EL MONTE WOMEN’S CLUB met to conclude all business for the end of the 2015/16 club year on June 28th at the El Monte Community Center. The meeting began with a Call to Order by President Cathi Eredia who welcomed all.

Parliamentarian Mary Jo Kolakoski read the Bylaws and Standing Rules changes which were then voted on, adopted or defeated, in readiness for printing in the 2016/17 yearbook.

Scholarship Co-chair Jane Myring (Co-chair is Alicia Rodriguez) reported on a very successful year, due to the extremely successful Scholarship Dinner.

The El Monte Women’s Club is also committed to paying membership dues, in support of the El Monte/ South El Monte Chamber of Commerce and the El Monte Historical Museum.

Traditionally in Nov., ea. year, the club hosts the Museum Tea and all members donate the refreshments.

Funding for these projects are provided by donations and fundraisers. The first fundraiser for the new club year, 2016-17, will be the “Von’s Luncheon” was held on Friday, July 8th, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in front of the Vons’ Credit Union. A small donation of $5.00 will give you a delicious lunch of spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and drink provided by Sir Pizza N’ Chicken, 10300 Lower Azusa Road, El Monte. The ladies of the club will also have available for dessert, a variety of sweets, such as cookies and brownies. Stop by for a delicious lunch while helping to fund the next years philanthropies. Politics: Drop by Drop ANTHONY R. FELLOW, Ph.D., Professor of Communications, Director of The Florence Program Department of Communications, College of Communications, California State University, Fullerton 800 State College Blvd., Fullerton, CA 92831 Every Fourth of July my thoughts go back to the family party at Uncle Tony’s cottage on Connecticut’s Housatonic River in Indian Welles. There was nothing luxurious about the cottage.

But we loved it. When trains came by during the night, the beds in the three-bedroom cottage, Honeymoon Cottage to be exact, not only shook but sometimes roll to the other side of the room.

The cottage was about 30 minutes from Grandma Fellow’s house on Honeyspot Road in Stratford, but we packed enough Italian food to serve an army, and everyone was happy driving along the Connecticut coast.

We were always happy in Grandma’s presence. She had raised eight children after her husband’s early death at 50. Grandfather was the

politician who ran the town.

It was said children in the community lined up and followed him to city hall each day. She was made of love and became my hero in life.

Whenever the four brothers and sisters of the Fellow clan got together with what seemed hundreds cousins, it was a party with more food and fun than one could imagine. More importantly, there was a lot of love, probably enough to fill the length and depth of the Housatonic River.

I still have the wonderful pictures in my mind of my Aunts Kay, Buddy, Vera, and Ginny sitting on the lounge chairs at the lake. Uncle Tony would be helping us with the oars to propel his rowboat, and Uncle Bill would be teaching us all to ski with his motorboat. My

Dad and his oldest brother Norman could be found discussing World War II with the brothers in law. That was okay, for they were part of the greatest generation, the kind of people who made America great.

What I wouldn’t give for another party at cottage with all of them. It was quite a family. It was quite a remarkable love. I wish everyone could experience that love this July 4.

‘Time Jockey’ Duty Calls

Recognition ... A couple of weeks ago I was leaving the market when I noticed someone lying on the sidewalk. It was approximately 10:30AM and the person was lying face down on the sidewalk. It appeared some fluids were being released from his mouth but he remained motionless. It was a bright morning and the person was easily visible to the many cars passing by on the busy thoroughfare. I was driving my car when I noticed the lifeless body on the sidewalk and immediately backed up and re-parked my car. I started walking towards the person but I remembered that some firemen were entering the market as I was exiting it.

So I returned to the market and tracked down the first fireman I saw. There was a paramedic in the deli area and I went over and told him what I had come across. I was hopeful he would come with me to check on the unconscious man but I thought for sure that he would tell me to call 911. Instead he asked me to show him the way and we quickly walked over to the still motionless man. The paramedic gently shook the man and he immediately awoke, still uncertain where he was at or what was happening. The paramedic spoke calmly to the man, asking him questions on his name and where he lived. The man provided his best answers and the paramedic started asking if he was injured or ill, but for the most part he was still confused. Finally, the man stated that he had been drinking the night before, was homeless and his legs became too weak to continue. Shortly thereafter the police arrived on the scene and instantly recognized the person in question. They said they would take it from there and the paramedic could return to his team. The paramedics name was Brian Campbell, San Marino Fire Department, engine #791.This story seems like just one of the basic duties of a fireman or paramedic but to act without knowing the details of a situation and to calmly work to aid someone in need is much more than a normal duty. Paramedic Campbell, thanks for acting so quickly and professionally in caring for those in the community

Founder… The Sociedad Funeraria de San Gabriel (The Funeral Society of San Gabriel) was a fraternal organization group whose benefits included assistance in paying for funeral costs of members of the society upon their death. Juan Hernandez (1896-1949) was the founder of the Funeraria and upon his death in 1949 the members of the organization collected donations for a monument to show their gratitude and thanks. The monument was dedicated to his memory and devotion and is located in the cemetery at historic San Gabriel Mission where Hernandez rests in peace….

Numerous RHS Key Club service and fund raising programs are linked to PTP – the Kiwanis “Pediatric Trauma Program.”

But exactly what is “Pediatric Trauma” and why did another Kiwanis-affiliated unit - the Kiwanis Cal-NevHa Foundation, adopt it as an ongoing program in 1994?

Pediatric trauma is a technical term for unintentional injuries to children under the age of 14.

Such injuries: • are the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.; • kill more children every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide; • are unintentional and 90% preventable - - but presently result in funerals for the children of 9000 families in the United States each year plus several times that number who require medical treatment due to preventable causes.

These statistics spotlight the serious need for edu-

cation and training in the areas of pediatric trauma and injury prevention. As a result, the Kiwanis Cal-NevHa Foundation developed a threefold mission statement for the program: • We work to prevent pediatric trauma by providing community outreach, education and materials to children and families living in the communities we share; • We utilize the knowledge and expertise of our partner hospitals to identify projects the Kiwanis family can undertake to address the issue of Pediatric Trauma; and • We improve the outcomes for children who experience pediatric trauma through our Kiwanis Doctor

Program, which provides advanced medical training to medical personnel and first responders throughout our District.

Today the Foundation supplies resources, referrals and in selected cases funding.

Definition and execution of related programs – whether fundraising, education, or direct service to disabled children – rests with local K-family groups, including Key Clubs. There are extensive support materials on the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation and Kiwanis International websites, but individual groups can also develop their own program ideas.

27th Annual BOSCO TECH Golf Classic is July 15th

Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) will host its 27th Annual Golf Classic at the Montebello Golf Course on Friday, July 15, 2016. All tournament proceeds benefit the Tech’s tuition assistance and athletic programs.

Tournament registration is $125 on or before June 30, and $150 after that date.

24 Schools Set to Participate in SGV Shootout

On Saturday the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox…in Boston…21-2.

If it was a football game the final score would be equivalent to 82-14. It was a blowout on an epic scale.

It doesn’t happen very often and to think that it happened to the Red Sox in Fenway Park is almost unbelievable.

But it did happen.

So my question is do you forget a blowout like that after it happens to you?

You might be able to get some revenge but do you ever forget it.

In the old days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I played flag football at Columbia Elementary in El Monte. We used to play other schools in the district.

Schools like New Lexington, Cortada, Potrero, Wilkerson, Kranz, Norwood, Mulhall, Gidley, Durfee, Baker, LeGore, Frank Wright, Rio Hondo, and Cleminson (I’m sure I’m missing one or two).

I remember these contests in basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and softball as be-ing something a little less than bloodsport. The rivalries were strong, we literally hated (in the sporting sense) the other school.

We had our wins, we had our losses, and we had games where everything went wrong. One game was played against Cortada (our coach didn’t show up and we coached our-selves) and we lost 48-0.

The game was played at Cortada and nothing went right. Their fans were there, stu-dents and some parents, and they all laughed and mocked us. It was horrible…so horri-ble that I still remember the score, the place, the school, and the feelings of what went on over 40 years ago.

As the years rolled we eventually beat Cortada… never 48-0…but we beat them. And while it felt good it never took away the sting of the time they humiliated us.

The Red Sox players said all the right things after the Angels beat them 21-2. It’s just one game, they’ll be back tomorrow, and all the usual…but do you think they’ll truly for-get being beat by that score at home?

In February the Dodgers signed Sierra to a 6-year $30-million deal. Since then he’s been horrible and was removed (“outrighted”) off the 40man roster. But to do this Sierra had to clear waivers, which means every other MLB team has a chance to sign him. But none did…So the Dodgers are still stuck with Sierra and are still on the hook to pay him the remaining $23.2 million on his contract.

Temple City ASA Advances to Nationals The Temple City 14-Under ASA girls softball team, thanks to a strong showing in the Lancaster Regionals, will advance to the ASA Nationals that begin on July 23.

The Peterson Principle

When the dust settles the Lakers end up with Timofey Mozgov, Luol Deng, and Jordan Clarkson. That and a couple of hundred bucks will get you to the playoffs.

The only way the Lakers are getting to the postseason is if they buy a ticket. Nobody was looking at Mozgov for ten million let alone 64. This guy couldn’t even get on the court last year for Cleveland.

He’s a backup center. Yeah, the Lakers are paying $16 million a year for a backup.

And what’s really concerning is that Mozgov was their first call. When the clock struck midnight on July 1, Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss were on the phone to Mozgov’s agent. They didn’t call Al Horford first or Miami’s Hassan Whiteside.

No, they went straight after Mozgov.

It’s gotten so bad around Lakerland lately that the feeling was that if Whiteside and Horford turned the Lakers down, (which they would have) then Mozgov would already be gone. And my feeling is so what? So you miss out on a 30-year old backup that is coming off knee surgery and averaged six points and four rebounds last year.

What’s the problem?

The problem is that Jim Buss has no idea what he’s doing. Do you know that Buss once told reporters that he would sign LeBron James in 2014, Kevin Love in 2015 and Kevin Durant in 2016?

Durant wouldn’t even agree to talk to the Lakers. Oops!

Apparently, what Buss really meant was that his big three was Mozgov, Deng, and Clarkson.

The Lakers had to sign Clarkson at that point after everybody else turned them down. The embarrassment of losing their own player would have been too much to bear, so they coughed up their 50 million.

Luol Deng is good...well was good...about five years ago. His best days were in Chicago and he was pedestrian at best last year with Miami averaging 12 points per game - which was his lowest since his rookie season back in 2004-’05. In the Lakers eyes, pedestrian is worth $72 million.

The truth is the Lakers wouldn’t have given Mozgov a second thought if they would have drafted center Jalil Okafor last June instead of the erratic, immature D’Angelo Russell. You don’t like Okafor? Don’t think he’s ready? Ok, well he averaged over 17 points and seven rebounds last year – nearly three times as many points as Mr. Mozgov.

The CIF-Southern Section announced its inaugural class of MVP (Most Valuable Player) Athletic Directors for this recently past school year. Among the locals honored were long time Monrovia Athletic Director, Randy Bell, La Puente’s Jim Lane and Gladstone’s Chuck Shore.

“CIF is proud to recognize and congratulate the AD’s for the 2015-16 school year,” CIFF-SS Commissioner, Rob Wigod.

The MVP AD program was launched in August 2015 in an effort to offer professional growth and networking opportunities for the section’s Athletic Directors.

“I want to thank and salute our athletic directors who achieved MVP AD status in this first year of our MVP AD program,” said Wigod. “I truly appreciate their hard work, dedication, and professionalism in devoting the extra me and effort that was necessary for them to complete this certification. They are outstanding leaders and excellent examples of educators who make a positive impact on the student athletes that we are all so fortunate to serve.

Pasadena Unified Announces Selection for Washington Middle School Principal

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) is pleased to announce the selection of Shannon Malone as principal of Washington Middle School, the STEAM Magnet Academy.

“I am pleased to promote Ms. Malone to lead Washington STEAM Magnet,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald. “With her proven track record of effecting sustainable conditions for student achievement, she is qualified to lead the students, staff and community of Washington Middle School and its STEAM magnet to further a culture of success that creates opportunities for every student.”

Ms. Malone has served as Principal of Cleveland Elementary since 2010 and led the school’s focus into science, technology, engineer-

ing, art, and math (STEAM).

Under her leadership, the school built two campus gardens that are used to enhance classroom instruction and to engage families and the community in student learning. The Cleveland campus also underwent major construction during Ms. Malone’s tenure.

“It has been my honor to serve as Principal of Cleveland Elementary, where the faculty and community came together to create a STEAM focus for students,” said Ms. Malone. “I am thrilled to bring this insight to Washington, where together we will make positive changes to strengthen the capabilities of our students and prepare them to be successful in high school, college, and beyond.”

California Women Veterans Leadership Council Recently Established to Support All Women Veterans in the State

As our country celebrates its 240th year of independence, Americans remember our men and women who have served in the Armed Forces to protect and secure the very freedoms our founders sought in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.

Women are now and have always been an important part of securing our freedoms. Two million women nationwide, and 170,000 women in California served in the Armed Forces. However, many do not identify as Veterans. For this reason and others, women are not inclined to access the state and federal Veterans benefits they earned at the same rates as their male counterparts.

According to a Veterans Affairs (VA) Women’s Health program overview, the VA has found that women Veterans underutilize VA

care, largely due to a lack of knowledge about VA benefits and available services and their eligibility to them.

Women also experience gaps in services as cited in a women Veteran study conducted by Disabled American Veterans (DAV), which found current reintegration services fail to embrace alternative family structures.

To address this issue, women Veterans, in partnership with Army OneSource, the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), and the Women Veterans Alliance, formed a new California Women Veterans Leadership Council. “The CalWVLC is the first opportunity for women Veterans in California to collaborate with each other and use our leadership skills to encourage our continued success through education, advocacy and mentorship. It is exactly

what we need to have a collective voice to make sure women who have served are never again forgotten and the benefits we earned are available to us today and in the future.” Kristine Hesse, MSgt, U.S. Air Force (Retired), Director of Women Veterans Outreach, National Veterans Foundation.

The mission of the Council is to improve the quality of life of California’s women Veterans, including aspects of their education, career success, physical health, and mental wellbeing. “This Council is long overdue and will work to elevate issues women Veterans face and create positive change for them in California,” stated Melissa Washington, Navy Veteran and Chair of the California Women Veterans Leadership Council.

The Council plans to promote the needs of women Veterans across California and heighten awareness of the issues faced by women Service members and Veterans. The Council will accomplish this by creating a statewide structure for information sharing and leadership in order to address the accountability and effectiveness of services

and highlight exceptional programs. “The creation of this Council is a very important step to elevate the needs of women Veterans here in the state and helps to ensure that women Veteran leaders communicate with one another about important issues,” stated Lindsey Sin, CalVet Deputy Secretary for Women Veterans Affairs and advisor to the Council. The Council will spend their first year educating themselves on the issues that currently affect women Veterans such as increased suicide rates, military sexual trauma, access to female- designated primary care providers, affordable family housing and employment opportunities.

The Council members currently include 18 women Veterans from across California and are scheduled to meet monthly in order to identify statewide solutions to improve the lives of women Veterans. Veterans Affairs, California Department of Veterans Affairs; and Advisor Patricia Jackson-Kelley, Lt Col, Army (Retired), Los Angeles Military and Veteran Affairs Commissioner and American Legion Department of California Women Veteran Outreach Coordinator. “When forming the Council we intentionally set out to gather a diverse group of women Veteran leaders.

The Council is meant to represent all women Veterans regardless of branch, duty status, rank, service era and discharge status,” stated Camara Rajabari, California State Community Support Coordinator, Army OneSource.

Motion Picture Academy Invites Diversity

Over the past few years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – most familiar to the public as the organization which annually awards Oscars – has been criticized for a lack of diversity in its award nominees. Responding to that pressure this past January, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs promised “inclusion in all of its facets: gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.”

True to her word, the Academy has followed through, just announcing invitations were issued to a diverse group of 683 new members for 2016.

Demographics of the new members include: 238 international members representing 59 countries; 46% female; 41% people of color. The list includes 28 Oscar winners and 98 Oscar nominees.

The invitations came from all 19 branches of the Academy, ranging from Actors,

Directors, and Designers, and Writers to Executives, Associates and Members-atLarge.

Familiar names include: Idris Elba, Mary J. Blige, America Ferrera, Mark Rylance, Anika Noni Rose, Regina King, James Hong, Will.i.am, Kate Beckinsale, and Tina Fey, among others.

Three sets of siblings are among those invited: Keenen Ivory Wayans (Directors & Writers), Marlon Wayans (Actors), and Damon Wayans, Jr. (Actors); James Murdoch (Executives) and Lachlan Murdoch (Executives); and transgender siblings Lana Wachowski (Directors) and Lilly Wachowski (Directors).

Will this new addition to the membership make a difference? It appears to be a first step in the right direction. For 2016 these invitations will increase female representation by 2% (to 27% overall) and representa-

tion of people of color by 3% (to 11% overall). Boone Isaacs emphasizes the Academy has “a long-term commitment to welcoming extraordinary talent reflective of those working in film today.” Her statement recognizes the fact that If real progress is to be made, the diversity challenge doesn’t fall solely upon the Academy.

The upper ranks of the American film industry skew overwhelmingly male and white, as documented in a 2015 study by UCLA’s Bunche Center. So, if change is to be seen regarding nominees for awards, it will first need to begin at the studio level, with boards hiring and/or promoting a more diverse selection of executives. And, casting directors, film directors, and producers need to think more “outside the box” in terms of ethnicity, gender, and age when selecting movie talent.

Data Security

Chances are that you have a computer. If you don’t use a computer but have a credit card you have your information stored digital by stores where you shop. Data security has been a very big issue lately. Whether it’s the names of people who use the adult site Ashley Madison or if you simply just used your credit or debit card at Target your information was leaked. According to Clearinghouse more than a 227,052,199 people data has been stolen. That’s more than half the U.S. population.

Anthem Blue Cross suffered a data breach in February 2015. They lost information that included names, social security numbers, date of birth and more.

That’s enough for a hacker to steal your identity. In June 2014 the U.S. government Office of Personnel Management was hacked stealing 4 million current and former employee’s information.

Celebrities can be hacked, too. In August 2014, 200 photographs of celebrities were leaked from there

iPhones. These photos where very private and hurt their reputations. In November 2014 Sony suffered a data breach where their emails were leaked and private information of their employees and even unreleased movies from the studio got leaked. The breach took over 100 terabytes of data.

The biggest breach was in December of 2013 when Target stores were hacked.

The hacker stole 70 million

peoples credit and debit card information.

There are dozens of people being hacked every hour and you can be a victim, too.

There isn’t much you can do but hope these corporations handle the data you give them with better security. If you don’t have a computer you’re still at risk. You have a bank account, maybe you don’t use the debit or credit card but your banking information is still stored

on a computer at the bank.

So far no bank has been breached so we are still safe.

Just remember that every time you use a credit card at a store, they store your card information so maybe next time it’s maybe better to pay with cash.

The Purge: Election Year

Election year is this year and in “The Purge” Senator Roan is running to shut down the NFRA’s annual

purge after a young girl, Charlie Roan survived the annual night of lawlessness that took the lives of

her family members. As a presidential candidate, Roan is determined to end the yearly tradition of blood lust once and for all. When her opponent the NFRA hatch a deadly scheme, the senator finds herself trapped on the streets of Washington, D.C., just as the latest Purge gets underway.

Now, it’s up to Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), her head of security, to keep her alive during the next 12 hours of mayhem where all crime is legal including murder.

“The Purge: Election Year” was directed by James DeMonaco. DeMonaco also directed the original “The Purge” and “The Purge: Anarchy.” Demonaco also wrote all the “The Purge” movies, he is also known for writing the movie “The Negotiator.” Frank Grillo is the only actor to return from “The Purge: Anarchy.” He plays Leo Barnes, a man who lost his family to The Purge and is looking to end it. Elizabeth Mitchell plays Senator Charlie Roan who is running for president this election, and her family was killed in The Purge. Other actors include Raymond J. Barry playing NFRA Leader, Mykelti Williamson, Joseph Julian Soria, and Betty Gabriel in

This year’s Purge uses the election as its theme. The poster kind of makes fun of Trumps slogan “Making America Great.” The film to me has a great concept. The movie was low budget, but exceeded my expectations.

Yes there is violence and there is action. The acting is good and the story is strong, but the execution is lacking.

Perhaps it’s time for James DeMonaco to let someone else try making a Purge movie. Grade C- Rated R
