Detroit Free Press Marathon Announces New Title Sponsor The Detroit Free Press Marathon announced today the addition of Talmer Bank and Trust as its co-title sponsor. Formerly First Michigan Bank, Talmer Bank and Trust is now the fifth-largest Michigan based bank, with 54 branches, more than 800 employees and $2.3 billion in assets. "We are proud to welcome Talmer Bank and Trust as the co-title sponsor. We look forward to working with Talmer Bank to develop a partnership that enhances the event for all of our participants,” said Rich Harshbarger, executive race director. “Race weekend could not happen without the support of our sponsors, volunteers and the help of so many others. Talmer Bank’s investment is truly an investment in our community,” Harshbarger said. "We are excited to play a key role in the Detroit Free Press Marathon, which continues to challenge and push people to reach new achievements in their lives,” said David Provost, chairman, president and CEO of Talmer Bank and Trust. “Events such as this enrich our community and bring people together for health information, fitness and plain old fun.” More information on Talmer Bank and Trust can be found at their website http://www.talmerbank.com." Detroit Free Press-Talmer Bank Marathon: http://freepmarathon.com -- Detroit Free Press-Talmer Bank Marathon news release Calling All Fast Milers: Capitol Bancorp Mile Offers Prize Money Andy Marsh alerted us to this new event for milers on May 21 in Lansing: "The Capitol Bancorp Mile/5K, one of our races in the Playmakers Race Series, has changed this year and is now a competitive 1 Mile Run along with their usual 5K. Plus, people can run in both races for no additional charge. . . . The race has over $2,500 (US Only) prize money for the mile. We would love to see a very competitive mile and are just trying to get the word out. "Athletes seeking free entry: We invite our elite runners (1M: Men - 4:10 minutes or less and women 4:45 minutes or less, 5K: Men - 15:00 minutes or less and women - 17:00 minutes or less) to contact us at 517.487.6555 to obtain registration fee waivers." http://www.capitolbancorp5k.com/ NPR: University of Alabama Women's Track Team at Drake Relays NPR transcribed the report, "The Game Goes On" which was broadcast Tuesday, May 3:, "Talaya Owens is on the university's women's track team, which decided at the last minute to attend a key track meet in Des Moines last weekend. It was a tough call: Eleven of the team's athletes were displaced. The team didn't do quite as well as they'd hoped — they were tired, stressed out and their flight was so late they barely made the meet. But the thousands gathered cheered them like they were the home team. "I must have gotten — and I lost count — 20 or 30 hugs as I was trying to get over to Bekah to coach her. The announcer was phenomenal, he put me in tears three times," says Coach Sandy Fowler. Bekah Hoppis lost her home just days before the meet. Things have been tough for Owens as well. The tornado hit her off-campus home, shattering the windows just as she and a roommate took shelter in a first-floor hallway. The cheers at the meet eased the pain, and helped her and three teammates win the 4x100 hurdles. P. 4

The youth grants typically fund such expenses as uniforms, travel expenses, equipment and entry fees. Interested parties may fill out the USATF Foundation grant application online at http://www.usatffoundation.org. The Foundation will be reviewing the applications over the next few weeks and applicants are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible to receive consideration. It was an exciting and fun weekend in the Big Apple. Flew into New York City on Thursday morning before the storms got intense and they had a semi closure of the airport due to all the storms. That’s why I always fly in the early morning. As they say, “The early bird gets the worm.” I ran my six mile loop in Central Park between the storm systems ravaging the city. It was a great day to run as I could smell all the trees blooming, especially after a fresh rain. There’s nothing like running in Central Park. In the evening went to a Margarita party celebrating Cinco De Mayo a week early. The party was put on by the New York Athletic Club’s Running Intra Club. Great way to forget about all the storms that were pounding the USA over the last 24 hours. Friday I was over by the United Nations checking out the renovation of the building. I don't know when it is supposed to be done but major work is being done on the building and there P. 6

are temporary buildings on the ground. Some friends who work there are not sure when everything will be done, but diplomacy continues in other buildings around the city until the UN building reopens completely. I get my run in at Central Park in the afternoon and it’s a light crowd-- probably because people are thinking about doing a couple of events which will be in the park over the weekend. The events are the Revlon 5k on Saturday and Bike the Five Boroughs on Sunday-- a 42 mile bike ride around the city that gets thousands of cyclists to come out. I didn't plan on doing either one.

Saturday my friend who was born in Kenya and is now an American citizen accompanied me on a hike across the George Washington Bridge. It's just a little short of a mile long but it is one impressive structure. Built in 1927 and completed in 1931 it was the world’s longest suspension bridge until the Golden Gate bridge was built. It connects New Jersey with New York City over the Hudson River. Since it was Little Red Lighthouse built lanes have been added on the main bridge and in 1962 a lower bridge called Martha, George Washington’s wife's name, was added. This gave the bridge fourteen lanes-- the most lanes on any suspension bridge in the world. Fourteen million vehicles a year go over it, making it the most-used vehicle bridge in the world. Remember, this is New York! I have always wanted to walk across this bridge and just look at the skyline of New York City. As we are walking across the bridge we meet a cyclist from the UK (United Kingdom) who had just ridden across the USA in twenty days. He told us he rode over 2900 miles and he did it solo. That's fantastic! He told me his ride is available on a website, but I can't remember it. Three cyclists from New York City were going to ride with him into the city. Never know whom you're going to meet. As we get to the other side, we go over to Fort Lee State Park. This is a fantastic view point loaded with history. Fort Lee was a major fort for the Americans in the Revolutionary war. Cannons were placed here to sink British troop supply ships going up the Hudson during the war. Now it's the place to get great pictures with the George Washington Bridge in the background. As we were walking back across it, I look down and thought it would be cool to hang glide off this bridge. At over 200 feet above the water there's plenty of leeway. I don't think the Port Authority would like it. We get back to the New York side and have to go down some stairs through a tunnel over a road to get to the bike path on the Hudson. We go check out the Little Red Lighthouse under the bridge. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, it was reconstructed in 1921 or restored then, depending on P. 8

how you interpret the plaque. The lighthouse is no longer needed, but it's a cool spot that New Yorkers cherish. When tearing down the lighthouse was proposed, New Yorkers protested. Thank goodness they did because the Lighthouse, just like it is, is a cool spot to be under the bridge. For the next four miles we walk along the Hudson on this bike-hike path. There is plenty of parkland along the Hudson and lots of people are out enjoying themselves on a sunny 65 degree day. We finally get to the subway, get dinner and get ready for tomorrow's adventure. Sunday morning comes with another 4:00 am wake-up call from my iPhone. We take a taxi across town at 4:45 am and see lot's of people still partying the night away. We get dropped off at Madison Square Garden and go downstairs to Penn Station to catch the 5:07 am train to Long Branch, New Jersey for the New Jersey Marathon-Half Marathon. This is a special train that New Jersey transit setups for the marathon and it stops along the way to pickup more marathoners and spectators for the race. As we were riding along, I looked out the window and watched the sun come over the horizon. It was going to be a beautiful day. We get dropped off and walk almost a mile to the start-finish area. We get there and we are right on the ocean. I've always heard about the Jersey Shore and now I'm here. It's a great beach with a long boardwalk. What's interesting is that I've been to Long Branch three times before at Fort Monmouth, which isn't near the beach. Fort Monmouth is where I did the National 40k race walk championship. Life is kind of like a big circle, and it just keeps going around. This is the 15th edition of this race and there are 11,000 runners in all of the events-- a record field like every race now. My friend was pacing someone the first half. I filmed the start and walked the half marathon. I was out there for three hours stopping to film and take pictures on the course. The course

was picturesque, with ocean views, blooming trees and nice homes. The all-flat course, no wind, and a sunny 60 degree day were perfect for racing. The last mile on the course was on the oceanfront boardwalk and spectators were everywhere. Bands were playing and bar-restaurants were filled with runners and spectators. This is a very nice marathon and if you're in this area around the first of May, I highly recommend doing it. We went to an after-race party somewhere in New Jersey and then got a ride back into the city. Called it a night and flew back to Michigan Monday morning. It was a whirlwind weekend as it is every time I go to New York. If you want excitement, adventure and things to do, go to the Big Apple. Till next time, keep on running. The 21st annual event had an emotional beginning as Dr. Harold Schynders, who suffered a heart attack while walking in last year's Classic, served as honorary starter. Schynders introduced Alex and Jan Antalis of Fort Wayne, Ind., Calvin parents and the persons who immediately attended to him last year and helped saved his life. Alex is a physician and Jan a nurse. Hagen took first place among women with a time of 18:31, while McSween ran the 3.1-mile course in 16:27. The school challenge competition was won by Byron Center Christian (number of registrations), and the corporate challenge winner was Team Racir (competitive finish scoring). The Calvin Spring Classic is a TAC-certified run entirely on Calvin College campus roads, starting and ending near the Prince Conference Center and taking runners under the East Beltline, through campus roadways to East Paris Avenue and back.M The Karen Muyskens Family Fun Run is named after the late Dr. Karen Muyskens, a Calvin chemistry professor.
