PRESIDENT’S REPORT Once again that time of year has come around. Membership fees are now due, having being voted on at the April General meeting, with payment due by May 31st. Please see the notice that appears within this Edition, including the provision to pay by direct deposit to the Club Bank Account. Don’t forget to include your name in the payment detail to avoid confusion. Timely payment of your membership fees will ensure a more accurate and timely payment for our FWDV affiliation fees at the end of June. At this month’s May General Meeting we will be having a presentation on one of the tasks identified as needing attention by previous committees; that of the end-to-end process of conducting club trips. This includes the planning, running and reviewing of the trip, as well as on-trip procedures. This will be provided by way of a Powerpoint presentation, with your feedback being sought to then be included for discussion at the next Committee meeting. Thanks must go to Peter Devine for his efforts and assistance in bringing this process to completion. This will then form one of the key club by-laws. We will then focus our attention on another of the by-laws that has been identified as needing review. We will then present it for discussion at an upcoming General Meeting. Don’t forget about this Sunday’s (26th May) social bike ride event from Shepherd Rd in Glen Waverley following south along the Dandenong Creek. This trip has not been formally graded by the criteria that we usually use for road trips. Travelling along the Creek is fairly flat, and as water tends to run downhill, and south in this case, is considered relatively flat. Carry water bottles for fluid consumption. Either bring your lunch with you, or obtain from the café at Jells Park. We will return to the point of initial departure. The issue or difficulty of grading this trip, could be attributed to the fact that as most bicycles I have seen have two wheels where they are single rear wheel drive, with lots of personal involvement of effort required for the vehicle to move in the forward motion. The gearbox, almost always fitted on the rear axle, be it derailer or hub gear set, is also not fitted with a ‘reverse’ gear, so commitment to forward motion is paramount. In terms of choice of tyres, the section chosen is mainly asphalted, and would be suitable for most tyre types. The rules of aspect ratios of tyre width to wall height to rim diameter are not quite the same as for a car, so don’t go out trying to order tyres by the same rules, and obtaining tyres of the mud/snow category may be difficult, especially that I doubt that you would require them on this trip. Just as long as your bicycle is considered reliable and roadworthy. There are some special class of bicycle which are electrically power-assisted on either front or rear wheel, these classes are also welcome. Please advise me via email if you are able to participate. Mark Tyssen President PS. I was banned at my son’s wedding on Saturday 18th May to have within my speech ‘dad jokes & oneliners. ‘

TRIP REPORTS My Visit To Subaxtreme By Martin Foot Just before Easter, I visited Subaxtreme in Goulburn to have a bullbar fitted to my 2015 Forester 2.0 D-S. I’d chosen to have the lower part colour matched to the body and the upper in polished aluminium. I’m very happy with the result! Over the years, I’ve had three vehicles fitted with front bars. In 2016 they proved their worth when a roo crossed in font of us and got her timing wrong. We were able to continue with only the loss of driving lights.
Henry with his new bullbar
While I was there, Subaxtreme had a 2019 Forester on site for a bullbar. This was a challenge for them as Subaru have moved the Forester to a generic platform along with the Impreza and XV. As a result, the radiator support member is lower and further forward. This has necessitated a combined bullbar and bash plate in one and the approach angle has unavoidably suffered as a result. Subaxtreme have developed a new rear bar, for models up to 2007. They have moved away from the original design, because of the cost in fabrication and adopted a simpler, yet more practical tubular structure. Bearings are now sealed, electrical wiring is external rather than fed through the arm, it uses a 50mm hitch and the wheel carrier is adjustable for wheel size and forward/aft position. They were just waiting on engineering certification before putting this new bar on the market. They expect it to be priced well under that of the previous model. So far, there’s nothing on the horizon for later Foresters. Here’s hoping!

TRIP REPORTS CONT. Anzac Day Keppels Hut and Falls trip. By Rick Koster We had decided to meet at Marysville near the information centre at 10.00 am to allow enough time to get through the day comfortably. Tim was first to arrive with Rick and Josh not to far behind and David, Anthony and Justin soon after. David had biting "caffeine beetles" and was in need of COFFEE. I suggested we drive for 10-15 minutes to more pleasant surroundings at Phantom Falls and enjoy a coffee fix there. We then boarded our vehicles and the journey was in motion! After turning right at the roundabout n Marysville heading towards Lake Mountain we soon departed the bitumen, exiting left onto Lady Talbot Drive. A short "EASY" drive later we arrived at our first destination, Phantom Falls. After a quick discussion it was decided to do the "medium" traverse to the falls before returning for the long awaited coffee consumption. YAY! David had pulled out his cup and thermos of hot water before doing a thorough search of his car for that all important crucial ingredient which seemed to have gone missing. Apparently still on the kitchen bench at home! Fortunately there was enough coffee to go around and silence the cravings. It was soon time to press on further, so after hanging some "L" plates on the Suby I handed the steering wheel over to Josh and gave him a drive. We continued on up Lady Talbot Drive for a few kms before arriving at our next stop, Keppels Falls. We all embarked on the "easy-medium" 2km return journey to the falls which proved to be very enjoyable. A bit of time was spent at the falls taking in its surroundings. After returning to the cars, David asked how far it was to the hut and I replied that it was approximately 5-6 kms. I came to realize later in the day it was more like 12-13kms. After leaving Keppels Falls we continued up Lady Talbot Drive until we reached Boundary track off to the right which then took us on to Keppels Hut Track. The journey to this point had been fairly "EASY" but from there changed to "MEDIUM". Josh's smile got bigger as he was still operating 11
TRIP REPORTS CONT. the steering wheel and having fun! With a bit of guidance we managed to safely "wobble" our way to the hut. There were a few other vehicles parked there with their occupants down at the hut, so we decided to have lunch first before visiting the hut. A nice warm spot in the sun was found where we could settle as it was a bit cool in the shade. Whilst lunching the other people returned to there vehicles and departed. After our chat and chew we went and explored the hut and its surroundings. The hut had been burnt down in the black Saturday fires but was rebuilt with a pre fab structure. There were some basic supplies in the hut to assist anyone who may find themselves trapped there due to unexpected weather or whatever. After the hut exploration we had some discussions as to either heading north up Mcfadyen Track making our way to Rubicon or back tracking to Lady Talbot Drive and heading over to Mt Margaret Track to come out at Buxton. The Buxton option was decided given the hour of the day. After removing the "L" plates I took possession of the steering wheel again so we could move a bit quicker. After back tracking and heading west down Mt Margaret Track we encountered three vehicles towing horse floats which slowed us up for a while before they realised we were there and finally let us past. We finally got to Marysville Buxton Rd and turned right towards Buxton where we stopped at a park for another coffee before heading home. It was a good opportunity for Dave to enjoy a coffee sample from Keppels Hut. From there we said our goodbyes and made our way home. I think a good time was had by all! TRIP REPORTS FROM THE PAST Queens Birthday Long Weekend - 2013 (based at Frog Hollow, Churchill) By Jamie Scott Friday morning l awoke to the sound of rain, not good, but it stopped around lunch time and fined up a ripper. Les arrived about 3pm, then we had a visitor turn up. Its Peter Mynard who called in to see what was going on. So l lit the pot belly up ready for the weekend and around dark time we lit the ( BIG FIRE ). Then Elaine turned up, so we had tea and sat around the fire and went to bed. Saturday in the morning, Doug turned up, then Stephen & Liz and Peter & Kate. A good mate of mine David turned up just as we were going for a short drive around. We found a few slippery spots and some mud to drive thru. l had got a message that Martin & Dot were there and Andrew & Lisa on the way back we found nice little side bank to drive along. Back at base camp, Dale & Jan turned up and set up camp. We cooked tea, then Nick & Jason arrived. l work with these two and they came out for a few drinks and to sit around the fire. Most of us headed off for a short night drive to see the lights in the area around the power station. We went out and up. We went to a place above my place - what a great view (l think that all would say the same) and then back to camp. The fire was great to keep warm by, until you had to get into your sleeping bag. Sunday was a very cool morning, where someone had to do some repair to their Subaru, a CV boot. With it all fixed and running a little late time to go. Off we went. Someone got a lolly when they shut the gate for me! Out and around to Loy Yang Power station. After here we turned off, ready for some good driving zig zag-ing our way across to Holey Plains State Park. The first stop was at Harrier Swamp for lunch. The swamp was dry. Along a few sandy tracks to Honey Suckle Hill trig point, with some fun driving between the areas, to Clear Lake loop track. After here there was a good sandy wide open area. l drove up to the top. As l was going along, l looked back, what a sight! Subarus were going all over the place you had to see it. Stopping at Holey Hill for a break, we back-tracked some of the area to re-drive the sandy spot. Back on the black top, down. Then we turned off for short drive thru the pine forest. 13
TRIP REPORTS FROM THE PAST CONT. This was nice and grassy, around to where l had found a fenced off area, where there was a plant trial site. At this point some one was running low on fuel they left us and headed for Rosedale. We went along boundary track up & down, around we went, to where Martin & Dot left us to head home. From Willung to Hiamdale to Gormandale, we took some back roads back to camp. A good day out. Back to the fire to warm up we need more wood ( no small pieces, just big pieces) Monday most people were packing to go home. Les, Doug and I went for a short drive to show Doug some downhill mountain bike tracks. We went up to Mt Hooghly at 700 metres. It was a good view then we went around to one more lookout just near my place. Doug enjoyed the sites. On the way back Doug headed home and we went back to camp for to pack and go home. Thanks for coming, hope you enjoyed the long weekend. l will re-run this trip when it’s a lot warmer and the flowers should be out. Weekend campers: Trip leader: Jamie Scott, Land Cruiser Les Scott & Elaine Hyde, Brumby standard plus Doug Greenall, Forester Stephen Whittaker & Liz, Forester Martin & Dot, Forester Dale & Jan, Forester Andrew & Lisa, Holden Rodeo David Ward, Nissan: Saturday day drive & stayed Saturday night Visitor & Day trips Saturday & Sunday Peter & Kate Mynard, L series ( Blue bird ) Nick A Pinero Jason P Pinero

Fees 2019/20. A proposal had been circulated to members prior to the meeting. Attached to this was an indicative budget, presenting various scenarios depending on the number of members and the actual fees set. Angela spoke to the proposal to members with the assistance of a Powerpoint presentation, at the conclusion of which, it was moved by Angela and seconded by Martin that the fee structure proposed by Committee be adopted. In the discussion that followed people proposed various ways to reduce the proposed deficit. There was general agreement that the budget should be framed conservatively and any improvement (such as income from fundraising) would be a bonus. The Motion was put and was CARRIED unanimously. The fee structure adopted was: Family/Joint
$95.00
Family/Joint (Seniors)
$90.00
Singles
$85.00
Single (Seniors)
$80.00
