A tiny solitary island, set in the vast ocean, with only a beach and a few palm trees has often been the subject of inspiration for cartoonists down through the years. However, this theme is also being used more frequently for advertising purposes. 12 |Private Island Incentives

Private islands are becoming sources of fantasy and imagination for many marketing agencies. They create the perfect stage and attract the consumer, in whom dreams and yearning are awoken and in turn suggest that these dreams could be fulfilled by the company or product in question.

Please contact us if you would like to include a private island in your advertising campaign. Also let us know if you seek an island as a film location or travel destination.

Unveil the History and Mystery of Dark Island The Thousand Islands region situated in the St. Lawrence River has to be one of the most beautiful places in North America. On Dark Island you experience more than 100 years of history. At the turn of the 20th century, Commodore Frederick G. Bourne, former director of the Singer Sewing Machine Co., commissioned the construction of a hunting lodge on the island. He appointed well-known architect Ernest Flagg, who took inspiration from the English castle described in Sir Walter Scott's Woodstock. Even the clock tower with chimes has been replicated. A certain mystery surrounds the castle on Dark Island – with its secret passageways and evocative paintings. Singer Castle is one of the very few historical castles in the United States. The most beautiful and spacious antique bedroom has been fully refurbished with stylish furniture. Sink into the imperial king-size bed and relax in the cozy upholstered furniture. Naturally, the exclusive and modern ensuite bathroom is part of your suite. You can rent the entire island exclusively for weddings, family celebrations or business conferences.

Activities: Delight in the island's unique atmosphere as you relax on the spacious terrace, in the garden, on the Skiff House beach or in the Tea Garden. Try your hand at fishing, or swim in the St. Lawrence River, where the water is as clear as glass. There are many excursions to experience in popular Alexandria Bay, Boldt Castle, the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton which houses two original speedboats once belonging to the original castle owner, Frederick Bourne. Not to be missed is a boat trip on the St. Lawrence River past the countless islands, lighthouses and villas. Montreal, Ottawa and Niagara Falls should also be visited before your holiday comes to an end.

Alexander Selkirk, the real Robinson Crusoe

he story of real-life castaway Alexander Selkirk is one of the sources for Daniel Defoe’s famous novel, Robinson Crusoe (1719), about an English sailor who is shipwrecked and spends 28 years on a remote desert island in the Caribbean Sea. Selkirk was not shipwrecked, however, but marooned on an island in the Pacific of his own free will. He spent four years alone on an uninhabited island in the Juan Fernández Archipelago, approximately 700 km off the Chilean coast. Selkirk was an adventurer from Scotland who went to sea and in 1704, after a quarrel with his captain, requested that he be put ashore on the uninhabited island of Más a Tierra where he remained until February of 1709, when he was discovered by Captain Rogers of the sailing ship Duke. Selkirk did not return to England until 1711, when he met the essayist, Richard Steele, who wrote up his story in a publication, "The Englishman" (1713). Daniel Defoe made use of this story in his novel Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk went to sea again and died at sea in

In 1983, he visited the island of Juan Fernandez to unveil a plaque in memory of his famous ancestor, and while there serenaded the bemused local villagers with his bagpipes. Location: Sanda is a privately owned island of about 400 acres, situated 1½ miles off the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, made famous by Paul McCartney, who wrote a song by the same name as a tribute to the picturesque peninsula, where he had owned a home and recording studio since the late 1960s. A frequent rendezvous for warriors, saints and smugglers, the island has a rich and diverse history and has connections with the monks of Whithorn, Robert the Bruce and the powerful MacDonald Clan. Historically referred to as 'haaven’ – or harbor – the island boasts a safe anchorage during the summer months.

Sanda Island

In recent years, this beautiful and picturesque Scottish island has enjoyed the diversification of a farm and holiday lettings, as well as the establishment of Scotland’s 4th official bird observatory. Sanda has a great variety of birdlife, with many migratory species being seen on the island. Maritime cliffs extend around much of the island. The cliff top areas are mainly either coastal grassland or heath. The waters around the island make for excellent sea fishing. Shela Beach Villa Mombasa INDIAN OCEAN

Insider tip from CondĂŠ Nast Traveller and Architectural Digest "Suspended in the hammock on the rooftop, you quickly acclimatize to the sleepy rhythm of life here: a rhythm set by the changing tides and winds." Harpers & Queen Travel Over 100 kilometers north of Mombasa, the island of Lamu is undisturbed by the turmoil of modern times and boasts a timeless serenity. Set in an archipelago of coral fringed islands, Lamu Town was a trading center for hundreds of years. Great lateen-rigged dhows sailed in from Arabia and India, buying and selling ivory and spices. The resultant blend of cultures has produced a vibrant people, the Swahili, who are rich in history and justifiably proud of their maritime tradition. To this day, there are no cars on the island and transport is by dhow, donkey or on foot. Rates: From USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 per week for the entire estate for up to 10 people. The large house has four double bedrooms and one triple ensuite bedroom. On the first floor, raised above beach level, there is an edgeless, freshwater swimming pool. It has a bar area and low comfortable baraza seats. Up the first flight of stairs is a large dining and living room, leading out onto an al fresco terrace. Another door leads onto the wooden deck over the pool and to two double bedrooms with their own private terraces. The third floor comprises three bedrooms and an open terrace. From the rooftop

The massage is given in a fluid, rhythmic motion, working with the body’s natural flow. During this therapeutic massage, different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time and full-body strokes are used to bring the body back into balance and instill a deep sense of blissful relaxation, peace, harmony and well-being. Vladi Private Islands has spent more than forty years traveling the world to visit, photograph and evaluate islands on all five continents. Because of their rarity, islands are the most attractive type of real estate and are incomparable to anything else on the real estate market. The most marketable islands comply with the following criteria: n Title Only unencumbered freehold title is acceptable n Medical Medical services must be within a 90 minute radius of the island n Fauna Can you live with indigenous animals on the chosen island (some have mosquitoes, sand-flies ...) n Flora Get familiar with trees and plants, pros and cons n Host Country Social environment, acceptance of foreign investment n Access Is the island accessible? Harbor, anchorage, landing ... n Infrastructure Water, sewage, electricity, telephone, internet n Building Permit Availability of permit, size of house, type of development n Climate Get familiar with the weather and climate conditions n Island Surroundings Neighborhood, amenities, services and also crime level

Technological advances such as solar and wind energy, prefabricated houses and desalination processes have ensured that the advantages of a mainland property over an island property have all but disappeared. Our services are not merely limited to finding you a suitable island but also include extensive and knowledgeable consultation on the bureaucratic formalities of an island purchase, detailed and informed assistance in developing your island, as well as constant attention to the various needs of our clients.
