OFFICE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP

ASSOCIATE PROVOST’S PERSPECTIVE James T. Oris Associate Provost for Research & Scholarship

G

iven Miami University’s national reputation for undergraduate education, it may go without saying that Miami faculty demonstrate excellence in the classroom, in the lab, on the page, and on the stage. What is less often acknowledged, however, is their excellence behind the scenes. Without the efforts of Miami faculty and staff to attract external funding to support research and creative projects, few of the

2000 undergraduates who are engaged in mentored research and scholarly activity each year would have the same opportunity to experience the excitement of inquiry and discovery.

In FY 2013, Miami faculty and staff received 421 awards of external funding. With funding rates at some Federal agencies hovering around 10%, this figure demonstrates the true effort put into securing funding.

MYAAMIA CENTER

PAUL SCHAEFFER

The Myaamia Project became the Myaamia Center in February 2013, shortly after receiving a $124,292 grant from the NEH’s highly competitive Documenting Endangered Languages program.

Assistant Professor of Biology Paul Schaeffer received $582,000 from the NSF to study how gray catbirds deal with the energy demands of migrating from the Oxford area to the Yucatan peninsula each winter.

10-YEAR TREND It is no secret that the current funding climate is extremely challenging. As the 10-year trend graph below shows, Miami University experienced a drop in external funds during 2008 that parallels national economic decline during that time. Following the drop from FY2008 to FY 2009, however, Miami’s external funding has remained relatively steady over the past five fiscal years. $30M

FUNDING BY SOURCE Consistent with the sequester, Miami did in fact experience a decline in Federal funding in FY2013, securing $12,287,590 from all Federal sources, compared with $14,415,822 in FY2012. However, this decrease was largely offset by a 100% increase in funding from foundations and associations, which amounted to $2,343,838 in FY 2013, compared with $1,172,022 in FY2012. There was also a 25% increase in funding provided by business and industry in FY2013.

What’s more, the slight increase in FY2013 funding was accomplished despite cuts in Federal funding due to budget sequestration, which went into effect January 1, 2013, halfway through Miami’s July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 budget cycle.

FUNDING BY DIVISION Also encouraging is the diversification of units attracting funding across the University. While the College of Arts & Science continues to attract the largest portion of external funding, significant increases in funding were accomplished by the Farmer School of Business and the College of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences (formerly Hamilton and Middletown campuses). $1,068,417

nities for students. In FY2012, the Hamilton and Middletown campuses brought in a combined $1,312,633; in FY2013, the College of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences increased that figure over 90%, to $2,515,32. MORE TO THE STORY Of course, numbers don’t tell the whole story. Yes, research requires money, but few people get excited about funding proposals. People get excited about new ideas, groundbreaking discoveries, and thought-provoking art. And Miami researchers produced all those things in FY 2013. We offer some highlights below. We remain proud of the faculty, staff, and students whose work contributes to Miami University’s long-standing tradition of combining strong liberal education with outstanding research and scholarly activities.

The $1,804,926 brought in by the Farmer School in FY2013 owes largely to continued expansion of experiential learning opportu-
