BAN SAN SI Design Studio VI - Spring 2019 Brian McGrath

Fully immersed in Chiang Mai, a city located in the rural region of Northern Thailand, we conducted field research alongside Thai students, as part of a workshop. Primarily we started to analyze existing vernacular phenomenonism relation to urban exapansion, focusing on, but no limited to architecture, urban planning, and crypto-colonization. All things that we studied were generally things on the outside, and not on the inside. From there, we analyzed and moved further into a village. We dove into studying temple and residential compounds, and also interviewed locals, on their experience. These experiences helped me understand the urban center and the outlying countryside. These discoveries and ideas were then brrought back to New York, where we finished the semester designing for our individual villages.

STREET SEATS

Design Build: Street Seats - Spring 2019 Eric Feuster This class specialized on the entire design build process. Through careful collaboration and beautiful design decisions, each student, many for us a first time, was able to see through an entire project to its finality Street Seats taught me how to collaborate with not only other architects and designers from different levels, but also an entire team of people with different skill sets and talents, specifically, mrketting and press. This studio acted almost like a real firm, because of all our separate skills coming together as a class.

ARCHOLOGY (2750 AD) Design Studio 5 - Fall 2019 Carlo Enzo Frugiuele

My last studio at Parsons was based on the principle of separation and unification of land. It also dealt heavily with our relationship with water by taking case studies from other cities like Amsterdam and floating/ fishing villages in Asia. The studio provides an opportunity to work at a scale that is greater than a single building and yet small enough that finer grained investigations of form and material assemblage can be incorporated. The challenge is to innovate as a process rather than as a product and challenge students to think about how we will build our buildings and cities in the coming decades. What should buildings of the 21st century look like, how should they perform, what are its responsibilities to the city, as a model for new ways of living? The evolution of the design during the early stages will entail an ongoing exchange between programmatic and spatial opportunities until they are optimally joined.
