Whole Foods Market currently uses the equivalent of 33.6 football fields of material annually on vinyl signage. This unsustainable practice is one of the only practices that violates the company’s Green Mission. In Spring 2013, Whole Foods Market engaged the Center for Social Design at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) to research the problem and identify innovative solutions. The design team’s final recommendation was to re-use vinyl in the form of shade structures for urban public spaces (play areas, gardens, urban farms, parks, schools). For individual Whole Foods Market stores and local non-profits interested in installing their own shade structure, this guide book contains structural drawings, tips, and vendor recommendations.
