Pirat was Jochen Schleese’s partner in many successful three-day event competitions in Europe. By 1984, it was already too late, as signs of Pirat’s increasing lameness put an all too early end to his career. Jochen searched for answers, conferring with professionals to confirm the diagnosis — irreparable cartilage damage at the scapula. It wasn’t until later that Jochen understood how the construction of his saddle caused the lameness.

Over 32 Years of Success It’s hard to believe that more than 30 years have passed since we began Schleese Saddlery Service in a little 100 sq.ft. shop off the side of what was the IESS (International Equestrian Sport Services) just outside of Newmarket, Ontario. This was the venue of the 1986 World Dressage Championships, and the reason for our emigration from Germany. Back then it was just Jochen and me – but we soon added another saddler from Germany and our first apprentice. We still have a copy of the first invoice we wrote; and the first dollar we ever made is hanging framed in our front lobby. Over the years we have undergone three moves and at least twice that many extensions/renovations to where we are today in our facility in Holland Landing, Ontario. The 9000+ sq.ft. shop is again bursting at the seams, but it has become home to more than 35 employees with many family members on our team.

Over the years we have probably worked with over 150,000 horses, made over 80 different saddle models (some more successful and long-lived than others). We have employees who have been with us over 20 years and pride ourselves at offering the best benefits in the equestrian industry to our valuable people. Many of our employees are riders, and the education and training we offer – in both sales and production – are second to none in the world. The passion we all feel and the difference we can make in the comfort and protection of horse and rider make all the difference in defining a legacy vs. just a job . We are firm believers in “no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Well – Schleese cares. We invite you to find this out for yourself

80-Point Saddle Fit Evaluation As a proud member of Saddlefit 4 Life® (S4L), we are very dedicated in following the S4L philosophy, including the 80-point Saddle Fit Evaluation. Find out how well your saddle fits you and your horse in this comprehensive evaluation. Your on-site personal assessment includes dynamic and static measurements, assessments, and analysis of horse, rider and saddle. This will help you to ride in a saddle, fitted for optimal comfort and freedom to allow healthy back movement. 55 Points to Horse Measurements using the wither gauge and Arc Device™ include: length of saddle support area (SSA), width of spine, symmetry and size of shoulders, height, width and size of withers, musculature; shoulder blade angle and width; curvature and width of the back; signs of stress and sensitivity – to name a few. Optional diagnostic measurement tools are available upon requests. 25 Points to Rider Assessment includes fit of your current saddle, your gender and build, seat size, flap length, flap angle, seat depth and support, position, balance and level of comfort. Various measurements and ratios are considered - upper leg, lower leg, hip, thigh height, weight, training level of horse and rider to name a few.

Schleese’s Diagnostic Procedure Dynamic assessment of: saddle, dust pattern, riding, behaviours, movement and position, before and after adjustment. Static assessment and measurements of: tree integrity, condition of billets, stitches and leather, saddle pad, saddle length, billet position, gullet width, vertical and horizontal panels and saddle support area (SSA) of the horse. Saddles Demo saddles or your own saddles are adjusted to the horse’s conformation for the rider to experience the ‘wow’ feeling of optimal fit during the ride analysis. Tack The proper fit of your bridle (snaffle or double bridle) is extremely important to ensure you bypass the facial nerves. Material, length, shape and style place a huge role in comfort and performance of your horse. Scheduling your Saddle Sit Evaluation Visit our website for upcoming saddle fitting events in your area, or contact us to arrange a date for an event at your barn.

The detailed information you provide when you register on-line in advance helps us to address your needs. A Schleese Clinic Coordinator or your saddle fit event host will provide appointment times. We are happy to provide custom posters to organizers to help spread the word. Arriving 30 minutes before your appointment time allows you to prepare to ride (helmets are required). Plan to spend 45-120 minutes with our Saddle Ergonomists depending on your needs. A written report explaining the issues with recommended solutions is provided at the end of your appointment. Fitting Options for Remote Locations Our long distance fitting kit is a good option if you cannot attend a saddle fit clinic. The Schleese back simulator, tracings, videos and pictures of your horse’s back together with your saddle can be sent to our office for servicing. Questions? Our friendly customer service staff are happy to help. Contact info@schleese.com or 800.225.2242.

Schleese’s Principles Each Certified Equine and Saddle Ergonomist is trained by a team of instructors and certified by Jochen Schleese, CMS, CSFT, CSE. We maintain our leadership in the industry with the highest standards for diagnostic evaluation worldwide and require professional re-certification every two years. Julia Curtis R.E.M.T., CSFT, CSE Fit is Everything. | 13

Ultimate Diagnostic Experience We strive to maintain our leadership in the industry by using the highest standards of diagnostic evaluation and ongoing service to ensure your satisfaction. In addition to the innovative measuring devices used by Schleese as an option during the evaluation, we are excited to offer cutting edge technology for those wanting a more detailed analysis of the horse’s back. ®

The German engineered HorseShape takes a 3D image of the horse’s back to assist in custom building or custom fitting a saddle. An optional 3D printout is sent directly to the client to allow comparisons of change over time. Extremely beneficial for young horses, or horses in training, the fitter will use ® HorseShape measurements to refit the saddle periodically for optimal performance and a better riding experience.*

The Back Simulator is a sturdy, accurate way to measure saddle fit without us having to see the horse. The Back Simulator is shipped from our head office to the rider with an easy instruction to take the horse’s three-dimensional back shape measurements. When the information is send back to head office, it allows us to manufacture and/or fit your saddle long distance when you don’t have access to a Saddle Fit Technician on site.

The Topographer PRO® by EquiScan consists of 11 individually moving sectioned arms which are laid across the horse’s back. Each individual number on each segment is recorded into a computer system and kept on file to show changes in the horse’s three-dimensional back over time. 14 | © 2018. Schleese Saddlery Service Ltd. No more subjective opinions...

Facts are based in numerical data and outputs! The flexible MediLogic® Saddle Pad enables us to see the pressure distribution on the horses back while the horse is in movement over jumps or while doing flat work. The complex interaction of forces between horse, saddle and rider is measured during relevant motion phases or while standing. In subsequent analysis with the MediLogic® software, it becomes apparent in which phases of motion and where under the saddle undesirable pressure peaks occur. Together with the influence of speed and the weight of the rider, the effect of pressure distribution on riding technique can be analyzed. ®

Thermographic imaging using the FLIR TG165 Spot Thermal Camera shows where pressure points from your saddle occur. Easy analysis allows us to address potential problem areas and pressure sensitivities on your horse’s back before they arise, allowing us to address adjustment and fit solutions that are customized for you and your horse.

The Seaver Anatomical Girth with built-in Heart Rate Monitor lets you view results on an app in real time. It differentiates left and right handside movements in the gaits; vertical and horizontal jump heights, and time spent in each gait along with recovery times. The girth can also determine your horse’s stress levels - all of which is indicative of how well a saddle fits and performs! * With advance notification, pending your location, these services can be provided to you for an additional charge. Fit is Everything. | 15

Educational Lectures & Demonstrations Any of our qualified Saddle Fit Technicians will be happy to work with our clinic coordinators and organizers to schedule a one hour preparatory complimentary lecture at the barn for your boarders and our clients. This brief overview on the 9 points of saddle fit will make your personal evaluation much more enlightening and enjoyable! For information on complimentary lectures, please contact info@schleese.com. Maintaining Optimal Fit

As your horse develops there will be changes in his 3-dimensional back shape and in the saddle support area, which changes the fit of your saddle. You may notice the balance is off, or even a change in your horse’s behaviour. The infinitely adjustable gullet plate in our AdapTree® allows us to make necessary adjustments using the SaddleSizer™ Tree Machine to accommodate changes in the wither area, shoulder angles and shoulder width, caused by ongoing growth and development. Meet our Authorized Representatives at schleese.com/meet-our-saddle-fitters/ Shown: Natalie Sauner, CSFT, CSE Certified Saddle Fit Technician Fit is Everything. | 17

Innovation for You and Your Horse Inspired by the feedback of riders and equine professionals, we are committed to ongoing research and innovation to create the most technologically advanced saddles on the market. We specialize in helping riders ride comfortably and effectively in gender specific saddles designed to promote back health for horse and rider. Every saddle ordered is custom made according to extensive horse and rider measurements, analyses and recommendations using the 80-Point Saddle Fit Evaluation. The AdapTree® and Lightweight AdapTree® - Promoting health for horse and rider Caring from the inside out, the Schleese AdapTree® is the first tree which adapts to the horse’s bio-mechanical movements. Through the calculation and implication of the rider’s weight, the AdapTree® is fitted and infinitely adjustable at any time by one of our authorized Certified Saddle Fit Technicians or Saddle Ergonomists. 1. Flexible Tree of Polyurethane (patent-4X6-300DPI) provides complete freedom of motion and comfort, flexing with your horse’s lateral movement to improve connection and communication. 2. Infinitely Adjustable Gullet Plate allows us to make necessary adjustments using the SaddleSizer™ Tree Machine to accommodate changes in the saddle support area as your horse grows and develops. The seat size is available in half sizes from 15” to 18.5”. 3. Rear-facing, Shock Absorbing Tree Points allow shoulders to rotate freely upwards/ backwards preventing potential chipping of scapular cartilage. 4. Panel Design for maximum weight bearing surface and pressure dispersal over the saddle support area to provide ultimate support, comfort and freedom. Half, three-quarter or full panels meet the needs of every horse (on various models). 18 | © 2018. Schleese Saddlery Service Ltd. All Rights Reserved.

5. Shoulder Relief (in the vertical panels) are innovative cut back areas behind the scapula to free up shoulders, providing a full range of motion and freedom in the sensitive trapezius area/ intersection of nerve endings. ¾ or ½ independent shoulder relief available on all models. Note: Pressure on the shoulder or trapezius muscle acts like a hand brake, causing the horse to reflexively hollow its back and resist the aids. 6. Gullet Channel is extra wide to protect the spinal processes and dorsal ligament system. A slight widening towards the cantle allows ultimate flexibility of the vertebrae for easier lateral work. This will also prevent damage to spinal processes and vertebrae. 7. Seat Comfort is obtained through our Patented Crotch Comfort™, a padded cut-out air pocket in the crotch area designed for riders who have problems with saddles that have too much pressure in the front. This allows female riders to sit straight on their seat bones and relieves pressure on the front pelvic area (a benefit for women and men). It also includes a customized seat foam and seat mattress to provide various balance points for the seat. Both the twist (width of tree at the upper inner thigh) and waist (seaming in the pelvic area) accommodate individual rider preference. Seat curve and foaming options provide added comfort and stability and preferred balance points for your position. 8. Revolutionary PSI Panel , developed by Schleese, has a pounds per square inch reducing element integrative into the panel to increase the maximum weight bearing surface area while creating a very narrow twist for the rider. Wrapped with a unique blue carbon fiber-print material, the PSI panel is revolutionary in innovation. 9. Our Bi-NateLine® (BNL) saddles are made on our infinitely adjustable lightweight patented AdapTree® which outperforms any other tree on the market today. This tree offers an industry-changing extreme close contact to the horse, soft-ride seat and an extra narrow twist. It also requires fewer adjustment due to the standard PSI panel. The Bi-NateLine® not only combines form with function but provides the lowest pounds per square inch pressure distribution on the horse’s back with the PSI panel. It will support a longer-lasting softer, closer saddle fitting. Infinitely adjustable Schleese Saddles are custom designed for female riders delivering maximum comfort and help prevent back injury for both you and your horse. Fit is Everything. | 19

The Development of the Schleese Revolutionary PSI Panel In our ongoing quest for innovation and our constant commitment to bringing the most advanced and scientifically supported products to the market, we introduce to you our revolutionary PSI Panel System, bringing the past back to the future, while creating a super close contact feel for the rider to the horse. Our ability to ensure an optimal fit to the Saddle Support Area of the horse has been taken to the next level with our PSI Panel System! We can distribute the weight of the rider and saddle in this area much better, while even reducing the pressure per square inch to well below accepted industry standards. This is especially ideal for horses with a smaller saddle support area and today’s larger riders. Reducing the pressure per square inch helps optimaize the horse’s development and performance while ensuring a pain-free ride. We are well ahead of the industry in our ability to fit all shapes and sizes of horses and riders with a variety of models, fully adjustable trees and various panel configurations. Our panel designs allow us to fit all saddle support areas and wither conformations, while still ensuring the rider has the appropriate seat size. Accommodating the continuing shortening of the horse’s back (as a result of breeding trends) has made saddle fit a true combination of art and science. For more exciting scientific background information on the PSI Panel System, please visit our schleese.com.

$2,995*

“I recently had the chance to try a saddle that finally fits me! I rode in the 15.5” Schleese Bonita dressage saddle. I only stand at 4’3” tall and the first issue is my leg length in comparison to flap length and being able to have a physical contact and connection with a horse! The second issue I usually face is the fact saddles are way too wide and stretch me to the point of doing the splits while riding and tearing my muscles in the groin from stress and too wide a twist. Although I may be the height of a child, I am nonetheless a fully grown 25 year old woman, with developed hips and pelvis just like an average height woman. The Bonita may be considered a pony saddle and more a saddle for younger children, but really any petite rider would be amazed at the comfort and connection it can bring to horse and rider, it’s astounding! I recommend any petite ladies or gentleman to give it a try and disregard the fact that it’s a “youth and pony” saddle. It’s just another saddle model made to perfection by Schleese to cater to petite statured people of all ages!” K. Rothery and ‘Tucker’

You have the last word...

“Damon has improved a lot in the Obrigado saddle in less than two weeks. The bumps along his spine on the left side are almost gone and he is cantering much more comfortably. The biggest change is in the muscles just behind the saddle; they are actually loose and moving with each step (not the case in other saddles). I am very encouraged by these changes. At Wellington, we won both of his classes with high score of 80.8%; we received our highest marks ever at the canter, 8.5. Thank you.”

Nancy Smith Wellington, FL

“I love my new Infinity II. My horse just seems more powerful, lifting her back and using her shoulders more. She is reaching for the bit more and is steadier in the contact, more willing to move laterally. I love the sitting phase of rising trot; I come into this soft, balanced place and feel I can adjust my position more readily. Thank you so much for giving me and my horse this wonderful gift!” Robin Gray Hockley, TX

“My 12 year old PRE, classically Baroque in shape - short back, big shoulders, wide chest, and thick muscled mutton withers, is a real saddle fit challenge. In the Obrigado he went from stiff on the bit and hollow through the body, to yielding in all places, rounding into contact and actually executing a 10 metre volte softly with no resistance. The counter canter no longer felt like I was seated on a whirling blender, with my horse twisting wildly under me as we came around corners. The canter was up in front and I started exclaiming about my new horse! When I dismounted, for the first time in 2 ½ years I had no pain in my lower back or left hip. My legs weren’t even stiff. The saddle literally corrected my posture each time I felt myself slipping. It helped me regain that ‘three point seat’ and there was no constant dragging my legs back to get them into position. I could not believe the fit of a saddle could make such a difference not only for my horse but for me! I actually apologized to my horse for putting him through 2 ill- fitting saddles.” Kelly Buziak Edmonton, AB

“You really make us feel like you care and understand”. Before getting my custom fitted Schleese saddle, my mare, Rubi, was experiencing back problems. Being gray and a very sensitive horse, the slightest saddle misfit translates into major skin irritation and hollowing/ twisting of the back. After riding her in a Schleese saddle for a year, including a demanding show season, her back is now perfect! With her back being stronger and freer, her canter is also more powerful. I’m so grateful for Jochen’s master skills as a saddle fitter and biomechanics expert: a lot of knowledge goes into these precise fittings. A special thank you to everyone involved in customer service, you really make us feel like you care and understand and are always trying to help. A big thank you from both Rubi and I. Melanie Bourque Quebec, Canada

“I’ve been riding in my new Obrigado for a week and it has truly been magical! Thank you for an informative & fantastic fitting session. I really appreciate your time spent answering all my questions. The horses have a new ‘turbo boost’ behind the saddle and you can see the engagement of the hind legs. Thanks again!!”

JoAnne Bonnell Wright City, MO

“My 17 y/o Hano had been off and on again for half a year and for the first time in his life missed out on championships due to lameness. I was crushed and struggling with contemplating retiring my lifetime show partner and best friend. I bought him a new HK, really as a hail Mary. I’m a nurse, not a millionaire, and really struggled badly with buyer’s remorse once home. I was determined to return the saddle, feeling this was a snake oil indulgence. But it wasn’t. Every time I rode, I could feel he was better and better. He actually went sounder. Now at 18, going on 19, he has been absolutely sound for an entire year -never missed one day. He went to championships this year and scored well. He is happy and productive. Thank you for keeping my dear friend going. I would happily buy again!!” Lynn La Caze Ramona, CA

Saddle Fit to Rider Checklist Courtesy of Saddlefit 4 Life® If the saddle doesn’t fit the rider well, the rider’s pain and discomfort will translate down to the horse and the saddle will never fit the horse correctly. This checklist will help you determine if the saddle fits you well. Yes No

1. Does your leg hang comfortably and loosely straight down? 2. Is the saddle comfortable for you between your upper inner thighs (this is where the twist is)? 3. Do you feel ‘pulled apart’ in this area (soreness in the hips)? 4. Can you feel your seat bones? 5. Are the stirrup bars in the correct position to allow you to achieve the shoulder-hipheel straight line? 6. Is your knee comfortably placed on the flap (not angled outward)? 7. Is the flap visible behind your leg when you are in the stirrups? 8. Can you perform a pelvic tilt (forwards and backwards movement) comfortably without pain at your pubic symphysis or in the crotch area? 9. Do your thigh/knee rolls support you? 10. Can you post comfortably? 11. Is there enough room in front and behind your pelvis so that during posting you don’t hit your pubic bone? 12. During sitting trot you are thrown out of the saddle at the cantle area? 13. Is the saddle flap long enough so your boot top doesn’t catch on it? 14. Is the seat seam comfortable and unnoticeable? 15. Do you have enough support from the saddle to be able to sit properly in position while the horse is walking? 64 | © 2018. Saddle Fit to Horse Checklist Courtesy of Saddlefit 4 Life® Your saddle affects the way you ride and the way your horse performs. The nine points of saddle fitting will help you determine if your saddle fits your horse well, providing the saddle fits the rider. Yes No

1. Balance: Is the center of the saddle parallel to the ground while on the horse’s back? 2. Wither Clearance: Is the clearance all around the withers 2-3 fingers (mutton withers will have more clearance and high withers will have less clearance)? 3. Gullet Channel Width: Is the gullet wide enough not to interfere with the spinal processes or musculature of the horse’s back (3-5 fingers)? 4. Full Panel Contact: Does the panel ideally touch the horse’s back evenly all the way from front to back (some panels may be designed off the back end to allow the back to come up during engagement)? 5. Billet Alignment: Do the billets hang perpendicular towards the girthing area of the horse (gravity will pull your saddle forward if this is not the case)? 6. Saddle Length: Does your saddle sit in the saddle support area? (The SSA is the area between the base of the withers and the 18th thoracic vertebra – where the ribcage ends. The shoulder and loin areas should not carry any weight of the saddle and rider)? 7. Saddle Straightness: Does the saddle fall off to one side when viewed from back or front (the tree points should be behind the scapulae)? 8. Saddle Tree Angle: Are the panel tree points parallel to the shoulder angle? 9. Saddle Tree Width: Is the tree wide enough for saddle to fit during dynamic movement of the horse (the tree pinch at the shoulder and twist during motion)? ver the past few years, there’s been a proliferation of articles in all sorts of publications on topics like “How to slow down the rushing horseâ€?, “How to ride the stumble out of your horseâ€?, “How to make your horse go forwardâ€?, and on and on. All these negative and unwanted “behaviorsâ€? from horses may actually be due to something as simple as a poorly-ďŹ tting saddle. Poor saddle ďŹ t impacts your horse’s reex points and causes simple instinctive reactions rather than conscious behaviors. But many articles seem to indicate that these reactions are a result of rider error, and attempt to address corrections by either offering solutions to change rider behavior (or ďŹ tness levels), or more drastically, calling in a vet to administer pharmaceuticals to address the issues. So what are some of the signs that your problems could be due to poor saddle ďŹ t?
