LORD GALLERY PRESENTS NORMAN ZAMMITT: PURE LIGHT AND SPACE STARTING JANUARY 5, 2011 (December 1, 2010)—Palm Springs, CA—Michael H. Lord Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Norman Zammitt: Pure Light and Space, opening on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 with a public reception from 6-8 p.m. Los Angeles-based Joni Gordon, of the prestigious NEWSPACE, is guest curator of the exhibition featuring the late artist’s historic paintings. “Pure Light and Space is an apt description of Zammitt’s 1970’s iconic Los Angeles paintings,” Gordon describes. “Often mural size, Zammitt’s paintings are luxurious, radiant experiences drenched in fused colors. He presents objectivity and distills silence.” Zammitt was a part of the Light and Space Movement that was formulated in Los Angeles during the 1960s by a group of gifted artists that included Robert Irwin, John McCracken, Larry Bell, Craig Kaufman, Maria Nordman, Helen Pashgian, James Turrell, and DeWain Valentine. Their collective achievements in art are found in major museums worldwide. Zammitt’s work is included in collections at LACMA, Museum of Modern Art, Norton Simon Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Corcoran Museum, and Hirschhorn Art Museum among others. The late artist said of his work, “Form is born of color. It is the emotional and spiritual I search for. It is a unity and harmony in opposites resolving their confict to which my exacting ways are dedicated.”

Next September, 2011, through its broad investigation into Los Angeles’ historic art developments and achievements from 1940 - 1980, the Getty Museum will re-perceive Light and Space and place it in its ultimate position as one of America’s greatest art movements - begun and developed in Los Angeles with Los Angeles artists. Norman Zammitt will be shown in context at the Getty during Pacifc Standard Time. Norman Zammitt: Pure Light and Space runs through January 30 th and ofers a perfect introduction to the artist and his masterful works. MICHAEL H.
