“It’s like having a slumber party every night.” — Lang Leav, poet, on love Child star no more, Dakota reveals her dark side

I

t’s cheesy, I know, but I love to stargaze — it’s how I let my mind wander, relax, and it’s just one of the ways I try to find inspiration. Speaking of which, this month we were able to track down the hottest duos in our fashion industry who have been on the runways of Milan and KLFW. Find out what inspires them to create some of the most beautiful wearable art (page 78). And when the internet went full buzz when Donald Trump’s atrocious sexist remarks were leaked, we couldn’t sit back and let rape culture be normalised. So we hit back with our Smart Report on sexual assault (page 88). Start your very own Broken Hearts Club with these two poets we interviewed exclusively — one a Malaysian who has published her works internationally and the other, acclaimed modern poet Lang Leav (page 114). We also have ideas worth dating: like cool alt ways to spend Feb 14 (page 101), and if you are going to dine out, try these CLEO-approved food pairings (page 116). Single or not, you’ll love the 37 real-life dating stories we put together as told by you: think Tinder-tragic (page 82). Gift the most important person you know with fab perfume ideas (page 48) and accessories to sparkle any day (page 66). And if it’s a still, clear night on Feb 14, you’ll most likely find me ... with my head in the stars.

Guess where I am? Find out in our #CLEOClicks series!

Shu Uemura Brow Palette, RM127

In a sea of pared-back peaches this season, there is the sudden boldness of solid brows and drama lashes. Saying thick brows are a mainstay for this look is an understatement — they’re coloured deeply for impact and matched with heavy, fluttery eyelashes. The reverse smokey also hints here, so slicking on some glimmer on the lower lashline will lend a little balance to the look. You can save the peachy tones for the cheeks and lips and go — you already have look-at-me eyes. 

beauty Q A

Clarins Booster Detox (15ml), RM190

How do you really use

Serums? Short of going to a beauty counter, we lay out how to use this must-have.

Drank too much last night? Boost skin with the Clarins Booster Detox, a highlyconcentrated formula with green tea extract to help and treat damage. It’ll resuscitate party girl skin that’s congested (thanks, make-up, cigarette smoke and no-sleep); for max radiance and suppler skin. This is a little different from the rest — as a booster, add a few drops into into your usual face cream, foundation or face mask, then apply, once a day.

The Body Shop Drops Of Light Pure Healthy Brightening Serum (30 ml), RM179

42

CLEO.COM.MY FEBRUARY 2017

Q

The serum isn’t new, but there are just so many to choose from now, each with their own way to transform skin. Is it worth investing in, and where do I start?

A

Serums are overlooked sometimes, but they should already be a mainstay in your routine. Basically, you apply after cleansing, toning and before your moisturiser. Don’t wait too long after a shower — applying it soon after when pores are still open means it ’ll absorb so much better. Follow our guide to help you decide what ’s for you.

Skin’s parched? Go for green tea — nature’s most famous antioxidant — to flush out toxins, heal blemishes, and improve elasticity. Made with 100 per cent green tea extract, Innisfree The Green Tea Seed Serum can help restore skin’s moisture and regenerate hydration that ’s stripped away when skin is exposed to daylight, pollution and free radicals.

Innisfree The Green Tea Seed Serum (80ml), RM90

For that “effortless” glow, try The Body Shop Drops Of Light Brightening Serum. As The Body Shop is known for using only natural ingredients, red algae extract is a core ingredient, promising brightness from the sea. The texture is lightweight and velvety, so it glides onto skin and is quickly absorbed. You’ll probably notice results after a few days (honestly, we’re a huge fan of this range) — quality of skin will improve tremendously. Also, it ’s suited for all skin types. 

bringing back

the ’90s Our favourite decade is back. We sifted through the oh-God-why trends (‘ Bye, Bye, Bye’, thin brows) but are very much still in love with these retro looks. THE TRENd: BERRY AND BROWN LIPS REVIVE IT FOR: VALENTINE’S DAY Whether you've got a hot romantic date or Single Ladies’-ing it with the girlfriends, the ’90s dark lippie will always be your best partner-in-crime. The key to pulling off the plum lip just like Gigi is to choose the right shade based on your skin tone.

NOW FOR FAIR SKIN

Clinique Pop™ Matte Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Shock Pop, RM83

t he girl The child star all grown up, Dakota Fanning reverses roles to play a mother, and shows us the lighter side of her dark movies.

i

t ’s not always easy to see Dakota as the 23-year-old she is now — it ’s almost as though she stepped through a time warp and ended up here. Starting her acting career at five as a rosy-cheeked child, we pretty much grew up with her. The heart-rending tale of I Am Sam (2001) where she played the child of a mentally-handicapped man (Sean Penn), fighting for her custody, has stayed with us as long as the haunting kidnapping tale of Man On Fire (2004), with Denzel Washington as her bodyguard. Fast forward to now, and Dakota is working while studying, fittingly, the role of women in film. Settling into the Big Apple was easy enough, and she takes on her new, more confronting roles while juggling student life. The transition, thankfully, was smooth: “It ’s a very busy, hectic city. I’m lucky, all my friends from school when I was younger moved to New York.” Adulthood meant really shaking off her child star persona, and taking on darker projects. It started last year in Brimstone which was a twisted period piece that bended genres, with Dakota as a mute mother trying to save her family from the forces of evil. If it wasn’t a sign of the times, Dakota knew exactly how to treat her child co-star. “I really benefited from the actors that I worked with when I was younger, treating me as an equal to them and not babying me,” she said. It didn’t end there; in American Pastoral , Dakota played a rebellious teen, plagued with a stutter, who goes on the lam after being a suspect in a ’60s revolt. This rebellious streak continued. In her January release, Please Stand By, she played an autistic girl who runs away from her caregiver in an attempt to submit her manuscript to a writing competition. A film, she says, that has some light moments to it. Here, she reveals what exactly has kept her grounded, how she doesn’t let fame get to her head, and what has ignited her fire within to take on all these new challenges.

“The more challenging roles kind of do take you to a darker place ... I enjoy pushing myself and being vulnerable.” striving to make a very sort of epic film. I think that it ’s exciting to challenge yourself and to also make films that challenge the people watching them as well and I think that this definitely does that and Martin is not afraid to push the boundaries. Do you think that this movie speaks to your generation? You know, I hope so. I mean you never really know what someone will connect to in a film. It ’s like people see something and it makes them feel something you never even thought of. I think ultimately the goal is to just make someone feel something by watching it whatever that is.

TA KIN G IT TO THE STREETS Casual-cool ’90s vibes in Soho, NY

American Pastoral has also brought you to very dark places. Is that accidental or is that your affinity? I think that in this case it was probably accidental. I think the more challenging roles kind of do take you to a darker place a lot of the time. Not all the time but a lot of the time and I enjoy doing that. I enjoy pushing myself and being vulnerable and exploring uncomfortable or confronting roles. After these experiences, is it also important for you to rebalance yourself and bring yourself into a more neutral place? Funnily enough! Brimstone was filmed in two parts in the summer and then we took a break and then we filmed in the winter and in between I did American Pastoral. [Laughs] Then, the second part of Brimstone took us up to the holidays. I went home for the holidays for a bit and then I did another film that started the first week of January — it was so different and it was much lighter and it was challenging in a different way and so it was nice. I did kind of have something to balance me out just creatively. In terms of personally, I think after Brimstone , after both of the experiences, I definitely had pushed myself harder than I think I ever had before and I realised, I think I do my best when I’m being pushed like that and feeling like you’re working hard and like really giving everything you have and so that kind of excited me. I also felt very fulfilled. People might think that acting is just like you lounge in a trailer and then someone calls you and you sort of stumble out and do a little scene and go back. It ’s really not like that. It ’s also nice to see you have now played a mum in Brimstone ! Yeah I know! How was it acting with a child — because that used to be you. How did you approach that? I think that I really benefited from the actors that I worked with when I was younger treating me as an equal to them and not babying me or making excuses

It ’s exciting to watch her grow and change and see the things that she does. It’s very exciting for me. You’re a fashion icon to your generation. How do you feel about the red carpet and being in the public eye? I don’t mind. As an actor, you have premieres to attend and all that, and fashion becomes the tool that you use in how you present yourself to other people. If not, everyone usually sees you just in a film and that ’s not you, and you’re not in the clothes you would normally wear, and you don’t look the way you normally would look. So it ’s kind of an opportunity to show people who you actually are. Can fame make you insecure? Can fame make you insecure? Yeah certainly, I sure think it can! [Laughs] I think it can if you let it. Certainly. You put yourself out there for lots of judgment and critique but I think it ’s important to remember that really the only people that I know and that know me, those are the people that I give the most value to in terms of their opinion. People that don’t know you, they make up some stuff because they’ve seen a picture of you doing something and then they pass judgment. It ’s like “You don’t know any context, you don’t know me, you don’t even know what I sound like”. So I think if you let it, it could definitely make you insecure ... 

and it made me learn and be professional. So I just try to do that as much as I could. I think a lot of the time people talk down to kids and I think we really do children a disservice when you do that because they are learning how to be a person in the world. I think that it’s great to empower younger people to be able to like, I don’t know, have a real conversation, not pretend. And she [Ivy George] was a really beautiful, sweet little girl and so we had a nice time. Do you prefer working on those types of films rather than the Hollywood movies? For me personally it ’s a more rewarding experience when you are working under hard conditions and it just means that you’re really there because you love what you’re doing. It ’s not about the glamorous side or the fancy side. I feel it makes me feel better about myself and my career. Can you talk a bit about your character and Guy Pearce’s character in Brimstone ? Yeah I know, with Guy’s character I really only ever thought about it how it related to mine, and he’s this oppressive figure in my character’s life. I really just think of my character as a survivor and I think that a lot of the time, it was really important to me and to Martin that she didn’t come off as a victim and this woman that was having all this horrible stuff done to her. We didn’t want her to be full of self-pity. We wanted her to be strong and powerful and also, like you said, the fact that she is a mother at a certain point in the film, you kind of get to see that protective side, a mother protecting her child. So I really just saw her as that, as somebody who doesn’t fall victim to her circumstances and for Guy. Can you talk about the film released in January? Yeah, it’s called Please Stand By. It ’s directed by Ben Lewin, he’s an Australian director and Toni Collette is in it. I play a girl who is autistic and it was a great experience filming it and really, it ’s a serious film but there are a lot of light moments to it. Could you imagine doing a film together with your sister, Elle? I think we would love to one day. I think that we just want it to be the right thing because you only get sort of one chance to do that for the first time. So I think we want it to be something really special. Did you give her any advice when she started out on her acting career, being the bigger sister? I’ve never really given her any advice or anything like that. But I’m very proud of her and I think it ’s great

S

ean and Sheila’s tag-team approach to handling the growth of their eponymous brand is akin to a painter switching brushes to create a painting — both using different sets of tools to produce something beautiful, a complete image. While Sheila paints the bigger picture and take the reins in deciding the theme and concept of a collection, Sean ensures that each proverbial stroke of paint colours the brand just in the exact tone he has imagined. The design sketching part, however, is when they band together to brainstorm. “We get inspiration everywhere, especially with our adventures abroad and from the silver screens. Once we have that, we can bounce ideas off each other, get the ball rolling and start sketching.” In today’s fashion scene, it ’d be hard to miss a Sean and Sheila creation. Their designs showcase a refined take on simple tailored classics embedded with beautiful handmade fabrics. For the duo, marrying traditional silhouettes with modern tailoring is an essential pillar of the business. “There is something about how they made things in the past that inspires us and we believe that tradition must be respected. We look back so as to search for ways to evolve with our own perspective.”

CLEO 10 guys to date before your Dirty 30. http://cleo.com. my/10-guys-dateturn-30/

date dramas (and some disasters!)

Our readers get candid and come clean about the good, the bad and the ugly. Here’s what we learned from 37 dates.

going in blind RUN FOR THE HILLS

WHO HATES BRUNCH? “I was set up on a date with a guy that my friend swore we had so much in common with — for brunch. Ironic, looking at how the date played out. We argued for a good half hour about what brunch was. Then he had the gall to tell me that my job as a travel journalist was stupid! After brunch, we shook hands, and never spoke again.” — Tania, 25

DATE FRIGHT “I was out on a casual blind date and at the movies we bumped into a guy I had went on a date the previous week. Anxious, I told him that. We never spoke again.” — Xandra, 23

“My cousin set me up on a date with a colleague who was supposedly ‘fit’. We thought of trying out something different so we agreed on a run. I showed up with a cute workout outfit I put together, when he showed up with a Polo T-shirt and slideons. I was so puzzled by the whole situation but apparently he wanted to sit and talk, not run (where’s my memo?!). I convinced him to walk around the park, but after half a loop, he complained about his feet and whined about how he hated to get his clothes sweaty. Right.” — Samantha, 21

The first time we... CAN’T IT WAIT? “He brought me out to an ice-cream date at the park. Totally romantic right? Well, it totally could have been if only he didn’t get creepily sexual towards the end of the date. Not at night, but in broad daylight. I told him I was a virgin to get away!” — Carey, 20

THE RIGHT MARKETING “For some reason, he thought it was a good idea to go the pasar tani on our first date. I ended up getting sweaty, stinky and really disgusting. I was upset, and he knew. He made it up to me with a proper dinner date. That went well.” — Navena, 22

GIRL JOCK

FLAT AS HELL

“This was really weird and awkward. I like sports but I’m not into basketball, but the whole time, that’s all she talked about. Like, really specific — players, statistics, records, the whole nine yards. And then was straight up rude and belittled me for not knowing these things.” — Zein, 23

“We lived in the same building and I decided to ask her out for a date after always running into each other. Ten minutes in, I realised that everything interesting about herself were in the messages leading up to the date. Longest hour of my life.” — Reed, 23

GETTING DITCHED “After months of exchanged texts messages, I decided to bring my hot classmate to dinner. Half way through, she bumped into her guy friends, excused herself to say hello, then stayed with them the rest of the night.” — Sam, 22

WANDERING EYE “I was on a blind date in a bar, and we bumped into an attractive girlfriend of mine who had a table right behind us. I saw my date looking over my shoulder the whole time we talked, even spacing out a few times. I thought that I was boring him and tried hard to keep the conversation going. After a few drinks, he switched the focus on Jean *, asking so many questions about her, and even if she was single. I asked the waiter for the bill, paid my share and told him to his face what a d* ck move he made.” — Nadia, 24

PACK ATTACK

HEAVEN SENT “He seemed super sweet the entire date. By the end of the night he took my hand and placed it on his chest and told me that I was his soul mate from heaven and insisted that we go to church the next day and meet his parents. Thanks, but no?” — Ciara, 23

“So a friend set us up and I was instantly attracted by her vibe and looks. She seemed super happygo-lucky, modest and intelligent. We had the best conversations about the most random things till her friends showed up. I thought they were just stopping by until they pulled chairs to join us. I shot her a look and she was like “Oh, I hope you don’t mind my friends crashing.” I tried to let it slide but she was totally flirting with one of the other guys at the table. Bye.” — Daniel, 24

NOT SCARY AT ALL “After one meet with this Tinder match, he rocks up at my KLIA arrival as a surprise. I would’ve thought the gesture was sweet and all, but I was damn sure I hadn’t given him any of my flight details, apart from casually mentioning the date I’d be flying home. Mind you, this guy is Singaporean, and had no business in KL ... When I asked him why he was there, he said it was only because he missed me, and that he waited all day at the arrival gates. I freaked. Out. ” — Sofia, 23

BATTING FOR THE OTHER TEAM “It was the best, most organic date I’ve had in my life — she was beautiful and we had lots in common. I decided it was a good idea to slip my arms in hers, but she pushed me away and said: “I’m really sorry, you seem like a nice guy … but I’m a lesbian. I only went out with you to make my parents happy.” The 20 minute-ride home was the most awkward thing on earth!” — Kishen, 25

THINGS JUST AIN’T RIGHT... WHAT THE FFK “We never actually went out, we just kept cancelling on each other.” — Leanne, 20

“I’d been putting off a blind date my colleague had been dying to set me up with so I gave it a go. I get to the restaurant with a decent gut feeling from everything she had been been bragging about this lad; an affluent lawyer, esteemed family, a loft that overlooks the city, yada yada. We get to talking and it was going good until he gave me an IQ test on the spot. By the end of the night and after he found out that I had a ‘good score’, he kept it blunt and told me that we wouldn’t be able to date because I was too smart and would end up making his life miserable.”— Zamy, 28

Stop Telephoning “I was set up on a date with my roommate’s girlfriend’s friend. We met outside of the restaurant and Tina (my date) was on her cellphone. She smiled and walked in the restaurant, still clinging to her phone. I thought it would have been an important call so I let it slide, although I was quite put off. She ended the call, with no apology whatsoever for making me look like a fool (call me superficial but she was quite attractive), and ordered our food and get talking. She wasn't the chattiest, but I thought she needed to warm up like every other girl. Just as that thought crossed my mind, her phone rings and she picks it up, again, without apologising. She was on the phone for about 20 minutes, GOSSIPING. That was my cue to leave.” — Fattah, 25

HEDGING HIS BETS “A random guy from Facebook got in touch after months of being interactive on my online activity, and he seemed pretty decent. We decided to go grab some sushi, and I thought it was a date until he told the waiter to split the bill and said to me, ‘Sorry, I need to save money for a date this weekend’. We’re reaching our first year anniversary soon and it’s been great so far.” — Amyra, 23 “I was smitten from her Whatsapp DP to the time she walked in the bar. She was a mix of Thai, German and Malay — an extraordinary beauty. What really took me off my seat was her intellect. We had the most mentally stimulating conversations which lasted four hours straight. It never went further than that but we talk every now and then, and I’m still so damn attracted.” — Neal , 27

smart report When misogyny strikes

“Grab her by the p***y!” It’s 2017, yet rape culture is so normalised. Here’s how you hit back — and how to find help.

I

n July 2015, Emily Doe was sexually assaulted. International news detailed how the 23-yearold American had attended a fraternity party at Stanford University, and was later fingered while she was unconscious by then 19-year-old Brock Turner behind a dumpster. Shockingly, Brock defended himself, saying they were both drunk, and that because she remembered nothing from that night, she could not prove she didn’t consent to the act. Sadly, the headline-grabbing “Grab her by the p***y”-type assaults don’t just happen overseas. It happens all the time here, too. Closer to home, CLEO reader Caroline * wrote in to tell us how she was raped two years ago on her 26th birthday.

They were on friendly terms, and Caroline thought he was a decent guy until the married man repeatedly hit on her on the dancefloor at Zouk, whispering “I can satisfy you in bed since you don’t have anyone” — even with his wife in the vicinity. Since it was her birthday and she had eight glasses of wine (nearly three times her usual limit), she shrugged it off and ignored him. A few of them then shuttled to Gordon’s house, and Caroline tagged along. When they arrived, she went to one of the rooms and slept. The door was locked, but the intruder entered stealthily through the toilet of a co-joined

smart report

I get what I want!

A QUESTION OF CONSENT Generally, a very small percentage of women go to the police after being sexually assaulted. Andrea says rapes mostly go unreported because many “women do not recognise that they have been sexually assaulted or even consider themselves as victims”. To help answer this question, we consulted criminal lawyers Diana Ngiam and Sunil Sudheesan. In the simplest terms, rape occurs when “there was no consent; consent was given by the person under fear of injury or wrongly restraint to the person or to some other person; or if your actions were sufficiently communicated to the other person you are having sex with that you have changed your mind,” says Diana. Yet, consent is sometimes hard to establish, so we posed some tricky scenarios:

A. What if a woman says yes first, then says no later? B. What if she says it hurts, but doesn’t explicitly say stop? C. What if both parties were intoxicated? For the first scenario: “It ’s rape if the woman has sufficiently communicated to the man that she has changed her mind,” says Sunil. “Communication including verbal and non-verbal communication, which included the woman’s behaviour and conduct prior to, during and after the sex. The Court will take

90

CLEO.COM.MY FEBRUARY 2017

a holistic view of the facts to decide if there is enough evidence that the woman had communicated to the man that she no longer wanted the sex, despite agreeing to having sex initially,” adds Diana. For the second, it ’s a little tricky. Sunil says, “Rape is sex without consent; saying there is hurt is not the same as saying you do not consent,” and so he thinks it could be a difficult point to argue, but perhaps it can be seen as evidence that she has changed her mind. For the third, “it may be rape of the woman was intoxicated to the point of being incapable of consenting to having sex."

SIGNS OF STRUGGLE The recovery journey for rape and sexual assault is different for everyone, explains Elizabeth Ho, a consultant psychologist. Symptoms include exaggerated startled responses, flashbacks, feelings of hopelessness, the inability to function at work, discomfort with physical intimacy, self-mutilation and even suicidal tendencies. “If you notice your friend exhibiting increasing behavioral changes like the above, encourage her to seek help from mental health professionals well-versed in providing psychotherapy specific to trauma,” advises Elizabeth. If you have trouble trying to comfort her, refer to the box on the previous page.

WHAT’S TO BE DONE? Jon Shenk, the director of Audrie & Daisy, suggests early education in sexuality and rape prevention. He says: “Filming [the documentary] provided opportunities for excellent conversations — what to look out for and how to be a positive force in their friend groups when it comes to these kinds of issues. We do need to talk to our boys, to [help them] understand what images of sex and what models they have for relationships ... Education plays a big part." Lastly, victims need to know it ’s not their fault, whether they choose to report or not. But if they can, speak out - this is why Caroline decided to share her story with CLEO. “I’ve learnt to accept that I was a rape victim and that it was not my fault. Report immediately if you are raped, and go for counseling. It took me nearly three years of therapy and I do get flashbacks still, but at least now I have hope again.” 

HATE

Why hate when you can choose peace?

Someone do you wrong? It’s okay, just forgive. It’s good for you — experts say letting go of the past can lead to better relationships, less anxiety, and a stronger immunity. Time to rise above it all.

your life, lif your rules lust for life

THOUGHT NO.1: “I’M JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH”

“People might develop this belief during childhood if their parents were overly critical or set excessively high standards,” says Dr Timothy Sharp from The Happiness Institute (thehappinessinstitute.com.au ). Take some time to focus on what you’re good at and forget perfection. When you’re trying too hard, it often leads to avoidance so nothing gets done. So long as you try your best, this leads to more productivity and, ultimately, more happiness.

You are the only version of you

just say n o ... To all those negative thoughts. We consulted psychologists so you can hit “X” on self-hate today.

THOUGHT NO.2:

“I’LL NEVER FIND MY SOULMATE” The danger with a negative mindset is that it can easily create self-fulfilling prophecies. As Dr Sharp explains, “People who think like this develop behaviours that are unattractive, or that turn others away if there is some attraction.” Having realistic expectations of The One — ie that they may not necessarily be perfect — is crucial. Psychologist Sharon Bent says your happiness shouldn’t solely depend on your relationship status. “Embrace responsibility for your own contentment and develop strategies — that don’t rely on finding The One — to enhance your sense of purpose. Start doing some volunteer work with an organisation that you feel passionately about. You’ll soon find this will give you a more positive mindset, which will make you more attractive to others — and increase your likelihood of meeting a partner.”

94

CLEO.COM.MY FEBRUARY 2017

THOUGHT NO.3:

“I DON’T LIKE WHAT I SEE IN THE MIRROR” Yes, we’ve all had days when we’ve looked in the mirror and not loved what we saw. When those cute jeans are suddenly too tight. Are we too hard on ourselves? The answer is yes. And guess what — you’re stuck with what you have for life, so you can either be miserable about it, or accept it and get on. Or, you can change the things that can change. Want to cut a few inches? Cut out some sugar. Or, change your thought pattern when you see yourself: “What bits do I like?” And say, “So what if I don’t like what I see — others do!”

THOUGHT NO.4:

“MY FRIENDS ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN ME”

In the Insta-age it’s difficult to ignore the white-washed perfection that is your BFF’s feed, but know that people only show the glossy sides of their life. Your friend who’s running her start-up may not be paying herself a wage — and the person who’s travelling so much to all these far-flung places is most likely exhausted to the point of despair. This or not, it’s unhealthy to compare at the expense of your own confidence. Ask yourself, “What does success look and sound like to me?” Drawing on comparisons rarely lead to happiness so, instead, focus on what’s important to you. And guess what, if your friends really are successful, be happy for them!

THOUGHT no.5: “PEOPLE JUST DON’T ‘GET’ ME” Seriously, you might just be too hard on yourself. It’s most likely a misinterpretation of what you think people are thinking. If someone has blue-ticked you, don’t overreact — there could be so many reasons they couldn’t get back to you. Just ask your closest family and friends the honest truth about what they think of you. Be prepared for the answer and most likely, it won’t even be that bad. THOUGHT NO.6:

PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

“THE WORLD’S A TERRIBLE PLACE” With so much happening in the world, you can be forgiven for wishing some things were different (like Trump ... and the state of our economy!). But it’s important not to lose perspective. “There are, and always will be, bad people, injustice, inequality and more,” explains Dr Sharp. “But there are also many good things in the world — there are people developing cures for illness; there are people who volunteer to save lives and help those in need; there are some who donate time, money and resources to wonderful charities and causes ... and this occurs every day.” Take on a more balanced view of the world, you’d develop a more positive outlook. 

Luxe sex is like a great chocolate cake — an occasional indulgence, but always amazing. So we decided to get creative. See how we went ...

I

’m sure I’m not the only one who lies in bed next to my partner mindlessly scrolling away on our phones until we both roll our separate ways and fall asleep. It ’s not that the spark is dead - it ’s just that between the late nights in the office, Netflix and Instagram, there’s a lot competing to fill the time slot that sex usually would. And now that we’ve been having sex for a while, when we do switch off our phones and roll towards one another, we’ve found a rhythm that works for both of us that is predictable but satisfying. But just like we treat ourselves to a fancy restaurant splurge every now and t hen, en, it ’s also important for couples to mix up the comfort sex for a bit of bedroom decadence. cadence. So my man and I decided to mix things up and indulge in some of the sexy xy things people do in the movies. For the benefit of all CLEO readers, we’ve rated ed each one on a “decadent dessert scale” — something we can all relate to.

1

TRIAL: NEW LINGERIE RATING: Champagne flowing down an ice sculpture. 10/10! Worth It. I felt like I was a pin-up girl from the ’50s. We both agreed it was up there among our top sexy times. The confidence boost helped, too!

2

3 TEXT JACQUELINE SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

TRIAL: SATIN SHEETS

RATING: Sticky toffee pudding — looked better than it was. It was staticky (from his leg hairs rubbing against the polyester) which made a slightly off-putting sound. Also not a fan of the obvious tell-tale signs left behind — think dark splodges of ... moisture.

4

TRIAL: CANDLES AND MASSAGE RATING: Rich, chocolate fudge cheesecake. Divine, but guiltinducing. I laid on my stomach (read: passed out) and he slathered me with massage oil and gave me a massage. I really had to work to stay awake for the sex afterward, which was oily but passionate.

TRIAL: CHAMPAGNE, STRAWBERRIES AND ROSE PETALS RATING: Ice-kacang. Fun and tasty, but ultimately a big mess. Passing strawberries between our mouths took a lot of concentration, but was fun foreplay. The champagne turned it into a light-hearted session after we both found we had rose petals stuck to our bums ... Oops!

5

THE VERDICT

New lingerie lasts longer and is a treat for the both of you. The massage was amazing, but I’ll have to return the favour, and I feel exhausted just thinking about it. Forego all the frills and if you want hot, heavy sex: Splurge on those new panties. 

You’re allowed to feel lovedup once in a while ...

If you’re in a relationship on Valentine’s Day, good for you! Here are the ways you can focus all your energy on him on 14 Feb.

I

t ’s that time of year again when overpriced roses, teddy bears and enough chocolate to bring on near instant diabetes make an appearance. As a rule, most guys aren’t into the whole Valentine’s Day thing — it feels like a marketing exercise disguised as a heart-laced guilt trip designed to liberate cash from our wallets on commodities that are as limited as they are clichéd. And technically, it kinda is. Granted, this is a highly cynical view to take — kinda like when anyone with the last name Kardashian says they wrote a book. But you know what? Because we love — nay, adore — the women in our lives, we do it. We buy those mushy cards and send the roses that cost ten times on this day than they did a day before or a day after. And to hell with dignity — we even willingly carry stuffed animals on public transport. We cast reservations aside because we want you to feel like the girl in the fairytale, even if the story doesn’t do it for us. The point is, we know what to do for the women in our lives on February 14. It ’s been drummed into us and lessons have been learnt. But what about us? Do you know what men really want on this day where love is celebrated? What we really, really want? Thought that might get your attention ...

The fact that you went to all that trouble is an extra turn on for him since it ’ll make him feel tingly and special. And not just in one part of his body.

as much of a cliché as roses, but you still like them right? I know he does. I’m talking about lingerie — a sexy little new ensemble. But here’s the important thing — don’t spend money on an item purely on the grounds that he will like it. You need to love it and feel confident as well as comfortable in it. Because any man who loves you will know that you’re at your sexiest when you feel confident and comfortable. In other words, pass on the nurse or secretary ensemble, unless of course you’re into role-playing ... Then, by all means.

THE BIG FINISH

Truth be told, any of the above gifts would result in him having a Valentine’s Day to remember. Yes, shallow, willydriven creatures that we are, satisfaction is that simple. But if you really want to blow his mind, here’s the deal — book a dinner at a fancy hotel then secretly sort a room for the night too. Speaking from personal experience, there are few more pleasurecharged experiences than going from dessert to ‘dessert ’. And no, he won’t have any problem walking out the next day in the same clothes. If he does, it's probably because he just wants to spend another night in the same clothes. 

To see each athlete as an individual and to find the silver lining in every situation. This is what I try to instill in the athletes as well. 

“If [an athlete] believes she can achieve something, then she’s most likely correct ... It’s also essential that they don’t over-complicate things and stay in the present.”

What ’s the biggest misconception of your job? That something is wrong with you if you need my help. Improving your performance doesn’t just mean training your muscles and honing your skills; it also means pushing yourself physically and mentally beyond the limits you’ve set. What’s one word or phrase do the athletes associate you with? If you speak to my bowlers, it ’s probably “KISS: Keep it simple, stupid” or “one shot ”. It ’s essential that athletes don’t overcomplicate things, and stay in the present moment and focusing on what needs to be done here and now, to deliver the best performance. What makes an athlete mentally strong? Resilience — having the ability to soldier on immense pressure

his is it. Today’s the day. The day everyone’s finally going to realise you’ve been faking it this whole time. That you got to where you are by sheer luck, lying, or both. And man are they going to be mad. If that could be a recording of your thought process then it ’s a no-brainer: you’re a human being. In particular, a high achieving woman. Because that particular strain of self-doubt has a name — imposter syndrome— and it ’s practically an epidemic among smart, young women.

TEXT MEG MASON PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

“I’M NOT GOOD ENOUGH” Imposter syndrome is described as a “collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist even in the face of information that indicates that the opposite is true” — making short work of the real talent, hard work, character or stone-cold qualifications that got you where you are, and leaving you feeling like your success so far is a fluke, with exposure just around the corner. “It’s even more common than most of us realise,” says Dr Joann Lukins, a performance psychologist. “But it ’s often unspoken, which can leave us with the sense that we’re the only ones who struggle with that seed of self doubt even though actual evidence doesn’t support that.”

NO-ONE IS PERFECT Re-routing your desire for perfection in every aspect of life to a quest for excellence or plain old good enough instead also helps, as does articulating your anxieties to the right people. “Get your fans around you,” says Immik. “I'm talking people who are really invested in your success. They know who you really are and will help you become your real self.” Because, as recovering imposters ourselves, one thing is for sure: every single person is making it up as they go along no matter how calm, confident and in control they look on the outside.

IT’S ALL IN YOUR MIND Thankfully, this negative cycle of self-talk can be managed — with a little mindfulness. “You can’t do anything about it unless you notice when it’s happening. Once you notice the messages you're sending yourself, you will naturally begin to challenge them,” says Dr Lukins. “It’s like when you get into a car and there’s a song on the radio you hate. out of the environment you’re in,” says Kerr. “This usually generates a new feeling, and reinforces the sense that you’re in control of your life.” Taking a mental and physical step back also gives you a chance to weigh what you’re thinking and feeling against what’s actually, you know, true. If you’re prone to firing a knee-jerk email, take a tea break before hitting send. “So often we say things to ourselves that just aren’t true,” says Dr Lukins. “When you’re thinking, ‘Oh, that friend hasn’t called me back because she hates me,’ consider an alternative explanation. how to eat

like a man

... and still look like a woman! Now, enjoy your food and not pack on the pounds — like those dudes who eat and stay forever thin.

i

f we told you that the secret to looking skinny was to ‘eat like a man’, you'd probably think that we were pulling your damn leg. But yes — the trick to burning fat is to simply eat like a man. This doesn't mean that you should be wolfing down the same portions as your man, as that would have the opposite effect. Instead, consume more animal proteins on the days that you’re hitting the weights (that was our January #fitgoals right?) and eating a more vegetarian-inspired palate on cardio-intensive workouts, travel or rest days. It's also more advisable to drink more water to curb those hunger pangs and getting tired from dehydration, something us gals are more susceptible too. Also, eat constantly — this helps boost the metabolism by keeping it high and burning calories. Here are more ways for you to choose from ...

106

CLEO.COM.MY FEBRUARY 2017

DON’T STARVE YOURSELF! Most unhealthy and disordered eating habits (both in underweight and overweight people) stem from a feeling of restraint, or ‘missing out ’, that builds up until you finally crack and binge on all those nasi lemaks or a family packet of Twisties. Starving yourself is the worst thing you can do, if you want to manage your weight. Going on any kind of strict diet is doomed failure because you’re unlikely to stick to it in the long term, so when you go back to normal eating habits, you’ll actually put on more kilos.

EAT WHEN HUNGRY, NOT STRESSED

FACTS CROSS-CHECKED BY NUTRITIONIST KIRSTEN BECK PHOTOGRAPHY SHUTTERSTOCK

Don’t let yourself get hungry! You make far worse food choices when your belly is empty (ever been grocery shipping when you’re starving?). The trick is to eat before you actually get too hungry, that way you’ll make healthier food selections. Women often use food to help cope with stress, which is problematic because the foods we tend to eat when frazzled are typically sweet, salty and fatty, which can actually worsen your stress levels. So if you do need to stress-eat, choose quality foods instead.

SWAP SNACKS FOR A REAL MEAL Men are far more likely to eat three proper meals a day than women. We tend to think that eating a small snack instead of a meal will help us keep our weight down, but often the opposite is true. A ‘proper’ meal gives you a range of nutrients, including protein and fibre, which make you feel full for longer. People who eat three times a day, including breakfast, are more likely to reach their nutritional requirements and manage their body weight.

“Whether you choose ‘diet’ or the full-fat version, it’s the portion size that really matters in the end.”

DITCH THE “DIET” AND “LITE” STUFF Most ‘diet’ foods are low in fat, but high in sugar, so they give you a quick burst of energy, but pretty soon leave you feeling hungry again. The other problem with these foods is that we tend to think, because they’re ‘lite’, you can eat a lot more of them, but these foods generally still add large amount of kilojoules to your diet. ‘Lite’ and ‘diet’ options are typically marketed to women and are oftened perceived by men to be ‘girlie’. Incorporating a variety of foods into your diet can be useful, but it ’s your overall intake that you need to keep in mind. Whether you choose ‘diet ’ or the full-fat version, it ’s the portion size that really matters in the end.

BANISH THE GUILT

One of the biggest difference between the way men and women view food is guilt. Most guys eat whatever they want and don’t feel bad about it afterwards, whereas women feel guilty after finishing a big meal. This is probably one of the most dangerous food habits women can have — getting stressed about the fact you’re ‘failing’ at your diet, then giving up and binging on even more stuff. Identifying what your food weaknesses are is also an important way of banishing the guilt. For example, if your binge food of choice is chocolate, it ’s pointless to vow never to eat a Kit Kat again. Eat chocolate if you feel like it, but just a small amount. Keep a block of it in the fridge — but only break off a couple of squares, then close the door and walk away (don’t take the whole thing with you!). Remember, creating a positive relationship with food can be one of the most important steps in your long-term health and body-weight management. Eating in moderation and when the timing is right is more likely to leave you feeling ‘rewarded’ instead of ‘guilty’, which eliminates the vicious cycle of binge eating and feeling stressed out. You should allow yourself to enjoy eating, instead of seeing it as a constant battle. All in all, remain balanced and remember that a nourished you is better than an unhealthy you. 

Eat nothing and you’ll feel sluggish; have a doughnut and you get a sugar rush that gives you a quick high followed by a spike of low energy after. We sure as heck didn’t know this till now. A skinny couch potato may actually have internal fat around their organs, which is particularly dangerous compared to the flab that most women get around their breasts, bum and thighs, which they may not like to look at, but doesn’t cause nearly as many health problems. A sedentary lifestyle is a huge contributor to triggering cardiovascular disease like heart attacks, stroke or high blood pressure.

The more cigarette smoke you’re exposed to, the worse it is. Puffing away, or even every second day increases chances of ending up with smoking-related health problems like lung cancer. Not to sound like a gran, but say no to both. 

alling into limbo after college has almost become another rite of passage into adulthood for us. After reading lists of life hacks and shortcuts, I thought I’d heard all the ways one could possibly get themselves back on their feet — until I spoke to Trina Teoh. Her debut book, ‘Valley Deep Into You ’, is more than just a vessel out of that oblivion. The collection of poems and haikus, a manifestation of her experiences and emotions for the past two years, explores the most intimate of ties between people — laying bare all the emotions from happiness to heartache, and everything in between.

CLEO.COM.MY FEBRUARY 2017

What ’s the story behind the title? The imagery and possible erotic connotation attached to o this phrase stood out and I wanted others to ask why. I hope it ’s working. Why poetry, and not other writing styles? It allows me to inject film and music into a tiny amount. There’s a rhythm when you read it, while a visual plays in n your head. I’ve ’ve noticed that you incorporate anatomical terms into many of these poems. Why is that? Emotion is a delicate core and it influences our behaviour. Since emotional pain easily manifests into a physical one, people relate finer to the comparison between feelings and anatomy. How has being an English “Unrequited” major influenced your writing style? It has given me the benefit of writing technically and precisely but I've learned to rely on my life's emotional and spiritual components.

Lang Leav

LANG LEAV, 36, AUTHOR , BASED IN NEW ZEALAND

I CLEO Follow Lang Leav’s latest updates on her poetry on Twitter.

How does one even rank their favourite Lang Leav book?

Can we ever expect a collection of poems that are not related to love? Definitely, at some stage. I recently finished a novel called Sad Girls and I’m also working on another project that will hopefully be out soon.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TRINA TEOH AND LANG LEAV

How different is that writing experience? Writing poetry is like dipping your toes in the pool while creating a novel is like submerging yourself into a story for a long period of time. I’ve spent the last couple of years living with these characters and going through all the emotions that they feel. In a way, it’s like these characters have their own life force and you just keep writing to see where the story brings you.

Has your writing style changed over the years? I typically write from our dining room table overlooking the sea and the forest, and with a cup of coffee in the morning. [Lang resides in New Zealand with her partner Michael Faudet, who’s also a poet].

was never one to consider myself a romantic but few years ago, while mindlessly scrolling through my Tumblr dashboard, I stumbled upon the works of Lang Leav (for the curious, her last name is pronounced Lee-Yav ). Each post then had about several thousand ‘reblogs’ but that wasn’t what kept me on for the next few hours. Instead, I found myself sucked into the rabbit hole that is her poetry, which perfectly encapsulates the emotional spectrum of those in (and out) of love. Half a decade and four books later, Lang has become the Jennifer Lawrence of the literary world — shooting up the best-selling charts in days, thousands of loyal fans at signings and each single social media posting keeping us in rapture. We recently chatted with the international best-selling author here in KL, during her ‘The Universe of Us’ book tour.

What is it about love that has you hooked, even after three books? Who you love and who loves you back determines so much in your life and it’s such an important part of the human experience. It’s such a bottomless world — one you can’t really exhaust or close — and the rich territory there continues to fascinate me.

Do you still write with pen and paper? I write on paper quite a lot, on old envelopes, letters or random clippings. Anything that can get my ideas down quickly. There’s just something about the immediacy of using a pen and notebook which I believe will always have a big role to play.

What books are you reading? The last thing I read was this gorgeous book of short stories by Alice Munro called ‘Runaway’. What else have I read? I've been reading some Liane Moriarty recently too.

And finally, what ’s the best thing about love? We write about love in a really romantic and altruistic way but I think the day-to-days are really nice. Having someone to support you and share your life with. It’s like having a slumber party every night. 

ARIES

M A R 21 — A P R 2 0

Compared to last month, February has some awesome chances of success for Aries, in both career and romance. This is the perfect time to level up at the gym, smash it with your fitness, and perhaps even consider re-investing in some technology — something you Arians are pretty upbeat with.

TAURUS

GEMINI

CANCER

Taurus will see their hard work and extra hours rewarded with bonuses and higher salaries ... Hooray! Because you’re focused on networking and your career, love just might find you in professional circles. The focus is you, so don’t be afraid to pamper yourself. Your body will thank you!

The Twins will get all the right attention and recognition at work, and it involves ka-ching. Think higher salary, bonuses and a promotion. Love will bloom for high-energy Geminis, as long as they can be patient and let it grow naturally. Finances will improve, but be sure to be a little organised.

Be more of a social butterfly this month as you may meet influential people that may help your career. You are full of positivity this month, which shows in your relationships. This is also a great time for a detox and working on your immune system. Prioritise your emotional health as well as family bonds.

A P R 21 — M AY 21

M AY 22 — J U N 2 0

LEO

J U L 21 — AU G 21

Stand proud, Leos! Diligent and compelling Lions will see job-seeking prospects perk up. All those social engagements are in full bloom for you and your plus-one, with singles potentially meeting a love interest. Thanks to Mercury, monetary success also seems to be on the up and up.

LIBRA

SCORPIO

You natural charmer. You’ll be attracting much attention this month — even maybe getting a new job opportunity just by striking up conversation at a party. Even though energy levels are on track, don't slack on your fitness. Thanks to your brilliant mind, your finances are definitely stable.

Friends and family are your best bet if you’re looking for a career change. February also sees a rapid change in your love scene, with lots of love and sexual encounters for you. Listen to your body — if it ’s been acting up, give it the rest it deserves and try natural home remedies or alternative medicine.

SAGITTARIUS

capricorn

Don’t hesitate to unwind this month — take a break from the 9-5 and attend workshops to broaden your knowledge. Be slightly more analytical with finances and all will be stable. Love may be a stone’s throw away, singles. Make time for exercise and smash your #fitgoals; your body will follow.

Be wary of work politics and use your wisdom and sensibility to avoid conflict. If you happen to fall victim, safeguard your well-being by getting close to nature and maybe even meditating. February sees Capricorns being #blessed in love with success with money. (What you wanted to hear, right?)

It’s smooth sailing for you this month, Aquarius.
