Winter 2013

Tricky Tray Brunch The Rebuild Tricky Tray Brunch was a huge success! It was a real labor of love for the Tricky Tray committee: Natalie Lopez, Andrea Doak, Alice Lenna and Liz Steele. But we couldn’t have done it without the help of so many wonderful volunteers; Roxanne Perrone, Ursula McDermott, Jenny Ruszkowski, Kathy Medici, Marcus Alexander, Rebecca Doak, Hannah Doak, Maddlyn Elia, Michael Anniccharico, Nicole Anniccharico, Judy Stone, Evelyn Doorley, John Lenna, Andy Schwartz, Denise Purdy, Louise Cody. Thank you to Barbara Ortiz for her beautiful table decorations, Vinny Ferrante and Goddess Santiago for transporting all the prizes to the venue, our MC’s Alice Lenna, Steve Hirsch and Tom Steele and Michelle Rusnock for selling 50/50 tickets and saving the day by getting those extra tables we needed at the last minute. Continued on next page….

Did you know that Fesco Fence donated a doghouse as a prize which was amazing! Thank you Fesco! What’s even more amazing is that Michelle Torello, who won the dog house, donated it right back to the shelter. And the person who won the 50/50 donated $400.00 right back to us. The generosity was just overwhelming!

We would also like thank the event sponsors: Tilcon, Country Lee Farm, Mercedes Benz of Nanuet, Tallman OBGYN, PC, Wortendyke Brothers and Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru and the hundreds of Rockland businesses and residents that donated gift baskets and gift cards and all the people who attended the event to support Rebuild and Hi Tor. We raised $11,500 that will be split between Rebuild Hi Tor and Hi Tor Animal Care Center medical fund.

Peggy was exactly right when she said during the News 12 interview the day of the race “Let’s get them adopted!” and “Remember Adopt! Don’t Shop!”

Re-Build Hi-Tor Animal Care Center Calendar 2014 For the 4th year, Dushi Aruba, Mr. August, is the Calendar Pet of the Year 2014. When he was rescued from the streets of Aruba, he was not a cute, cuddly puppy but a malnourished, mangy, flea & tick ridden 'teenage' dog struggling to survive. Dushi was one 'lucky dog' when he attracted the attention of Heather & Christine Vokes while they were vacationing on the island. He quickly won Heather's heart and she arranged necessary medical care and nutrition until he was declared well. Since Heather's birthday was approaching, Dushi Aruba's transport to NY and assurance of a permanent home were her gift from her parents Richie & Sue. Having recently lost their beloved Renegade to kidney disease, Dushi helped mend their hearts. A few years later, while on a walk with Richie, Dushi became determined to hurry home which was most unusual. Dushi is credited with saving Richie's life by reacting to signs of his cardiac emergency. At the age of 9, Dushi is well-loved and indulged by the Vokes Family. As his name translates Dushi is truly a “Sweetheart. We are greatly appreciative of the enthusiasm and efforts of the Vokes family and all of our contestants, like the other winners, Benji, Springy, Basket of kittens, Magic, Diddle, Ranger, Zoey, Oliver, Bentley, Charlotte, Pumpkin, Romeo, Taco&Belle, and their participation in this and many other fund raising activities that benefit the well-being of sheltered animals. Dushi contributes as a Calendar Star and running with Heather in the Hi-Tor races.

Originally constructed over 40 years ago, the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center is obsolete and inadequate to care for the nearly 2500 animals that require shelter each year. Dogs, cats, bunnies and other domestic animals enter the shelter for many reasons: they have become lost or stray, they are surrendered due to family hardships- health, finances, housing issues; they are victims of abuse or neglect or they are the result of unregulated over-breeding. The shelter provides a safe haven for the animals until they are reclaimed by their owners or, like Dushi fortunate to find new and forever loving homes. The Committee to Rebuild Hi-Tor, organized and chaired by Donald Franchino, has created a capital campaign to identify a suitable location for a new facility and to raise funds and donations for the construction of a modern shelter to provide proper care and comfort for these animals. The Calendar Contest is but one of many efforts of the Rebuild Hi-Tor Committee to raise funds and to increase public awareness of the animal welfare issues in Rockland. The Rebuild Hi-Tor Calendar Contest 2014 is a tribute to the many loved pets that have happy homes. All proceeds benefit the goal of a new facility for the many homeless animals of Rockland until they find their own special homes. Aaron and Susanne Pepis of The Pepis Studio donated their talents and time photographing the contestants and designing the calendar and which are available at Hi-Tor, New City Bowl, Camp BowWow, Ramapo Kennels and weekends at PetSmart for $20 donation or may be ordered at : Rebuild Hi-Tor- Calendars, PO Box 306, New City, NY 10956. Additional information at:,, by Judy Stone A huge thank you to Judy Stone who worked tirelessly on the project. Well done Judy!

JESSICA is a 10 year-old Beagle who has NEVER lived in a home. She spent 10 years of her life living in a garage and was surrendered to the shelter because her owners were moving. Having spent her entire life without much social interaction Jessica is in need of a little training and a whole lotta love! She likes the company of other dogs and would be happiest in a home with compassionate adults with older children. Please come and meet this senior baby and give her the life she never had. Don't you want to see her live out her final years INSIDE a house where she can receive the attention and affection she deserves? We sure do! For more info or to meet Jessica please call the shelter at (845) 354-7900.

Cazzie has been at Hi Tor for one year which makes her our longest feline resident at the shelter! She's only one year old so all she has ever known is life at the shelter. We would like to see that change today! Cazzie is loved by our volunteers and is sweet and playful. She is already spayed and vaccinated. All she needs now is a good home for the next 16-20 years! Trust us, she is worth it! For more info or to meet Cazzie please call the shelter at (845) 3547900.
