News From The American Le Mans Series - Sebring 2011
The 12 Hours of Sebring kicks off.....
The new dawn
DESTINATIO N SEBRING
SPANNING THE TECH GAP
he technical bridge from the race track to the street can extend thousands of miles or in the case of the new MICHELIN® Pilot® Super Sport tire spectator bridge here at Sebring International Raceway, just 108 feet long. The Sebring bridge is the symbolic link from the pit lane and paddock, where Michelin technical partner teams from BMW, Audi, Porsche, and Peugeot have claimed overall victories at Sebring for the past 12 consecutive years, to the infield and the tens of thousands of fans gathered for the opening race of the 2011 American Le Mans Series
and Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. The technical bridge from track to consumers spans several years, and many thousands of miles of testing, competition and development at the track and in the Michelin research centers. “Our new MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tires were born from endurance racing,” said Silvia Mammone, Michelin motorsports manager. “We place a Michelin engineer with every one of our technical partner teams to help the teams optimize their results, and to help us better understand how our tires perform in the extremes of competition.
“We feed everything we learn into the development of new tires for consumers as well as racers. “The MICHELIN Pilot Super Sports tires (pictured below) are a perfect example of that process.” Michelin researchers, tire designers, engineers and chemists drew upon
Michelin’s experience at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Sebring and other premier endurance events to actually test and develop two of the three innovative technologies that make the new MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport tire the highest performing street tires the company has ever offered.

DID YOU KNOW?
Where’s Johnny O? Longtime Corvette Racing driver, Johnny O’Connell, is moving to the TV booth for the 2011 ALMS season as the color analyst for ABC/ESPN2. There may be something to that. Sebring track historian Ken Breslauer reports that O’Connell is the all-time leading winner at Sebring with eight victories (overall and class wins).
Welcome back champs! David Brabham, Marino Franchitti, Simon Pagenaud and the 2009-2010 ALMS Prototype champion Highcroft Racing team are happy to be here at Sebring. Brabham is the only driver to win races in all four traditional ALMS classes and was a 2009 overall winner at Le Mans with Peugeot. Highcroft has accepted an entry to Le Mans for the new Honda Performance Development (HPD) LMP1.
Great sense of timing Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen turned in an exciting 90 minute drive when his wife Christina went into labor on the way home from a race in Denmark nearly two years ago as son Luca was born. Now, “the Mags” may be in for more excitement as Christina is expecting again, and her due date is June 11, the same day as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Leap Frog Audi and Peugeot seem to have created a high tech version of leap-frog. Audi enters Sebring with a highly revised Audi R15 ++, reflecting the latest updates to its 2010 Le Mans winning R15+. Peugeot, the defending Sebring champions, counter with a new, second generation 908 with a smaller V8 turbo diesel to meet the new rules. Audi has already tested the new enclosed cockpit Audi R18, but Peugeot has just announced it will begin testing a new turbo diesel hybrid later this month. Wow! (see cover photo)
THE ALLEY GOING LIVE
What a Guy! Dyson Racing’s Guy Smith finally achieved the top spot on the podium last year with his victory at Mid-Ohio with codriver Chris Dyson. This victory enabled the former 24 Hours of Le Mans winner to set the record of most American Le Mans Series starts before a win (58 starts). Congratulations Guy! Black Swan or Black Swan? Tim Pappas and Jeroen Bleekemolen and the Black Swan Racing team won the 2010 ALMS GT Challenge class championship, but they aren’t the only winning team with Black Swans. Intercontinental Le Mans Cup Krohn Racing team owner Tracy Krohn, a successful independent oil and natural gas exploration company was an investor in the movie Black Swan for which Natalie Portman claimed the Oscar for best actress at the recent Academy Awards. It is not known if Krohn or Pappas can dance or act.

Twelve Hours of Sebring
ith new cars, rules, manufacturers, teams, drivers and a new international championship, the 59th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring marks both the start of the 2011 American Le Mans Series season and the beginning of an exciting new era in endurance racing worldwide as the race also opens the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup season. New rules designed to drop speeds in the top Prototype class by reducing
engine size and to further separate the performance of the top class from the LMP2 class creates a large and diverse array of entries headed by the defending Sebring champions Peugeot and the 2010 Le Mans winners from Audi. Aston Martin, Honda Performance Development, Toyota, and Mazda also join the LMP1 class fray. The big 57 car field features entries from 14 different major car makers, including LMP2 entries powered by Honda and Nissan.
Meanwhile, the incredible GT class battles continue unabated with Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, Jaguar and Ford now joined by Lamborghini in the attempt to dethrone BMW as ALMS GT champions. The long awaited Panoz Abruzzi will also make its debut here. While the cars, rules, teams and championships may be new, the tradition, unique challenges and legendary fans make Sebring the ideal launching pad. Let’s race.

aunched in 2010 by the Automobile Club l’Ouest (ACO), the organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to create a true world championship for endurance racing sports cars, the ILMC will hold seven events in Europe, the U.S. and China in 2011. The Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta are the two ALMS events included as part of the ILMC championship. Each ILMC event is a minimum of 1000 kilometers or
Six Hours, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans serving as the centerpiece of the championship. With venues like Sebring, SpaFrancorchamps, Imola, Silverstone, Le Mans and Road Atlanta, the ILMC provides a tremendous test of drivers, teams and cars at some of racing’s most challenging circuits. Peugeot earned the first championship in 2010. In addition to Audi and Peugeot, numerous Europeanbased teams have crossed the pond to compete at Sebring.

His 2010 championship rival Gunnar Jeannette is now at Core Autosport headed up by Jonathan Bennett. Meanwhile, Tommy Milner (pictured bottom left) takes a seat at Corvette Racing as Johnny O’Connell moves to the television booth. The TV broadcaster also changes as the ALMS moves from SPEED to ABC and ESPN2. Veteran Bill Adam (pictured center left) joins Johnny O in the ABC booth anchored by Brian Till. After a pair of overall race wins and a LMP2 class win here at Sebring, Greg Pickett’s Muscle Milk team retires its Porsche RS Spyder in favor of a sleek Aston Martin P1 coupe. Robertson Racing changes shoes, joining Michelin as a technical partner team, while Bryce Miller and the Miller Racing Porsche move up from the GT Challenge class to GT. Some things don’t change, like Audi vs. Peugeot; Ferrari vs. Porsche; Sebring in the spring and parties in the Swamp.
Michelin Green X Challenge
Cleaner, faster, more efficient WINNING THE RACE WITHIN THE RACE
here is more than one way to win the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, in fact there are at least two ways to win. Teams can win the 12 Hour Race on the track through their speed, pit work, and clever race strategy, or they can win the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge by being the cleanest, fastest, most efficient cars on the track. Often the race winners are both. “Racing is all about efficiency,” said Scot Elkins, vice president of the International Motor Sports
Association, the sanctioning body for the American Le Mans Series. “Being fast and efficient is not an ‘either/ or’ proposition, teams constantly strive to be both fast and efficient.” Since its ALMS introduction at Sebring at the 2009 running of the 12 Hour race, 16 of the 38 MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge winners have also won their respective class on the race track. The technical freedom provided within the series rules and its acceptance of alternative fuels and innovative technologies has made the ALMS the global leader in green racing and the MICHELIN®
GREEN X® Challenge the top environmental award at every race. In addition to the American Le Mans Series, the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge is now part of the fabric at every Asian and European Le Mans Series event, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup championship. A major new prize will see the 2011 MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge ALMS Prototype and GT season champions earn automatic invitations for entry to the 2012 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “A guaranteed invitation to entry at
Le Mans is a big prize and one that will keep the competition top of mind all season long for manufacturers, teams and fans alike,” said Elkins, a member of the Green Racing steering team that oversees the awards. The steering team also includes representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International. All five fuels and energies in the U.S. national energy policy (E10; E85R; isobutanol; GTL-diesel and electric hybrid) are approved for and have been used in American Le Mans Series competition.
