Jasmin Vardimon Company and new work Freedom
By Diana Dicker
Jasmin Vardimon is British-based, Israeli-born, creating provocative and quirky dance theatre with a daring physicality. Her dance language style is Pilates meets army gym instructor and, artistically, she is the “daughter” of Pina Baush. The company was founded in 1997; she is an Artistic Associate at Sadlers Wells and the Guest Artistic Director for the National Youth Dance Company 2013. In 2012 she opened a new permanent production space in a leisure centre in Ashford, Kent which is both the working home of the company and an educational training centre awarding a Professional Development Certificate. And her www.danceforyou-magazine.com
current show is the first to be created in the luxury of having a dedicated studio and being able to stay in one place to work on creating a piece. Passionate and political, her new work, Freedom, explores freeing the imagination and includes animation and nudity. Her choreography is inspired by exploring the human condition and how people make sense of their experiences. It opens in a dreamlike swamp full of evocative tropical sounds and flitting fireflies of light as a dancer climbs over a leafy rock, a living set of dancers huddled under a jungle net. It progresses with passion, danger, laughter and fear.
