CELEBRATING Your Amazing Life! As I write this, I am reflecting on the past six months. What a joy and pleasure it has been to bring you this publication each month – to share your stories, your photos, and celebrate your amazing lives. These last six months have been extraordinary in many ways and I must admit on the surface not always in a good way. In the last few months, we all have experienced unprecedented challenges on every level and in every area of our lives. My heart goes out to those in the community who have lost loved ones, income, or security of wellbeing in any way. We will get through this and we will become stronger as a community. Amid the hardships and challenges, there is always the opportunity to grow and change for the better, to be a part of a greater solution. Our circumstances are not always perfect, but our choices and actions can change things in amazing ways. This is the spirit reflected in the Community of Key Biscayne, and this is what we celebrate with this issue. My hope, as always with each issue, is that it brings a bit of joy into your life, especially during these trying times. With last month’s issue, KB Living has been in print for six months! Time has passed so quickly. We have truly enjoyed publishing the magazine and meeting so many people in the community! Thank you to the many KB families and individuals who have contributed their stories over the past few months. We want to continue to improve with each issue. To do that, we invite your input, involvement, and feedback. This is your community magazine. If you enjoy receiving KB Living and have thought you might like to share your story or know a neighbor, you think we should feature, I’d love to meet them ... even on a Zoom call! We are all about celebrating and sharing the best things in life. You can share anything with me for consideration to include in an upcoming issue. If you’d like to be a Meet your Neighbor feature, share your kids’ accomplishments, share the story of a non-profit that’s important to you or that you volunteer with, share a recipe, show off your cute pet, mark a milestone birthday, we’re here to help you do that!

They live among us, and they will inspire us all to keep the faith. We would also love to showcase your graduates! Whether it’s kindergarten, 8th grade, high school, or college, we understand you missed out on your moment and we would love to recognize you in our future issues! Please email your photo and a brief summary for us to share! We are grateful for all our partners and sponsors who make this publication possible. We know this has been a trying time, especially for them during this pandemic. As a community, please support these businesses. Jeff Raymond

Mr. Raymond’s Civics And Social Studies Academy

May is the month we typically celebrate our school teachers with Teachers’ Appreciation Week. This year is a little different with in-class school being canceled. So, we would like to say “Thank You!” to all our teachers for the amazing work you do, especially this year, with unprecedented challenges. You are our Classroom Heros!

We are delighted to feature Jeff Raymond, Civics and History Teacher at the MAST Academy. Jeff has been a teacher for Miami Public schools since 2004. He taught at Key Biscayne K-8 Center for ten years and moved over to the MAST Academy three years ago. He is known as Mr. Raymond to many local students and their families here on the island, but he is also known to tens of thousands of grateful students all over the country via the internet. Mr. Raymond’s Civics and Social Studies Academy YouTube channel has over 17,000 subscribers and most of his tutorial videos have thousands of views. Many have tens of thousands of views. That’s a lot of Civics and History lessons! Those of us who are parents learning to teach our own children in this new #StayHomeStaySafe world are in awe!

Jeff grew up in Connecticut near New York City. He attended Roanoke College in Virginia and lived in Boston following college. After ten years of doing sales and marketing in the music industry, he started looking for a career change, something where he could impact other’s lives. His advisor in college, Professor Miller, instilled in him a love of history, which impacted his decision to become a teacher. It was the pursuit of this new career that brought him to Key Biscayne. Jeff’s parents had retired here and he came down to take some teaching courses for what he thought would be a short six-month stay. “Seventeen years later, and I am still here,” he says with a grateful smile. Jeff moved to Key Biscayne in 2003 but has been coming here since the mid-1990s. He loves the small-town feel with easy access to the city. While teaching is obviously his biggest passion in life, in his free time, he likes to play golf and travel. Jeff tells us, “This is a close-knit community where people tend to know each other and connect well. As a family, we enjoy the community. My parents and brother live here. As a realtor, my

brother will often show a residence to a family. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that we are brothers. We definitely have the same voice. And although we don’t see it, people think we look alike.” When we asked Jeff about his life as a teacher he shared, “As a teacher, every day is an adventure. You never know what the day has in store for you. One of the unique gifts of my career is the opportunity to teach kids from Key Biscayne in middle school and high school. Watching them grow up and go to college is amazing. I regularly run into them and their parents on the island, which makes the bond that much more special.” “Teaching requires a lot of patience, passion, and a love of learning. It is a physically and emotionally draining profession, but I feed off the energy of my students. I am constantly looking for ways to improve as an educator. My students keep me motivated.” In wrapping up our interview, we asked Jeff to share some advice for anyone pursuing a career in teaching or for parents who woke up one day in early March to find that this was their new job. He said, “For a long time in America, we have talked about how little teachers are paid. Although I took a large pay cut to become a teacher, I can’t put a price on the fulfillment it has brought to my life.” Thank you, Mr. Raymond! You and all the Key Biscayne teachers are truly our Classroom Heros! Would you like to meet more people in the community or do you know someone we should get to know? sponsor spotlight This month we had the privilege of visiting with Spencer Raymond and enjoyed getting to know him better. We asked Spencer to share a little of his personal background and he came to be where he is today. Here is our interview with him. Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family. I grew up in a small town in Connecticut called Southport. After college, I lived in San Francisco for many years and briefly in Key Biscayne prior to relocating to work in the Hamptons. For five years, I was with a television Network in Manhattan. My brother teaches locally at MAST Academy and my folks split their time between the Key and Cape Cod, MA. Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I studied Jazz Composition and received my Bachelor’s Degree, I moved to the Bay Area. With a strong technical background, I consulted with many start-ups besides sales and marketing positions in San Francisco and Silicon Valley while simultaneously pursuing a career in music. While living in California I was recruited to work in television with a boutique network catering to resort towns in The Hamptons, Vail, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Telluride, Aspen, Sun Valley, and Miami Beach.   What is unique about your business? What sets you apart?  We are a full-service Residential and Commercial Real Estate Team dedicated to helping Homeowners sell properties, finding properties for Buyers and those seeking advice about Investment opportunities.  Contact us directly or via the Website.  We look forward to working with you.    How long have you lived in Key Biscayne? What caused you to move here?  While my family relocated to the Key over 20 years ago, I initially moved from Manhattan to Brickell and shortly after to Key Biscayne where I have been living for the past 11 years.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents? Working in Real Estate, I have come to know the Island very well. Take advantage of our beautiful beaches and parks. I love riding my bike around Bill Baggs State Park. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area of the Country. Get out there and explore. There are many hidden gems here on the Key. Anything else you would like to share with our readers? Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in a property consultation, or would like to know the value of your home or condo. We love to help people and if there is anything you need, whether it’s business-related or personal, we are here to help.   I have been a Board Member at the Chamber of Commerce for many years and we strive to make a difference and give back to our community. HOPEMASK PROJECT When Art, Social, And Human Services Join Forces, Hope Is The Outcome. #HOPEMASKS is an initiative started by a local artist to create more than just a face covering. Laura Villarreal, local artist and art instructor at the Community Center moved her studio home to continue to work and create as she joined the rest of the Island in the massive efforts to battle the novel coronavirus and “flatten the curve” of the insidious COVID-19 disease. As she listened to the news and spoke with others around her, she sensed the feeling of fear and despondency. She knew that staying home was the right thing to do, but it didn’t feel right to stay home and do nothing to help. She had an idea – maybe she could help those who could not stay home, those who were providing essential services. She also hoped to help those who had to stay home with no income. As an artist, one of her primary mediums is fiber, working with fabric. She knew she could sew masks, but her vision was to do more. Using her art, she wanted to inspire hope. That is when the #HOPEMASKS Project was born. She quickly realized this vision was bigger than her, and she needed help. She reached out to Tatyana and Christine at the Chamber of Commerce …

Laura Villarreal – Key Biscayne Artist and Creator of the #HopeMasks initiative

When Tatyana and Cristine heard Laura’s idea, they knew exactly who to connect her with, Rebeca Calvet, Founder of Club eXpats. Laura shared her idea and explained that she needed seamstresses to help sew the masks. Rebeca knew they would also need additional volunteers to help complete the project. She reached out to several contacts and friends through Club eXpats. One of those contacts was Cristina Kunkel, a volunteer at La Casita Foundation where they “work with women in vulnerable situations providing them with the necessary tools and skills to live with dignity.” Cristina

brought women from La Casita to sew the masks. Other women from Club eXpats ran errands, gathered materials, cut the fabric, and delivered the masks… #HOPEMASKS is no longer just an idea or

Guadalupe Reyna, Local Artist helping make the masks

a project, it is a reality. Together these women created hundreds of beautiful masks you now see everywhere around the island. Each one unique and displaying the message of hope.

Margarita Mordones who coordinated the work with the women from La Casita

Art, Social and Human Services came together, made masks to protect against a disease, provided income for the financially distressed, and continue to inspire hope every day in the community. 28 KB Living • May 2020

We asked Ana Cristina to share her thoughts and insights on the current global health and economic challenges. How has the current global health crisis affected you and your business?

I tend to thrive during challenging times. I make an inner decision of being part of the solution and use all the tools and resources towards my new goals. I become more mindful of things that nourish my body, mind, and soul. I ask myself daily: How am I responding to life? How is life responding to me? What is working? Why is it working? How can I evolve and make it work even better? How can I help my clients, family, and friends not only connect with what I have learned but with the bigger picture for their lives? Individually and as a community, the best thing we can do is work on prevention. Be proactive, acting on life instead of reacting to it. What are you doing to meet the new challenges? And what do you recommend to the people of Key Biscayne?

Throughout my life, I’ve had my share of challenging moments. Because of that, I’ve developed an ability to reinvent myself whenever needed, keeping on exploring and learning what the next levels and opportunities are for me. There is always a next level, but we need to be open to the changes that are inevitable and necessary. I recommend following these seven steps. Start with a belief – to an intention – to action – to the manifestation in my reality.  1. Connect with your vision 2. Decide to act on it 3. Align with the vision: feelings, emotions,

decisions, discipline, etc. 4. Allow yourself to connect with a higher intelligence from nature, from your subconsciousness. The Universe is full of knowledge for us to benefit from. 5. Develop a plan in line with your vision, resources, and tools. 6. Attraction – in your uniqueness and authenticity lies your magnetism. This brings opportunities. 7. Action, Action, Action – no matter what, keep on moving. Life is movement and action.

What is one piece of practical advice that you share with businesses and individuals facing tough challenges right now?

The secret is connecting with something larger than you. Things don’t happen to us, they happened for us. Align with your best vision for our world. Become part of the solution. Direct your energy where you want it to be. Be mindful of your thoughts. Take intentional actions.

NOURISHING TEAS FOR THE

Body, Mind, & Soul

36 KB Living • May 2020

health and wellness By AnaChristina De Sa, Resident Contributor

For thousands of years, cultures all over the world have celebrated the art of tea making and the ceremony of drinking tea. It is a part of sharing community, promoting healing, and a refreshment not only to the body but the soul. I encourage you to include tea in your daily routine not just as a refreshing beverage but also as a moment to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate. Teas are filled with health benefits, providing antioxidants and nutrients. Various types of tea can provide calmness, as well as energy, bringing sharpness and acuity to the mind. For centuries, tea has been a part of meditative practices to bring tranquility and refreshment to the soul. Because this has become such a meaningful part of my life, with so many benefits,  I have partnered with tea sommelier, Robin Durfee, of Robin’s House of Teas to create a beautiful, hand-crafted selection of organic intentional tea blends that support and align with the ideals and lifestyle we promote through BioSacred. We have created a beautiful, healthy way to nourish our bodies, souls, and minds. I am excited to debut these special blends here in Key Biscayne Living. You are the first to know about them.   BioSacred Bright Herbal Blend is a bright and brisk blend of lemongrass, sage, orange blossoms, and ginger. It calls forth and supports the BioSacred principles of creating a life lived with intention, clarity, purpose, action, prosperity, authenticity, and love. BioSacred Calming Botanicals Blend is a nurturing and soothing blend of lavender, rose petals, mint, lemon balm, and chamomile. It aligns with our principles of harmonizing and creating sacred spaces to maximize the potential of our living spaces. Spaces where we recharge our energies, generate peace, nurture ourselves, and invite wellness. BioSacred Immunity and Vitality Blend is a bold and fortifying blend of Holy Basil, echinacea, ashwagandha, elderberries, rose hips, and ginger. Stress, worry, and lack of proper sleep rob us of our vitality. This blend supports and strengthens the body’s natural BioSacred healing abilities so you stay vital, dynamic, and moving toward your best BioSacred Life. Whether you use these blends or find your own favorite teas, I hope that you incorporate the practice of drinking tea into your daily lifestyle and enjoy all the many benefits.  You can find out more about the BioSacred teas through my website at www.https://biosacred.com or email me@ biosacred.com. You can explore the wonderful world and culture of international teas with Robin Durfee, South Florida’s first certified Tea Sommelier at robinshouseoftea.com. May 2020 • KB Living

BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe (2020) A WORLD CLASS GRAND TOURER

Just say the name “Gran Coupe” and it automatically conveys an image of something sexy and luxurious yet functional and practical. The all-new BMW M850i is all that and more! The curvaceous silhouette, wide kidney grille and long, sleek hood make the M850i look elegant and sporty from every angle. There are many purposeful and smart design ideas that come together in the making of this gran coupe and fortunately, the freakishly large kidney grille is not one of them. Thank you, BMW!   The side profile is modern and simple, with a design element in the form of a modern raked chevron which is functional for ventilation in both front fenders. The doors feature frameless glass, which create a nice hint of style every time a door is opened. At the back of the rear doors is the famous “Hofmeister Kink” which is featured in almost every BMW car since 1961 and is an import-

40 KB Living • May 2020

ant homage to BMW’s past head of design from 1955-1970, Herr Wilhelm Hofmeister. This kink is a signature element for BMW, featuring two angled kinks on the rearmost part of the widow and C pillar. In the case of the M850i Gran Coupe, this important feature is modernized and refreshed by being more subtle and stylized. The trunk, taillights, and rear bumper show off a more modern look than the 6 Series Gran Coupe which this car replaces. On the lower part of the bumper, there are two large exhaust openings that create a statement of power and elegance thanks to their design and size. The interior is modern and efficient, featuring many of the same design cues from other, current BMWs. One nice item is the lighted door sill with the elegant font of the M850i and BMW M colors. Seats are noticeably more comfortable than the ones on the now-discontinued 6 Series. We love the jewel-like gear se-

lector and the soft-touch buttons on the center console area. The latest version of the iDrive system has evolved, offering more inviting graphics and additional features. There is wireless phone charging in the center console as well as plenty of storage space around the cabin. The rear seats are separated by a large center console with USB ports and climate control functions. I am a bit under 6 feet and found these seats to be comfortable and not difficult to get in and out of. We really like the use of bright LED courtesy lights in the trunk and door handle inserts; This is a nice touch that conveys a feeling of luxury in and around the car. Driving the M850i is a delight. From the baritone-like engine sound at start-up to the perfectly dampened suspension, this Gran Coupe feels at home regardless of what you throw at it. Miami traffic can be quite unpredictable and at times even miserable. The incredibly refined manners when you need to go at crawl speeds or in stop-and-go traffic are noticeable and welcomed. Both the brake and throttle are engineered to have the right amount of feedback, thus minute applications of either brake or throttle reward the driver with excellent smoothness. In fact, some of the family members that ride with me can be quite demanding and picky, yet they managed to fall asleep while on the commute and I still drove normally. Bravo BMW!   Acceleration is fast and powerful, with a nice throaty V8 sound emanating directly from the engine and through the speakers. Yes, it’s synthetic. Steering feedback is good, but at times it can be a bit numb, especially when driving in a straight line and doing small corrections. Brakes are linear and very precise, offering excellent control and little if any fade after repeated stops. We did notice that the electronic nannies are a bit too intrusive at times. Regardless, for me, the M850i has been a huge surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed the look, feel, and experience driving this capable grand tourer and I am sure if you drive one, you will, too.   Competitors include: Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera & Audi S7.   The BMW M850i is truly a Gran Coupe yet not over the top, or in your face about it. There is a nice blend of elegance, style, luxury, and sportiness every time you drive it.   THE ESSENTIALS: MSRP: $108,900.00 MSRP (As Tested): $121,695.00 Fuel Economy: (Observed): 18 MPG Engine: V8, 4.4-liter twin-turbo, 523 HP & 553 Lb./Ft. of torque Popular Options Include: - Drivers Assist $1,100 - Assistance Pro Package: $1,700 - Bowers & Wilkins sound system: $3,400 - M Carbon Exterior Package: $4,100 Please visit: www.bmwusa.com Photos courtesy of BMW USA   Follow the Author, Juan G Robbin Web: www.motoringstyle.com • Instagram: motoringstyle May 2020 • KB Living

Verrine

Avocado & Smoked Salmon Appetizer VERRINE Not to be confused with terrine, a verrine (“ver-een”) is an appetizer or dessert made of components layered in a small glass. The word which translates to “protective glass” in French, refers to a trend that began in France a decade ago that has spread to the United States and other corners of the culinary world. INGREDIENTS: 1 ripe avocado 2 slices of smoked salmon 100 g. Philadelphia cream cheese half a lemon 50 g. of cheese le boursin with herbs and garlic chives 1 jar of trout eggs PREPARATION: 15 MIN • Mash the avocado pulp in a bowl. • Season lightly with salt, pepper, and lemon. • Place 1/4 of the preparation in each verrine. • Mix the cream cheese and the cheese le boursin with herbs and garlic in a bowl with 1 teaspoon water to thin. • Layer on top of avocado in verrines. • Cut the smoked salmon slices into small pieces, distribute on top of the verrines. • When ready to serve, garnish with a few trout eggs, chives, a fillet of lemon and sprinkle with a five-berry pepper. ABOUT THE COOK: Virginie Paran, French native with a double nationality (French and now American). She lived most of her life in the South of France (Aix en Provence) but now lives in Key Biscayne. Her love to cook comes from her mom and grandmother, who taught her everything she knows. She now wants to share this culture with future generations. ask the expert

DLT INTERIORS Debbie Travin, founder of New York-based home remodeling and interior design firm, DLT Interiors. Debbie grew up in the world of haute couture accompanying her family on business trips to Italy to purchase men’s luxury fashion. She always had an innate sense of style and a keen eye for color. Her early career in the fashion industry led to the discovery of her passion for design and eye for detail in interior design. From then on, her keen sense of style began to grow and turned into a successful career. We asked her to share some of her favorite design projects and a few of her decorating ideas. KB Living: What is one big idea that you can share with our readers? Debbie: Don’t be afraid to blend your style – for instance, my personal style has always been classic with a modern/trendy twist. I design my interiors in the same way. I design for longevity by creating timeless interiors with a modern twist/edge. KB Living: Where do you get your design inspiration? Debbie: I’m inspired by all well-known interior designers because each person has their own unique style, which I can appreciate and pick up interesting ideas from. My favorite fashion designer by far is Giorgio Armani. He optimizes true luxury and elegance. I love Monet. His brilliant use of color is extraordinary. His paintings are extremely serene and soothing to look at. KB Living: What are three home accessories that will be fabulous gifts or will brighten up your home? Debbie: As you can see from the pictures of my favorite projects shared here, I incorporate these 3 things: • Beautiful fashion/home design cocktail books. • A special, unique tray can be used anywhere – cocktail table, buffet, consoles, or vanities. • A magnificent vase makes a beautiful centerpiece anywhere — fresh flowers of your choice always enhance a room! “What COMMUNITY Means To Me” Community: (noun) a social group of any size whose members

reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. Merriam-Webster Dictionary Community by literal definition is a noun, and it certainly describes the Village of Key Biscayne. But in a very real and practical way here in Key Biscayne, you can say community is a verb, an action word. The community of Key Biscayne is full of action, it has hands and feet and a huge heart with a beautiful smile.

“I live and work in this wonderful community we call our ‘Island Paradise.’ To me, the people are what make this community so special. The relationships that I have built are what motivate me to work hard, perform my best, and enjoy all the beauty this Island has to offer.” Vivian Galego-Mendez, VP-Managing Broker Key Biscayne Office – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM RealEstate

“Community is a wonderful way to learn new things, meet new people, and to express ourselves creatively.” Juan G. Robbin, Automotive Writer MotoringStyle.com

We asked some of the residents of Key Biscayne to share in one to two sentences, “What community means to me.” Here are some of the responses we received (These are just a few of the responses, we will be sharing more next month. If you would like to share “What community means to you,” please email us at KBLiving@n2pub.com). “Community means connection. Beyond meeting at the rec to do an exercise class, for example, community means coming together for the greater good. When we all pull our efforts together – like we did during the pandemic, for instance – everybody wins. Community means that we can put our differences and inclinations aside so that more people benefit as a result of our concerted effort.”

“Community means a sense of belonging to me and how, as you give of yourself, you “get” back in [the] self-satisfaction of trying your best for the good of all.” Ceci Sanchez, Fortune International Realty

“I would suggest that community is about recognizing and learning about the needs of one another and coming together to achieve whatever goals are for the betterment of all the community, and giving back wherever we can. This could range from government, and the appropriate structure and support needed, to volunteerism, and the coming together of families through recreation opportunities and leisure!” Joe Coote, Front House Manager, Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Ana Tootle, Founder of Feel Good Foods and Thoughts

“A true sense of community involves seeing the value in one another — along with our individual and shared experiences. It’s where diplomacy, tact, and accentuating the positive keeps us living in harmony.” Tatyana Chiocchetti, Executive Director

“Community is about recognizing and accepting everyone’s culture, regardless of their background. This has been so evident recently, through the COVID-19 crisis, and seeing young children, as well as adults, willing to assist their neighbors with delivering groceries and food orders! www.zoomerstoboomers.com.” Jenn Coote, Property Manager of Island House Apartments

“We do not exist in isolation. We are part of a whole that needs to be acknowledged, appreciated, and respected. I believe Key Biscayne and it’s residents reflect that beautifully. Key Biscayne is a small selected community with a big heart and grand vision.”

“For me, “community” is not a place, I see it as the people you contact frequently, and with whom you share your life or working space every day.” Aquilino Navarro, FreeBee Rides

Ana Cristina De Sa, Founder Biosacred

“Community to me means sharing, being respectful to neighbors, supporting those in need, being kind, and smiling. Key Biscayne is my community! ... for 40 years.” Michele Estevez, President of CAM / Michele & Associates

“Community is giving individually to enhance the lives of others around you and, in turn, your own life is enhanced.” Laura Villarreal, Artist, and initiator of #HOPEMASKS

“Community is connecting art, social, and human services to meet a common challenge and finding solutions to benefit everyone.” Rebeca Calvet, Founder and President of Club eXpats.

The reality is, we all age. Yep — no matter how many facelifts, nips, and tucks we do to prevent it on a physical level, there comes a time when we hit a certain age and just deserve that carefree life. You know, the type that is as luxe as it gets. Redefining the all-inclusive experience for our beloved seniors, we introduce you to an independent living and assisted living facility with a multitude of properties in Dade and Broward Counties. From the heart of Coral Gables to Kendall, and Homestead, too, their eighth community is completing soon in Weston. From delicious food to cocktails to personal trainers to activities from the day to night, 40 years in the making — The Palace at Coral Gables has succeeded in becoming the number one senior living community — and was even awarded by the National Association of Homebuilders for being the best in its class! Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, The Palace Group was founded by Helen and Jacob Shaham, who immigrated from Israel. Believe it or not, they had originally started with five employees and 21 beds in Opa Locka and grew their business to what it is today, hosting 1,200-plus residents with 1,400 employees! “We consider what we built to be comparable to a five-star hotel-style experience, simply for senior living. Because we are local, living in the Gables, we surely are very hands-on. We grew our operation the way we did because we got our hands dirty and were heavily involved, and, currently, we live in the Gables, so we are close!” Once you visit The Palace, you know it is the kind of establishment where your loved ones belong, and it should come as no surprise that 70 percent of the residents who move in are referred via word of mouth from residents and their families! A result of what “we do to keep the residents engaged. The families come for holidays. For example, normally, we do big gatherings for Easter and Passover, and we offer community events for

62 KB Living • May 2020

the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, too.” Have no fear because you never will lose touch with mom, dad, auntie, uncle or grandma/grandpa — it is actually the opposite, as “the families really grow here — we have done focus groups and what we have found is that when they come to us the dynamic and family unit has changed. That and a lot of other things have led to people moving here due to happy families.” Furthermore, “We monitor satisfaction. We want to make every effort to never rest on our laurels and to go above and beyond.” If you are wondering what the age range, interests, and demographic of people who live at The Palace are, well, let us break it down for you. The average age is early- to mid-80s, and the residents are

primarily widows. Encouraging social and healthy behaviors, it is a wonderful experience for those who live on campus and certainly a new chapter for these individuals who “move to our community to be around other people and to have social stimulation, plus meals and amenities at their fingertips. They come to us because we offer endless activities and simply want to be well taken care of, and it provides peace of mind for the families, too. Communication is one key to success, letting the families know what is going on in their loved one’s lives.” Also, through the University

of Miami, “We have adult education classes, and we like to say it’s a cruise ship that never leaves port. For physical and mental wellness, we offer exercise classes, adult education, happy hour with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and live entertainment. There is always something going on for them to take advantage of, to stimulate the mind and body. Personal trainers are offered at no extra charge, as well!” With the current state of affairs and with a global pandemic, they wanted you to know that “our priority is maintaining the safety and security

of our residents and security. With the CDC and the state, we have taken their suggestions and gone over and above.” Currently, considering the safety of residents, “nobody is able to enter – all non-essential employees are not coming in. Everyone who does come in must do a daily survey and temperatures taken, the residents, too. And their blood oxygen levels are monitored. We have discontinued communal dining and activities. We are making every effort to make sure they are safe. Skype, FaceTiming, so they can communicate with their loved ones.” And, “the families are

incredibly appreciative of all the measures we are taking.” The Palace at Coral Gables facility (closest to you, Cocoplum) boasts 243 beautiful apartments in the heart of all the action, and the mom-andpop feel paired with carefree living plus local ownership who you have direct access with, too — they are enough of a reason to consider this option for your loved ones. The costs for the all-inclusive luxury experience begin at $5,250. For more information, please visit https://www.palacecoralgables.com or call 305-445-7444. May 2020 • KB Living
