Business Connection FEBRUARY 2014

2014 Board of Directors Executive Committee

As I write this month’s newsletter article there is a severe winter weather advisory underway. And although we’re hearty souls, most of us are likely ready for some warmer weather. The only time I’ve heard someone talk about being warm this week was in reference to our amazing 62nd Annual Celebration on January 22nd - with over 500 attendees, we heated up the Marriott with an evening of fun and camaraderie. Unfortunately, the Milwaukee Brewers Racing Sausage that I sponsored got scorched — even after my pre-race motivational speech for the 8-foot tall Brat. I am convinced that the winning sausage was on some type of PED!

This year’s Annual Celebration was truly special. With 15 food and beverage vendors, a 100+ package silent auction, bean bags and sumo wrestling, there was a little something for everyone. There are so many people to thank when such a phenomenal event occurs: staff, the planning committee, sponsors and the volunteers who put their efforts together for a great night. I can’t wait to see what next year’s theme will be as each years’ event committee attempts to top the previous years’ efforts. If you have not attended our Annual Celebration event over the past few years, I encourage you to attend in 2015 to see for yourself!

Chamber Staff

Dear Chamber Members,

Van Nutt, Executive Director Brenda Delabarre, Membership Services Lisa DuChateau, Communications Jill Frank, Membership Services

Speaking of great efforts, our Middleton Chamber has seen continued growth and participation from you, its members. Our Board of Directors is continually evaluating the success of events and the participation and engagement of members, and this will

be the focus of our strategic work moving forward. Through the year, we’ll be asking you what you and your organization need to be more successful. We’ll welcome any thoughts or ideas to build on our momentum and the energy of this organization. Finally, in 2014 I challenge you to try some programs—Ask the Expert, Economic Development, Get Moving Middleton or Business Social Hours—that you have never attended. To take this challenge one step further, try inviting a friend, co-worker or someone you want to do business with to attend with you. It’s a simple yet powerful way to show you care. I am very grateful for my Chamber membership and this opportunity to serve as your President in 2014. A remarkable percentage of my friends and people I do business with are members of this Chamber. I would have never imagined that an organization could facilitate so many special relationships in my life. Remember my challenge! I hope you see you and a colleague or friend at an upcoming Chamber program. Sincerely, Jason Guttenberg

2014 Board President

How Did You Get From There to Here? Profiles On The Vocational Journey

Interview by Jack Magee Jack is an Account Executive with Corporate Business Systems, a Local dealership for Xerox, Canon, Ricoh, HP and Lexmark. He is a 1998 graduate of the University of Georgia and has been a Chamber member since February 2013.

Meet: Kelly

Owner, Twin Valley Clay

What type of work do you do here at the Twin Valley Studio? This is my working studio and most of my pieces are made on the wheel. I create custom pieces, pie plates, soup bowls and mugs. I like creating functional pieces so when people take pieces home, they can use them in everyday life.

Besides throwing clay on the wheel, what other pieces do you create? Right now I have been doing carved tiles with hand painting. I am always looking for new things to try with a blend of color and design.

How long have you been in this location? It will be 2 years this spring. I finally decided to take the leap of faith to open my own studio. My original

studio was on Twin Valley Rd. for 2 years. Then I opened up on Parmenter St. one and a half years ago. What sessions and classes do you offer? We have birthday parties, pre-school/ parent classes, after school classes, adult classes and open studio time. People really like the atmosphere here and can get their creative side going.

How do you let people know about the classes and changes? Word of mouth and “constant contact,” have been very valuable. We offer classes in 6 week sessions and the topics are always changing. We also send email newsletters and post information on my website,

What inspired you to take up pottery? I just always found it fascinating. I graduated from the UW Madison with a degree in Art Education. I taught art for 8 years at Waunakee and then stayed at home with the kids for 10 years. PTA and kids activities kept me busy. Then the bug hit me to open my studio.

Do you sell your pieces at art shows? No, I don’t travel to many shows. The one show we do each year is a fund raiser for the local food pantry.

What future plans do you have? I would like to offer some guest artist classes and get some external input. I would like to offer some non-clay art classes. People are always looking for unique classes and mine are always changing. It would be great to build a raku kiln at home this summer so I can do some firings.

Charitable Causes Earn Quaker Steak & Lube National Recognition. For most people, Monday is a drag, but for charities like OccuPaws Guide Dog Association, Waukesha C.A.R.E. Center, Echo Food Pantry, and so many others, it’s a day when a difference is truly made. As part of Make a Difference Mondays, Wisconsin’s Quaker Steak & Lubes use Mondays to donate five percent of food sales to local charities. In total, the Quaker Steak & Lube restaurants in Wisconsin (Middleton, New Berlin and Janesville) have donated over $95,000 to charities like these. That’s no small number, which is why it’s no surprise the corporate Quaker Steak & Lube office awarded the Wisconsin locations with its Ray Travaglini award, which recognizes the Quaker Steak & Lube restaurants that gives the most back to its community.
