Dear Chamber Members, As we approach 2014 and my term as President comes to a close, the Chamber is in great shape. Jason Guttenberg from Liberty Mutual is taking over as President in 2014. Jason’s Executive Committee will consist of Bob Vanden Burgt (Yahara Software) as President Elect, Josh Marron (Middleton Community Bank) as Treasurer and Regina McFarland (Park Bank) as Secretary. I would also like to welcome two new board members: Jeff Kraemer (Kraemer Development) and Curt Fuszard (Merrill Lynch). These leaders have a vision for the future of the Chamber and each brings a unique perspective and set of strengths that will move us forward in 2014. It has been very rewarding to serve you in 2013 and I look forward to serving on the Executive Committee as Past –President.

The main areas of discussion at this years’ retreat involved communication, programs and outreach. It became clear that we have many great events and networking opportunities but we need more member input. We want to find out what you need most, how we can improve and how you prefer to receive communication from us. The Chamber has grown to well over 700 members and the challenge to provide exceptional service to all members, large and small, will remain our focus.

I would also like to extend a huge thank you to the entire 2013 Board of Directors and the committee leaders who are responsible for making 2013 a great year for the Chamber. Our active members make the events, socials and educational opportunities successful as well. None of these successes could happen without the Chamber staff, Van, Lisa and Jill, who work tirelessly on a daily basis to keep the Middleton Chamber an enthusiastic, fun and valuable organization for its members. I would like to acknowledge the contributions of outgoing board members –Beth Russell and Donna Parks who together, have volunteered many years of unselfish service to the Chamber. I am very thankful to have had the privilege of working with such an outstanding group over the last year.

As a result, we will be collecting your comments to help move the Chamber’s vision forward with short, targeted surveys at GMM and through personal interaction. The Ambassador Committee, which has been revamped and is doing a very nice job, may be asked to help gather some if this key data. Details have yet to be fully worked out.

In November, the Chamber staff and Board of Directors convened its annual planning retreat, led by Jason Guttenberg and consultant Laura Page. Our Project 2015 Plan has served the Chamber well (since 2010) and most of the initiatives set forth have been implemented.

Best wishes to all of our members for a joyous Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

The Chamber has grown to well over 700 members and the challenge to provide exceptional service to all members, large and small, will remain our focus. As a result, we will be collecting your comments to help move the Chamber’s vision forward with short, targeted surveys at GMM and through personal interaction. Details have yet to be fully worked out, but you’ll be involved!

How Did You Get From There to Here? Profiles On The Vocational Journey

Interview by Jack McGee Jack is an Account Executive with Corporate Business Systems, a Local dealership for Xerox, Canon, Ricoh, HP and Lexmark. He is a 1998 graduate of the University of Georgia and has been a Chamber member since February 2013.

Meet: Chad Boyer

Co-Owner of The Village Green

What is the history of The Village Green? The building has been around for quite a while. There is even an old coal chute. When Dad bought it in ’76, it was a four lane bowling alley. Dad had been working at Kelly’s Drive-In and the opportunity came to open the bar.

Where did you grow up? At the bar! Cheap labor and baby sitting in one! Things haven’t changed much since. We lived on the north side and went to East High, but spent the majority of our time working. We usually worked 4-9, went home, did home work and went to bed. Do it again the next day.

What is the family doing now? Dad is retired, but Mom still helps. (Cricket was serving customers during the interview.) Craig and I run the bar and our older sister and younger brother live in the Madison area.

Where do the ideas come from for new menu items? After 30 years of cooking, we like to mix it up and keep it fun. Some of things we whip up in the same kitchen we have always had, our dad can’t believe. We still have the original menu on the wall. Sometimes we just get bored and sometimes customers come up with names like, “Road Kill Burritos.”

What’s your favorite dish? Probably the Cajun pork sandwich, but really everything is good. Craig and I are doing 90% of the cooking. We really take pride in the quality of our food. With all the chain joints out there, we like to set ourselves apart by our attention to how we prepare our dishes.

What’s your secret to longevity? We learned a lot from our parent’s work ethic. There is no easy way around getting the work done. We focus on good service and expect more from our wait staff than other restaurants. We want them to make our customers feel taken care of.

What is your biggest challenge in 2013? Technology. We like having our regulars come in and a lot of people who grew up in Middleton know who we are. However, these days people are looking for places on the smart phones and using social media, it is hard for bars and restaurants like ours to keep up with all the changes while still managing a business. Luckily some of our neighbors are doing a great job of drawing people to downtown Middleton.

What has your experience been with the Middleton Chamber? Great! Ron [our dad] has a lot of plaques from when he was running the bar and was very active in the Chamber. Van and the team do a great job of promoting Middleton and do everything you would expect a Chamber to do for supporting local businesses.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years? We would probably sell to someone eventually, but we are not in a hurry. I would be curious to see what changes they would make to the place. Some places make changes from time to time, but we like keeping our bar the same when Middleton has changed so much.

What should people think of when they think of The Village Green? That we have been quietly serving Middleton’s best burgers for 35 years.

You can find Chad, Craig & their staff at 7508 Hubbard Avenue or online at www.thevillagegreenmiddleton.com

Don’t Let the Delayed Tax Season Stop You from Being Prepared. The IRS recently announced that, for the second year in a row, it will delay the start of tax season. However, the April 15 filing deadline, which is set by statute, remains in place. The original start date of the 2014 filing season was January 21, so with a one- to two-week delay, the IRS will potentially start accepting and processing 2013 individual tax returns no earlier than Jan. 28 and no later than Feb. 4. Although the IRS is behind schedule, Berndt CPAs encourages clients to start preparing now in order to be prepared for filing as soon as the opening date of tax season arrives.
