shading, while the at grade condition remains highly porous.

CIRCULATION AND STAIRS The central stairs gain access onto multiple spaces within the building. In this way, the interior circulation acts not only to convey movement, but houses a variety of open spaces allowing for informal study areas, lounges, a media zone, offices and flex space. 04 | PACE

Helsinki Public Library | Helsinki Finland Competition Entry Group Submission Helsinki library both frames urban space and activity while being an object in its own right, participating in the collection of most prominent public buildings surrounding the new Kansalaistori Plaza. It needs to be both foreground and background as iconic architecture and urban fabric. Between the cultural city centre, and the natural edge of the Toolonlahti park and bay, the building’s form is inspired by the local rugged landscape of water, and igneous rock of the fennoscandian shield. Like the erratic granite boulders left behind by the glaciers, the building teeters on the smooth granite beach of the adjacent plaza, where its base is eroded to allow entry from all four sides. A large atrium is carved from its centre, marking the primary central entrance, addressing the parliament building to the west. The atrium opens up the centre of the oblong plan to allow for natural ventilation through convection, free night cooling, and sunlight to enter.

Home for a Mortician | 139a Spadina Studio Project Individual Submission Wide open is a paradoxically set house in the lot of the wide open bar on Spadina Street. It is designed to house a mortician and his family and explores the duality in which the profession can be viewed; emotional vs. distant, public vs. private, give and take, ostracized and respected, reserved and compassionate. The house is designed to be at once inherently part of the city, but at the same time exist quite independently.

Morticians are often represented as having a fascination with death. While the occupation itself pertains entirely to the end of life, a more accurate description of the characteristics of a mortician would be a transcendence of the death process, as the celebration of life becomes their primary concern. This understanding is only made possible through a deep empathy for the family of the deceased. To feel the grief for those left behind adds a deep seated endearment to the profession, and thus, the nature of my sample mortician is split between an inherent - and very human - need for contemplative solitude, and his natural tendency towards an outgoing compassion. This is the parallax in which the house is situated. The plurality suggests two extremes situated in the same project; a remote stoicism ingrained within an enigmatic public entity. The interaction between these two parallels defines the atmosphere - to me- of the house and mortician. GIVING BACK AT GRADE 5

CONTEMPLATION A doubly skinned perforated steel box hovers off the end of the building. The room is open to the sky, and through various cuts, obscures the view, though not the sound. In this duality the user is at once intrinsically part of the city they occupy, though distinctly separated. In this, lies the duality of the mortician. P|13

The at grade lot is reclaimed as a vest park and additional seating area for the cafe at 401 Richmond to the rear. Narrow beech trees line the interior axis of the space, while glazed panels allow daylighting and reflection to bounce within.


ROOFTOP The top floor opens out onto a spacious rooftop patio overlooking the city and the exterior room to make up for lack of a traditional yard. 06 | WIDE OPEN


0.7 - REDUX DUFFERIN Master Plan | Dufferin Grove, Toronto Studio Project Individual Submission Redux Dufferin involves a new masterplan for a 26 hectare site in west Toronto housing a strip mall, Community Park and several soon to be demolished institutional spaces. The project takes the methodology of an artistic community to help revitalize the area. It uses formal and informal performance spaces to help reanimate the public spaces. The project is oriented along two main axis; one attached north south to Bloor Street provides for pedestrian movement, and two, an angled pathway to the park, which remains much the way it started. At the crux of these two pathways is an office complex. The mall is completely removed and its retail component reconstituted into the scheme in the form of retail podiums and plinth buildings, while the site’s density is nearly tripled from its existing condition.

DUFFERIN REDEVELOPMENT: URBAN PERFORMANCE VILLAGE

MAINTYPOLOGY: ROOFTOP BRIDGES BY ENCORPORATING A BRIDGE SYSTEM THAT PERMEATES THE SITE ALONG THE MAIN AXIS’ THE PROJECT ALLOWS FOR A MIRRORED MOVEMENT PATH WHICH ENHANCES THE VERTICAL CIRCULATION OF THE SITE. IN THIS WAY, THE BUILDINGS THEMSELVES BECOME AN EXTENSION TO THE LANDSCAPE OF THE PROJECT. AND BECOME VIEWING PLATFORMS FOR THE MANY INFORMAL PERFORMANCE SPACES THAT PERMEATE THE SITE. IT ALSO CREATES AN ADDITIONAL LAYERING TO THE CENTRAL PLAZA AXIS.

MAIN TYPOLOGY: PLAZA THE PLAZA REPRESENTS THE MAJOR FORMAL GESTURE ON THE SITE AND IS A WAY OF STRUCTURE THE DESIGN ON . IT TWISTS THE TYPICAL GRID OF THE CITY (N/W) OFF ITS AXIS TO BETTER ALIGN THE BLOCK STRUCTURE TO THE PARK. THIS IN TURN RETURNS TO BLOOR STREET, MAINTAING A STRONG STREET EDGE, BUT ALLOWING MORE PERMIABILITY AGAINST THE EXISTING FABRIC THAN NORMAL IN HOPES OF FACILITATING BETTER MOVEMENT THROUGH IT. THE PLAZA IS MAINLY OPEN SPACE, BUT IS LINED WITH CHERRY BLOSSOM TREES AND LOW VEGITATION. IT IS A PLACE TO SPEND AN AFTERNON SHOPPING, READING A BOOK IN THE SUN, OR WATCHING ANY INFORMAL PERFORMACNE ALONG IT. THE PLAZA IS THE CULMINATION OF THE VERY DIFFERNT PROGRAM DRIVERS ON THE SITE COMING TOGETHER AND MIXING IN THE CONTEXT OF PERFORMANCE ARTS

AN ENTRANCE TO BLOOR STREET Bloor street becomes one of the main axis of the projects circulation. Two arms permeate the density along Bloor to allow access to the theatre and linear plaza. Dense retail and community space line the two arms, with a series of residential towers and bar buildings hovering above it. SS

The wide avenues are lined with cherry blossom trees and pop up pavilions to create activity within. Circulation also feeds into the walkable roofscape, providing concentric travel paths.

URBAN PLAZA The focus of the project becomes the central urban plaza at the crux of the two major axis points from Bloor street parallel Dufferin, and the artificial one from Dufferin Grove. It culminates in a sunken ice rink viewable from the large stairways leading to the roofscapes. The surrounding spaces are designed as flexible performance spaces to animate the ‘performance village’ aspect of the project and act as another outlet to parallel the formal theatre space to the north. It is surrounded by two tall office towers and a series of high intensity low rise retail to help replace the lost function of the mall in a more urban friendly approach. The plaza extends into the park space and culminates in a minimal gym and community centre facility.

They surround critical junctions as well as quieter, pedestrian only areas. Bathurst Condominium | 111 Bathurst Street Work Project Group Submission Oneeleven Bathurst is a a 17 story, 20 000 square meter condominium designed by Core Architects. It features 255 individual units, commercial at grade, and a level of offices above it. It is made unique by staggering loft style units on multiple floors. My function in the project was part of a two man team working on the construction set. I worked with the office over a four month period, and was responsible for the comprehensive Revit model throughout the construction development phase. When I left, the project was going for building permits, and is currently under construction.
