Carta del Comodoro Commodore’s letter Estimados Socios: Recibimos la temporada 2020 concluyendo el actual mandato de esta Comisión Directiva. Como siempre, con el reto de consolidar las reformas y con el claro objetivo de incrementar las actividades del Club, optimizando la utilización de los recursos, medios materiales y de los servicios, guardando un adecuado equilibrio entre las áreas de aprendizaje, competencia y navegación social.

Fueron años de trabajo en los que -honrando las mejores tradiciones del Club el que desde su fundación en el año 1924 ha recibido con entusiasmo y hospitalidad a los navegantes del Atlántico Sur- hemos desarrollado una intensa actividad social y deportiva.

En efecto, el YCPE y la ciudad, fueron designados nuevamente como puerto anfitrión en la Regata Clipper Race Round the World. Dicho compromiso, que sólo pudo asumirse con el apoyo de las autoridades departamentales, nacionales y de nuestros generosos sponsors, determinó que recibiéramos a más de 700 tripulantes de 40 nacionalidades, los que sumados a sus familiares y público en general generaron nuevamente un movimiento de inusual importancia en la ciudad en baja temporada.

Asimismo, para la presente edición de la regata el YCPE participa con una embarcación propia. El “PUNTA DEL ESTE” es uno de los once idénticos barcos competidores que lucirá con orgullo el gallardete de la Institución durante las 41.000 millas náuticas de la regata, además de las escalas en 15 puertos que demandará la navegación alrededor del mundo y con el que hasta el momento hemos logrado una destacada actuación.

Se trata de una experiencia y opor-

tunidad única de aprendizaje para la Institución en la organización de regatas de primer orden a nivel mundial, a la que se suma la posibilidad de la participación de socios e instructores en la tripulación del barco.

Esta intervención determinó nuevamente una proyección internacional del Club y de la ciudad, con menciones en importantes medios de comunicación de todo el mundo que generó numerosas consultas e interés de otros Clubes náuticos -con muchos de los cuales se han formalizado convenios de reciprocidad que están disponibles para los socios en la Secretaría del Club- y de aficionados.

Capítulo aparte merece el renovado y moderno formato que hemos acordado con nuestro sponsor principal ROLEX y con el Yacht Club Argentino para la organización de la ya tradicional regata Buenos Aires - Punta del Este, de las que seremos anfitriones y estimamos que, como en el año anterior, hará que las competencias programadas resulten más atractivas para los navegantes.

Para esta edición de la ROLEX CIRCUITO ATLÁNTICO SUR esperamos la participación de más de ochenta embarcaciones, que presentará un espectáculo deportivo de alto nivel en la mejor cancha de regatas del continente, en la que aportaremos servicios, personal calificado de nuestro varadero, embarcaciones de apoyo y árbitros.

Por otra parte, la Comisión Directiva ha resuelto jerarquizar la Regata Barcos Clásicos, aplicando nuevos formatos y gestionando la participación de sponsors.

También corresponde mencionar el extenso calendario de actividades, superamos las 100 regatas durante la temporada pasada a las que se suman

las desarrolladas durante todo el año -entre las que tuvo especial destaque el Campeonato Sudamericano de la clase J70- sobre la que tenemos un especial aprecio dado que el YCPE fue el primer Club de Sudamérica en incorporar barcos de esta clase, el Campeonato Sudamericano de Soling y demás actividades que resulta imposible reseñar en esta oportunidad.

Asimismo, en la reunión celebrada el 21 de diciembre pasado, hemos realizado el lanzamiento de la programación de la temporada 2020.

Pero como siempre destacamos, la ESCUELA DE VELA es la base fundamental sobre la cual se apoya el futuro del desarrollo deportivo del Club y sobre la cual esta Comisión Directiva ha puesto especial énfasis. Hemos incrementado significativamente la asistencia de los navegantes más pequeños durante todo el año y adquirido nuevos materiales. Nuestro expreso reconocimiento al grupo de instructores que ha posibilitado este crecimiento. Al respecto de la clase Optimist, durante el mes de enero próximo, un equipo del Club con su instructor, participará -al igual que en los últimos años- de regatas organizadas por el YACHT CLUB DE MÓNACO. Esta actividad, que es una experiencia única para nuestros jóvenes navegantes, es el resultado de un convenio vigente otorgado entre los clubes y por el cual también competidores monegascos han participado y con excelentes resultados de regatas de clase Optimist en Punta del Este.

En el área social, los días lunes de los meses de enero y febrero, como se ha hecho costumbre en las últimas temporadas, nos honrarán con su exposición conferencistas de altísimo nivel quienes ya han comprometido su asistencia. Dicha programación estará disponible en el sitio web del YCPE y será comunicada

a los socios por el habitual newsletter.

Finalmente, cabe reconocer el esfuerzo y compromiso con la excelencia del personal y responsables del Restaurant del Club que mereció un premio así como la publicación de un destacado artículo por parte de la reconocida revista de gastronomía inglesa LUXlife.

Desde la Comisión Directiva mantenemos el firme propósito de generar actividades que, con servicios de excelente calidad, tornen atractivo el YCPE para los socios, sus familiares y amigos.

Dear Club members, We welcome season 2020 closing this Board of Directors’ term of office. As usual, with the challenge of consolidating the work and with the clear objective of increasing the Club´s activities, optimising the use of our resources, materials and services, guarding a proper balance between the areas of learning, competition and recreational sailing.

It’s been years of hard work during which -honouring the Club’s best traditions since its foundation in the year 1924, receiving with enthusiasm and hospitality the sailors from the South Atlantic- we´ve developed and intense social and sports activity.

In effect, YCPE and the city were designated once again as Host Port for the CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE. Such commitment, that could only be assumed with the support of local and national authorities and our generous sponsors, determined that we received over 700 crew of 40 different nationalities, which, in addition to their families and general public, signified an unusual, important movement in the city during the low season.

Moreover, for the current edition of the race, the YCPE is participating as Team Partner with the entry of our own boat “PUNTA DEL ESTE”, one of the eleven boats of the fleet.

Flying our burgee with pride during the 41.000 nautical miles of the race and its 15 ports around the world, so far the team has delivered an outstanding performance.

Furthermore, during the event held last December 21st, we´ve presented the programme for Season 2020.

This intervention once more promoted our Club and our city internationally, being mentioned in important media channels worldwide, generating dialogue with other nautical Clubs - many of which have signed reciprocity agreements available for Club members at the Secretariat- as well as generating enquiries from enthusiasts that are following the race.

Like we always underline, the SAILING SCHOOL is the fundamental base on which lies the future of the Club´s sports development and on which this Board of Directors has put especial emphasis. We´ve significantly increased the participation of young sailors all year round, and acquired new materials. We extend our gratitude to the team of Sailing Instructors who made this possible. Regarding the Optimist Class, during this January a Team from the Club and their Coach will compete -as in the last few years- in the Monaco Optimist Team Race organised by the YACHT CLUB DE MONACO. This activity, a unique experience for our young sailors, is result of the current reciprocity agreement between our Clubs, and reason why we have also welcomed sailors from Monaco, for races held in Punta del Este.

On another matter, it’s important to mention the renewed, modern format established with our sponsor ROLEX and the Yacht Club Argentino, for the organisation of the traditional race Buenos Aires-Punta del Este that we host every year, which we are sure will make the programme even more attractive for the competitors.

In the social area, every Monday during January and February, as traditionally, we’ll be having different talks presented by speakers of the highest level, who have already confirmed their attendance. This programme is available on our website and will be informed to our members in our regular newsletter.

For this edition of the ROLEX CIRCUITO ATLÁNTICO SUR we expect the entry of over eighty boats, presenting a nautical display of the highest level, in the best race course of the continent, where we provide services, qualified staff, support boats and juries.

Finally, I would like to point out the effort and commitment to excellence of the staff responsible for the Club’s Restaurant, that earned an award and an outstanding article in a renowned British gastronomic magazine, LUXlife.

On a different note, the Board has been working on improving the Classic Week, applying new formats and involving sponsors.

It’s also worth mentioning the extensive activity calendar, with over 100 races during the high season, plus those held during the rest of the year. Among those we can highlight the South American Championship of the J70 Class -which we are especially fond of, having been the first Club in South America to incorporate this class-, the Soling South American Championship and other activities impossible to detail in this opportunity.

The Board of Directors keeps its purpose of generating activities which, together with services of excellent quality, will make the YCPE attractive for its members, family and friends.

For our Institution, it is a unique learning opportunity and experience in organising world-class events, adding the possibility for members and sailing instructors to participate as crew of the Punta del Este.

KNOXJOHNSTON Ha navegado por el mundo solo, varias veces. ¿Cómo comenzó su pasión por el mar?

No lo sé, desde que tenía 8 años quise navegar, y cuando crecí ese deseo se mantuvo vivo. Nueve años después navegué, pero recuerdo que desde niño quería navegar. ¿Qué causó ese deseo? No lo sé, no tengo idea.

Aprendí a navegar recién cuando ingresé a la Marina Mercante. Tenía 17 años y medio cuando aprendí a navegar.

Hace cincuenta años usted realizó una hazañosa circunnavegación sin interrupción por el mundo, y lo hizo solo, convirtiéndose en una persona famosa en todo el mundo. ¿Cómo surgió esa idea?

Muy simple: otro navegante británico, Francis Chichester, dio la vuelta al mundo haciendo una sola escala en Australia, entonces pensé “¿y ahora qué falta? Dar la vuelta al mundo sin escalas”. De ahí surgió la idea.

Y usted participó en la regata de The Sunday Times…

Sí, eso dicen, en realidad nunca me inscribí… yo no era parte de la carrera, pero sabía que iba a participar en ella de todos modos… y luego decidieron que tendrían tres o cuatro personas y yo sería una de ellas. Me dijeron “haremos una carrera, y usted estará en ella”. Nunca me inscribí, simplemente fui absorbido.

Usted estaba diseñado para hacerlo.

No me preocupaba por The Sunday Times, realmente no me importaba. Iba a ir y eso era lo único importante. Ellos dijeron que tenía que zarpar el 31 de octubre y dije no, voy a salir en junio.

No comprendían que para pasar por el Cabo de Hornos (extremo sur de América) es necesario ir en verano, si sales en octubre significa que no vas durante el verano y eso es peligroso, no es como saliendo en junio. Entonces cambiaron las reglas y al final tres zarpamos en junio. Ellos opinaban igual que yo. Los del Sunday Times eran periodistas, no navegantes… ellos no entendieron y dijeron “Oh entonces no podrán estar en nuestras carreras”. “Yo salgo en junio, ¡no me voy a ir a morir por ustedes!”

You have sailed all over the world several times alone, how was your passion for the sea born?

I don’t know, I wanted to go to sea when I was 8 years old, so… nothing changed I went to sea, nine and a half years later, from that age I can always remember wanting to be a seaman so it just followed through, but what caused it? I have no idea. I didn’t learn how to sail until I was in the Merchant Navy, I was seventeen and a half when I learnt to sail.

Eran nueve competidores. ¿Todos del Reino Unido?

No, no. Había un italiano, dos franceses y seis británicos.

And you participated in the Sunday Times regatta…

Yes, so they say, I never actually entered…

I wasn’t in the race but I knew I was going anyway, and they decided they had about three or four people doing it and I was one of them, they said we will be making a race, and you will be in it, I never made an entry, we were just absorbed.

¿Cómo fue esa regata en solitario?

Bueno, no tenía noticias de los demás, yo solo navegaba… cuando se rompió mi radio no tuve más noticias, no sabía nada de ellos. Me enteré dónde estaban por un periodista en Nueva Zelanda, pero nunca supe de ellos, no sabía dónde estaban ni nada. No tenía manera de contactarme, solo podía recibir noticias si alguien me enviaba un mensaje. Tampoco tenía tiempo para eso, no había un horario específico,

The feat that you performed 50 years ago, by circumnavigating the world alone and without scales made you a world-renowned person, how did that idea come about?

Very simple: another British sailor, Francis Chichester, sailed around the world and stopped in Australia, once, what’s left to go around without stopping. That’s where the idea came from.

You were designed to do that.

I didn’t worry about the Sunday Times, it just didn’t matter to me. I was going, that’s all that mattered. And they said we had to go on the 31st of October and I said no, I’m going in June, because they didn’t understand if you want to go around Cape Horn (America’s Southern extreme) you want to go around in Summer. Setting sail in October you are not

entonces yo no tenía noticias de ellos ni ellos tampoco tenían noticias mías. ¿Qué tipo de equipos tenían en esa época?

Bueno, en ese entonces no teníamos satélites, por lo que usábamos un sextante y el tiempo, un cronómetro y tablas, y eso es todo, no tenía nada más.

Y mientras usted dormía ¿el barco tenía algo para timonearse solo?

Bueno, al principio sí tenía, funcionó hasta Australia y luego se rompió, por lo que tuve que equilibrar las velas con el timón. Tenía que equilibrar el barco, intentar mantener un rumbo recto. ¿Cómo era el tema de la comida?

Comes cuando puedes, cuando sientes hambre. Es bueno mantener un horario regular de comidas, entonces de mañana desayunaba, a la hora del almuerzo comía algo y de noche cenaba, porque es bueno mantener un orden. A veces comía cuatro comidas al día y otras veces solo tres, dependía del trabajo de cada día. Si trabajaba muchas horas quizás incluía una comida extra, dependía de las actividades de cada día. ¿La comida la cargó en el puerto o pescaba?

No, no estaba permitido tener ningún tipo de asistencia, entonces debíamos cargar todo en el barco al comienzo de la carrera.

Me pregunto cómo hacía con las fechas de vencimiento de los alimentos…

Nunca pensé en eso, eso es una estrategia de marketing que tienen los supermercados. ¿Sintió miedo? ¿Qué aprendió de usted mismo? ¿Hablaba con usted?

No, no hablo solo. Lo que la gente no entiende es que estás ocupado.

En aquella época, con el sextante y los cálculos, quizás navegabas dos horas por día, tienes que mantener el barco avanzando, reparar las velas o las cuerdas, cocinar, escribir un diario, dormir, hay muchísimas cosas que hacer. Estaba muy ocupado con todo el trabajo que había para hacer. ¿Quizás cantaba? (Risas) Bueno, hay mucho tiempo para pensar. En esa época leía poesía, solo

para mantener mi mente activa, lo consideraba una buena disciplina.

Llevé conmigo unos 105 libros. Pero luego de que la dirección automática dejó de funcionar, cerca de Australia, no tuve mucho tiempo para leer. ¿Qué sintió cuando terminó la regata?

Estaba ocupado, la gente no entiende eso. Todos piensan “Ah debe haber sido genial”, pero no, yo estaba preocupado por mi barco: “¿A dónde lo van a llevar?”. Y todos gritaban, festejaban, y yo les preguntaba: “¿Qué va a pasar con mi barco?. Porque el viento sopla bastante fuerte, ¿Dónde sería bueno ir?”. Estaba preocupado por mi barco pero nadie contestaba mi pregunta “¿¡Qué va a pasar con mi barco!? Contéstenme o me voy, porque no voy a arriesgar mi barco”. Finalmente me dieron esa respuesta que era lo único que les pedía.

La Clipper Race debe ocupar toda su agenda durante el año, ¿hace otras cosas además de la regata?

Si, compito, navego, me gusta mucho bucear, el pasado julio fui a bucear en las Islas Sorlingas. También me gusta navegar y correr regatas, pero hace cinco años que no lo hago de manera seria. La última vez que competí fue en la Route Du Rhum. Igualmente vendí mi barco de regatas y me compré una lancha muy linda y muy cómoda para poder bucear y hacer las cosas que me gustan.

Es un honor para nosotros que la Clipper Race esté en Punta del Este por segunda vez consecutiva, la única parada en Sudamérica. ¿Qué otras ciudades manejaron y cómo surgió esta oportunidad?

Bueno, yo estuve en Río varias veces, también en Salvador, Brasil pero no navegando. Estuve en Ushuaia, Argentina y en Puerto Williams en Chile. ¿Por qué elegimos Punta? Vine a Punta del Este en 2010 con la VELUX, nueve años atrás, y nos recibieron muy bien. Fueron muy amables y serviciales, todas las instalaciones son buenas. Cuando decidimos no ir a Río, luego de que cinco personas fueran asaltadas y por los problemas que tuvimos con las autoridades (los trámites fueron lentos y engorrosos), discutimos a dónde iríamos y yo propuse venir a Punta. En ese momento nos

going around in summer, it’s dangerous, so it’s not like departing in June, so they changed the rules, and three of us set sail in June in the end. They had the same opinion as me.

The Sunday Times journalists… they weren’t sailors, they didn’t understand. They said: “oh you won’t be able to be in our races”. “I’m going in June, I’m not going to kill myself for you”.

You were nine competitors, all from UK? No, no. One Italian, two French, and six British.

How was that solitary race?

Well I didn’t know about the other people…

I sailed, when my radio broke I had no news, so I didn’t know about some of them, I found out about them from a journalist in New Zealand, but I never heard of them, I didn’t knew who they were or anything. There was no way of making contact, I could receive but only if people sent me a message, and you had to have the time for that, you had no schedules so I had no news, and they had no news of me.

What equipment did you have at that time?

Well, there were no satellites, so we used a sextant and the time; a chronometer and tables and that’s it, there wasn’t anything else.

And when you were sleeping, did the boat have something to self-steer?

Well it did, it did as far as Australia, and then it broke, so after that I had to balance the sails with the rudder, so you had to make the boat balance, try to keep you on a straight course.

How was the eating?

Well you eat when you can, I mean, when you feel hungry, try to keep a schedule, the regular schedule, so in the morning I had breakfast, at lunchtime I had something and in the evening I had a meal, because it’s good to keep it regular, but you cook, sometimes you have four meals a day, sometimes you only have three, it depended, if you’re working long hours you might have an extra meal, so it just depended what you were doing.

But you took your food at the harbor, or you had to fish something?

No, you weren’t allowed any assistance, so you have to take everything in the boat at the beginning.

I’m thinking about the expiration date of the food.

I never even think about it, that’s a marketing thing for the supermarkets.

Were you afraid? What did you learn about yourself after that? Did you talk to yourself?

No, I don’t talk to myself, no… umm, you’re busy. On those days with the sextant and the calculations, you may be spending two hours

contactamos con Punta del Este y nos respondieron con mucho entusiasmo.

Luego de varias charlas acordamos que vendríamos a Punta, eso fue dos años atrás. Esto significó un éxito para nosotros, para el Yacht Club, para Punta del Este, y también debería haberlo sido para Uruguay, pero lamentablemente el gobierno no quiso involucrarse. Es una pena porque muchas personas no saben mucho acerca de Uruguay. “¿Qué es Uruguay? ¿Dónde queda?”.

“Es un secreto bien guardado”. Quienes tenemos la suerte de conocerlo pensamos que es un lugar increíble.

“Tienes que conocerlo, es muy estable, muy agradable, las personas son muy amigables, te darán ganas de irte a vivir a Uruguay, también es más seguro que la mayoría de los países de Sudamérica”.

Desde el punto de vista de Punta del Este, el hecho de que recorramos el mundo en un barco llamado ‘Punta del Este’ hace que las personas se pregunten “¿Punta del Este? ¿Qué es eso?”, “Es un balneario fascinante de Uruguay”. “¿Qué es Uruguay?”. “¡Miren el mapa!

Y encontrarán un país muy pequeño pero muy hermoso, un país estable, deberían conocer más sobre ese país” (risas). De esta manera le hacemos publicidad a Uruguay y eso es bueno para nosotros y también para Uruguay. ¿Qué opina del recibimiento que tuvo del público? Porque usted no pudo venir a la última edición…

No, no pude, mi hermano había fallecido. Llegar aquí y ver a las personas que quieren ver los barcos es genial.

Mañana vendrán 250 escolares y nunca se sabe cuál de ellos tendrá una idea.

Cuando tenía 14 años fui a mi primer show de barcos en Londres, y vi un barco que había navegado alrededor del mundo, eran una pareja y recuerdo mirarlo y pensar, “yo voy a dar la vuelta al mundo” y nunca perdí eso, siempre buscaba una oportunidad, tenía 29 años cuando llegó mi oportunidad.

Cuéntenos sobre las primeras ediciones de Clipper Race, seguramente hayan sido muy diferentes a las actuales, en cuestiones de tecnología, equipos, cantidad de personas y sponsors.

En la primera carrera no había sponsors, había 8 barcos y solo 120 personas en la tripulación, hoy en día hay alrededor de 260. Los barcos medían 60 pies y la

Maybe you sing? (laughs) Well, you’ve got time to think, I used to learn poetry, just to keep my mind active, I thought it was a good discipline. I took about 105 books. But after the self-steering broke, off Australia, I didn’t get much time for reading.

How was your feeling when you arrived after that trip?

Busy. People don’t understand that, you now everyone says “oh it must have been great”, but I said “no one is worrying about my boat, where is my boat going?”. And everyone’s making hurray, hurray and I said: yeah… “what happens to my boat? Cause the wind is quite strong, where is it good to go?”. I was getting concerned but no one answered mi question, I said “WHAT HAPPENS TO MY BOAT? or I’ll turn around and go, you know, because I’m not gonna risk my boat”.

The Clipper Race surely occupies your entire agenda during the year, do you do other things besides the regatta?

Yes. I race, I go sailing, go cruising, go diving, so I am always interested in that. I went diving last July for the cannons… in the Scilly Islands. I didn’t find any but… I love cruising and I like racing, but I haven’t raced properly for five years, the last time I raced was the Transatlantic Route du Rhum. I haven’t done any racing since, but I sold my racing boat anyway, and I bought a nice, very comfortable cruiser and I changed it so I could go diving and all the things I like.

It is an honor for us that Punta del Este is, for the second consecutive time, the only stop in South America. Which other places were handled and how did this opportunity arise?

Well I’ve been to Rio, a number of times, I’ve been to Salvador in Brazil, not sailing, I mean I’ve been to Ushuaia in Argentina and Port Williams in Chile, so why did Punta occur? I came to Punta in 2010 with the VELUX Race, it was nine years ago, and this club was the host, and they were very nice, very helpful, all the facilities are good. So when we decided we didn’t want to go to Rio because they had five people mugged and we had problems with the authorities, it had just been slow and difficult, we said “where else?” and I said “well let’s look at Punta”. So we made contact with Punta and we got a very enthusiastic response and, after some discussions, it was agreed “we’d come to Punta”. That was 2 years ago, that was successful for us and for the Yacht Club and indeed for all Punta del Este and it should be for Uruguay really. But unfortunately the government doesn’t seem to want to get involved, it’s a pity because to

most people in the world… “What is Uruguay, where is it… ?”. “It’s a well-kept secret” those of us who are lucky enough to know about Uruguay say “but actually it’s a hell of a nice place (laughs) you gotta go and see it, it’s very stable, it’s very pleasant, people are friendly you wanna go and live in Uruguay, it’s safer than most countries in South America”. From the perspective of Punta del Este, the fact that we go around the world in a boat called Punta del Este makes people say “what’s that?”. “This is a fantastic resort in Uruguay”. “What’s Uruguay?” “Look at the map! (laughs) And you’ll see a very small country, but it’s a very nice country, a settled country, a stable country, you should learn more about it!”. So we’re publicizing Uruguay, so it’s working for us and it’s working for Uruguay.

What did you think about the reception of the public here in Punta? Because last edition you couldn’t come.

No I couldn’t, my brother died. Well you go down there and look at the people that want to see the boats… that’s great. Tomorrow we got 250 school children coming, you never know which one will get an idea. When I was 14 years old I went to the first boat show in London, I looked at this boat that had sailed around the world, with a husband and wife cruising around… I remember looking at that and saying, “I’ll go around the world one day”. And I never lost it, I was always looking for an opportunity, and also I was the right age, I was 29 when it came along.

Tell us about the first versions of Clipper Race; they would probably be very different from the current ones, regarding technology, equipment and the number of people and sponsors.

There were no sponsors in the first race, there were 8 boats, and only 120 crew, whereas now it can be 260, the boats were 60 feet long and we went around the world in a different way.

Yo les dije “no me digan que no puedo ir a Cuba, no soy norteamericano”, entonces fui a Cuba, y me hice un muy buen amigo allí… ¡¿Fidel Castro?! (risas) No, nunca lo conocí… Mi amigo era ex capitán de la marina cubana, se convirtió en un gran amigo. Cuba me pareció muy lindo. Fuimos con mi mujer a la costa del sur, estuvimos de vacaciones dos semanas y fue hermoso, lo único malo fue que pensaban que yo era un espía. Cada vez que iba a nadar, o paseaba en canoa, ¡pensaban que estaba espiando para los norteamericanos!

Y luego de Cuba, ¿hacia dónde fueron?

Fuimos a Panamá, luego a Ecuador, Hawái, Japón, China, Singapur, Seychelles, Durban, Ciudad del Cabo, Salvador y a casa. Esa era la ruta. ¿Tienen planes, cambios o evoluciones para el futuro?

Sí, estamos empezando a considerar comprar una nueva flota de barcos.

Probablemente comenzaremos su construcción en dos años, una nueva flota de unos 14 barcos, porque hace 14 años tomamos una decisión: volvernos más internacionales. La mayor parte de nuestra tripulación es británica, y muchas personas de otros países quieren participar de la carrera, entonces ahora menos del 50% de nuestra tripulación es británica, el resto está conformado por personas de distintos países. Hay 44 nacionalidades en esta carrera, son muchas nacionalidades, lo cual creo que es genial. Somos los únicos que

hacemos esto y lo seguimos haciendo, porque hay personas que quieren formar parte de esto y para ellos es una experiencia única. Son personas comunes, al final de la carrera vuelven a sus antiguos trabajos o hacen otra cosa, no son marineros profesionales buscando ganar más dinero pero terminan la carrera siendo buenos navegantes y normalmente alrededor del 40% jamás se ha subido a un barco antes de unirse a la carrera. Son los mejores para entrenar porque no traen consigo malos hábitos, los puedo entrenar a mi manera desde el comienzo y la mayoría de ellos siguen navegando luego de la carrera, se convierte en un pasatiempo, y obviamente que son muy buenos.

Más de 5.000 personas han participado en la Clipper Race, es una gran cantidad, somos quienes hemos introducido más gente a la navegación en océano.

Usted conoce bien el mundo, los diferentes mares, islas, ¿cuál es su lugar favorito o algo que sea especial para usted?

Tengo más de uno. Por ejemplo la costa este de África, es muy hermosa.

También me gusta Groenlandia, fui el año pasado, ya he ido cinco veces, me encanta nadar bajo el hielo y bucear, buceamos debajo del barco, es fantástico. Tengo pensado ir a la Antártida el año que viene con la marina, porque Gran Bretaña tiene un barco allí. Para mí la costa oeste de Escocia es hermosa para recorrer en barco, es encantador y es bastante cerca. Para ir a Groenlandia hay que ir a Islandia y luego a Groenlandia, es un lugar muy lindo; también quiero volver a la costa este de África, hace 55 años que no voy, así que ya es hora de volver a ver cómo luce hoy en día. ¿Cuál es su tipo de barco favorito si tuviera que elegir uno solo? ¡El barco en el que esté a bordo! ¿Incluso un crucero?

Tengo un crucero. Y sigo teniendo el barco con el que di la vuelta al mundo 50 años atrás. Siempre tengo mis barcos preparados para salir a navegar, estuve pensando en comprar otro barco de regatas, pero luego pensé, me encantan las carreras pero ya tengo dos barcos… si tuviera otro barco tendría que pagarle a alguien para que los cuide. No. A mí me gusta hacer el

We went across the Atlantic to Florida… and then the Americans said we couldn’t go to Cuba. “Don’t tell me I can’t go to Cuba! I’m not American!”, so we went to Cuba, and I made a very good friend there.

Fidel Castro!? (laughs) No I’ve never met him, but my friend was an ex Captain of the Cuban Navy, he became a very good friend. I thought Cuba was lovely. I went to the south coast with my wife, we took a holiday there for a couple of weeks which was lovely, except I think they thought I was a spy: every time I went swimming, or we went canoeing, there was always someone there, watching me, as if I’m spying for the Americans!

And then after Cuba where did you go?

We went to Panama, we then went to Ecuador, the islands, then Hawaii, Japan, China, Singapore, Seychelles, Durban, Cape Town, Salvador, home. That was the route.

Do you have plans, changes or evolutions for the future?

Yes, we’re starting to think about a new fleet of boats, probably start building in two years’ time, a new fleet probably 14 boats, because we made a decision 14 years ago, to go more international. Most of our crew are British. We said: “well actually we’re getting people from other countries wanting to do the race, why don’t we advertise?”. So now, less than 50% of the crew are British, the other 50% are from other countries. There are 44 nationalities in this race, it’s a lot of different nationalities, which I think it’s great. No one else does anything like this, so we will continue to do it, because there are people that want to do it and it is a unique experience for them. You know it’s ordinary people, at the end of the race they go back to their old jobs, or something else, they are not professional sailors looking for more money, but at the end of the race they are good sailors, they are good seamen, and usually, near 40% have never been on a boat when they join us. They’re the best to train, they have no bad habits, I can train them my way from the start, but most of them keep sailing, it becomes a hobby, and of course they are good enough. Over 5,000 people have done the Clipper Race. It’s a lot of people, we’ve introduced more people to sailing than anyone else in the ocean sailing.

You know the world, what’s your favorite place, the different seas, islands, or something that’s special for you?

I have more than one, because they’re great places to go. East coast of Africa, that’s lovely. Greenland, I went last year, I’ve been there five times, I like going through the ice and diving. We dive under the boat, it’s fantastic, I might go the Antarctic next year with the navy, cause Britain keeps a navy ship down there. West coast of Scotland, that’s a lovely cruising, it’s lovely out there,

Usted construyó su barco en India y quiso viajar en él al Reino Unido pero su mujer no…

Es cierto, porque teníamos a la bebé y a mi mujer le preocupaba, entonces eso causó una fricción… pero llevé el barco a casa, fuimos a Sudáfrica, donde fui capitán de un barco durante un tiempo. Pero el Sunday Times nunca entendió eso, nunca comprendieron cuánta experiencia tenía. Su favorito era el francés; yo siempre supe que era bueno, pero también sabía que podía ganarle. Su barco era más grande que el mío, ese era su problema, no iría más rápido que yo. De alguna manera debía pasarlo y mantenerme allí, pero cuando perdí la radio no supe dónde se encontraba él. Todo lo que sabía en ese momento era que en el Cabo de Hornos yo mantenía una ventaja de tres semanas; él no podía alcanzarme, lo cual él luego admitió: no podía alcanzarme. De hecho se encontró con un pescador cerca de Tasmania y le preguntó dónde estaba yo. El pescador le dijo que yo había pasado por Nueva Zelanda hacía dos semanas, y ahí dijo “esto se terminó”… entonces yo creo que en ese momento decidió que no iba a volver. Es un buen tipo, solíamos escribirnos cartas.

El mar hace a las personas fuertes, seguras de sí mismas y sobre todo muy humanas, ¿qué mensaje le dejaría a los navegantes de nuestra región?

Bueno, lo primero que debemos hacer son algunos cambios para que los chicos puedan navegar, para esto debemos mantener los costos bajos, asegurarnos que los barcos y la instrucción sean accesibles para los niños que no tienen dinero, incentivarlos a hacerlo, así querrán tener un barco, quizás algunos construyan su barco, o algunos compren un barco viejo para restaurarlo, y decirles “vayan a navegar”. Se puede navegar en todo el Río de la Plata, también pueden ir a Argentina que está muy cerca, pueden navegar hacia allí fácilmente, pueden ir navegando a Brasil, salir a navegar, simplemente salgan a navegar. Si observas a los chicos cuando están aprendiendo a navegar, les enseñas muchas cosas, una de ellas es la responsabilidad. Ellos son responsables

por el barco y por ellos mismos, no van diciendo “Ayúdenme, ayúdenme, ayúdenme”, tienen que hacerlo ellos mismos, desarrolla su personalidad, los hace fuertes en sus mentes y les enseña habilidades. Cuando navegas un barco usas las matemáticas ¿no? Les enseñas cosas que no ellos no saben que están aprendiendo, no es como sentarse en una clase.

Es como aprender jugando.

Eso mismo, aprender jugando, es la mejor forma de aprender, por eso me gustaría que todos los niños naveguen, darles la oportunidad. Puede suceder que a algunos no les guste y eso está bien, pero hay muchos que realmente quieren hacerlo pero no pueden, entonces ese debe ser nuestro objetivo, que no hayan casos que no puedan hacerlo, debemos decir que sí pueden.

Hace dos años, William Ward dijo que cuando llegó aquí se preguntaba cuánta gente vendría y que estaba sorprendido y asombrado porque vinieron casi 100 personas al reclutamiento.

Si, hemos estado entrevistando gente, y también teníamos a Nano (Fernando Antía) con nosotros. Nano es encantador, es un joven muy agradable, es muy inteligente y quería aprender. Tiene un muy buen carácter entonces encajó muy bien dentro del equipo, tiene un buen sentido del humor. Gracias a Nano los uruguayos tienen una buena reputación en Gran Bretaña. Trabajó para nosotros durante todo el invierno en el reacondicionamiento de los barcos.

Usted tiene mucha confianza, pero quizás en las competencias uno puede ganar o puede “aprender”. Es decir, se aprende más cuando se pierde que cuando se gana. ¿Qué piensa de ello?

Ustedes nunca me vieron boxear, era muy bueno boxeando, pero eso es muy distinto, en una pelea de boxeo no sales segundo. Perdí dos peleas en 8 años, y fueron durante el primer año. Luego de esas dos nunca volví a perder una pelea, entrenaba mucho y muy duro.

Cuando entro pienso, “bueno es él o soy yo, mala suerte para él porque yo voy a ganar”. Aprendes más cuando ganas, porque siempre piensas que podrías haberlo hecho mejor… pero hice la Whitbread.

and quite close, Greenland is lovely, you have to go to Iceland and then Greenland, it’s a nice spot, and I’d like to go back to the east coast of Africa, I haven’t been there for 55 years, so it’s time to go back and see what it’s like…

What is your favorite type of boat, if you had to choose one?

Oh… the boat I am on at the time!

Even a cruiser?

I got a cruiser, I got my boat I took around the world 50 years ago, I still got that, both of them I can walk right this minute and go, I keep them ready to sail all the time. But I thought of buying another racing boat but I thought, actually, I love racing but I already got two boats… if I get another boat I’m gonna have to pay someone to look after them.

No. I like to do the work, I like to maintain them myself, I prefer that.

You made your own boat in India and wanted to go to UK sailing but your wife didn’t…

That’s right. Well we had a small baby, she was worried about it, so that created a friction, but… I got the boat home, we went by South Africa, where I was Captain of a ship, but the Sunday Times never understood that, they never got it, they never realized how experienced I was. Their favorite was the Frenchman and I always looked at him and said he’s good, but I can beat him, his boat is bigger than mine, that’s the problem. He won’t go faster, so somehow I gotta get ahead of him and stay there, but once I lost the radio I didn’t know where he was… all I know and subsequently we know I was three weeks in front of him at Cape Horn, but he wasn’t gonna catch me, which he admitted, he wouldn’t have caught me. In fact he met a fisherman off Tasmania, and asked where I was. The man said “he left New Zealand two weeks before”. He said it’s finished… so I think he decided he wasn’t gonna come back. Nice guy though, we used to write letters to each other.

The sea makes people strong, confident and especially very human, what message would you leave for navigators in our region?

Well the first thing we have to do, is make it possible for young children to go sailing, so we have to keep the costs down. We have to make sure that the boats and the instruction is available for lads with no money so they can do it. If you encourage them to do that, then they’ll go, they’ll want a boat and sometimes they’ll make a boat, they’ll build it, sometimes they’ll buy and old boat and do it up, and you say “go sailing”, the whole of the River Plate out here is for sailing, you got Argentina close by, you’ll sail there so easily, you sail to Brazil, go sailing, just go sailing. Ah, estuvo en la Whitbread…

Sí, mi segundo era Peter Blake, siempre estaba analizando “si hacemos esto podremos llegar hasta allá… ¿qué dice el clima?.”Yo estaba compitiendo contra Tabarly, que de hecho es muy amigo mío, pero se puso delante de mí, y pensé “no tiene sentido ir tras él, no lo vamos a alcanzar. Está Smith y estamos nosotros, dos barcos, pero él tiene que pasar por las Azores y eso lo frenará”. Fui allí, tuve el viento y lo pasamos. Y cuando nos acercábamos a la meta, llegó un barco lleno de periodistas franceses diciendo “¡Por Dios! ¿Segundo? ¿Dónde está Tabarly?”.

Lo miré a Peter Blake y le dije “hazlo”. Él se levantó y les dijo: “Está cuarenta millas detrás nuestro”. Cuando llegó nos preguntó cómo lo habíamos hecho, le dije que entrara al barco y mirara las tablas. Él dijo: “muy astutos”. Yo dije que habíamos tenido suerte.

Tenían que pensar mucho.

Sí, teníamos el barómetro, las nubes y la dirección del viento, y con eso hacíamos nuestros cálculos. Pero también debes decidir por dónde irás, si te acercas demasiado al centro de depresión el viento será más fuerte, las olas serán más grandes y tendrás que bajar la velocidad y no quieres eso, tampoco quieres irte muy lejos porque no hay suficiente viento, el secreto está en ese balance,“¿De qué lado quiero que llegue el viento a mi barco? ¿Si tengo un recorrido largo, dónde quiero que esté el viento?” Así es como navego, coloco mi barco para que el viento llegue a donde yo quiero, así tendré la velocidad máxima, y el resto depende de mi tripulación, pero si veo que no mantienen una línea recta les grito“¡Salgan de ahí, están haciendo que pierda la carrera, no vine aquí a salir segundo!”.

small children who are learning to sail, you’re teaching them a number of things: responsibility is one, they’re responsible for the boat and they’re responsible for themselves, you’re not saying to people “help me, help me, help me”, they gotta do it themselves. It develops their character, it makes them stronger inside their minds and it teaches them skills. After all, if you’re sailing a boat and tacking, what are you doing? You’re doing mathematics, aren’t you? It’s teaching things they don’t realize they’re learning, it’s not like sitting on a classroom.

It’s like learning by playing.

Yeah, the best way to learn. So I would like every child to go sailing, give them the opportunity, some may not like it, it’s ok, but how many out there would love to do it but they can’t? Now that should be our objective, there shouldn’t be a cant, we should say they can.

Two years ago, William Ward said “we came here wondering how many people will like to joinI am surprised and amazed that almost 100 people came to the recruitment”.

Yeah, we’ve been interviewing people, and also, we had Nano with us, and Nano is delightful, he’s a charming young man, he’s very intelligent and he wanted to learn, but he also has a very nice temperament, so he fitted well in the team, a nice sense of humor, so Uruguayans in Britain now have a good reputation because of Nano. He was working for us all the winter on refits.

You have a lot of confidence, but maybe in a competition, you can win or you can “learn”, I mean, you can learn more than when you win. What do you think?

You never saw me boxing, I was a very good boxer, but that’s really different, don’t come second in a boxing match. I lost two fights in 8 years, and that was the first year. I never lost after that. I trained hard, very, very hard. I’m quick, so that’s an advantage in boxing, so I said, I’m not gonna come second, but when you go in, it’s me or you, bad luck, cause I am

gonna win. You learn more when you win, because you’re always looking at something, I could have done that better, but I did the Whitbread.

Oh, so you were in Whitbread.

My number two was Peter Blake, always analyzing, “if we’ve done this we can be there, what’s the weather say?” I was racing Tabarly who I like a lot actually, we’re quite good friends. But he got in front of me, and I said “there’s no point on going after him, we’re not gonna catch him. There’s Smith, there’s us, two boats, but he has to go through the Azores it will be a high pressure, that will stop him”. I went there, and got the wind, and overtook him, and as we came in towards the finish line, the boat full of French journalists arrived and said “mon dieu, deuxième? Où est Tabarly?” (“My God! Second? Where’s Tabarly?”). Peter Blake said “go on and tell him”, I said “go for it”. He stood up and said: “he’s forty miles back there”. Then he came in and said “how did you do that?”. I said “come and look at the chart”, he said “that was very clever”. I said it was lucky.

You had to think a lot.

Yeah, we had the barometer, and the clouds and the wind direction, and from that you’d work out what was happening. You also have to decide where to go, if you go too close to the center of depression, the wind will be stronger, the waves will be bigger, you will have to slow down, you don’t want that, you don’t want to go too far, where there’s not enough wind, it’s getting that balance right, where do I want the wind?

From where on my boat, if I’m sailing long, where do I want the wind? I want it from there, that’s my best point to sail, because I would bring it forward, with my movement, but I won’t go in there, so what I want to do is put my boat, wherever it is, so the wind is coming from there, then I’ll get maximum speed, and then it’s up to my crew just doing a straight line, but if they don’t stay in a straight line, I shout at them, “get off now, you’re losing me a race, I didn’t come here to come second!”.

El 13 de diciembre de 1939, mientras realizaba un viaje de instrucción con alumnos de la Escuela Naval, el Crucero torpedero “Uruguay” recibió informes acerca de una batalla naval que se desarrollaba a unas 200 millas al sureste de Punta del Este. La embarcación, que se encontraba en práctica de navegación, se dirigió a la zona en defensa de la neutralidad de nuestro país, llegando a colocarse entre los buques combatientes y demostrando la entereza de su Capitán y tripulación.

Casi 12 horas tardaron los buques en acercarse a la desembocadura del Río de la Plata desde el inicio de la batalla el 13 de diciembre de 1939 en el Atlántico Sur, al este de la Isla de Flores.

La Batalla del Río de la Plata se inició a unas 200 millas marinas de la costa americana, aproximadamente por el paralelo del Cabo Santa María. Fue la primera batalla naval durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial entre buques alemanes e ingleses: el acorazado de

bolsillo Admiral Graf Spee, los cruceros ligeros HMS Ajax y HMS Achilles y el crucero pesado HMS Exeter.

Siendo aproximadamente las 1800 de ese día se percibieron los primeros disparos, fogonazos y cortinas de humo próximas a la Bahía de Maldonado y a la Isla de Lobos. Hasta antes de cruzar la línea que determina el límite convencional del Río de la Plata con el Océano Atlántico, habían mantenido fuego recíproco. Habían pasado unas ocho horas de abstención de acciones desde la mañana, cuando se produjo la mayor intensidad del combate. Tanto el Graf Spee como el Exeter habían intercambiado un rápido y nutrido fuego. Hubo muertos y heridos, pero los daños en el Admiral Graf Spee eran mínimos comparados con el infierno desencadenado en el Exeter, que navegó desde la mañana hacia Malvinas, con dos torres fuera de servicio, escorado, con incendios a bordo y un saldo importante de bajas y heridos.

On December 13th 1939, while making an educational trip with students from the Naval Academy, the torpedo cruiser “Uruguay” received reports regarding a naval battle occurring around 200 miles southeast of Punta del Este. The boat, which was carrying out navigation practices, headed to the defense area of the neutrality of our country, placing itself between the combatant vessels and showing the fortitude of the Captain and its crew.

It took almost 12 hours for the vessels to get to the mouth of the River Plate since the beginning of the battle on December 13th, 1939 in the South Atlantic, to the east of the Isla de Flores.

The Battle of the River Plate began around 200 sea miles from the American coast, near the parallel of Cape Santa María. It was the first naval battle during the Second World War between German and English vessels: the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, the light cruisers HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles and the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter.

Recibió sobre las 1645 la orden del Comando de la Fuerza (en esos tiempos Inspección General de Marina) de navegar hacia el sureste de Punta del Este en busca de los barcos que estaban en combate. Sobre las 1815, se produjo el avistamiento de los cruceros extranjeros navegando a escasas dos millas al sur de la Isla de Lobos, con rumbo oeste.

En los tratados relacionados con el tema, la participación del Crucero Uruguay es mencionada y descripta como notoria, temeraria y osada –además de eficiente– tal como lo expresó oportunamente el comandante alemán Capitán de Navío Hans Langsdorff.

En esos momentos, el HMS Ajax –donde estaba desplegado el gallardete del Comodoro Henry Harwood– navegó entre la Isla de Lobos y Punta del Este, ingresando en aguas territoriales de la República Oriental del Uruguay.

Cuando estaban próximos al ingreso en el estuario, el crucero HMS Ajax lanzó una andanada sobre el Graf Spee que no fue correspondida por el acorazado alemán. Su comandante explicó luego que no hizo fuego por estar en aguas de un país neutral, además de considerar la proximidad de la costa uruguaya y las poblaciones cercanas.

El Puerto de Montevideo Ya en el interior del Río de la Plata y sobre el atardecer de ese 13 del diciembre, continuaron los disparos desde el HMS Ajax y el HMS Achilles (crucero de Nueva Zelanda integrante de la escuadra inglesa) sobre el Graf Spee, que ahora sí, más lejos de la costa, respondió el ataque con otras andanadas. Fue entonces cuando el acorazado alemán se dirigió hacia el Río de la Plata y entró al Puerto

shots, flares and smoke screens were seen near the Maldonado Bay and the Isla de Lobos. Before crossing the line that establishes the border between the River Plate with the Atlantic Ocean, they had maintained reciprocal fire. That morning, they had spent 8 hours refraining from any action, when the highest intensity of combat took place. Both the Graf Spee and the Exeter exchanged a fast and intense fire.

This resulted in several deaths and injuries, but the damages suffered in the Admiral Graf Spee were insignificant compared to the hell unleashed in the Exeter, which from that morning sailed towards Malvinas, with two towers out of order, unbalanced, with fires aboard and a great amount of casualties and injured people.

The pocket battleship also sailed west, but headed to the Port of Montevideo, also carrying several killed and injured men, as well as major material damages.

The Uruguay Cruiser, a warship of the National Armed Forces, was anchored in the Maldonado Bay, in an Educational and Patrolling trip with students of the Naval Academy. At around 1645 it received an order from the Naval Force Command (at that time it was called General Inspectorate of the Navy) to sail southeast of Punta del Este in search of the combatant ships. At 1815 the foreign cruisers were seen, sailing almost two miles south the Isla de Lobos, heading west.

In the treaties related to this subject, the

intervention of the Uruguay Cruiser is mentioned and described as remarkable, reckless and daring – as well as efficient – as was properly expressed by German commander Hans Langsdorff, Captain of the ship.

Back then, the HMS Ajax – which carried the pennant of Commodore Henry Harwood – sailed between the Isla de Lobos and Punta del Este, entering into territorial waters of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay.

As it was about to enter the estuary, the cruiser HMS Ajax threw a volley over the Graf Spee that was not reciprocated by the German battleship. Its commander later explained that they ceased fire because they were in the waters of a neutral country and also because they were near the Uruguayan coast and its nearby villages.

The Port of Montevideo On the evening of that December 13th, already in the River Plate, shootings continued from the HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles (cruiser from New Zealand that was part of the English squadron) to the Graf Spee, that now, being farther away from the coast, responded the attack with other volleys. It was then that the German battleship headed towards the River Plate and entered the Port of Montevideo at night with its lights off. The HMS Ajax was located around 10 miles from the coast (it passed less than 5 miles from Punta Negra); the HMS Achilles at the south of the English

El Crucero Uruguay, bajo el comando del Capitán de Fragata Fernando Fuentes, continuó navegando en el teatro de operaciones, cumpliendo con la misión asignada de indicarles a los barcos contendientes que estaban ingresando a aguas uruguayas.

Es así como en determinado momento, el Uruguay recibe la comunicación del Graf Spee de que abandone la zona, dado que se interpuso entre este buque y el Ajax, instantes después de que el inglés hiciera fuego.

El Crucero uruguayo hizo caso omiso a este exhorto del acorazado y continuó firme, cumpliendo con su deber, siendo testigo además de la invasión parcial del HMS Ajax a las aguas jurisdiccionales. Sobre esto, Uruguay hizo el reclamo correspondiente de no respetar su soberanía tal como lo comprobó y posteriormente denunció el buque de bandera nacional.

Ya casi por las 2100, pasando la Punta Negra, el Comodoro Harwood, ordenó el “alto el fuego” y el Crucero Uruguay y el Graf Spee se perdieron en

la noche navegando hacia el oeste, mientras el HMS Achilles por el sur y el HMS Ajax entre Isla de Flores y Punta del Este, cerraron el cerco.

Posteriormente la batalla tomó el cariz diplomático que se desarrolló en Montevideo y con el desenlace ya conocido, como todas sus consecuencias.

Numerosos objetos pertenecientes al Graf Spee se encuentran en el museo del Cuartel Paso del Rey, mientras que el mástil del Crucero Uruguay está en custodia del Yacht Club Punta del Este. Dos placas, una en el mismo palo y otra en un vértice del jardín donde se erecta lo recuerdan y testimonian.

En ese mástil flamea el Pabellón Nacional –como el día del combate– y se izan los gallardetes del Comodoro YCPE y del Vice, entre otras señales. Es una pieza de museo con la jerarquía de las instancias que vivió en aquel lejano diciembre de 1939.

Tener en custodia el mástil del legendario barco de la Armada Nacional que tuvo participación en la primera batalla naval de la II Guerra Mundial, en donde los contendientes oteaban los 360º de horizonte nada más que con la ayuda de prismáticos, constituye también un orgullo para los miembros del Club y una responsabilidad acorde al hoy distinguido símbolo.

The Uruguay Cruiser, under command of Captain Fernando Fuentes, continued sailing in the theater of operations, fulfilling its assigned mission of informing the combatant vessels that they were entering into Uruguayan waters.

This is when the Uruguay received a communication from the Graf Spee, to abandon the area, because it had come between their ship and the Ajax, right after the English vessel had opened fire. The Uruguayan Cruiser ignored the battleship’s request and maintained its position, abiding by its duty and also witnessing the partial invasion of the HMS Ajax to territorial waters. Uruguay filed the corresponding claim, stating that they had failed to respect their sovereignty.

At almost 2100 hours, after passing Punta Negra, Commodore Harwood, ordered the “ceasefire” and the Uruguay Cruiser and the Graf Spee got lost in the night sailing west, while the HMS Achilles from the south and the HMS Ajax between Isla de Flores and Punta del Este, closed the passage.

Subsequently the battle became a diplomatic matter and was handled in Montevideo, having the outcome and consequences that we know today.

In the museum of the Cuartel Paso del Rey there are several objects that belonged to the Graf Spee, while the mast of the Uruguay Cruiser is in the custody of the Yacht Club Punta del Este. There are two commemoration plaques, one of them placed in the mast and the other one in the corner of the garden where it stands.

At the top of the mast rises the National Flag – as it did the day of the combat - and the streamers of the Commodore and Vice Commodore of the YCPE, among other signaling. It is a museum piece that represents the importance of the events experienced on that December of 1939.

To possess the mast of the legendary boat of the National Armed Force that participated in the first naval battle of the Second World War, where the rivals scanned the 360º of the horizon having only the aid of binoculars, is also a source of great pride for the members of the Club and a responsibility regarding the symbol it represents nowadays.

Programa social Durante su estadía los tripulantes pudieron disfrutar de un variado programa de actividades organizadas por el Club. Los recibimos con un SHOW DE TANGO en el Club y al día siguiente tuvimos una CONFERENCIA DE PRENSA con el Skipper Chris Brooks, del barco ganador de esta Pierna, el Qingdao.

También nos acompañó el Skipper de nuestro barco Punta del Este, Sr. Jerónimo Santos González, y los cuatro tripulantes uruguayos: Alejandra Alvira, Sofía Strasser, Fernando Antía y Darío Rodríguez.

WELCOME ASADO La Intendencia Departamental de Maldonado brindó un asado para todos los tripulantes, en el espectacular ambiente de la Fundación Atchugarry - Parque de Esculturas. Allí pudieron probar nuestro tradicional asado, chorizo, cordero, verduras asadas y ensaladas, además del infaltable postre flan con dulce de leche. El personal del lugar acompañó la tradición vistiendo como gauchos y chinas, y la Orquesta Municipal deleitó a todos los presentes con su música.

BODEGA GARZÓN: Visita a la bodega y cata de vinos en el Club Directivos del Club acompañaron a Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, William Ward, nuestro Skipper Jerónimo Santos Gonzalez y tripulantes del velero Punta del Este, para una visita de Bodega Garzón, en donde realizaron un recorrido guiado por sus viñedos, bodega y disfrutaron de un ameno almuerzo junto a representantes del establecimiento.

En la cata de vinos realizada en el Club, más de 100 ilustres navegantes disfrutaron de una velada de distinción, con las líneas Estate y Reserva de Bodega Garzón, acompañadas de mesas de mariscos, fiambres y quesos elaboradas por nuestro Chef.

BLACK RIVER CAVIAR EXPERIENCE Black River Caviar - el 1er. Caviar del hemisferio sur - ofreció una velada de degustación a bordo del emblemático barco Metejón para deleite de los tripulantes de la regata. Mientras realizaban la degustación de su delicioso CAVIAR

Social program During their stay, the regatta crew had at their disposal a series of activities organised by the Club. We had a Tango show on the Club premises. The following day, we held a press conference with skipper Chris Brooks of the “Quindao” yacht, winner of leg. We were also accompaniedby the skipper of the “Punta del Este”, Jerónimo Santos González and the four uruguayan crew members: Alejandro Alvira, Sofía Strasser, Fernando Antía and Darío Rodríguez.

Welcome Asado The Intendencia Municipal de Maldonado offered an asado for all the crew members and authorities at the spectacular “Parque de las Esculturas”. Everyone enjoyed the traditional specialties, asado, chorizo, cordero (lamb) and salads, ending with the infallible desert “ flan with dulce de leche”. The personnel of the Foundation were dressed in “gaucho” and “ china” apparel and the Municipal Orchestra delighted all present with their music.

BODEGAS GARZON: Visit to the wine cellar and wine tasting at the Club Executives of the YCPE together with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, William Ward and our skipper Jerónimo Santos González plus his crew, were offered a visit to the wine cellar with a guided tour of the vines and cellars. Afterwards, they enjoyed a friendly lunch with the Garzon authorities. At the wine tasting held at the Club premises, more than 100 navigators enjoyed a wonderful night with the Estate and Reserve varieties of Bodega Garzón, along with seafood and cold cuts and cheeses prepared by our chef.

Black River Caviar Experience It is the first Caviar of the southern hemisphere - a tasting was offered to the crew in general, on board the emblematic yacht “Metejón”. As a result of this, the crew were able to prove for themselves why the famous CAVIAR OSCIETRA is one of the best in the world.

Iniciativas de nuestra Escuela de Vela Trabajamos duro en diferentes actividades relacionadas con el stop-over de la segunda pierna, organizamos dos grandes actividades donde participaron los tripulantes de los barcos y nuestros alumnos, las cuales estuvieron centradas en el cuidado y preservación del ecosistema marino y el sentir solidario que debemos tener como sociedad y marinos: • Limpieza de playa: la recolección de residuos y deshechos que aparecen en la playa, esta tarea se centró en la Brava a la altura de los dedos.

• Eco-kermesse: alineados con la consigna de preservar el medio marino como parte de nuestro deporte y contribuir con el entorno social que nos rodea, los fondos generados fueron con

destinado a UNICEF. Debemos agregar que este evento contribuía a otorgarle puntos extras al Punta del Este por el aporte solidario.

La Ecok fue un excelente ejemplo de trabajo en equipo, pues la Escuela elaboró los juegos, montó un taller para el reciclaje de los distintos elementos de nuestra vida cotidiana (envases, tapitas y otros materiales plásticos) así como restos de velas, cabos y balizas que utilizamos en la práctica de la vela.

En ese sentido, la boya de llegada y partida fue confeccionada con restos de boyas que habían sido descartadas y con el fin de darle la flotabilidad necesaria, fue rellenada con envases plásticos.

Además de la EcoK colaboramos con la Comisión de Regatas en la regata

multiclase del domingo 20; el valor de la inscripción fue destinado a UNICEF, donde se recaudó por concepto de:

• EcoK US$ 57,00 y $ 56.364,00 • Inscripciones: $ 5.100,00

Para la Escuela de Vela estar involucrada y cooperar con la Clipper Race fue una excelente oportunidad, pues motiva a nuestros consocios con el deporte de la vela e intensifica el sentido de pertenencia a nuestro querido Club. Esto último quedó demostrado con el apoyo de los socios, alumnos, familia y personal del Club que en todo momento estuvo para dar una mano, aportando desde la comida y premios para la Ecok así como disponiendo de su tiempo para estar presente, haciendo que estuviéramos a la altura de este evento de clase mundial.

Initiatives of our Sailing School we worked hard in various activities related to the stopover of the second leg. We organised two big activities for the crew and our sailing school students. They focused on the care and preservation of the marine ecosystem and the role we have as a society and as seamen.

- Removal of all the rubbish found on the Brava beach; this activity was centered by “Los Dedos”.

- Eco fair: falling in line with the aim of preserving the marine environment in close relationship to our sport, and as a contribution to the education of our society. The funds collected were sent to UNICEF. We must add, that these events helped to gain extra points

for our yacht “Punta del Este”.

This eco fair was an excellent example of teamwork. The sailing school prepared the games, created a deposit for the recycling of the different materials: eg: plastic bottles, bottle caps, other plastics and residues of sails, candles, lights and ropes which we use while sailing.

On the same line, we must add that the “buoy” marking arrival and departure was made of pieces of buoys in disuse, and to make floatable, it was filled up with discarded plastic bottles.

Besides all this, we organized a Multiclass

regatta on Sunday 20th. The cost of the inscription was given to UNICEF with the following amounts collected: - Eco fair US$ 57,00 and $ 56.364,00 For the sailing school, the fact of being involved in the regatta, was an excellent way to motivate our members and the community in the sailing sport. It also intensified the pleasure and satisfaction of being an active part of our dear YCPE. We thank the support of members, alumni and families and specially the club personnel which was available at all times all in assisting with food and prizes for the Eco fair as well as making us deserving of this world class event.

Clipper Connect Business Series Se llevó a cabo una nueva edición de la Clipper Connect Business Series, evento organizado en distintas partes del mundo para brindar una oportunidad de networking empresarial, y conversar acerca de cómo puede utilizarse a la Clipper Race como plataforma de negocios.

En esta oportunidad discutimos el panorama Uruguayo en el Comercio Internacional, contando con la presencia de los siguientes profesionales como panelistas para el evento:

A new edition of the Clipper Connect Business Series was held. The objective of this event is to help entrepreneurial networking and talk about ways of using the Clipper Race as a platform for business.

Charlas al público y a las escuelas Más de 500 niños vinieron a visitar la flota y subieron a bordo de distintos barcos; estudiantes de primaria, liceo y sumamos a ASOMA: Asociación de Sordos de Maldonado. Dos barcos fueron reservados especialmente para estas visitas, y fue tanta la demanda que varios grupos de chicos vinieron e hicieron cola para subir a los otros barcos abiertos al público.

Entre las instituciones educativas (públicas y privadas) cabe destacar las que vienen siguiendo las actividades del Junior Crew Supporters Challenge, creado por la Clipper Race para hijos de tripulantes con actividades por cada escala. Desde el Club, lo adaptamos y enviamos a instituciones, por lo cual para muchos de estos chicos fue aún más especial, ya que vienen siguiendo a la regata desde la largada en Londres, no solo con juegos y actividades, si no que se fueron enviando mensajes con la tripulación del Punta del Este, así que conocer el barco en vivo y a algunos de sus tripulantes, fue la frutilla de la torta.

Contamos con la presencia de la Escuela Rural N° 36 de Rincón del Diario, quienes aparte de haber mandado un hermoso

video a nuestra tripulación, ya habían recibido la visita de Alejandra Alvira.

Después del paseo recibieron una charla por parte de tripulantes, con actividades en el YCPE tras lo cual tomaron una colación antes de regresar.

Estas caras alegres se repitieron durante toda la jornada; otro de los grupos de alumnos fue el de la Escuela N° 5 de Punta del Este, quienes también comieron algo en el Club antes de volver.

Si bien esa mañana amaneció lluviosa, cabe destacar que varios grupos del Liceo 4 de Maldonado vinieron en ómnibus, a pesar de las inclemencias del tiempo. A la Escuela N° 5 de Punta del Este, que había planeado venir caminando, también se le evitó el chaparrón buscándolos con un ómnibus provisto por la Intendencia. ASOMA: Asociación de Sordos de Maldonado, también vino con otro bus de la Intendencia y disfrutó de una colación antes de regresar.

Finalmente cabe mencionar a los grupos del IUA, quienes fueron los que se aventuraron a venir con los más chiquitos, mientras los más grandes recibían al grupo de tripulantes que fue a dar una charla en la Institución.

Talks offered for the public and to schools More than 500 children visited the yachts and climbed aboard including students of primary and high schools and of the ASOMA (society of deaf people of Maldonado). Two yachts were destined for the visits. The demand was high and the queues long.

Among the state and private schools we must mention those that have been following the activities of the Junior Crew Supporters Challenge, created by the Clipper Race, for sons and daughters of the crew, with activities for them in each leg arrival. From our Club, we adapted the Challenge and sent it to various schools. For many of these children this had a special significance as they had been following

the regatta since the departure from London, no only through games and activities, but also sending messages to the “Punta del Este” crew.

To many of them visiting our yacht was the ‘cherry on the cake’.

The Escuela Rural No. 36 also visited the yachts. It is a state rural school, placed on Rincón del Diario whose pupils sent our crew a beautiful video. Our crew member Alejandra Alvira made a special visit to this school. A talk was given to the alumni and a small buffet was offered by the YCPE after the visit. Seeing the smiling faces of the children was a sight, and was repeated during the whole outing.

Even though that morning was rainy and cloudy, various groups of the Liceo No. 4 of Maldonado were taken to the port for a visit.

The Mayor of Maldonado sent a bus to pick up the pupils of the Escuela de Punta del Este as it was raining. ASOMA, the deaf people of an Association in Maldonado, came in another bus provided by the Intendencia.

We must mention the IUA pupils (private school) came with their youngest students, while the older pupils received the crew that went to give a talk in their School.

Con gran alegría entre los tripulantes, se entregaron los premios. Durante la ceremonia, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Presidente y Fundador de la Clipper Race, regaló al Comodoro Juan Etcheverrito un modelo a escala del Punta del Este, actualmente en exhibición en el Club.

Prize giving The prize giving was held with around 500 people attending the event and with great excitement the prizes were awarded. During the ceremony, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, President and founder of Clipper Race, presented our Commodore Juan Etcheverrito, a scale model of the “Punta del Este” which is actually exhibited in our Club.

Fue una gran oportunidad para conocer a los protagonistas y escuchar sus anécdotas, disfrutando de un exquisito menú preparado especialmente para la ocasión.

Dinner with the Skippers and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston Members and authorities shared a dinner with the skippers, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and the CEO of the Clipper Race, Sir William Ward OBE, including the 4 uruguayans that participated in the regatta. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the main characters and listen to their stories, enjoying a delicious menu cooked specially for the occasion.

SANTOS GONZÁLEZ Nació en Galicia y creció en Melilla (Norte de África): ¿siempre vivió “con vista al mar”? Además, su padre y su abuelo fueron capitanes ¿en qué tipos de barcos?

Pues sí, vengo de familia de navegantes y he estado siempre muy vinculado al mar. Ellos empezaron en barcos pesqueros pasando luego a barcos más grandes de tonelaje, normalmente de carga (containers).

Creo que a mi padre nunca le gustó llevar pasajeros, pues nunca entró en el rubro de los transatlánticos. Recuerdo que nos mudamos desde Galicia, muy lluvioso como sabéis, a una ciudad española en el norte de África.

Cambio radical y, como somos cinco hermanos, mi madre dijo “pues tenéis que empezar con algo”. Yo tenía 7 añitos y nos apuntó a una escuela de vela; ahí empezó mi amor por la vela, aunque ya había acompañado a mi padre cuando era más pequeño.

Ha competido muchas veces en campeonatos españoles o incluso representando a España. ¿Qué es lo más importante que aprendió de esas experiencias?

Sobre los campeonatos y las regatas nacionales en España e internacionales, he tenido la suerte de que siempre he sido muy receptivo para aprender de los buenos, de los mejores. He buscado tratar con los mejores, con campeones del mundo de diferentes clases que han venido a dar charlas o a enseñar y ver qué pueden

dar. En la sencillez en la navegación, en la posición del cuerpo, en el peso en el barco y las velas como lo más importante. Cómo “trimarlas” bien y cómo te posicionas en el barco es lo que más he escuchado de ellos, de gente que ha hecho todo el mundo en la vela. Hay que tener mucho de – como dicen aquí– esa “garra charrúa”, ese temple.

Me imagino que habrá aprendido en cuanto al relacionamiento entre personas, cómo hay que ser compresivo, solidario, amigo, porque no es fácil estar encerrados mucho tiempo. ¡Ahí tienes toda la razón! (Risas) Porque realmente el mundo de la vela, sobre todo el de cruceros grandes donde llevas pasajeros o llevas tripulantes lo más complicado no es navegar, el navegar se aprende mejorando cada día. ¡Lo difícil es la convivencia! En la Clipper Race somos 22 tripulantes y 2 profesionales: 24 personas que estarán un mes sin tocar tierra, pues eso requiere un manejo de la situación de las personas, con un poquito de dar “una de cal y una de arena” (como decimos en España). Entonces, mucha paciencia es lo que realmente hay que tener, eso lo aprendí ya desde hace muchos años.

No se llega a ningún sitio con impaciencias, sino con ese tiempo que hay que darle para que todo el mundo aprenda. Realmente todo el mundo tiene que pasar por un aprendizaje,

You were born in Galicia and grew up in Melilla (North Africa): have you always lived near the sea? Also, your father and grandfather were captains, in what type of boats?

Yes. I come from a family of sailors and I have always been strongly linked to the sea. They started working with fishing boats – that is where people begin sailing - and then they changed to boats of greater tonnage, usually cargo carriers (containers). I think my father never liked carrying passengers; he never worked in transatlantic cruises. I remember moving from Galicia, a very rainy city, to a Spanish city in northern Africa. This was a radical change and because we are five siblings, my mother said, “Well, you have to start somewhere”. I was only 7 years old when she registered us in a sailing school; that’s where my love for sailing began, even though I had sailed with my father before.

You have competed many times in Spanish competitions and even representing Spain. Which was the most important thing you learned in those experiences?

Regarding the competitions and the Spanish and international regattas, I have always been very lucky because I had the chance to learn from the good ones, from the best ones. I always tried to learn from the best sailors, from world champions in different categories that came to give talks or to teach.

From the most simple things in navigation, the position of the body, the weight on the boat and the sails, to the most important aspects. How to trim them properly and how you must position yourself are the main things I learned from them, people that have traveled the whole world on sailboats. One must have a lot of –how you call it here – that “garra charrúa”, that strength.

como cuando aprendes a conducir. ¡Nadie nace sabiendo! Tengo mucha paciencia para el que quiere aprender; el que no quiere aprender… ¡ya es otra cosa! (risas) Es el primer español convocado para capitanear un velero de Clipper Race. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de selección?

Lo de ser el primer español me llena de orgullo, no solo por representar a España sino al mundo hispano o latino. Espero que sigan más, que haya un uruguayo en la próxima edición si fuera posible en la Clipper Race. El proceso de selección fue muy, muy intenso: primero una aplicación entre

SIR ROBIN FUE EL PRIMERO QUE DIO LA VUELTA AL MUNDO SIN ESCALAS EN UN BARQUITO QUE… NO HAS VISTO ESE BARCO, ¡ES DEL TAMAÑO DE ESTA MESA! unos 200 aproximadamente, luego tienes un proceso de entrevista normal, como cualquier trabajo, para que vean que sabes de lo que estás hablando. Después son tres o cuatro días de pruebas en el mar; los directores de Clipper van y te ponen a prueba de una forma muy, muy intensa intentando, pues, sacarte de tu sitio.

Me acuerdo que me decía el director de regata: “estamos buscando un skipper español”, y yo: “uh qué bien, qué bien”, y él: “pero tenemos dos años aún para encontrarlo”. Te quieren desbancar un poquito y después quieren que vean que tienes don de gente; hacemos maniobras de hombre al agua y todo justo cuando estás en el peor momento con las velas llenas con bastante viento, entonces te lo ponen difícil para que vean que, primero, tienes don de gente, si sabes tratar bien y tienes esa paciencia que

hablamos antes y después si tienes los conocimientos de cómo navegar, técnicas de cómo navegar y resolver problemas que es algo muy importante… Pues intensa, intensa y quedé muy contento cuando me eligieron. Fue una inmensa alegría y estoy muy, muy ilusionado de participar en esta regata ¡y que sean más!

En una aventura de este tipo se combinan muchísimos factores como sexos, nacionalidades, idiomas, costumbres y psicologías. ¿Qué tiene que tener un líder de regatas para manejarlo con éxito?

Lo de la paciencia es muy importante. Y hay que empezar desde abajo.

Es por lo menos mi filosofía de la enseñanza, empezar desde abajo e ir subiendo escalones e ir formando una base bastante sólida, visto que muchas veces tienes alumnos o tripulantes que quieren ya saberlo todo desde el primer momento. Lo importante es que se forme una buena base y recién ahí se puede subir.

Mi abuelo siempre me decía una frase que me quedó grabada: “lo único que se empieza de arriba son los pozos”. ¡Puede usarla! ¡Es muy buena! Exactamente. Si no tienes una buena base después te tambaleas y no hay cómo aguantarse. Pero bueno, somos un equipo y me he enfocado mucho en que los tripulantes. Hemos hablado mucho, hemos hecho muchos meetings, hemos hablado bastante en cuanto a que hay que vivir esta experiencia lo mejor posible, al máximo. Es una aventura para disfrutarla y si no la disfrutamos ¡no lo estamos haciendo bien! En el barco Punta del Este estamos contentos, somos divertidos y la pasamos bien. ¡Hasta el color ayuda!

El amarillo es intenso, yo creo que una vez que lo estás pasando bien, que estás disfrutando lo que estás haciendo, aprendes más y tienes mejor performance. ¿Hay muchos que hablan español en el barco?

Pues en la primera pierna si, hemos tenido el grupo de hispanohablantes más grande, de los cuales hay 4 españoles, 2 argentinos, 2 uruguayos; después algún inglés que también habla español, eso ha sido desde Londres

I can imagine you have learned a lot about the relationships between people, the importance of being sympathetic, supportive, and friends, because it’s not easy being confined for large periods of time…

Oh yes, you’re absolutely right! (Laughs) Because in the world of sailing, especially in big cruises where you are carrying passengers or crews, the most complicated thing isn’t navigating, you learn how to navigate by improving each day. What’s really difficult is living together! In the Clipper Race we are 22 crewmembers and 2 professionals: 24 people that will spend one month without touching ground, so that means that it’s very important to know how to deal with people, giving, (like we say in Spain), “una de cal y una de arena“ – use the stick and the carrot-. So, what’s really necessary is a lot of patience, I have learned that a long time ago. Being impatient will get you nowhere. Everybody must experience that learning, like when you learn how to drive. Nobody is born knowing!

I have a lot of patience with those who want to learn; those who don’t want to learn… that’s a different story! (Laughs) You are the first Spanish sailor called to captain a Clipper Race sailboat, tell us about the selection process…

I’m deeply proud to be the first Spanish that does this, not only representing Spain, but also the Hispanic and Latin people. I hope there are more and more in the future, it would be great to have a Uruguayan in the next edition of Clipper Race. The selection process was very, very intense: first, around 200 participants applied, and then we had normal interviews, like in any other job, where they see if you know what you’re talking about. Then there were three or four tests at sea; the Clipper directors challenge you in a very, very intense way, trying to shake you up. I remember the regatta director telling me: “We are looking for a Spanish skipper”, and I said: “Oh great, that’s great”, and he said: “but we still have two years to find him”.

They try to derail you a little bit, and then they want to see if you are a people person; we carry out the man over boat maneuver at the worst possible moment, when you have the sails filled with heavy wind. They make it very difficult for us, so that they can see if you treat people with respect and if you have that patience that we were just talking about, and then, if you know how to sail, if you have sailing techniques and know how to solve problems, that is something very important for this job… So yes, it was extremely intense and I was very happy when they chose me.

It was a great joy and I am very, very excited to participate in the regatta, and I hope to experience many more!

In these types of adventures there is a combination of many different factors, such as gender, nationality, language,

hasta aquí. Normalmente hay que hablar en inglés en los barcos pero el español ha sido bastante fluído. En total somos de 19 nacionalidades y en cuanto a las edades, en la primera pierna teníamos al tripulante más mayor (76 años) y a la más joven (21).

Ustedes fueron los primeros en soltar amarras en Londres. ¿Cuáles fueron sus sensaciones personales en ese momento en el que este sueño se hacía realidad y luego hasta la victoria en Portimao?

La salida de Londres fue increíble, la torre delante se abre y había miles de personas en un ambiente estupendo en el Támesis. Yo he vivido muchos años en Londres, es un sitio increíble para hacer un evento como este y poder navegar por el río a través de esos edificios. Es una ciudad fantástica, salir desde el centro y que todo el mundo estuviese apoyando la regata y tanto barco –además de que mi familia estaba ahí– es muy emotivo y muy bonito. Lo de salir primeros lo he trabajado bastante, porque en mi equipo siempre tengo a todos en igualdad de condiciones, me gusta ser profesional, no solo en las maniobras sino en que todos representemos a Punta del Este bien y que todos estemos con el uniforme que hay que llevar, así es como me hacen ponerme primero en la salida.

Ustedes no venían primeros, pero ganaron el Ocean Sprint y después pudieron empezar a trepar posiciones hasta pasar a todos rumbo a Portimao. ¿Cómo fue eso, por el equipo, por la motivación?

Las regatas son complicadas; empezar una regata oceánica como ésta los primeros días cuesta, cuesta acostumbrarse a un nuevo equipo.

Habíamos entrenado pero no es lo mismo que la regata, así que los primeros días hay que empezar a unirse y empezar a funcionar como equipo.

Siempre hay mareos al principio, la tripulación se tiene que acostumbrar y después tienes diferentes opciones, es como un juego de ajedrez. Tienes la opción más común y después varias opciones que –si salen bien– pueden darte bastante ventaja. Nos gusta aventurarnos, analizamos los vientos y tomamos esa decisión. Pero el viento no cambió como esperábamos y

customs and psychologies. What should a regatta leader have to handle these differences with success?

Patience is very important. And it’s important to start at the bottom. At least that’s my philosophy regarding learning, to start at the bottom and climb the ladder, creating a strong foundation. Many students or crew members want to know it all from the beginning. It is really important to build a strong base and then continue learning.

My grandfather always told me a phrase that is etched in my mind: “the only things that begin at the top are holes”. You can use it! (Laughs) Oh, that’s an excellent phrase. Yes, I like it!

Exactly, if you don’t have a good foundation, once you stagger you won’t be able to remain standing. But well, we are a team and I have focused a lot in the crew. We talked a lot, we carried out several meetings, and we constantly say that we have to live this experience in the best possible way. We must enjoy this adventure and if we are not enjoying it, we are doing something wrong! We are very happy in the boat Punta del Este, we are a fun crew and we have a great time. Even its color helps!

It is intense yellow, I believe that when you are enjoying yourself, you learn better and improve your performance.

Are there many crew members who speak Spanish in the boat?

Well, in the first leg yes, we had the largest group of Spanish-speaking members: 4 Spanish, 2 Argentinians and 2 Uruguayans.

There were also some British members that spoke Spanish. That was from London to here.

Normally members have to speak English on the boats but there was a lot of Spanish in this one. We are a total of 19 nationalities and regarding the ages, on the first leg we had the eldest member (76 years old) and the youngest one (21).

You were the first ones to cast off in London. Tell us how you felt on that moment when your dream came true.

And after your victory in Portimao, how did you feel?

The departure from London was incredible, the Tower Bridge lifted and there were thousands of people enjoying an amazing environment in the Thames. I lived several years in London; it’s an excellent place to carry out this event and to be able to navigate the Thames through these buildings is just great.

It’s a fantastic city, I was thrilled to see so many people supporting the regatta, and so many boats – and also, my family was there – it was really beautiful. Regarding the fact that we were the first one to cast off, I worked hard for that, because in my crew everyone is under equal conditions, I like being professional, not only in the maneuvers but also in properly representing Punta del Este and that we all use the correct uniform; that’s why I was

chosen to be the first one.

You didn’t come in first, but you won the Ocean Sprint and then you managed to overtake everyone on your way to Portimao. How did you do that? Was it the team? The motivation?

Regattas are complicated; starting an ocean regatta like this one is very hard, you have to adapt yourself to the new team.

We had trained but the regatta is different, so during the first days we have to begin to work as a team. At the beginning of the races some of them feel sick, the crew has to get used to it, and then you have different options, it’s like a chess game. You have the most common option and then you have several options that – if they work out – they can give you an edge. We like to venture, we analyzed the wind and made that decision. But the wind didn’t change as we expected and it delayed us a bit. That gave us great motivation, because we said: “the Punta del Este cannot be that far behind”, so there we began to speed up. We also had the Ocean Sprints (two imaginary lines where the boat that crosses them faster gets the points), so we dedicated time and effort to it; we were pretty fast, and we won it! That lifted our spirits even more and we kept overtaking our competitors, one by one, when finally, we only had three or four ahead of us. Since London, I knew that once I turned the corner in Portugal, my tactic

nos retrasó un poco. Desde ahí ya nos dio esa motivación de: “no puede ser que el Punta del Este esté tan atrás” y pudimos empezar a darle velocidad.

Además teníamos el Ocean Sprints (dos líneas imaginarias donde el que las cruce más rápido se lleva los puntos), entonces ahí dedicamos tiempo y esfuerzo; fuimos bastante rápidos ¡y lo ganamos! Desde ese momento nos subió el ánimo aún más y seguimos alcanzando a uno, después otro y el otro y al final nos quedaban como tres o cuatro delante. Yo ya tenía planeado desde Londres que una vez que diese la vuelta a la esquina de Portugal la táctica era pegarse a tierra. Yo sabía, lo conocía y los demás no sabían eso y pasamos como una moto hasta Portimao. Fue una alegría y creo que aquí en Uruguay, en Punta del Este y en el Yacht Club particularmente ¡mucha alegría! Y me encanta dar alegría a la gente que pone su esfuerzo para tener un barco como éste.

Ya ha cruzado el océano 5 veces, ahora 6. El Atlántico al menos ¿lo había hecho hacia el lado sur? ¿Cómo fue esta experiencia?

Bueno, es un cambio, cambia todo una vez que pasas de hemisferio norte al sur. Las estrellas ya están del lado contrario y todo cambia un poquito.

Pasas por el Ecuador sin viento y después tienes los vientos típicos de esta zona, los que vienen de África y siempre son constantes en la costa de Brasil. Luego empiezan los pamperos, las sudestadas, estos vientos muy interesantes de esta zona del sur de Brasil y de Uruguay, la verdad que es la primera vez que los navegaba y fue muy, muy interesante. La forma nubosa que viene, la fuerza que tienen.

Me ha gustado mucho, he disfrutado un montón. ¿Cuál fue la experiencia más linda y la “vaya momento”, por decirlo de alguna forma, que les tocó vivir en esta pierna?

Lindas, muchas, ver al equipo mejorando y disfrutando, poniendo esfuerzo… ¿Quizás la más linda fue cuando ganaron en Portimao?

Sí, bueno, ganar está bien, está bien por un poco de reconocimiento porque trabajamos mucho en los entre-

namientos y allí hacíamos regatas de prueba que son de dos días en vez de un mes, ganamos muchas de ellas, entonces ese es un poco el reconocimiento de que: “sí, vale, somos buenos”. ¿Y en altamar?

Una buena fue surfear una ola y hacer como 27 nudos de velocidad; empieza a salir agua por los lados y es una sensación increíble el sonido de la fricción del barco con las olas. Todo el mundo se pone a gritar de la emoción; y cositas como ver ballenas que se te acercan. Una vez tuvimos aquí cerquita de Uruguay dos ballenas que se nos acercaron y estuvieron con nosotros 2 o 3 horas siguiendo al barco, no sé exactamente cuál era la razón de por qué estaban ahí, pero bueno, nos siguieron, se acercaron y estaban a apenas 2 ó 3 metros. Les sacaron fotos, increíble ver esos animales tan majestuosos y nada más. Y después lo peor: uno de los pamperos, los conocí bien, bien, porque se les ve venir y lo ideal es reducir velas, bajar las velas lo más rápido posible y te quedas con lo mínimo para que pase el viento y no te rompa nada.

Pero no fuimos lo suficientemente rápidos y teníamos al spinnaker número 2 puesto arriba y no nos dio tiempo de bajarlo. Tuvimos que aguantar con este viento fuerte y bueno, se cayó y se rompió. Eso lo sufres cuando estás mirando hacia arriba y no puedes hacer nada, la impotencia de no poder bajarlos, es un momento de unos 70 nudos de viento. Realmente no se puede hacer nada, tienes que esperar que pase. Además tarda como 10 minutos y ya está. Eso fue lo peor, porque no hemos tenido ningún accidente en la tripulación, gracias a Dios. Pero el daño material también se sufre cuando se rompen las cosas.

Y en el relacionamiento humano ¿sin problemas?

No, todos los días nosotros hacemos dos grupos, uno que navega y el otro que descansa y después vamos cambiando, entonces una hora al día nos juntamos los dos y hacemos lo que llamamos “la hora feliz” y es un poquito de buen rollo, de hablar cómo va la regata, compartir ciertas vivencias, y después alguien (vamos rotando) organiza algo como cantar

would be to stay near the coast. I knew this and the others didn´t; we navigated like a motorbike all the way to Portimao. We felt great joy and I think that here in Uruguay, Punta del Este and especially in the Yacht Club they were all very happy. I really love giving joy to those who work hard to make this great boat.

You have already crossed the Atlantic Ocean 5 times, and now 6. Had you traveled through its south before? How was that experience?

Well, it’s quite a change, everything changes once you pass from the northern hemisphere to the south. The stars are on the opposite side and everything changes a little. You pass through the Ecuador without wind and then you find the typical winds present in this area, that come from Africa and that are constant in the coast of Brazil.

Then the pamperos begin, the cold winds from the south, those very interesting winds from the south of Brazil and from Uruguay; it was the first time that I navigated them and its was very, very interesting. The shape of the clouds and their strength. I really liked it, I truly enjoyed myself.

Which was the best experience and the most extreme moment of this leg?

There were many good experiences, noticing the improvements of the team, seeing them enjoying, working hard…

Would you say the best one was when you won in Portimao?

Well, yes, winning is nice, it’s good to receive recognition because we worked hard in the trainings, we made test regattas that lasted two days instead of one month and we won lots of them, so yes, with this recognition we say: “yes, okay, we are good”.

And in open sea?

A great experience was surfing a wave and reaching a speed of 27 knots; water was coming from every direction, it was an amazing feeling, we could hear the sound of the friction of the boat with the waves. Everyone was shouting, thrilled.

Another beautiful experience is seeing whales. Once, we were near Uruguay and two whales came near our boat and stayed with us for 2 or 3 hours, they followed our boat. I don’t know why they were there, but they just followed us and were only 2 or 3 meters from us. We took some pictures of them; it’s amazing to see these majestic animals. And then the worst: one of the pamperos, I know them very, very well. You see them coming and the best thing is to reduce the sails, lower the sails as fast as possible, so that the wind passes without breaking anything. But we weren’t fast enough and we had spinnaker number 2 up, and we didn’t have the time to lower it.

We just had to wait with that strong wind,

una canción, contar un chiste o hacer un juego. Ahí es donde vamos haciendo un grupo positivo y bueno, intentamos que se mantenga ese positivismo y no tengamos roces.

Su barco es el Punta del Este ¿ya conocía Punta del Este o Uruguay?

Pues si. Los destinos de la vida… estuve hace 2 años en Uruguay por un mes sin nada que ver con la Clipper Race y estuve en verano además, a finales de enero. Fue estupendo, pasé unos días en Atlántida, después fui al norte (a Tacuarembó) a montar a caballo y a andar con los animales, con las vacas, en un rancho muy divertido. Después vine a Punta del Este unos días. Me gusta mucho lo que es la patria gaucha, ese tipo de eventos. Luego pasé por Montevideo un par de días; es muy tranquilo. Me encanta Uruguay, la verdad que tiene esa paciencia que me gusta a mí, los campos tan abiertos y las playas enormes, preciosas. ¿Cómo ha sido su estancia en el Club?

and well, it fell and broke. You feel very helpless because you can’t lower them, you just look up not being able to do anything, it’s terrible; you just have to wait for the wind to stop. It only lasts 10 minutes, and then it stops. That was the worst thing that happened, because the crew didn’t suffer any accidents, thank god. But we also suffer these material damages.

And what about the relationship between the crew members? Were there any problems?

No. Each day we make two groups, one group navigates and the other one rests, and then we change. Also, every day we have what we call “the happy hour” where the two groups get together and we have a good time, we talk about how the regatta is going, we share experiences and then somebody (we rotate) organizes an activity, such as singing, telling a joke or playing a game. This helps to build a positive group, we try to keep a good mood and avoid frictions.

Your boat is called Punta del Este ¿had you already been to Punta del Este or Uruguay?

Well yes. The twists and turns of life…. I came to Uruguay 2 years ago and stayed one month, the trip had nothing to do with the Clipper Race. I came during the summer,

towards the end of January. It was fantastic, I spent a few days in Atlántida, then I went north (to Tacuarembó) to ride on horseback and to see the animals, the cows, in a very fun ranch. Then I came to Punta del Este. I really enjoy the patria gaucha, those types of events. Then I went to Montevideo for a couple of days; it’s very quiet. I love Uruguay; I love its patience, the open fields, the huge and beautiful beaches.

How was your stay at the Club?

It has been amazing. Yesterday I was telling this to the directors of the Club. When we arrived to the pier (even though we arrived quite late, around 11:30 pm) there were around 300 people waiting for us, kids with their parents, all of them waving flags and cheering, it was a Sunday night, it was very, very moving. I was so moved that I almost cried! It’s incredible to see how people are so passionate about sailing, both navigators and non-navigators… there was a little bit of everything. I am very happy, they are so warm, the people of the Club help us in anything we need, I really haven’t seen a reception like this one, and let me tell you, I have been in lots of harbors across the world.

That’s great! Thanks a lot. You have visited many places here, did you enjoy yourself?

la Directiva del Club. En la llegada al muelle (y eso que llegamos un poquito tarde, como a las 23:30) había como 300 personas esperándonos, niños con los padres, todos navegantes con las banderas gritando, domingo a la noche, muy, muy emocionante. ¡Casi se me saltaban las lágrimas de la emoción! Es increíble ver a la gente que sigue la vela con tanta pasión, tanto navegantes como no navegantes… había un poco de todo.

Estoy muy contento, son muy cariñosos, la gente del Club nos ayuda en cualquier cosa que necesitemos y la verdad es que ha sido un recibimiento como los que no he visto en ningún sitio, y mira que he estado en varios puertos del mundo. ¡Qué bueno! Muchas gracias. Han realizado distintos recorridos locales, ¿qué le han parecido?

Llevo una agenda bastante atareada, pero sí, hemos recorrido. Como Bodega Garzón es uno de nuestros sponsors fuimos a visitar las bodegas y debo decir que es una bodega como pocas. Soy amante del vino y en Garzón nos enseñaron todo.

Cómo va a ser la producción, probamos los diferentes vinos y pienso que la bodega tiene que ser de las mejores del mundo. Han invertido mucho, haciendo las cosas muy bien y me encantó, lo interesante es que me dijeron que producen, que tienen 30 hectáreas de un vino que se llama Albariño que es gallego y lo produ-

cen ahora en Uruguay, entonces ayer mismo me pusieron a probar el gallego y el que producen en Garzón y te digo una cosa: ¡no sabría decirte cuál es cuál! (risas). En Uruguay han hecho un trabajo estupendo y además es un vino muy rico y estoy muy orgulloso.

Después hemos ido a varios asados ¡no podía faltar! Me gusta el surf y aquí en Punta del Este hay mucha ola, si tengo tiempo me escaparé a hacer surfear un poco. ¿Podríamos decir que esto es un sueño cumplido? ¡Sí, seguro! ¿Cuál sería el próximo, si lo tiene?

El próximo… (piensa). Pues quiero seguir en lo que son las regatas oceánicas y quizás buscar un sponsor e ir en uno de los Clases como los IMOCA, barcos más rápidos. La Clipper es una de las regatas más duras por ser una de las más largas, de más largo recorrido, más tiempo de duración y con el plus de que tu tripulación es amateur, es una regata que quizás te prepara muy bien para cualquier otra regata profesional. Entonces estoy abierto, hay muchas regatas oceánicas, me gusta la velocidad, intentar ir por ese camino, seguir la carrera de ser navegante oceánico, solo o con equipo, estoy abierto a las dos y me iré afinando. Ahora mismo solo estoy enfocado en esto, pero voy pensando un poquito en el futuro que va a ser este.

We have a very busy agenda, but yes, we visited a few places. Bodega Garzón is one of our sponsors, so we went to visit their wineries and I must say it is an exceptional winery. I am a wine lover and at Garzón they taught us everything. They showed us the production process and we tasted different wines, this must be one of the world’s best wineries. They have made a huge investment, making things the right way, I loved it. Something very interesting is that they produce a wine from Galicia called Alvariño, (they have 30 hectares of that variety) so they made me taste the one from Galicia and the one produced in Garzón and to be honest, I couldn’t tell which was which! (Laughs) They have made an excellent job in Uruguay and it’s also an exquisite wine, I am very proud. And of course, we also went to several asados.

I enjoy surfing and here in Punta del Este there are great waves, if I have time I will definitely go surfing.

Would you say that you have fulfilled your dream?

Yes, of course!

Which would be the next one?

The next one… I want to continue with ocean regattas and perhaps look for a sponsor and travel in one of the classes, like IMOCA, faster boats. The Clipper is one of the toughest regattas because it’s one of the longest ones, in length and duration and also has an amateur crew. It’s a regatta that prepares you for any other professional regatta. Garzón Petit Manseng Late Harvest

A popular Chilean strain. It’s a late variety and the last one to be harvested on vineyards. It needs time to mature in order to achieve maximum potential of typicity. This grape finds in Peumo region an exceptional terroir, where is able to acquire a deep red color with magnificent notes of ripe black fruit, dried herbs and chocolate. Taste wise, it becomes fresh and structured, with a long and pleasant end in mouth. Lamb and Carmenere, a pairing that complement each other in color, aroma and flavor.

A remarkable creation of winery achieved from overripe grapes, fermented in stainless steel tanks and later on, kept in French oak barrels for three years, achieving an amber wine, with reminiscent orange peels, honey, marcela flowers and linden aromas. It achieves an excellent balance between sweetness and acidity which turns it seductive. An ideal companion for our Chocolate Brownie.

l 16 de junio de 1809, entra a la Bahía de Maldonado el H.M.S. Agamemnon junto al resto de la flota inglesa al mando del Almirante Michael De Courcy.

Los cinco capitanes de la flota escucharon repetidamente todos los testimonios y encontraron que el barco podría haberse salvado si no hubiera sido tan malo su estado general y así el capitán Rose fue absuelto honorablemente.

A memorable personal privilege

Mientras ingresaba a la bahía, pasando entre la Isla Gorriti y la costa, golpea contra un banco de arena desconocido y queda varado. Su capitán, Jonas Rose, utilizó los botes del barco y otros medios para sacar su navío de esa situación, pero todo resultó inútil. Durante las aligeradas maniobras para zafar de la varadura, una de sus propias anclas terminó entre el casco del buque y el lecho marino, traspasando los maderos y desfondando la nave lo que permitió que el agua ingresara incontenible. El 17 de junio, los objetos valiosos del Agamemnon, su armamento y su tripulación fueron desembarcados con la ayuda de todas las chalanas y botes disponibles en la escuadra inglesa compuesta además por otros cinco buques. La acostumbrada corte marcial por la pérdida de cualquier barco de la Royal Navy, se realizó en Río de Janeiro el 7 de agosto de 1809, a bordo del H.M.S. Bedford. El capitán Rose condujo su propia defensa.

El 23 de marzo de 1997, Héctor Bado y su equipo de buzos, guiados por Mensun Bound (profesor de arqueología marina en la Oxford University) y director del Instituto MARE (Marine Archaelogical Research and Excavation) retiraron del sitio el primer cañón, que había sido previamente localizado por ellos mismos en 1993. Éste resultó ser uno de a 24 libras, 3.500 kilos de peso y 3,10 metros de largo.

Aquel día, me encontraba observando el desarrollo de las maniobras desde la cubierta de un barco anclado a 300 metros de los restos del pecio. En el momento en que la grúa consiguió sacar el cañón a la superficie, se divulgó a la comunidad marinera por el canal 16 de VHF el histórico evento.

Entonces, un centenar de embarcaciones amarradas a distancia de tres kilómetros en el actual puerto de Punta del Este, estrepitosamente tocaron sus sirenas durante unos 15 minutos, generando un estremecedor momento.

On June 16, 1809, H.M.S. Agamemnon along with the rest of the English fleet under the command of Admiral Michael De Courcy, enters Maldonado Bay.

(Second part)

While entering the bay, passing between Gorriti Island and the coast, it hits an unknown sandbar and is stranded. Its captain, Jonas Rose, used the ship’s boats and other means to get his ship out of that situation, but everything proved useless. During the lightened manoeuvres to get rid of the stranding, one of its own anchors ended up between the hull of the ship and the seabed, piercing the timbers and dismantling the ship which allowed the water to enter unstoppably. On June 17, the valuable objects of the Agamemnon, its armament and its crew were landed with the help of all the available flatboat and boats in the English squad also composed of five other ships.

The customary martial court for the loss of any Royal Navy ship was held in Rio de Janeiro on August 7, 1809, aboard H.M.S. Bedford Captain Rose led his own defence.

The five captains of the fleet repeatedly heard all the testimonies and found that the ship could have been saved if its general condition had not been so bad and thus Captain Rose was honourably acquitted.

Como mencioné, el 25 de abril de 2017, exploré con mi detector de metales, el lado norte de la Isla Gorriti, lo que reveló la existencia de un cañón de hierro enterrado bajo unos 40 centímetros de arena. Éste, resultó el segundo cañón encontrado del cual se pueda decir con certeza que participó en aquel decisivo combate de Trafalgar y el único en este calibre de a 18 libras.

Ha sido un verdadero privilegio desde todo punto de vista, ser el responsable del descubrimiento y documentación de este significativo artefacto británico desde que 208 años atrás, los marinos ingleses extenuados decidieran finalmente abandonarle.

Tengo entonces que agradecer una vez más a los arqueólogos a cargo del Departamento de Arqueología y Comisión Del Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación, dependiente del Ministerio de Educación y Cultura, por la confianza depositada en mis capacidades para completar esta significativa tarea.

the cannon to the surface, the historic event was disclosed to the marine community on Channel 16 of VHF. Then, a hundred vessels moored at a distance of three kilometres in the current port of Punta del Este, loudly touched their sirens for about 15 minutes, generating a shocking moment. The next day in London, H.M.S. Victory (the only ship that is currently preserved from those participating in Trafalgar) paid honours by firing salvos with all its cannons.

As I mentioned, on April 25, 2017, I explored with my metal detector, the north side of Gorriti Island, which revealed the existence of an iron cannon buried under about 40 centimetres of sand. This was the second cannon found which can be said with cer-

tainty that participated in that decisive battle of Trafalgar and the only one in this calibre of 18 pounds.

It has been a real privilege from every point of view, to be responsible for the discovery and documentation of this significant British artefact since 208 years ago, the exhausted English sailors finally decided to abandon it.

Temporada de regatas 2019-2020

uego de la entrega de premios de fin de temporada y luego de largar más de 120 regatas en 2 meses… el descanso no fue mucho. Teníamos un trabajo intenso en la segunda mitad del 2019, con la preparación de recibir a la Clipper Race y embarcar a nuestros tripulantes en nuestro barco Punta del Este.

La recalada de la Clipper Race ya fue comentada en distintos artículos, pero no solo nos dejó la satisfacción de ser protagonistas en el mundo de la vela, sino la responsabilidad de actualizar y preparar –meses antes– a nuestro Club para lo que se venía.

Gomones, edificios, equipos, lanchas; todo se puso listo ya en el mes de setiembre.

Luego de la regata Clipper, del 13 al 18 de noviembre organizamos el Campeonato Sudamericano de la

clase Soling. Nos visitaron barcos de cuatro países, incluidas dos tripulaciones de Alemania. El ganador fue Cicero Hartman, Comodoro de nuestro club amigo Veleiros do Sul de Porto Alegre. Fue una fiesta que disfrutamos los competidores, regatistas y socios en los eventos sociales, tales como el After Race en jardines y entrega de premios.

En las últimas semanas de enero los barcos más elegantes vienen a correr en el Circuito de Veleros Clásicos, y el cierre de enero se realiza con la tradicional regata Seguros Sura.

En diciembre organizamos el Campeonato Sudamericano de la clase J 70. Luego del éxito de la ultima edición del Circuito Rolex Atlántico Sur, las ganas de correr más regatas en nuestro club aumentaron alrededor del mundo. Es así que tenemos en nuestro varadero dos barcos de Italia, propiedad de la familia Rossi,

Todas las clases, de todos los niveles, tendrán una temporada 2020 intensa; esperamos superar las 120 regatas de enero y febrero y de esta forma nuestros socios regatistas tendrán oportunidad de disfrutar su Club y la Bahía de Maldonado. ¡Los esperamos!

Regatta season 2019-2020

A

fter the end of season awards ceremony and after starting more than 120 races in 2 months... the break was not much. We had an intense job in the second half of 2019, with the preparation of receiving the Clipper Race and embarking our crew on our boat Punta del Este.

The landfall of the Clipper Race was already commented on in different articles, but not only left us the satisfaction of being protagonists in the world of sailing, but the responsibility of updating and preparing - months before - our Club for what was coming. Ribs, buildings, equipment, boats; everything was ready in September.

After the Clipper Race, from November 13 to 18 we organized the South American Championship of the Soling class. We

were visited by ships from four countries, including two crews from Germany. The winner was Cicero Hartman, Commodore of our friend Veleiros do Sul club in Porto Alegre. It was a party enjoyed by competitors, sailors and partners in social events, such as the After Race in gardens and awards ceremony.

We also hosted regattas of the AUDO Optimist and National Laser Championship, with the visit of competitors from all the nautical clubs in the country.

In December we organized the South American Championship of the J 70 class.

After the success of the last edition of the South Atlantic Rolex Circuit, the desire to run more races in our club increased around the world. Thus, we have in our boathouse two boats from Italy, owned by the Rossi family, world’s fourth place. The winners

of the last three Rolex Circuits confirmed their participation, reaching a total of 34 registered, along with the four boats of the club. All of them already leave their boats until the Rolex Atlantico Sur Circuit, which will run from January 12 to 18, with the new format that was implemented last year.

In the last weeks of January the most elegant boats come to run in the Classic Sailing Circuit, and the closing of January is done with the traditional Seguros Sura regatta.

All classes, of all levels, will have an intense 2020 season; we hope to overcome the 120 races of January and February and in this way our sailing partners will have the opportunity to enjoy their Club and Maldonado Bay. We wait for you!
