The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — As the Iowa legislature prepares to debate whether or not to raise Iowa’s road use tax (a.k.a. gas tax), the Grundy County Board of Supervisors made it clear Monday that they would be in favor of such an increase.

Compensation Board recommends 4 percent salary increases

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County’s elected officials would receive 4 percent raises under a proposal passed last Friday during the annual meeting of the Grundy County Compensation Board.

The raises, which must still be approved by the Board of Supervisors, are for the County’s attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, supervisors and treasurer. Dollar amounts range from $914 for each of the five supervisors to $2,863 for Sheriff Rick Penning.

The proposed increases are identical to those requested by Penning, Auditor Rhonda Deters, Recorder Chuck Kruse and Treasurer Brenda Noteboom and similar to that requested by County Attorney Kirby Schmidt. Supervisor Chairman Harlyn Riekena did not have a specific raise request.

Penning, who received a larger increase than other county officials last year, noted that the Iowa Department of Safety pays its officials more than the county pays its sheriff while Kruse noted that he recently graduated from the Recorder’s Association’s Centerfied Recorder Program. Noteboom discussed new vehicle registration laws, noting that her department must keep up on the ever-changing rules, while Schmidt compared his salary to that of other part-time county attorneys in similar-sized Iowa counties.

Various groups set up displays to introduce visitors to available health-related services while blood screenings, blood pressure checks, information on emergency preparedness, and enrollment for the Live Healthy Iowa Wellness Challenge were also available, as were breakfast samples in the East J Cafe. Comp Board From page 1 Schuller said businesses he spoke to were giving between 3 and 3.5 percent raises while Neil Okones said raises for those in the banking industry were running between 3.5 and 4 percent.

One thing handicapping the Board’s decision this year is that few counties have approved salary increases at this point. Black Hawk County has approved a 2.75 percent increase for its elected officials while the Cass County compensation board proposed a 7 percent increase for its officials. Deters said those numbers were the lower and upper end for counties she has seen.

Board Chairman Chris Frischmeyer noted that, though they are receiving raises, many employees are also being asked to pick up a higher percentage of the cost of their health insurance, something Board Member Jim Wertz backed up when he said nearly all of Black Hawk County’s 2.75 percent increase will go toward higher health insurance premiums.

Grundy County does not yet know how much its insurance costs will increase next year, something the Board of Supervisors will likely also not know when they act on the increases next Monday.

“That makes this tough,” Frischmeyer said. “Without (the insurance costs) we tend to be more conservative.”

Deters said because of last year’s health insurance increase and the addition of a 2 percent Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) that they had not been paying, her salary dropped in August, 2013 compared to a year earlier.

As another point of reference, Noteboom said the recently-passed settlement with the Grundy County Secondary Roads Union comes out to a 3.2 percent total package increase.

A Board member noted that Grundy County’s auditor, recorder and treasurer salaries are idential, something Deters said is the case in 57 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The others, she said, have a differential of between $7 and $8,800. She said the salaries have been identical in Grundy County since Fiscal Year 2000.

“I think the reason for that being presented by elected officials at that time was to keep better cooperation between the different departments, not only the department heads but their people working in their offices,” Schuller said.

Deters, however, said the auditor’s office is required by law to remain open to the public additional hours over the others.

“I’m not taking anything away from Chuck or Brenda, they do a great job in their offices, all of our offices are responsible for many, many things,” she said. “I do think

there is a difference between the accountability and hours that our office is required to perform.”

While Deters said other employees in her office get compensation time to make up for the extra hours, as an exempt employee she does not, though Noteboom said she could give herself that compensation time.

“My philosophy is the people of Grundy County elected me to do the job, I’m doing this job whether it takes me 30 hours a week or 60 hours a week,” Kruse said. “I just would not like to see these three offices split up. It’s going to be devastating.”

Frischmeyer said, whatever the Board decides, it is important that the request be reasonable enough that the Supervisors will approve it.

“I think we need to keep salaries competitive,” he said. “We have good employees, and to keep them we need to give them raises that are competitive.”

The motion to send a 4 percent increase to the Board of Supervisors for approval was passed unanimously. Supervisors can reduce the proposal but cannot increase them.

Law states that if the Supervisors reduce the proposals, all must be reduced by the same percentage with the exception of their own salary, which they are permitted to reduce more than the others.

Supervisors From page 1 The Board unanimously passed a resolution presented by County Engineer Gary Mauer in favor of such an increase.

The resolution is similar to one put together by the state supervisors association. It notes that several counties have been forced to purchase bonds to pay for necessary road repair, something Grundy County has not done yet but could in the near future.

Supervisors discussed several issues related to the fuel tax, including whether the state would consider increasing the tax only on diesel fuel and the affect of cars with better fuel efficiency on the road use fund.

In other business, the Board approved a resolution to pay for the 2014 pavement-marking project from Farm-to-Market funds. Mauer said the county marks about half of its 200 miles of hard-surfaced roads each year. He said using Farm-toMarket funds frees up general funding to be used for other projects.

Mauer said funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a pair of bridge replacement projects north of Wellsburg continues to be held up in review. The bridges on G and H Avenues between 140th and 150th Streets were damaged in last June’s flash flooding and have been closed ever since. Mauer said he does not have the money in his budget to repair the bridges before FEMA funding comes in, but could temporarily borrow funds from another area to get the project moving.

Supervisor Harlyn Riekena said the roads department should do whatever it can to get at lease the bridge on H Avenue open as soon as possible.

Supervisor Jim Ross also asked Mauer about the judgment of when to sand roads, suggesting that there are times when only sanding inter-

sections would be appropriate.

Mauer said he follows county policy, which is to sand the entire road. As it is, he said he has received several complaints from the AGWSR School District Superintendent about the way Grundy County treats its roads. Supervisor Mark Schildroth added that the moment there is an accident on untreated roads, the county will get a complaint. He said he feels the current county policy is working fine.

Mauer said he will print the county policy on treating roads during the winter so that the Supervisors can review it.

The Board appointed Shannon Sims to the Civil Service Commission, approved quarterly reports from the County sheriff, auditor and recorder, the December Clerk of Court report, the Dec. 31 County Treasurer’s investment report and semi-annual report.

The Board began hearing budget requests from its various departments at Monday’s meeting.

County Treasurer Brenda Noteboom reviewed budgets for the tax department as well as motor vehicle and driver’s license services while Don Kampman presented the IT/ GIS department budget. Noting increasing expenses for software licensing, Supervisor Chuck Bakker asked Kampman if there were any programs that could be cut, though Kampman said each and every one of the programs is used regularly.

Supervisors also asked Kampman about research he has done on a new phone system for several county buildings, including the courthouse. He said he has been working with the Dumont Telephone Company on a system that would be effective and could save the county money in the long run. The phone system has been budgeted for in Fiscal 2015.

Obituaries

Martha Graves, 70, of Dike passed away January 7, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. A funeral service was held on January 10 at the Orchard Hill Church at Lincoln Center, rural Grundy Center. Burial followed at Lincoln Center Cemetery. A visitation was held January 9 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Dike. Memorials may be directed to the family. Martha was born January 20, 1943, in ‘S Gravenzande, Netherlands, the daughter of Marinus and Tine (DeBruin) DenHarder. Martha was raised in Kalamazoo, Mich., attended Kalamazoo schools and graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. After graduating from high school, Martha attended the Reformed Bible Institute. Martha was united in marriage to Wayne Edwin Graves on May 10, 1963, at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in rural Grundy Center. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in rural Dike from 1963 to 1992. In 1992 they moved to their current home in Dike. She worked for Oster Communications and Professional Farmers of America before retiring on December 31, 2007. Martha was a member of Orchard Hill Church at Lincoln Center where she was active in the Ladies Fellowship and Dorcas. She also taught Bible School, Sunday School and Catechism for many years. Martha loved to spend time with her family and friends - especially her grandchildren. Camping and biking with Wayne, usually with several grandchildren in tow, was one of her favorite past-times, along with scrapbooking, photography, and making handmade cards. Martha also had a passion for baking. Everyone who visited her home or Lincoln Center enjoyed her cookies and bars. Martha was always available to listen to and help friends and neighbors. Martha touched a lot of lives.

She is survived by her husband; Wayne of Dike; children: Karen Marks and her husband John of Dike, Ken Graves and wife Tami of Colorado Springs, Colo., Cheryl Ringler of Manteno, Ill., Diane Eisenga and husband Bryan of McBain, Mich., Russ Graves and his wife Mollie of Dike, Mark Graves and his wife Missy of Harris; 25 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild; brother, Marinus DenHarder of Otsego, Mich.; and sister, Nellie Balkema of Schoolcraft, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Neil DenHarder.

Minnie C. Eddy, 93, of Dike passed away January 9, 2014, at The Western Home, Martin Center in Cedar Falls while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service was held January 15 at the United Methodist Church in Dike. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation was held January 14 at the United Methodist Church in Dike. Minnie Caroline was born the daughter of George and Marie (Willig) Bessman on May 1, 1920, in Buckeye. Minnie grew up in the Wellsburg area where she attended school. On July 11, 1942, Minnie was united in marriage with Calvin Jackson Eddy in Unionville, Mo. Jack passed away December 30, 1958.

Minnie spent the next years from 1960 until she retired in 1985 as a childcare provider for many area children. Minnie was a favorite Sunday school teacher with all the preschool children at the Dike United Methodist Church.

She was crowned queen of the Dike bi-centennial celebration. Minnie was a member of Dike United Methodist Church. Minnie enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers Zeal Bessman and Brice Bessman; and sisters, Ruth Roegner, Lois Moore and DeLilah Whitmire.

Minnie is survived by four children, Jackie (Dale) Robinson of Chisholm, Minn., Barb (Tom) Rich of Dike, Charles (Sharon) Eddy of Newell, and Mary (Dennis) Perdock of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; brother, Don (Bonnie) Bessman and sister, Eileen Schultz of Marshalltown, and many nieces and nephews.

Martha A. Freese

Martha Ann Freese, 91, of Grundy Center died January 10, 2014, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Services were held January 14, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. A private family committal service at Rose Hill Cemetery was held prior to the memorial service. Martha was born February 20, 1922, in Clutier, the daughter of James and Anna (Slatinka) Cech. She attended school in Clutier and Traer, and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1940. After graduation, she worked for her parents at Cech's Grocery in Grundy Center and then worked at the grocery again from 1961-1979.

Martha married Paul A. Thoren on April 25, 1944, at Nashua. The couple had three children. Paul died on October 7, 1961, in a boating accident in Guttenburg.

On December 26, 1971, Martha married Edward E. Freese at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Ed died on March 20, 2013.

Martha was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She liked to visit with friends and relatives. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren.

Martha is survived by two daughters, Carol Kruger of Hubbard and Jan (Dean) Meyer of Cedar Rapids; one son, Randall (Jean) Thoren of Grundy Center; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Cech of Winter Park, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Paul Thoren and Edward Freese; son-in-law, Arlen Kruger; sister-in-law, Shirley Cech; and step-brother, Paul Babinate and his wife Minda.

Robert W. Thompson

Robert W. Thompson, 66, of Gladbrook died January 1, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. A funeral service was held January 6 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial was private. Visitation was held January 5 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Bob was born on June 23, 1947, in Devil’s Lake, N.D., the son of Jens and Kathryn (Cold) Thompson. The family moved to Iowa in 1951 to live on the family farm. Bob graduated from Gladbrook High School with the Class of 1965. He then went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University in 1970 and his Juris Doctorate from Drake Law School in 1972. Bob served in the Army National Guard from 1971to 1977 and was honorably discharged. Bob began practicing law with Mike Rickert in 1972 and opened his own law practice in 1990.

Bob was a member of the Masonic Coin Lodge No. 394 in Reinbeck, Coinette Chapter No. 273, the El Kahir Shrine, First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, Grundy and Tama County Bar Association, Iowa Trial Lawyers, Iowa State Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Reinbeck Theater Guild, the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Reinbeck American Legion Action Post No. 242. He served on the original Community Development Corporation for Reinbeck, the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Conestoga Girl Scout Council. In 2010 Bob received the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyer Project Award.

Bob was united in marriage to Carol Jane Reynolds on February 16, 1991, in Grundy Center.

Bob is survived by his wife Carol of Gladbrook; his children, Matt Thompson of Grundy Center, Skip Foos of Gladbrook, Scott Foos of Fayette, Megan (Greg) Bearbower of Nebraska City, Neb., Jenn Even of Marion, and Andre Allen of Waukee; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous cousins; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and several aunts and uncles.

As we move into the 2014 Iowa Legislative General Assembly, it’s a good time to look at where we are as a state. Between the time I have written this and the time you read it, Governor Branstad will have given his Condition of the State address.

I’m pretty sure he’ll say things are going well. But there are always ways we can improve.

Among issues the legislature is likely to look hard at are the minumum wage, school funding, tax incentives and possibly the road use tax.

The road use tax (a.k.a. gas tax) is an issue I wrote a little about last year and will mention again here. Though nobody I know wants a tax increase, the fact is that Iowa’s roads need work. A couple of years ago Grundy County Engineer Gary Mauer told

By JOHN JENSEN me the Secondary Roads Department could at one time afford to resurface a road every year or so. Now, however, that’s a road every few years. And Grundy County is no different than anywhere else. The situation is only going to get worse as our roads get older.

Iowa’s 22-cent per gallon gas tax (including other taxes and fees) ranks 16th lowest in the nation despite the state having the 14th most miles of roads of any state. Of states with lower gas taxes than Iowa, only Alaska, Missouri and New Hampshire have climates anywhere near the freeze-thaw cycle that our roads see. Except Missouri, every state surrounding Iowa has a higher tax, including Nebraska (25.5 cents), Minnesota (28.6), Wisconsin’s (32.9) and Illinois (39.1). In addition, 18.4 cents from every gallon of gas goes to the federal government.

The legislature has suggested a hike of 10 cents per gallon, graduated over a few years. Though that seems like a lot on the surface, figure it’s going to cost about $2 extra to fill your 20-gallon tank. Fill up once a week and that’s about $100 per year.

Increasing the minimum wage has been a major push in some parts of the country, and Iowa Democrats have said they will introduce bills to raise the rate in Iowa as well. Iowa’s minimum wage is currently set at $7.25 per hour, which is also the federal minimum. Those forced to raise a family on that say it’s next to impossible and I can believe it -- when I entered the workforce 21

The Haunted Clock

By SUE ECKHOFF Grundy County Heritage Museum I recently lost my father. His health had been declining fairly rapidly, and he entered Hospice the day after Thanksgiving. Hospice people were wonderful, but they wanted everything to fit into their timetable. According to that they thought he would live 2-3 months. I said it would be at Christmas. You see my family has a propensity of dying at Christmas time.

When I was in College, my grandmother had a stoke on Christmas Eve and died. My uncle had a heart attack on Christmas Eve and died. December 22 they called the family in for Dad, and on December 23 he died, which brings me to the clock story.

My parents had always had this extremely ugly clock. It belonged to my great grandmother. I never knew her, but from what everybody has always said, she was pretty ornery. Somehow my mom inherited the clock when her grandmother died. To my mom’s knowledge the clock had never worked and the whole time my parents had it, it had never worked. One evening my parents were sitting in their den talking and the subject of my great grandmother came up. My dad commented that she had always scared the daylights out of him, and at that minute the clock chimed!

years ago, I made a little less than $7.25 per hour (if I calculated a 40-hour week from my salary) and can attest that it wasn’t easy to live on even then.

I sympathize with those who have to now.

The question I have is what raising the wage would do to small businesses.

One way of thinking is that employers would be paying higher wages and thus have less money to spend on other things. The other hand, however, is that people would have more money to spend, and that it might balance things out. Which is right? An economist would be more qualified to answer that than I am.

School funding is a topic every time the state appears to be on solid financial footing, and Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has already suggested that this year will be no different, suggsting Monday that “Gov. Branstad should step up and lead by proposing a modest increase in basic state funding for Iowa schools.”

In truth, don’t expect a lot of any of this to happen this year due to upcoming elections. Governor Branstad isn’t going to want to rock the cart too much and neither are any legislators whose number is up this year. The best hope is that this year’s discussion leads to action in years to come.

• • • Finally, I found a surprise as I was doing research for this column. On a Web site for another media entity I saw the name of a person I hadn’t seen since high school ... a person I’d wondered what happened to. He had not had anything to do with class reunions or the Web site one of our classmates put together to help us keep in touch, so I must confess that I figured he had moved out of state. Could it be the same person?

A quick click on the link by their name brought a face that looked familiar ... or at least as familiar as a face could look after not seeing it for more than 25 years. This person was a friend, but not an extremely close friend of mine in high school - we were involved in some of the same activities and had done things together, but for the most part evolved into different social circles. I remember him as one of the most decent kids I knew and also one of the most talented in fine arts.

To the best of my knowledge, he and I are the only people from our particular class who ended up in this line of work, though I don’t remember him being particularly interested in media. Then again, people wouldn’t remember me that way either - my first newspaper experience didn’t come until my junior year of college.

Am I certain the person I found is the person I’ve wondered what happened to as we prepared for our last few class reunions? The name is the same, including an unusually-spelled last name, and the face looked about the way I would expect it to. So, yes, I am fairly certain.

What I haven’t decided is whether or not to try to reconnect with him. As close to Fairfield as he lives, and working in a media field, there’s no way he could have missed our reunion information if he had any desire to be part of us. And I remember him as a fairly extreme introvert — an extremely private person. I’m not finding a Facebook connection, though the contact I found has a work-related e-mail address. As much as I’m curious, a large part of me says to leave well enough alone ... at least until our next class reunion. But it’s good to know he’s still around.

Freaked them both out!

Fast forward to three years ago. My dad sold his house and had an auction. For some insane reason my husband thought I either liked the clock, or that I needed it. So he spent a WHOLE LOT of money for a clock that I basically hated, and again did I mention, the clock did not work!

Well, a year later my mom was in a nursing home, and not doing well.

My husband was up early working at his desk, and lo and behold the clock chimed. Convinced it was a bad sign, he ran upstairs and told me, and I had the dreadful feeling that something bad was going to happen. My mother died two days later.

My dad’s service was held on December 27. After we got home, I took a vase of flowers from the funeral, and put them on the library table next to the clock. You know what’s coming now right? Yes, immediately when I set the vase down the clock started chiming! Whereas in the past it only chimed once, this time it was about ten times, all the while I was running around to the kitchen yelling “the clock’s chiming”.

That’s really the end of the “story.” It hasn’t chimed since then, nor do I expect it to, after all it doesn’t work, right? But I will say that I’m superstitious enough that I’m thinking of selling it on E-bay!

What a difference 50 degrees can make. As I write this, it was only a week ago that the thermometer was reading 50 degrees colder at minus 20 degrees!

For some folks - car batteries gave up the ghost, water pipes froze, and furnaces said enough was enough. But we made it.

It was the same with Iowa wildlife, too. Every part of living in those extreme conditions was more difficult for them, as well. And they suffered additional winter stress, but most survived. Most but not all. The extreme temperatures that we experienced took out the weakened representatives of the species.

The very old and the very young.

The injured or the sick. That’s how it works. That’s survival – of the fittest.

For the healthy, the extreme, three-day subzero stretch is not in itself especially harmful to wildlife. If there is good winter cover close to a good food source then most wildlife will be just fine.

But good winter cover is hard to come by around here. Shrubs, conifers, cattails and other thick vegetation provide cover for wildlife when snow obliterates grassy habitat.

Take a drive around. And while you do, take note of the “waste” areas that disappeared just in the last year or two as more property was pushed into production.

You might find it interesting that pheasants, perhaps the most vulnerable of the state’s game species to severe winter weather, seldom freeze to death. According to Todd Bogenschutz, DNR upland game biologist, there is little correlation between winter temperatures and pheasant mortality. A much better indicator, he said, is the number of days that snow covers the pheasants’ habitat. Heavy snow buries much of the vegetation pheasants and other small game animals depend on to protect them from the elements and from predators. The longer they have to live against a white background, the more vulnerable to predators they become.

As long as ice or mounting snow does not cut off their food supply, that’s about the best that we can wish for wildlife right now. So, the warm snap that we experienced a few days ago was a true blessing.

Waste grain has been exposed and made available again to wildlife. It was just what the doctor ordered.

A lot of winter remains. It might bring a lot more snow and cold. For us, that means a lot more shoveling and jumping car batteries. For wildlife, it could mean life or death. But at least for now, they’ve drawn a good card.

Grundy County Extension & Outreach, in partnership with Kling Memorial Library, is offering a Linking Literacy to Food class to be held at Kling Memorial Library January 23, 2014 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Daycare providers will earn 2 clock hours credit for child care license renewal.

Class is open to anyone interested in learning about early reading and language development, not limited to daycare providers.

Early reading and language development helps kids be "school ready" and greatly increases their chance for academic success. A great way to introduce literacy is to link reading to food! This class will share well-loved children's books and food related activities to use with children. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending ECC classes in Iowa Falls or online. Parttime students are not included on this list, and developmental courses do not count toward a student’s GPA. The next meeting will be at the home of Janelle Onnen on February 20 at 7:30 p.m.

German Club to meet Jan. 20

The Ostfriesen Heritage Society will meet at 7 p.m. at the Wellsburg Public Library on January 20 to elect officers for 2014.

The evening’s program will be presented by Mary Zimmerman.

She will be sharing her experiences of their 2013 tour of Ostfriesland.

The latest changes in farm estate planning will be presented by Kelvin Leibold and Melissa O’Rourke, ISU Extension Farm and Agribusiness Management Specialists at the Evaluating your Estate Plan program presented by the Grundy County Extension & Outreach office on January 27, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. All resource materials, snacks and a lunch will be included with the registration fee.

These look like two great new recipes to try since at the Kanagy house we have enjoyed ‘Pizza Night’ on Fridays for quite some time and mostly homemade like Carol stated. But recently our son has had football and basketball games on Fridays so I had made an ‘executive decision’ several months ago to have it on Saturdays now, which gives us more time to get them made and enjoy them with a family movie.

1 lb. hamburger 1/2 c. chopped onions

•Brown hamburger and onions then drain grease

1 c. flour 2/3 c. milk 1 tsp. salt

2 eggs Pizza sauce Mozzarella cheese

Mix flour, milk, salt and eggs. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Place hamburger mixture on top of batter. Bake for 20 minutes at 400º. Remove from oven; pour pizza sauce over all. You may add whatever you like (mushrooms, olives, peppers). Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 15 minutes.

AGWSR to begin superintendent search

The AGWSR Community School District Board of Education has selected McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development to assist them in the important task of selecting superintendent candidates for the board to interview.

Individuals who would like to provide input into the process may do so by going to the AGWSR district website and click on the link “superintendent search”. GRUNDY CENTER – Famous New York City landmarks will be spotted in Grundy County for the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s annual fundraising Gala, titled ‘Lights of Broadway’. Ticket sales are underway for the Saturday, February 8th event, which includes dinner and a Live and Silent Auction, held at the Grundy Center Community Center.

A raffle of fine jewelry provided

by Dean Jewelers, downtown Cedar Falls, is a highlight of the event, as are the Live and Silent auctions. Auction items include a week-long destination vacation, a landscaping package, a variety of tickets to theatre and sporting events, and a signed Green Bay Pack-

ers football.

“We are excited about this year’s Lights of Broadway theme and the chance to provide guests with an elegant evening for their Valentine’s Day outing,” says Erin Schildroth, hospital Community Outreach Coordinator.

Proceeds will benefit the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s 2014 Annual Campaign, which supports health care initiatives in several hospital departments.

GRUNDY COUNTY LANDFILL COMMISSION Minutes of the meeting held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 Location: Grundy County Courthouse Members Present: Melcher, Chm., Smith, Secretary, Riekena, Rhoads, Ross and Knaack Additional attendee: Schoolman The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Chairman Melcher.

The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved on a motion by Knaack, seconded by Riekena.

On a motion by Ross, seconded by Rhoads, bills were approved totaling $243.03 for the Landfill Closure Fund and $2,677.68 for the Citizen’s Convenience Center.

Business Items: Schoolman reported that no leachate has been hauled since the November meeting due to winter conditions. He will contact the landfill engineer to see what needs to be done about hauling between now and spring. He is still waiting for the Secondary Road Dept. personnel to come and remove the volunteer trees from the area of the closed landfill.

Chm. Melcher read the engineer’s response to the DNR regarding the methane gas monitoring and the plan to stay on schedule with testing going forward.

Extensive discussion ensued regarding the need to purchase a new/used forklift.

Quotes were solicited from three firms, using identical specifications. The age of the forklift, the number of hours of use, and the price of each machine was considered. On a motion by Ross, second by Knaack, the Commission voted to purchase a 2008 Toyota forklift from a Cedar Rapids firm at a price of $20,000, which includes the addition of a block heater, servicing, painting and delivery. This machine is currently being leased by the landfill from the same firm for $1000/month. Those lease costs will be forgiven. The contract for the purchase of this machine will be on the Board of Supervisor’s agenda at the 12/16 meeting, where permission will be sought for Board of Supervisor Chm., Jim Ross, to sign said contract on behalf of Grundy County. The forklift will be paid for out of the Landfill Closure account where excess funds have accumulated, with the invoice included in the bills to be approved by the Board of Supervisors on 12/15/13.

Election of officers will be held at the January, 2014 meeting.

The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Ross and a second by Riekena. at 7:15 pm.

January 8, 2014 The Dike City Council met in regular session on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. with Mayor Soppe presiding. Council members present were: Chad Cutsforth, Rob Weissenfluh, Nick Cleveland, Luke Osterhaus and Bob Haugebak. Also present were: Shane Metz, Joe Becker, Zeb Stanbrough, B. J. Jorgensen, Gene Drachenberg, Diane Paige and Mike Camarata.

Consent Agenda – Motion by Haugebak to approve the following in the consent agenda: Sheriff’s report, library report, approval of minutes as presented and delinquent utility accounts. Seconded by Cleveland. All ayes.

Carried.

Sewer Line – Jorgensen discussed the problem he has had with sewer back up in his basement at his home on Main St. This has happened 3 times with 2 times being this past December.

The line is jetted every year because of past problems. Municipal Pipe Tool came and jetted the line. The line has been televised. There is a root problem with Jorgensen’s sewer connection which caused the back up into his basement. There is also a root problem farther south down the line. Discussion about having the Municipal come and root saw the line every couple of years. Motion by Cutsforth to root saw the line every couple of years. Seconded

by Weissenfluh. All ayes. Carried. Jorgensen stated that he would like to come back in the spring to discuss working with the City when it comes time to fix his connection.

Superintendant’s Report – Metz stated that Klatt’s last day of work was January 3. He has taken a job in Cedar Falls. Discussion about replacing ballast in lights in the council chambers and office. Metz would like to put LED lights in 2 fixtures in the office. Discussion about LED street lights. Metz has been replacing street lights with LED as the old ones wear out. Council decided to wait to do the LED lights in the office. The electric committee would like to look at the goals for energy saving for the city. Metz stated that he had dug 3 graves. The last one took quite a while and a jackhammer was used to get through the frost. He asked the council to consider raising the grave opening fee from $375.00 to $650.00 in the winter. Also if possible, he would like at least 3-days notice before digging a grave in winter. Council will look at changing the fee when they do the budget.

Metz would like to get a tamper. He has located a used one for $1200.00. New would be approximately $2200.00. He was instructed to get bids and find out more about the used tamper.

Metz stated that he will be lighting the brush pile. Discussion about turning the compost pile.

Discussing about things that will be needed and a wish list for the maintenance department to be discussed at budget time. The Mayor stated that we have 3 applicants for the maintenance position. A meeting for interviews will be set up for January 16 at 6:00 p.m.

Fields Addition Discussion – The Mayor has talked to the city attorney. The attorney will be getting in touch with the clerk to get data.

Resolution to Name an Official Paper – Cutsforth introduced Resolution #108141, A RESOLUTION NAMING THE GRUNDY REGISTER AS THE OFFICIAL PAPER FOR DIKE, and moved that it be adopted. Seconded by Osterhaus. Roll Call Vote: Ayes: Cutsforth, Weissenfluh, Haugebak, Cleveland, Osterhaus.

Nays: None. Whereupon the Mayor declared Resolution #108141 duly adopted.

Ahlers & Cooney have sent papers to be signed so that we can change the closing date of the loan. The loan will close February 7, 2014. Clerk talked to Jeremiah Lehr from the school about getting the tablets set up. He suggested getting Office 365 to use for sending council packets and having everyone set up a special email address that would just be for city business. Office 365 would cost $17.00 a month per user - $136.00 per month and the first 30-days is free. Council decided not to go this route. Cleveland will talk to DeWayne Purdy about setting up emails for the council.

Mayor’s Comments – Discussion about setting up budget workshops. January 22, 2014 at 6:00 will be the first budget workshop.

Metz discussed the problem with the cardboard at the recycling site. He suggested separating the brown cardboard, baling and selling it.

There will be more discussion at a later time.

There was a correction in last months minutes, the new water rates will take affect in the January 2014 billing cycle not 2013.

Mike Wildung was not present for the water / sewer report.

The FY2015 Budget was briefly discussed, not all information is available for completion.

Council agreed to pay Russ Lage for moving snow around City Hall for the last 2 years. Cox made a motion to pay Russ $300.00, Hansen 2nd, all ayes motion carried.

There has been complaints about sidewalks not being cleaned or cleared of snow. The Mayor has approached the citizens that have been neglecting their responsibilities and posted the ordinance at City Hall.

After discussion, Cox made a motion to approve bills, Blythe 2nd, all ayes motion carried.

Confinement site manure applicator training scheduled

Confinement site manure applicators should plan to attend a two-hour workshop offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to maintain or renew their confinement site manure applicator certification. The Grundy County workshop will be offered on February 7 at 1:30 pm at the Dike Public Library.

“Iowa law requires confinement site manure applicators to attend two hours of continuing education each year of their three-year certification period, or take and pass the exam once every three years,” said Angela Reick-Hinz, ISU Extension and Outreach program specialist and coordinator of the manure applicator certification program. “If applicators fail to attend the two hours of continuing education each year, they will be required to pass a written exam to be eligible to recertify.” Each year nearly 200 confinement site applicators fail to attend training and must pass the remedial exam prior to being eligible to renew their certification for the following year.

The workshop serves as initial certification for those applicators that are not currently certified, recertification for those renewing licenses, and as continuing education for those applicators in their second or third year of their license.

The 2014 confinement site program will include rules for applicators as well as land-application requirements, an update on foaming pits, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and biosecurity issues, and an interactive exercise in manure spill response.

Operators must be certified to handle, transport, and apply manure

if the confinement livestock operation has more than a 500 animal unit capacity, unless the manure is applied by a commercial manure applicator. The certification fee is $100 for a three-year certificate. This fee is paid when applicators initially get certified and then every three years when they re-certify to apply manure.

Confinement site applicators are also required to pay an annual education fee of $25. All fees and application forms must be sent to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to complete certification requirements.

ISU Extension and Outreach will charge a $10 fee to applicators choosing to view the certification materials on a non-scheduled reshow day at the county office. For this reason all applicators are encouraged to attend the workshops or to plan to view training materials on the scheduled reshow date at their local county extension office. This fee will not apply to workshops or scheduled reshow dates. Please contact the county extension office to determine which days are scheduled for the manure applicator certification programs.

Applicators are encouraged to complete their certification requirements annually prior to March 1 to meet certification deadlines and avoid being assessed a $12.50 late fee for re-certification.

If you studied human anatomy twenty or thirty years ago, you were probably taught that the appendix (or vermiform appendix—the small wormlike pouch that hangs from the cecum of the large intestine), was a useless structure, perhaps some vestigial organ that served a purpose in our long-distant past. I distinctly remember an argument some thirty years ago between my father (who argued that it must have some purpose) and my brother (who was in his first or second year of medical school, and who argued that it had none that could be discerned). My father’s argument was based on his belief that God would not have created something without a purpose. He didn’t necessarily know what the purpose was, but there must be one. People do just fine without one, my brother rejoined, and he asked, furthermore, what is the purpose of eyebrows? To keep sweat from getting in your eyes was my father’s answer, and wouldn’t we look pretty strange without eyebrows? Medical science now believes that the appendix is a repository for the good bacteria that colonize our intestines and which aid in all sorts of important functions, from digestion to our immune system. So score one for Dad, and the view that to everything under heaven there is indeed apurpose. We may not always know that purpose but should trust to Providence that there is one.

Hospital Foundation kicks off 2014 Annual Campaign

Schultz, shown at left with hospital CEO Brian Kellar, was the longtime president of GNB Bank, and to honor his service, each year GNB provides an Arnie Schultz Community Grant to a local non-profit organization.

Schultz designated the grant for the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation 2014 Annual Campaign, which is currently underway. The campaign will help fund improvements in patient safety and satisfaction in the hospital lab, inpatient, specialty clinic, and surgery departments.

Our Passion. Our Patients.” This theme emphasizes the high standards to which CRNAs adhere when administering anesthesia, and the quality of care they provide for their patients.

“National Nurse Anesthetists Week serves as an opportunity to promote the fact that throughout history, nurse anesthetists have furthered the art and science of anesthesia to ensure patients receive high quality anesthesia care,” said J. Craig Vana, Grundy County Memorial Hospital’s full time anesthesia provider. “Resting easy is exactly what patients can do, knowing that a CRNA is by their side, monitoring their vital signs and adjusting their anesthetics during the entire time they are asleep.”

Practicing in every setting where anesthesia is administered, CRNAs are the sole anesthesia professionals in nearly all rural hospitals, and have been the main provider of anesthesia care to U.S. service men and women on the front lines since World War I. “I take pride in belonging to a profession that places patient safety and education on the top of its list of priorities,” Vana said. “Nurse anesthetists have been at the forefront of anesthesia patient safety for 150 years. CRNAs play a key role in

developing trends and innovations related to patient monitoring, technology, anesthetic medications, and standards of care. In fact, due to continuing research, developments, and education, anesthesia today is nearly 50 times safer than it was 20 years ago.”

The Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists represents over 275 CRNAs who are the “backbone” of anesthesia care in Iowa. CRNAs serve the residents of Iowa in nearly all 118 hospitals statewide, and are the sole providers of anesthesia care in 75 percent of all hospitals in Iowa.

Discontinued tax forms for 2013 income tax filing Fire burns grain bin near Beaman

Beaman firefighters drained an estimated 5,000 bushels of corn to reach a fire in a grain bin last Tuesday. The Beaman Fire Department was disputed to the Stan Neff farm in the 19,000 block of 100th Street in Marshall County (one mile south of Beaman) at 2:52 p.m. The fire was thought to be limited to the top portion of the grain bin, so a bucket truck was brought in around 4 p.m. to cut a hole in the sidewall near the top of the bin to drain out the burnt corn. Firemen were on scene till 7:30 p.m. The cause of the fire was believed to be electrical.

Assisting the Beaman Fire Dept. were: B-Certs (First Responders), the Conrad Fire Dept and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.

DES MOINES — The percentage of Iowans who file their income tax returns electronically has increased by 20 percent in the past five years.

During that same time period, use of Iowa’s short forms, which cannot be filed electronically, has decreased by 50 percent. In response to this trend and to continue providing more efficient service, the Iowa Department of Revenue will be discontinuing use of the Iowa individual income tax short form (IA 1040A) and the Iowa corporation income tax short form (IA 1120A) effective for tax

year 2013. Taxpayers who may have used these forms in the past will need to use the IA 1040 or IA 1120 beginning with tax year 2013. The Department estimates that 97 percent of current IA 1040A users will qualify to eFile for free. Visit the Department’s website for more details at www.iowa.gov/tax.

Also beginning for tax year 2013, individuals who itemize deductions on their Iowa returns will no longer have the option to substitute the Federal Schedule A for the Iowa Schedule A. Previously, taxpayers

who used the Federal Schedule A for Iowa purposes may have been required to make adjustments to the amounts on the federal schedule.

The Department believes requiring taxpayers to submit Iowa’s Schedule A will reduce the possibility of errors connected with those adjustments. In addition, the Iowa Schedule A includes lines for a proration calculation used by certain married taxpayers. Lines for that calculation are not part of the Federal Schedule A.

Barbecue judging class to be offered in Waterloo

On March 16 a group of Eastern Iowa barbecue enthusiasts will be hosting a barbecue judging class.

Most people love barbeque and have seen how big competition barbecue is today! There are large barbecue contests held in Waterloo, Waucoma, Dubuque, Mason City, Ottumwa, Rochester, Albert Lea, Independence and several others in other parts of Iowa and boardering states.

Competition cooks from Denver, Hudson, and Charles City will be preparing the samples for the class attendees.

When these contests occur many are sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and part of their regulations include the use of as many “certified” and educated judges as possible. In order to be considered “certified” you must attend a class taught by a K.C.B.S. instructor.

On March 16 a class will be held at the Waterloo Elks Club taught by K.C.B.S. Instructor Dave Londeen.

The class is 3-4 hours in length and includes sampling competition quality barbecue. Attendees also receive a one year K.C.B.S. Membership, membership badge, and the monthly newsletter “The Bullsheet”. Following the judges class a shorter class for the table captain’s role will be held.

If an attendee completes both classes they will be eligible to judge and be a table captain at any K.C.B.S. contest that has openings.

Those wishing to attend the judges class will only be allowed to judge barbecue contests.

The organizers of this class have arranged to secure a limited number of judging spots at the K.C.B.S. contests in Waterloo, Mason City, and Waucoma. There is a limit of 60 in the judges class.

Cougars climb back into West Division race ACKLEY — The AGWSR boys pulled back into the North Iowa Cedar League West Division race with a pair of victories last week, 61-55 over BCLUW and 56-44 over South Hardin.

The Cougars (7-3 overall, 4-2 in the NICL West) hosted Grundy Center Tuesday before playing a makeup game at South Tama Thursday and playing at East Marshall Friday.

AGWSR jumped ahead of BCLUW 36-23 at halftime before the Comets closed the gap to six after three quarters, 45-39.

Senior Austin Heitland scored a season-high 15 points to pace the AGWSR while freshman Nathan Karsjens came off the bench to score 15 and pull down eight rebounds and Sully Hofmeister added 13 points and eight assists.

Conner Ubben and Tanner Teske paced BCLUW (3-4, 0-4) with 12 points each.

AGWSR took control early and maintained it throughout in their 68-24 domination of Valley Lutheran on Saturday. The Cougars outscored the Crusaders 37-14 in the first half and 31-10 in the second half to take the 44 point win.

“We started the game with good intensity on both offensive and defensive ends and that allowed us to control the game right from the start,” AGWSR head coach Russ Banzhaf said. “It was great to get everyone involved in the game and get all players some meaningful playing time. We had 11 players score and all 14 who dressed got an opportunity to contribute.”

Derek Schipper scored 13, Dylan Heetland 12, and Austin Heitland 9 for the Cougars. Nathan Karjens led in rebounding with five and Sully Hofmeister led in assists with five. Evan Jannsen recorded three rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Owen Abkes also came away with three assists and three steals.

Aplington-Parkersburg 65, AGWSR 56 In a closely played game with Aplington-Parkersburg Thursday, AGWSR held a one point lead after the first quarter, and the game was tied 33-33 at the half and 47 all by the end of the third. The Falcons hit some key shots toward the end of the game to outscore the Cougars 18-9 in the final period and take the 65-56 win.

“I thought we played well for 27 to 28 minutes,” AGWSR head coach Russ Banzhaf said. “Coming off the Christmas break, you never know how things will go after 2-3 weeks without playing a game.

“We had a lead 51-50 with five minutes to go in the game, but A-P was able to hit a couple of three’s and jumped ahead,” he said. “We didn’t answer their run and had to play from behind the last few minutes of the game.”

Owen Abkes paced the Cougars with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Derek Schipper scored 12, Austin Heitland 10, and Evan Janssen nine. Grundy Center 47, GladbrookReinbeck 43 Katie Lindeman came through with some key baskets in the

closing moments to lift Grundy Center to a four point win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck, in yet another closely played game of NICL-West rivals last Tuesday.

“The girls really played well the first and fourth quarters offensively,” Coach Lindeman said. “We made some costly turnovers late in the third quarter which forced us to make some changes on the defensive end and the girls really responded. We made our free throws and finished strong for a nice conference win at home.”

Lindeman led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Spartans. Alyssa Mathews scored 10. Jes Ackerson provided seven assists and came

away with four steals.

Three Rebel players scored in double digits. Hayley Weber led with 12, Nicole Adair scored 11, and Amber Berendes added 10.

Cougars sweep busy week of wrestling

By JOHN JENSEN The Grundy Register ACKLEY — AGWSR opened the second half of its season with a flourish last week, picking up seven straight dual victories including an upset of No. 7 ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

The Cougars (14-2 in duals) opened the week with a pair of tight victories over Wapsie Valley and Aplington-Parkersburg in a triangular at Wapsie. The Cougars edged the host team 39-34 before scoring an even tighter 33-31 victory over A-P. The Cougars downed Wapsie Valley largely on the strength of their nearly full lineup, scoring just two contested victories while accepting five forfeits and giving up just one. Kolton Fryslie pinned Wapsie Valley’s Cam Jones at 120 pounds while Dakota Schwebke scored a 12-5 decision at 132.

AGWSR took two more forfeits against Aplington-Parkersburg while collecting six contested victories including falls from Miguel Reyes at 126, Schwebke at 132 and Clay Meinders at 220.

The Cougars had an easier time of things at St. Edmond, four of its five duals by 20 or more points.

They downed Boone 47-27, Prairie Valley 57-24, St. Edmond 39-31, Roland-Story 48-15 and West Hancock 56-12.

Three Cougars went undefeated on the day, each with a pair of falls.

Schwebke also had a technical fall while Brandon Johnson had a major decision in addition to his two pins.

Caleb Meiners also had a major decision while improving to 16-0 on the season.

The featured match of the day came in the AGWSR-St. Edmond match at 220 pounds where undefeated and fifth-ranked Clay Meinders of AGWSR faced undefeated and second-ranked Vinnie Harvey. Harvey got the best of Meinders, putting him on his back late in the first period and scoring the 1 minute, 56 second fall.

Rebel girls drop two close games

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent REINBECK – After earning two non-conference win upon their return from the holiday break, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls came up short in a pair of close NICL-West games this past week. The Rebels fell to East Marshall at home 4948 on Friday, after a 47-43 loss at Grundy Center on Tuesday.

“Since Christmas we have gone 2-2,” Rebel head coach Eric Crandall. “Back to conference play this week we lost two tough games.

Next week we play the current top two teams in the conference.”

Gladbrook-Reinbeck (4-6 overall, 2-5 NICL-West) was scheduled to play South Hardin at Eldora on Tuesday, Jan, 14, and host South Tama on Friday, Jan. 17.

East Marshall 49, GladbrookReinbeck 48 Gladbrook-Reinbeck took the early lead, 10-4 in the first quarter, but East Marshall came back in the second to take a 22-17 advantage at the halfway mark. The Rebels tied the game at 33 all by the end of the third period, and the game went down to the wire in the fourth with the Mustangs squeaking out a one point win.

Hanna Christopher led the Rebels with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Amber Berendes scored 14 and Nicole Adair contributed four assists and four steals to the Rebel cause.

Ashley Allen paced the Mustangs with 15 points. Taylor Fricke scored 12 and Mariah Fritz 10.

Grundy Center 47, GladbrookReinbeck 43 Much like many of the NICLWest matchups this season, rivals Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Grundy Center would go head to head until the end Tuesday night on the Spartans’ home court. The fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as the Spartans outscored the Rebels 18-8 to reclaim the lead for the final time and take the win by four.

The Rebels were led by Hayley Weber’s 12 points. Nicole Adair and Amber Berendes added 11 and 10 each. Hanna Christopher led the boards with seven rebounds and in steals with eight.

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center boys fell to two tough NICL-West opponents this past week, bowing to West Marshall 67-55 on Friday, and to GladbrookReinbeck 81-55 on Tuesday.

Grundy Center (3-7 overall, 3-3 NICL-West) was slated for a full week of competition this week, playing AGWSR at Ackley on Tuesday, Jan. 14, Valley Lutheran and BCLUW at home on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Friday, Jan. 17, and going on the road to face East Marshall at Le Grand on Saturday, Jan. 18.

West Marshall 67, Grundy Center 55 Grundy Center struggled to keep pace with West Marshall from the start, and found themselves down 39-21 at the halfway mark. Though they outscored the Trojans 18-12 in the third quarter and matched them at 16 in the fourth, the Spartans couldn’t overcome the first half deficit, and West Marshall took the win by a 12 point margin.

“West Marshall really shot the ball well from the three-point line in the first half, due mainly to us not finding their hot shooters and getting on them quick enough,” Grundy Center head coach Rollie Ackerman said.

“We got ourselves too far behind by halftime for us to come all the way back against a quality team, but in some ways we played our best half of basketball in the second half,” he said. “The guys came out and worked extremely hard on defense, we were much more unselfish offensively, we

reduced the number of turnovers drastically, and as a result our offensive execution improved and we rebounded the ball much better.”

Four Spartans hit double digit scoring marks. Brady Hook led with 15 points, Jack Stumberg scored 13, Austin Burroughs added 12, and Jordan Stoner 11. Hook also contributed 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot to the Spartan cause.

Stumberg had four assists, and Sam Thompson came away with five rebounds and two steals..

Reggie Gradwell paced the Trojans with 27 points, Matt Van Metre scored 13, and Duncan Ferch added 11.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 81, Grundy Center 55 On Tuesday, longtime Rivals Grundy Center and GladbrookReinbeck put on a fast-paced, nip and tuck show for the fans in the first half, with the Spartans holding a two point advantage at the end of the first quarter, and the Rebels taking a seven point lead at the half. In the second half GladbrookReinbeck widened the gap by

nine more in the third quarter and another eight in the fourth to take a sizable 81-55 win.

“Taking on G-R and West Marshall in the same week was a real challenge for us to stay in the hunt to stay towards the top of the conference,” Coach Ackerman said.

“Against G-R, we had too many turnovers late in the third quarter to let a close four point game get away from us.

“I was very disappointed in the loss as we wasted a fine performance by several of the players and a great opportunity,” he said.

Austin Burroughs led the Spartans with 16 points, Jordan Clapp added nine, and Jordan Stoner and Brady Hook chipped in eight apiece. Hook led in rebounds with four, assists with nine and steals with two.

Joe Smoldt paced the Rebels with 21 points. Cam Kickbush scored 17, Chase Clark 11, and Luke Holman 10.

Rebels fall to D-NH in shootout

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent WAVERLY – The GladbrookReinbeck boys’ basketball team went 2-1 this past week, earning a couple of NICL-West wins over Grundy Center and East Marshall, before falling in an East-West matchup to Dike-New Hartford at the NICL shootout on the campus of Wartburg College on Saturday.

The Rebels (8-2 overall, 4-1 NICL-West) were scheduled to face South Hardin at Eldora on Tuesday, Jan. 14, before returning to their home court to host South Tama on Friday, Jan. 17.

WAVERLY — Carson Parker set career highs with 37 points and 15 rebounds Saturday as Dike-New Hartford rallied past North Iowa Cedar League West Division coleader Gladbrook-Reinbeck 71-54 Saturday in the North Iowa Cedar League Challenge at Wartburg College.

Parker, who scored 34 and 33 in games earlier this season, hit 15-of-22 shot attempts against the Rebels, including 4-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc. He was also 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. His rebound total was three better than his previous career high, set earlier this year.

The Wolverines needed a half to get back into their rhythm in their first action since Dec. 20 and trailed 39-34 at halftime. They came out on fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Rebels 24-8 to take control of the game.

Cole Wildeboer added eight points for the winners while Gabe Eiklenborg and Byron Fritch scored seven each. Zach Pierce led Gladbrook-Reinbeck with 15 points.

The Wolverines hosted Columbus Catholic Tuesday and play at Union on Friday.

REINBECK — Ethan Erhardt and Tristan Johanningmeier scored a pair of wins each Thursday, leading the Gladbrook-Reinbeck/North Tama/Grundy Center wrestling team in a double dual at Jesup.

Wrestling without senior leader Omar Martinez, the Rebelhawks fell to Denver-Tripoli 72-12 and dropped a 60-15 decision to the host team. Both of Erhardt’s wins came via fall while Johanningmeier scored a fall and a 6-0 decision.

The Rebelhawks also struggled to a seventh-place finish in its own tournament Saturday.

Erhardt was GRNTGC’s top finisher in third place at 120 pounds while Johanningmeier was fourth at 145, Parker Bown fourth at 170 and Tony Weber fourth at 220.

Dike-New Hartford won the tournament with 214 points, topping second-place Sigourney-Keota by 44.

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent REINBECK – Six individual champions and two runnersups led the Dike-New Hartford Wolverine wrestlers to the team title at the GRNTGC Invitational on Saturday.

“We wrestled pretty well,” DikeNew Hartford head coach Tony Norton said. “It was a fun day with lots of exciting matches. It was a

great team effort.”

“We started the day strong, and even better, finished strong,” Norton said. “Hopefully the kids all enjoyed the team championship and will continue to work hard in practice and continue to show improvement each time that we wrestle.”

Individual champions for DikeNew Hartford included Kody Kugel at 113, Dakota Callan at 120, Trent Johnson at 126, Levi Lynch at 182,

Brice Beninga at 195, and Lucas DePriest at 220. Placing second for the Wolverines were Zach Nichol at 106 and Tommy Irvin at 285. Blaine Becker placed third at 152, Alex Mooty and Nick Durnin went fourth at 132 and 138, Connor Ragsdale finished fifth at 160, and Nick Nielsen placed sixth at 145.

Earlier in the week the Wolverines swept a double dual at Hudson, defeating BCLUW 49-19

and Hudson 40-37. Kody Kugel, Dakota Callan, Trent Johnson, Connor Ragsdale, and Tommy Irvin all went 2-0 on the night. Spartan girls fall to West Marshall Cougars stun previously unbeaten South Hardin

By PATTI RUST Sports Correspondent GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center girls’ basketball team went 1-1 in two close NICLWest contests this past week. The Spartans fell to West Marshall 4135 on Friday, after earning a 47-44 win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday.

The Spartans (5-5 overall, 2-4 NICL-West) were scheduled for a busy four game week, playing AGWSR at Ackley on Tuesday, Jan. 14, followed by two home games with Valley Lutheran on Thursday, Jan. 16, and BCLUW on Friday, Jan. 17. They will close out the week with a makeup game with East Marshall at Le Grand on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3:30 p.m.

West Marshall 41, Grundy Center 35 The lead changed hands several times in the low scoring game between Grundy Center and West Marshall on Friday. The Trojans led by two at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans were up by one at the half, and the Trojans took a two point lead again at the end of the third. Cold shooting by the Spartans and a rebounding advantage by the Trojans gave West Marshall the win by six.

“We did not get out to a very strong start in the first quarter and did not shoot the ball from the field or free throw line, which ultimately was the difference, only scoring 35 points,” Spartan head coach Matt Lindeman said.

Allison Jansen and Jessica Ackerson led the Spartans with 11 and nine points respectively. Katie Lindeman led in rebounds with eight and Ackerson also led in steals

with four.

Madison Streeter led West Marshall with 13 points, and Georgia Porter and Gabby Ryerson scored nine apiece.

ACKLEY — AGWSR team threw a monkey wrench into the North Iowa Cedar League West Division girls’ basketball race Friday night with one of the area’s biggest upsets of the season, 62-49 over previously undefeated South Hardin.

The Cougars, who had dropped two of three games coming into the week, also downed BCLUW 56-35 Tuesday for their largest margin of victory this year. They hosted Grundy Center Tuesday before playing a makeup game at South Tama Thursday and playing at East Marshall Friday.

AGWSR 56, BCLUW 35 The Cougars drained a seasonhigh nine 3-pointers while dominating BCLUW. They led by just two points, 7-5, after a quarter before outscoring the Comets 21-4 in the second period to take control.

Madi Fryslie paced the Cougars with 16 points while freshman Alana Groninga scored a careerhigh 12 points and Becca Wiarda chipped in eight points and seven rebounds. Haley Veldhouse led BCLUW with seven points.

AGWSR 62, South Hardin 49 The Cougars won a rough-andtumble game as South Hardin fell for the first time in nine contests.

They outscored the Tigers in every quarter while improving to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in the division.

Defense was the key for AGWSR, as it held South Hardin to 33 percent from the field and collected 11 steals. The Cougars shot 40 percent and held a 36-25 rebounding edge.
