RELAY FOR LIFE LOCAL ACTIVITIES Saturday’s Kite Flying Contest was the perfect day in all ways. The wind was up, the sun was out and so were over 30 participants. Bob O’dell won the highest flying kite and the biggest kite. Leo Roeske got first place for the best homemade kite. Ten children and about 21 adults took part. Each child was presented a ribbon for participating. At the social hour which followed the contest, all agreed that we should definitely have more get-togethers like this one. Immediate Action You will be seeing the local firefighters coming to the marina soon to plan and implement a new fire plan. We will try to send an email to you in advance of their visit.
Since we have experienced a fire and that is on our minds, this is a good time to share the following points. The Alabama Marine Police had these published right after a boat fire at the fuel dock by Shoals Creek near Killen, Alabama. The fact that only one boat was involved here and no one was hurt is fortunate. Thank you to all of you who helped contain the fire.
HOW TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS AT THE FUEL DOCK • Tie the boat to the fuel dock. • Make sure fuel lines, connections and vents are in good shape. • Turn off anything that can cause a spark, such as engines, fans and electrical equipment, and don’t smoke or strike a match while fueling. • Shut off fuel valves and extinguish open flames such as galley stoves and pilot lights. • Close windows and other openings so fumes can’t enter the boat. • Keep a fire extinguisher within reach. • Avoid static sparks by keeping the fuel-pump hose nozzle in contact with the tank opening. • Avoid spilling fuel outside the tank. • Leave some room in the tank for fuel to expand. • When finished fueling, put the cap on tightly. • Wipe any spilled fuel and properly dispose of used paper towels or rags on shore. • Open windows, ports and other openings. • If your boat has an exhaust blower, turn it on for at least four minutes before starting the engine. Also, use your nose — sniff for vapors. Have passengers leave the boat before fueling, and return only after the engine has been started after fueling. Source: Alabama Marine Police
