Migrants and immigration generally, are identified as being a major factor in contributing to our economic woes. This is happening across Europe with a swing to the right and support for political parties that are “nationalistic” in nature. It is crucial that there is a balanced debate on the issues and to look behind the headlines of the tabloid press and the anti-immigrant rhetoric if we are to ensure a harmonious society in the UK and ensure that London remains one of the world’s most dynamic cities and the economic powerhouse it is. In this issue, we also continue to highlight the fantastic contribution that migrants make to life in our capital city. We tell the stories of people who have sought asylum in the UK, fleeing their countries of origin due to persecution and their lives being endangered, and how they have rebuilt their lives and are contributing to our culture and society.
