water’s edge by creating a “green belt” of jogging paths and bike lanes.
My thesis is to redefine the monotonous definition New York City has
given to the waterfront in the past
50 years. I want to create an edge
condition that brings the excitement back to the water while creating a place not just to get away, but to stay away.
Shedding the “green belt” edge standard and creating a sustainable, productive, public foil that re-energizes the water’s edge and, in turn, the upland it connects to. The site I will materialize this vision is St George, Staten Island. Specifically 15 acres directly next to the Ferry Terminal and straddling the St. George Ballpark. The area has an urban density, facilitating a unique blend of domestic commuter and tourist
sightseer, while owning a history neither is aware of.
From the horn of the ferry to the passing cargo and cruise ships, St. George is the only active place left to imagine the storied, yet obscured, history of New York and its Harbor. As Staten Island yearns for a destination that is not across a body of water, St. George is a habitat ready to expand, and has mass transit access that can rival Midtown Manhattan. This is a project, in which the water’s edge will once again act as an economic generator, spurring St. George into development, and placing the “Forgotten Borough” on the map.
