Morality: Staying Pure in an Impure World And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name

Morality: Staying Pure in an Impure World . “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Morality: Staying Pure in an Impure World . “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

The Source of Morality Misunderstandings About Morality Colorful Morality The Power to Live a Moral Life

The Source of Morality: God And God spoke all these words . . . (Exodus 20:1, NIV) Morality is not man made. Morality is God made. The source of morality is eternal, omnipotent, omniscient God, therefore . . .

MORALS ARE ABSOLUTE!

A Definition of Morality Morals are standards of behavior.

Morality is right and wrong behavior. God has given us some absolute, unwavering, unchanging standards of behavior to govern our lives and societies . . . This is why they are etched in stone!

Misunderstandings About Morality We see God’s moral standards as a code to be followed and not a lifestyle to be lived. This results in . . . Do’s and don’ts, rules and regulations rather than a passionate desire to be like Jesus

External Righteousness Without Purity of Heart External righteousness focuses on –

**Living by a code **Do’s and don’ts **Rules and regulations YOU CAN DO ALL THESE THINGS AND NEVER ENJOY THE BLESSINGS OF A MORAL LIFESTYLE!!!!!!!!!

Saul – The Classic Example Of External Righteousness though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord (Philip. 3:4-8, NIV)

Jesus – Morality Begins In The Heart “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matt. 5: 21-22, 27, NIV)

MORALITY IS NOT WHAT YOU DO, IT’S WHO YOU ARE!!!

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors . . . I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. (Jeremiah 31: 31-32, 33, NIV) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts . . .not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:3,6, NIV)

Colorful Morality **Not a code . . . A lifestyle. **Not focused on the external . . . Fueled by the Internal **Not haughty and arrogant . . . Attractive and colorful Not black and white, etched in stone . . . Filled with life, found in Jesus Christ!!!

The Power to Live a Moral Life And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:1, NIV) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20, NIV)

The call of Jesus will always be “Follow me.”
