Beautiful music More than 200 vocal music students gathered in Reinbeck Monday for the annual North Iowa Cedar League
Vocal Music Festival. Events were held at Gladbrook-Reinbeck (above), West Marshall (right) and Wapsie Valley and featured each school choir performing a short program followed by a larger group performance at the end. At Gladbrook-Reinbeck, AGWSR, Dike-New Hartford and Hudson joined G-R, with students working under the tutelage of UNI Assistant Professor of Choral Conducting John Le Wiles. The large group performed Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” a Brooks arrangement of Betelehemu, a Wilhousky arrangement of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and Hayes’ “Swingin’ with the Saints.” At right, Grundy Center students joined West Marshall, BCLUW, East Marshall and other area schools in State Center. Compensation Board recommends 4 percent salary increases
By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County’s elected officials would receive 4 percent raises under a proposal passed last Friday during the annual meeting of the Grundy County Compensation Board. The raises, which must still be approved by the Board of Supervisors, are for the County’s attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, supervisors and treasurer. Dollar amounts range from $914 for each of the five supervisors to $2,863 for Sheriff Rick Penning. The proposed increases are identical to those requested by Penning, Auditor Rhonda Deters, Recorder Chuck Kruse and Treasurer Brenda Noteboom and similar to that requested by County Attorney Kirby Schmidt. Supervisor Chairman Harlyn Riekena did not have a specific raise request. Each county official spent sev-
eral minutes discussing the specific duties of their department, including increased responsibilities. Penning, who received a larger increase than other county officials last year, noted that the Iowa Department of Safety pays its officials more than the county pays its sheriff while Kruse noted that he recently graduated from the Recorder’s Association’s Centerfied Recorder Program. Noteboom discussed new vehicle registration laws, noting that her department must keep up on the ever-changing rules, while Schmidt compared his salary to that of other part-time county attorneys in similar-sized Iowa counties. Compensation Board discussion centered around what raises other businesses are giving as well as both the Consumer Price Index (1.16 percent) and Cost of Living Index (1.5 percent).
