In 1962, The Miami Student reported that if passed, a new bill would have the president and vice president elected directly by the student body rather than by senate. Senators said it was important for students to have direct involvement in choosing their leaders and hoped this would spur interest on the student body’s behalf.

Christopher Hitchens to discuss controversial book on religion By Dylan Tussel Senior Staff Writer
“Faith is the most overrated of the virtues –– there is a serious danger now to civilization from religious fundamentalists of all kinds.” Christopher Hitchens, author of the No.1 New York Times Bestseller, “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” spoke these empirically proven words, and he is coming Wednesday to share his perspective on religion at Miami University. Hitchens Hitchens grew up in England where religion is compulsory in schools. His mother came from a Jewish family, and his father from a Baptist family, but neither of his parents actively practiced their religions. Hitchens described how a childhood experience in his nature class opened his eyes to religion’s inherent nonsense. “I had a teacher when I was about 10,” Hitchens said. “One day she said, ‘Look boys, notice the trees and the grass and the vegetation and everything are lovely shades of green, which is a wonderful thing because it’s the color that’s the most restful to our eyes. Imagine if God had made the grass orange or purple or something that was clashing, how horrible that would be. But you can see how God is so good because he made everything green.’” Hitchens said his common sense led him in a different direction from his teacher. “I thought to myself that’s complete nonsense; it must be the other way around,” Hitchens said. “Our eyes have gotten used to the green, rather than the trees adapting to our eyes. I just knew by sort of

’Hawks head to CCHA By Erika Hadley Senior Staff Writer
Over the course of the past five seasons, the Miami University men’s ice hockey team has compiled the best winning record of any team in the country. During that time span, the RedHawks have won two CCHA regular season titles, played in two conference finals in Detroit, qualified for the NCAA tournament every year and come within inches and seconds of clinching the national championship. Despite all of this success, however, the Brotherhood has never triumphed in the CCHA post-season tournament … until now. In 2005-06, after winning the regular season title, the Red and White cruised past Western Michigan University in the CCHA tournament quarterfinals and
dominated Northern Michigan University in the semifinals before meeting its match in Michigan State University during the title game. The Spartans downed Miami 2-1 and freshman goaltender Jeff Lerg emerged as the tournament’s MVP and a household name. In 2007-08, the ’Hawks bested Notre Dame University in overtime in the semis only to come up short against the University of Michigan in the championship contest. With last Sunday’s 2-1 victory over rival Ohio State University (OSU), Miami punched its ticket to Detroit. The RedHawks will take on Michigan in the semifinal game March 19 at the Joe Louis Arena with aspirations of advancing to the title game and winning what they hope will be the second of three championships this season.

Difficulties addressed in use of trademarked university logos By Catherine Couretas Editor in Chief
The RedHawk was established in 1997, at which point there were five or six different varieties of the logo, according to Allen. Fenton said this logo today is typically held for just ICA use and identifying ICA teams ICA wanted a consistent mark, which is the logo we see today.
Student organizations now have the option of using the word RedHawk in various designs, with approval, after a debate earlier in the semester over the Residence Hall Association’s (RHA) desire to use the word for their annual RedHawk Hunt. Liz Kirkham, programming director of RHA, intended to begin campaigning for the campus-wide scavenger hunt, now in its third year, in mid-January. The group was stalled when Paul Allen, director of business services, did not approve the use of their logo, which included the words “red” and “hunt” with a generic “redhawk” image between the words. That logo was created because the group knew the official RedHawk logo was reserved solely for the athletic department.
This is the primary non-athletic logo, according to Allen. It has been around since 1997 and is used primarily in print or on the Web rather than as a commercial mark. “It’s kind of the identity mark of the university,” Allen said.
This logo is the most widely used across the whole spectrum, including athletics, students, departments, alumni and more, according to Allen. Fenton said the logo is used much more widely across campus as it was previously only used for athletics. It is now considered more of a “spirit mark” used to promote across campus, Fenton said.
