A MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

In the 2021-2022 season, the Mid-Texas Symphony came back with a roar, and our audience roared back. This was our first complete in-person season as a full orchestra in three years, as the 2019-2020 season was cut short by the onset of COVID, and the 2020-2021 season was a hybrid of digital and in-person concerts with reduced forces. We could not have wished for a better return.

Fittingly, the September concert opened and closed with two of the best pieces about triumph over adversity, “Finlandia” and “Scheherazade.” The October concert celebrated the diversity that makes America so unique by showcasing four composers who combined multiple perspectives to create powerful works: Gershwin, Korngold, Montgomery, and Hanson. The holiday concert introduced new twists on old standards, such as Duke Ellington’s take on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and “Little Bolero Boy,” a la Maurice Ravel. The February program took full advantage of the Brauntex’s theatrical capabilities with Stravinsky’s iconic “Soldier’s Tale” and its companion piece, “Dead Elvis.” In April, the Force was very strong at the sold-out “Star Wars and Beyond,” and the season closed with the symphonic blockbuster, “Pines of Rome.”

We performed with many outstanding guest artists including oboist Jennifer Berg Matthews, violinist Charles Yang, tenor Rick Novak, Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen, conductor Israel Getzov, narrator Dave Ferguson, dancer Danielle Campbell Steans, and pianist Rachel Cheung.

We also connected with many young people this season. The Young People’s Concert in September was live-streamed and made available to schools for two weeks thereafter. We also performed two in-person Young People’s Concerts in April. At the season finale, we collaborated with the Suzuki string students from the Texas Lutheran University Community Music Academy as well as our musicians’ private studios, and with the brass students from the TLU Music Department.

I am indebted to our wonderful orchestra, board, and staff, who brought MTS back so successfully. And to our long-time patrons, THANK YOU for coming back. And to our new patrons, WELCOME to the MTS family. I am looking forward to celebrating with all of you the only thing that could top this season: our 45th anniversary season ahead!

Warmly, Akiko

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

The Mid-Texas Symphony Society is proud to share this Annual Report with you. When we planned the 2021-2022 season, we thought that significant COVID accommodations were behind us. However, the surge that began in July 2021 forced us once again to make changes to how we presented the season. Nevertheless, our patrons and funders were with us every step of the way, confirming that this is a truly collaborative enterprise.

Music Director Akiko Fujimoto guided us through a season that was a mixture of pieces by well-known composers and those that are lesser known, whether contemporary or from centuries past. Guest artist Charles Yang dazzled us at our October concert, and all of us were delighted to think about the composers that might have influenced the film composer John Williams at our sold-out "Star Wars and Beyond" concert in April.

The COVID surge that began in the late summer of 2021 caused us to cancel the children’s concerts planned for September and October. We live-streamed a performance of the September concert that went to area school districts and made a recording of the concert available for two weeks to the districts. However, we were able to return to a live in-person children’s concert in April 2022 with our "Star Wars and Beyond" concert. All of us were happy to once again look out at a sea of excited children.

Both Guild chapters held balls presenting 8 debutantes and escorts in New Braunfels and 18 debutantes and escorts in Seguin. The hard work of these young people and their parents raised $50,778 to benefit the operations of the Symphony.

Throughout this year, we benefitted from generous contributions by our patrons and the support of foundations and governmental entities such as Kronkosky Foundation, the Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Lutheran University, the Cities of Seguin and New Braunfels, and many others.

Thank you to each and every one of you! We love presenting concerts, and your support tells us you love it too.

Sincerely,

EDUCATION AND FAMILY OUTREACH

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

For 34 years, patron contributions have allowed the Symphony to provide free orchestral concerts to fourth- and fifth-grade students in Comal and Guadalupe Counties. Our norm has been to present those concerts in September and October. As we prepared for the 20212022 season, we expected to return to this tradition. However, the pandemic once again reared its ugly head. Because of a significant surge in COVID cases, we cancelled our fall in-person children’s concerts.

We live-streamed an orchestra performance of the September concert and then made a recording of the live-stream available for teachers and students for a two week period. Six hundred elementary students viewed this performance.

Fortunately, the pandemic abated; and we were able to once again return to our live in-person children’s concert in April 2022 with our "Star Wars & Beyond" concert. 1,670 fifth graders from New Braunfels, Comal, and Seguin Independent School Districts filled the New Braunfels Civic Center in two seatings. What a wonderful return to our tradition after a two-year hiatus!

SYMPHONY GUILD

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

This season the Symphony Guild was able to begin to return to its normal activities supporting the work of the Symphony. Every year, the Guild raises funds to benefit the Symphony through poinsettia sales and the presentation of young women as debutantes at balls held in the two communities of Seguin and New Braunfels. The debutantes and their escorts serve as ushers at concerts, and Guild members provide hospitality for the musicians over the concert weekends. The debs and their escorts served as ushers for the concerts, but Guild members were not able to provide hospitality until the spring because of concerns about COVID during the first half of the season.

The New Braunfels Guild chapter returned to serving as docents for the in-person children’s concert held in April 2022. That Guild chapter also sponsored a cotillion program aimed at middle-school students that brought the students to concerts and provided them with basic etiquette lessons.

In 2021-2022, poinsettia sales in both communities raised over $7,000. The New Braunfels Guild chapter presented a class of eight debs, and the Seguin Guild chapter presented a class of eighteen. Both balls were held on the same evening, and together the two chapters were able to raise and contribute $50, 778 to benefit the Symphony.

2021-22 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT ANN HODGES

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

Ann Hodges, pictured in the center above, has been a Seguin resident for the past 24 years. She returned to Texas as a retired teacher, having taught in California and New Mexico. A widow, she attended her fortieth high school reunion in Monahans; and there re-connected with a former high school sweetheart, Jim Hodges from Seguin. After moving to Seguin, she read an article about the Mid-Texas Symphony and began attending concerts. Ann has been a season ticket subscriber ever since.

Ann joined the Seguin Guild chapter in 2008 and got her start as Hospitality Chair in 2009.Ann has been organizing the feeding of Symphony performers at rehearsals and concerts ever since. When she took on the job of Chair, there were no guidelines about how to put together the food that the musicians needed and wanted.Over the years, Ann developed those guidelines. She coordinates with other Seguin Guild chapter members to provide healthy food, snacks, drinks, and desserts backstage when the musicians take their breaks. Annie is especially known for her stellar cookie baking skills.

After over a decade of providing this service, she has come to be friends with many of the musicians. She especially enjoys the September concert when she welcomes the musicians back after the summer off. As she sits backstage, she keeps her ears open, noting the transformation that occurs from the first rehearsal on Saturday morning to the performance of the concert on Sunday afternoon. The Mid-Texas Symphony is so lucky to have this dedicated volunteer as a member of our MTS family.

2021 CHRISTMAS DINNER HONOREE EITHNE GOETZ

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

Starting in 2019, the Mid-Texas Symphony began a tradition of honoring those who have made a significant contribution to the longevity of the Symphony. Eithne Goetz can truly be called a Founding Mother of the Mid-Texas Symphony. A native of Ireland, Eithne has lived in Seguin since 1976, the wife of Dr. Joe Goetz. Eithne became involved with the Symphony when she read an article about Anita Windecker and her fellow pioneers, announcing the Symphony’s formation. Eithne decided she wanted to be a part of this new organization and joined the Symphony Guild. In fact, she was the hospitality chair for a champagne reception following the initial Symphony performance.

Shortly after that, she joined the Symphony as a member of the violin section, and played until 2018. Since 1994, she has been the organization’s Music Librarian. A symphony’s librarian is an essential member of the staff, responsible for all aspects of the musical scores. She maintains the scores we own; obtains the scores we rent; distributes and then collects scores from the musicians; keeps track of all music that is played; and monitors compliance with copyright and ASCAP/BMI rules.

While doing all this, Eithne also helps layout the concert program book and tracks ad sales. She has a long history of being involved in the Symphony’s annual children’s concerts. Eithne continues to be actively involved in the Seguin chapter of the Guild, taking on myriad duties. And she is a financial contributor to the Symphony. There is no aspect of the Mid-Texas Symphony that has not benefitted from Eithne’s touch.

2021-22 FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Mid-TexasSymphonySociety,Inc.|2021-22AnnualReport

The Fiscal Year 2022 and the 2021-22 Season are Year 1 of a Three Year plan adopted by the Board in June of 2021. Our goal for year one was financial solvency. To achieve financial solvency, we must have a zero net revenue for the entire year. This goal would be the biggest challenge the organization has faced in several years especially with the lingering COVID-19 pandemic.

The Society ended the fiscal year with a slight surplus. This success is due to record-breaking ticket sales, increased patron contributions, and grant funding (both foundational and disaster relief). This year, we did not use general endowment account funds to supplement cash flow.

This report provides data that supports and illustrates the financial activities during the Fiscal Year 2022 and the 202122 season.
