FOREWORD In these challenging times, our political, economic, historical and personal autonomy are core concerns. This year’s Middlesbrough Art Weekender presents work from artists responding to autonomy - from large-scale images of the aftermath of the Northern Irish troubles, to an artist working from the once bankrupted Detroit, USA; from the archives of Stasi Germany to an army tank made only for escape. Artists from across the region encompass the theme through a multitude of practices which always provoke and excite. The heartbeat of the festival is ADA, an autonomous drawing machine floating majestically in the Town Hall. This publication is a record of the third edition of the Middlesbrough Art Weekender. Across the following pages you will catch a glimpse of the energy and excitement that erupted onto the streets of Middlesbrough for four days. Nothing exists in a vacuum. This is true of autonomy and it is true of MAW19. We must share in it, we must speak about it, and we must live it.
