Rochdale Town Centre Key Developments
Rochdale is developing a completely new town centre experience that will reflect its pioneering roots, values and its beautiful surrounding countryside. At the heart of the dramatic transformation will be the creation of a fabulous piazza in one of the largest urban spaces in any English town, situated outside the breathtaking Grade I listed Town Hall. The Town Hall Square will be connected to the existing commercial centre, and to the new retail circuit as well as providing great new leisure and cultural facilities. A major extension to the Toad Lane Co-operative Museum is also underway and due to open in time for the UN Year of Cooperatives in 2012. With the Metrolink coming to Rochdale in 2012, and great connections to the motorway network via the M62, the future couldn’t look better.
Manchester – The Black Book
The exciting Town Centre Masterplan published in 2009 demonstrated how major transformation can take place in different quarters of the centre. This is now becoming reality with a number of key schemes on site providing a positive step forward for the town centre. The new Sixth Form College opened in September 2010 with 1,000 students enjoying the state of the art facilities in the town centre. The new civic office scheme is underway, due to be completed in late 2012, transforming the area around the river and bringing new life to the town centre, complete with a UK first – a town centre hydro-power scheme.
Alongside this, plans for a new Transport Interchange adjacent to the Metrolink are well advanced. There are also exciting plans to transform the town centre and enable the town to play its role as a sub regional shopping centre. The retail led mixed-use proposals being brought forward in partnership between the Council and Genr8 Developments will include a new department store, numerous new retail outlets, a hotel and family based leisure opportunities. This will form a key part of the ambitious £250 million redevelopment of the town centre.
Rochdale Town Centre MASTERPLAN Within the Town Centre master plan there are seven key themes that are now becoming reality through a £250 million investment in partnership between the private and public sectors: * A new, pedestrianised Town Hall Square * A learning and cultural quarter – following on the success of the new Sixth Form college, further investment at Hopwood Hall College and development of the town’s cultural assets * Town Centre East – A multimillion pound redevelopment to create a new retail heart along with leisure facilities and car parking * A circular boulevard – enabling better transport links around the town centre * Green Valley – Linking the many Award winning parks and gardens in the town centre to the wider surrounding countryside * Pioneer’s route – Celebrating the pioneering Co-operative spirit that enabled Rochdale to flourish * Place for People – A theme about defining different parts of the town centre that make up the cohesive whole
