FEATURE ARTICLE

Quickly improve forklift safety, productivity and drivercertification compliance from automotive and manufacturing to energy and health care — needed to improve safety and efficiency, it turned to a telematics platform. The company has operations in more than 65 countries and operates 74 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. It already used TotalTrax’s cloud-based solution in five of its distribution centers to monitor speed, collisions, braking, driver licensure and various safety metrics for its forklifts. The company found the platform to successfully minimize risk and optimize productivity at these five facilities. But, two additional facilities lacked vendor-supported fleet-management technology. It was time to expand this level of control. One of the biggest challenges of managing a warehouse or distribution center is knowing how to minimize risk, while maximizing productivity. But, if your systems are outdated and you're relying on time-consuming manual checks, this is costing you safety and efficiency. Many top-producing enterprises have turned to big-data analysis through advanced telematics for a solution that delivers results and increases profitability. Telematics is an investment that offers substantial ROI, allowing managers to instantly: • Monitor and control speed • Record all collision details • Monitor braking and driver behavior • Ensure drivers are certified for the vehicle they are operating • Ensure all training requirements are completed The end result from deploying telematics is minimized risk and optimized productivity — but where do you begin? Seek technology solutions that are tailored to your needs There are some products on the market that offer features that target overall safety performance of your forklift fleet. But not all telematics systems deliver the same level of detail, visibility, simplified deployment and cloud-based access. For example, when a global innovation company — which develops and distributes a wide range of products 8

Challenges solved by advanced telematics The company’s challenge was a common one — existing systems did not track incidents for analysis in safety investigations. In addition, the lack of up-to-date systems with the capacity for unit monitoring and licensure checks created the risk of untrained operators driving trucks and drivers potentially not following safety procedures. The company decided to deploy the advanced telematics platform at the two facilities, based on its track record of improving safety and operational efficiency at the other distribution centers. The results were an immediate improvement on safety compliance and safety investigation. And the cloud-based solution provided operator and truck utilization data that boosted productivity and operational efficiency. The takeaway on telematics In a nut shell, real-time visibility into the movement and performance of the company’s fleet — as well as individual drivers and their certifications — dramatically cut impacts, improved safety compliance, and increased productivity. The platform was compatible with the company’s existing products, and addressed its specific needs by generating reports to help control costs, improve safety and maximize productivity of vehicles, labor and warehouses. Dick Sorenson is director of product management at TotalTrax, Inc. TotalTrax’s innovative SX software enables optimum safety and warehouse productivity, remote-diagnostics, and datamanagement functionality in an intuitive, yet scalable user interface. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Choosing to make a difference, one pint at a time Lucy DelSarto, TVH

What if you were given a super power to save lives? Would you utilize it? Every eight weeks, individuals have the ability to be such a hero by donating blood. Blood is a life source for every human being. Blood cannot be made in a laboratory; it must be donated. Your gift of blood may help up to three people; however, donated red blood cells have a limited shelf-life of up to 42 days. Everyday blood is needed in hospitals for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma and accidents. The American Red Cross estimates approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the United States. An average of three pints is needed per blood transfusion. The number one reason donors say they give blood is because they “want to help others.” The convenience of a mobile blood drive increases the number of donors. Up to 80% of the American Red Cross blood donations come from blood drives set up at companies, community organizations, schools, places of worship or military installations. TVH provides three annual on-site blood drives. After our spring drive, employee Christina Scarbrough commented: “It feels so good to work for a company that recognizes doing good in the world. Thank you and TVH for hosting such an amazing opportunity for us!” Lack of information or fear are the two most common reasons cited by people who don’t give blood. Comments such as, “I don’t like needles” and “Never thought about it” can be addressed at on-site drives by Red Cross employees, fellow co-workers or company Wellness Ambassadors. A blood drive provides the opportunity to invite, educate and empower on donating blood. Often first time donors join in because of the convenience and support of co-workers. Looking for a great way to increase employee morale and participation in your wellness program? Consider adding on-site blood drives and acknowledge each donor with a personal Thank You recognizing them as a hero.

If you would like to know more about TVH blood drives and our wellness culture, contact Health and Wellness Coach, Lucy DelSarto at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

They decided to hold a puppy naming contest for their Canada employees where several employees submitted their choices. Out of all the submissions, TVH chose Webster, a beautiful yellow lab, and Wonder, the ambitious black lab. The pups are now headed to their foster families to start their training to soon become a helping hand to people in need. www.tvh.com

SAFETY CORNER

Pedestrian Safety Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems

Companies across the world spend many millions of dollars to train their forklift operators, but how many train the people that work around forklifts? Only a small number of companies do any pedestrian training and the majority of those do it as part of the facility orientation or as a generic two-minute video, neither of which is very effective. Pedestrians are involved in up to 40% of all forklift accidents and many end up being very serious or even fatal. One Central Ohio case involved a forklift running into a person and killing them. If you want to see the effect of a forklift accident on a family, you will want to see this video, located on YouTube at https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpXLIwxMNfs&t=22s. You can also access this video from our web site at www.forklifttrainingsystems.com.

What can be done? 1) Teach your forklift operators to look out for and yield to the pedestrians. Let them know that their actions and decisions could impact or end the lives of others and that they are a key piece in preventing forklift accidents. Focused, vigilant forklift operators, who are committed to safe operation, save lives. 2) Teach your (non-operator) pedestrians to look for and actively avoid interaction with forklifts, they may have the right of way, but could end up being “dead right.” You don’t have to look any further than YouTube to find handfuls of forklift accident videos that will assist you in making your point. Want to make it site specific, mount a GO PRO in back of the operator to show pedestrians how they look to the operator, leave it for a day and catch live action in your plant, be prepared to be scared when you look at the footage. You may be surprised how closely forklifts and people interact every day at your site. 3) Ask for safety suggestions to improve safety from both operators and pedestrians. Whether it is putting up a barrier, a mirror or redirecting traffic flow, it is easier and far less costly to do this BEFORE the accident. We have some good examples of forklift and pedestrian safety products on our web site. 4) Enforce your rules. Rules that are not enforced are called suggestions. Be sure forklift operators and pedestrians are following your rules for safe operation. If they are not you need to take action to change their behaviors quickly. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems. A leader in forklift safety training and related products, they can be reached at info@forklifttrainingsystem.com or 614-583-5749. INDUSTRY NEWS

MHI selects ITC Manufacturing COO as the Face of the Supply Chain International Technical Coatings (ITC) announced its Chief Operating Officer (COO), AriAnne Sproat, has been selected by MHI as the recipient of the 2017 Face of the Supply Chain award at last night’s MHI Industry Night at ProMat 2017. Sproat’s inspiring story was shared through the #iWorkInTheSupplyChain campaign among 16 other supply chain professionals, where judges were “wowed” by her story and recognized Sproat as a role model for the next generation of workers in the supply chain. Supply chain professionals who shared their story at iWorkInTheSupplyChain.com were automatically entered to become MHI’s 2017 Face of the Supply Chain. MHI’s Mpro marketing professional group selected the finalist who best represented the supply chain industry with the ability to create positive impact on people around them and who was recognized by their peers within the company. “This award could not be given to a more worthy and gracious leader than AriAnne. We are extremely proud of her and her desire to always strive for excellence; not only with ITC but with everything she sets her mind to,” said Faruk Gole, president and CEO of ITC. ”This is so exciting! It’s truly an honor to be recognized for my accomplishments and I owe a big part of that to ITC and the opportunities they have given me to achieve that success,” said Sproat. “I’m proud to be the 2017 Face of the Supply Chain and hope my story will make an impact on those who are pursuing a career in the manufacturing industry.” Sproat began her journey at ITC as a receptionist and now works as the company’s COO. She proudly wears the trailblazer label for women in business and, in particular, the manufacturing industry. As COO of ITC, one of the world’s leading supplier of steel products, she has spent the past 18 years as a role model, demonstrating to the company founders and all employees that there is no task she can’t handle – and handle successfully. MHI’s #IWorkInTheSupplyChain campaign helps promote jobs within manufacturing and the supply chain as an innovative and rewarding career choice as an effort to change the perception of working within the industry. The goal of the program is to connect, engage and inspire next-generation workers to pursue manufacturing and supply chain careers. www.itcmfg.com

Ergonomic lifter reduces back strains A lift-assist device designed by Cynergy Ergonomics has proven to reduce back strain and the workers comp claims that accompany them for a manufacturer of heavy duty automotive and truck batteries. The purpose-designed lifter allows a single operator to lift 150-pound lead battery plates, re-orient them vertically, and move them to an adjacent workstation for further processing. Prior to installation of the tooling, integrated with a Gorbel G-Force servo drive/PLC controlled lifter, these operations were manually accomplished, and shoulder and back aches and strains, and fatigue were common, as were the accompanying workers comp claims and lost-time incidents.

Wildeck debuts advanced system for hydraulically-operated lifts Wildeck, Inc. has introduced the most intelligent material lift control system in the industry. The company’s new SmartControl™ system for hydraulically-operated VRCs (Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors) protects the customer’s investment by sensing when one of a dozen or more faults occur. The SmartControl™ system immediately sounds an audible alarm specific to the fault condition. This saves precious time for the operator to quickly identify the fault and make necessary corrections before the lift or its cargo are damaged. According to Wildeck, their new VRC SmartControl™ provides the best overall value and ease of operator use. www.wildeck.com

DHL Supply Chain to use robots for order fulfillment pilot

New extended vertical travel scissor lift table

DHL Supply Chain announced that it will begin a pilot test using a collaborative, autonomous robotics solution within the life sciences sector at a facility in Tennessee in the next two months. The robots, called LocusBots from Locus Robotics, will be tested as a picker companion for piece picking order fulfillment in the warehouse. LocusBots work collaboratively and safely alongside warehouse staff, helping to quickly locate and transport pick items, so pickers don’t have to push carts or carry bins. The pilot rollout will utilize different picking strategies with the LocusBots in the warehouse. www.dhl-usa.com

Four legs act as storage stands to keep the load cell off the ground, which can be removed or left in place during use.

Edge protection seal profiles available from J.W. Winco J.W. Winco, Inc., announced it now offers GN 2180 and GN 2182 Edge Protection Seal Profiles. These RoHS compliant seal profiles, which can be used to seal doors, covers and hatches, are pressed by hand onto the front of metal sheets and plates. The embedded clamp insert prevents detachment, so glue or other adhesives are not required. When assembled, the profile should deform slightly, which ensures an optimal seal. Adherence to the guideline placement radii is recommended in order to ensure a tight profile seal and to make assembly easier.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Leadership focus transforms material handling company Often, to reach your goals, you must be totally focused. David O. Turner was managing multiple responsibilities for Pon Holdings when the desire to focus all his energy on Equipment Depot grew strong enough for him to take an ownership role. In March 2017, Turner resigned from the Executive Board of Pon Holdings to take an ownership and shareholder position in Equipment Depot. As the primary shareholder, Turner can now devote his full attention to Equipment Depot’s growth strategy and guide the company toward its full potential. “Over the past four years, the people of Equipment Depot have become like family to me. I wholehearted believe in this team and its future, so much so, that I am willing to personally invest in all of you and the company,” Turner said in his announcement to the employees. Pon Holdings continues to be a major stakeholder, yet this move allows Turner to exercise more direct control over the future of its operations. Turner continues to fine-tune Equipment Depot’s growth strategy by utilizing

He envisioned a re-imagined,

resources that many competitors cannot access, made possible with Pon Holdings’ continued financial backing. Having worked for Pon and Pon-related companies for more than 25 years, Turner says, “In my wildest dreams, I couldn’t have imagined the impact this company would have on my life. I’m not talking about the nine moves, or the six-and-a-half million air miles, or the many different Pon businesses I’ve been part of -- I'm talking about a family of people who have made such an impact on my life.” Who is Equipment Depot? It is America’s largest independent material handling and rental business with a trusted legacy of keeping businesses moving since 1951. Today, Equipment Depot offers five core products and services to customers. All five are available across their 35-branch network, stretching from the Northeast to the Mexican border, and are delivered by a dedicated team of 1,500 employees.

BUSINESS PROFILE best-in-service, here-for-you kind of company – with a primary mission to help its customers succeed. Turner has been intimately involved in realigning Equipment Depot’s mission. The focus is on industryleading customer service and its one-of-a-kind promise – Performance. Guaranteed. This pledge was developed following extensive customer, industry and competitor research. It addresses the day-to-day operational challenges customers face in their own businesses and creates a powerful message that resonates with them. “Within the last four years, we have implemented strategic initiatives that put us on the right path,” Turner said. “I believe in the Equipment Depot team and our business partners. Working together, we can serve our customers better. Delivering the very best service to our customers is our strategic vision, and it’s how we will stand apart from other dealers.” Service commitment is about providing support to minimize customers’ downtime and help them maximize productivity: Prompt service, reliable parts, on-time rentals, and product guarantee. Turner understands customers will not believe Equipment Depot is the best service provider in the industry until all its team members demonstrate, day in and day out, their passion to serve each customer. Since introducing the Performance. Guaranteed. pledge, the invigorated team has rallied behind the mission of being the BEST SERVICE ORGANIZATION. The Performance. Guaranteed. promise features five key elements: 1. Problem resolution – Employees are empowered to solve customer concerns on the spot. If a customer isn’t satisfied, it’s elevated to one of 5 regional leaders for immediate attention and resolution. 2. Prompt service – Ready to roll 24/7/365 days a year and backed by a 4-hour emergency response time, or the first hour of labor is free. Free loaners are provided on forklift and aerial lift repairs if technicians fail to fix it right the first time or by the time promised. 3. Reliable parts – All parts purchased are guaranteed for 6 months. 4. On-time rentals – Rental equipment will be delivered on-time as promised or delivery is free. 5. 30-day buyback guarantee – If new equipment fails to perform as promised and the customer isn’t

satisfied, Equipment Depot will buy it back. It’s that simple. Moving forward with their growth strategy, Equipment Depot is ensuring all its customer interaction points align with their service-first mission and improve the ease of doing business with them. For example, Equipment Depot is pursuing a digital transformation to make relevant information available when and where the customer needs it. Making inventory and pricing easy to obtain online will enable customers to better manage their rental fleet needs – quickly, easily and more efficiently. Turner concludes: “Service has always been, and will continue to be, the heart and soul of the organization. We want our customers to know we stand by our service and our commitment to support them. You hear other companies making promises, but we’re willing to make our Performance. Guaranteed. pledge, which we believe is a clear differentiator within the industry.” www.eqdepot.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

A lesson in maintenance! When I talk about the Tennant Model 355 sweeper, good thoughts enter my mind about the dependability and the longevity of this machine. Production began in 1992 and it was immediately a success in the world of cleaning. It succeeded the models 265, 275, 275II and 285. These were very good machines in their own right, but the 355 became a culmination of all that was good in those past sweepers. It was a wise use of the up-to-date technologies at the time and a machine quality that couldn’t compare. Here we are in 2017 and still I see the Tennant 355 used in factories on a daily basis. One item that made it desirable was that it was produced only in a Hi-Dump version, which means that the hopper could be dumped into a dumpster. At the time other manufacturers were still producing sweeping in a Low-Dump version. And, to upscale into a Hi-Dump was a higher cost, hence the popularity of the 355. As far as the longevity, the 355 was produced until 1999, when in June of that year the new Model 6500 rolled out. Among the other advantages were: 1) The sweeping path with the side brush was 60”, perfect for warehouses 2) The hopper capacity of 14 cubic feet and 1200 pounds of debris. 3) It was available in gas, propane and diesel. If you wanted something more environmentally friendly, well then, electric was available.

So when I received an e-mail that we have a customer that is stating that he has a Tennant 355 and using words such as “ junk” and “always broke-down,” I am concerned that something is definitely wrong. It just doesn’t sound right. When I requested a list of problems he was having he obliged. Wow I thought, this guy got a lot problems. He stated them and sent some pictures too! 1) The main broom just stopped turning. 2) The sweeper wasn’t sweeping very well at all and leaving a lot of debris on the floor. 3) It started making a funny noise it hadn’t before. 4) It wasn’t running very good as well. So let’s look at the main broom problem first, I told him to open the main broom chamber access door and take some pictures. He did so and set them to me. What I saw was astounding. Apparently you have a banding problem there, because the problem has to be that the metal banding that it used in packaging has become bound within the broom. I also told him to check the other side where the hydraulic motor turns the broom. I asked if it is wrapped around that area as well. And he said that it was. Well, I stated, you must remove all of the banding in this area. I would also replace the main broom because I would suspect it is damaged as well. And as I was shown, it was very much damaged as the bristles were also falling out. I suspect that just by replacing the main broom and removing the banding, you will have a broom that finally will sweep. I also suspect that the funny noise will go away because that was the hydraulics trying to turn your broom. Let’s get to your second problem of not sweeping very well. There are many reasons sweepers don’t sweep. Some of the most obvious are that the sweeper hopper needs to be emptied. Have you ever had a vacuum sweeper that wouldn’t sweep your carpet and upon further inspection the bags needs emptied? Same thing here, just a larger machine. You have to empty your hopper! Other reasons of the insufficient sweeping would be the brush chamber flaps are torn, the hopper filter is full, or the vacuum motor is not properly working. Moving on to the last issue of the engine not running properly: it probably needs attention as replacing spark plugs and such. If you haven’t performed any maintenance on this machine, you need to. He stated “this thing is going to be a money pit.” I told him, this is what has to be done and should be a “lesson in maintenance.” A well maintained machine is one that will always perform as it should. This should be a lesson for all equipment. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. For your comments or questions, please e-mail Mike at editorial@mhnetwork.com.
