a Note from "ALL CHILDREN, EXCEPT ONE, GROW UP." This is the opening line of J.M. Barrie’s gift to the world we all know as Peter Pan, the story we could all claim as our own as it holds that piece of childhood we never want to let go of. Before it was a Disney Classic, it was a story. First a play, and then a novel, which I chose to use as my inspiration for this collection. With my passion for vintage storybooks...the colors, designs and classic magic...I wanted this textile collection to remind us of those children from turn of the century London who happen upon an incredible adventure, as well as the actual book itself... both in color and subject. Inspired from linen storybook covers and clothing from the time period...slate blues, dusty pinks, soft peaches of tinted paper and that vintage storybook-cover green.... for the lack of a better name...this collection is a change of pace from previous collections of mine, but truly reflects the nostalgia and sweetness of a Peter Pan childhood. Toiles, silhouettes, delicate etching inspired designs and hand drawn line work reflective of those early page illustrations, covers and endpapers. And how about the fact that these colors, while reflective of a century or more ago, are coming back as strong statements in fashion and design! Each design in this collection comes from chapter titles, phrases or names from the book. For instance, the print of ‘The Little House’ depicts the scene when Wendy meets the lost boys and becomes their “mother” and promptly reads them a story and puts them to bed, which is also the title for chapter 6 in the book. “Girls are much too clever” is a favorite line of mine from the novel, and this print depicts the girls in Peter Pan: Wendy, Tinkerbell, Tiger Lily and a Mermaid, as a reminder that this isn’t just a story for boys. And “Awfully Big Adventure” is a print after another favorite line, where Peter famously says, “To die would be an awfully big adventure,” reminding us all that Peter Pan found adventure in everything he encountered...even the foreboding Captain Hook. This collection has been one I’ve waited to create for a long time, and one I found intimidating because it’s a story so well loved. With my inspiration coming from that classic novel, yet mixing in colors and designs that are once again popular and resurfacing, I hope that this Peter Pan fabric collection will inspire the eternal child within us, satisfy nostalgia for a time past, and offer classic new prints for this well-loved story.
