Bio. Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I fell in love with offbeat indie music, conceptual art and avant garde fashion. With aspirations of becoming a Figure Painter, I attended Alberta College of Art and Design soon realizing that this was not my intended path. Being a person of reason, I needed to find a creative outlet that also served my desire for function. I have always loved space, the way it could be transformed and moulded, how it changes, morphing from calm quiet into an bustling atmosphere and how we interact with space itself and people within these spaces. Interior Design was a way for me to be creative and functional. Curating spaces unifying form and function together into a timeless visual indulgence of simple complexity with an emphasis on connecting people and the spaces they inhabit. Our connections extends beyond physical walls to the nature around us, as designers we need to consider all inhabitants of equal importance recognizing our interdependency and designing for all that reside on this planet we call home.

Jenny Jones Rug Competition Submission
Finalist 2017 - Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration Designer Statement: When coming up with my rug design, I was attending a lecture that focused on designer William Morris and one of his famous textiles the “Strawberry Thief” was referenced. The design was inspired by a Thrush, a spotted breast song bird, which had come into Morris’s kitchen window to steal fruit. In that moment I was immediately reminded of Max, my Red Collared Rainbow Lorikeet, native to the Kimberley area in Northern Australia. Max has such beautiful colours and like the Thrush, he is always trying to steal things from me, especially food. As Morris was inspired by nature, I also began by exploring native flora and fauna and since Morris’s work was considered abstract during the 1800’s, I began to research the work of Australian artist Margaret Preston, an abstract printmaker and painter, whose work primarily focused on abstract landscapes and also referenced some of Australia’s contemporary abstract artists’ that have used native flora and fauna as their focus. While considering this information, I was sitting with Max and notice the beautiful way his feathers folded over each other and how each one is unique, some areas having different types of feathers. I then decided to pull more influence from Max by taking close up shots of Max’s feathers and starting collaging cut out images in the same shapes and formations. In these collages a design became to take shape. In the end, I was able to create a design that is versatile, with such a variety of textural elements you are able explore a full range of colour schemes. I wanted the viewer to look at this piece and notice the attention to detail and see it more as a conversation piece of fine art which they are able to interact with becoming a statement of themselves. A contemporary abstract representation of bird feathers that will fill a void connecting space with identity.
