PREFACE Ten years after the publication of my last book of music I’ve finally managed to pull together a few tunes—some my own and some, this time around, from the minds of others. I think you will find this collection of tunes particularly diverse in form and approach. Thanks in large part to the generosity of my fellow composers you’ll find this collection offering up a broad variety of music: there’s hardly a Highland bagpipe tune style overlooked. My sincere thanks to all the composers who allowed for the inclusion of their music; special thanks to Gavin Stoddart: he kindly allowed a number of his father’s tunes to be published. It’s safe to say: we’re all glad of that. Thanks, too, to Iain MacDonald (the one from Saskatchewan) for his eagle eye edits. My biggest debt of gratitude and especially huge thanks to Graham Schmidt: from where I sit today he is surely the world’s most enthusiastic and talented typesetting graphic-designing piper - a name to watch. I hope you enjoy the music. Michael Grey Dundas, Ontario, Canada October 2006

George Stoddart always enjoyed a close relationship with the Royal Scottish Pipers Society. James Burnet, a former Headmaster of Edinburgh Academy junior school, took a personal interest in the promotion of piping amongst young people. He was Pipe Major of the Society when he inspired the composition of this tune. -GS

Originally a slow march called Palmer’s Cross, this tune was meant for an officer friend of the composer, but he preferred it to be called after his family estate. After hearing it wrongly played as The Battle of Palmer’s Cross the composer decided to alter the name. On a visit to Alex MacDonald in Carloway, Isle of Lewis, and wanting to compose something as a thank you to the people for their hospitality, he remembered Palmer’s Cross. He decided he had never got it right—especially as it was mistaken for a battle—and reworked it as a slow waltz, put a lyric to it, and called it Carloway. -GS

Willie Ross composed the march Mrs. Pat MacLaren for Iain’s mother. George thought that Iain’s General Practitioner wife, Fiona (who has stepped graciously into her mother-in-law’s shoes), warranted a tune of her own. Iain is a very enthusiastic country-dancer—so he got the jig. -GS

To me, the beauty of this phrase is its completely nondescript ambivalence.

The "Vaporetto" is the name given the famed Venice water taxis. I wrote this tune while listening to the hypnotic workings of the boat’s engine… (joking - did nothing of the kind). I think I wrote this tune in my kitchen - a tune for a pipe band. I recommend Venice; a fantastic place.

Her husband Alex is prominent in civic affairs in the Highland Region. The friendship with the Stoddarts began when sons Calum and John came for piping tuition.
