are for Alliant International University and are submitted as part of your application material to the Admissions Processing Center. Submit the application and all supporting material (essay, fees, transcripts) in one envelope. In the event that your school does not issue sealed official transcripts to students, you can request that official copies of your transcripts be sent directly from the registrar’s office to the Admissions Processing Center. It is your responsibility to see that transcripts reach the Admissions Processing Center by the appropriate application deadline. In order to meet the deadline it is often necessary to send transcripts on which fall semester grades have not yet been posted. If this is the case, supplementary transcripts should be provided as soon as possible. In cases where registrars are backed up with transcript requests or it is very near the application deadline, applicants should submit photocopies of transcripts in the interim. If we do not receive an official set of transcripts, your application will be considered incomplete. *International applicants see page 5 for further instructions. 4. Form E: GPA Exemption Petition

1. Form A and B: Application and Program Supplement Required for all applicants. See forms on pages 7 and 9. 2. Non-refundable Application Fee Required for all applicants: $70 Doctoral. If you would like to request a fee waiver, you must submit your request in writing with an explanation of your current financial circumstances and your prior year Federal Income Tax Form 1040 if one was filed. Please enclose these documents with your application materials. If you do not submit both the written statement of fee waiver request and the documentation, you will not be considered for a fee waiver. 3. Transcripts Required for all applicants. Required only if any GPA is under 3.0. Alliant International University requires that applicants have an undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) overall and psychology (if applicable) minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If your calculations show that you have a GPA below 3.0 from any institution in any degree program, or in any other calculated subject or major required by the program, you must submit a GPA exemption petition requesting an exemption from this academic requirement. Use the GPA exemption petition Form E on page 13. The form allows you to provide a statement of exception or submit additional material that would document your ability to perform in an intensive academic environment. 5. Resume/Curriculum Vita Required for all applicants. Attach an up-to-date resume/curriculum vita to your application materials. Describe each work position you have held including the name of the organization, job title, work duties, and dates of employment. 6. Essay Required for all applicants. The essay is an extremely important part of the application. See page 5 for essay instructions.

7. Course Descriptions

10. GRE, GMAT* and MAT Scores

Course descriptions are required in the following instance: 1. If you are petitioning to receive Credit for Previous Graduate Work, you must submit a detailed coursework portfolio which includes course outlines, syllabi, or letters from instructors describing specific course content for all relevant graduate courses completed. If coursework was taken at more than one institution, indicate the institution where each course was taken. For more information on Credit for Previous Graduate Work, see page 5.

Optional. Standardized test scores such as the Graduate Record Examination, Graduate Management Admissions Test, and Miller Analogies Test are not required by Alliant International University. However, applicants who have taken these tests are encouraged to have their test reports sent to the admissions office for consideration along with their other application materials. Those wishing to have their scores considered in the admissions process should include a letter stating this intent.

All coursework used to fulfill requirements for any program must have been completed prior to September. All coursework must have been taken at fully accredited institutions.

8. Form F: TOEFL, TWE The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE) are required for non-native speakers. Students whose native language is not English or who have not earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited U.S. higher education institution are required to show English proficiency by taking the TOEFL. Alliant also requires a minimum score of 5 or higher on the TWE. Some programs may require higher scores. To check on the specific requirements of the academic program to which you are applying, please call 1-866-U-ALLIANT or check the graduate admissions section of our website, www.alliant.edu/admissions. Please contact TOEFL directly to request an official score report; Alliant’s TOEFL code is 4039. Please note that academic performance at Alliant may reveal the necessity for further English language study by any student. The University reserves the right to make the final determination of a student’s English proficiency in all cases.

Please consult the Alliant International University Catalog for more detailed information regarding the University and its policies and procedures (see http://graduate.alliant.edu). If you have any questions about the admissions process, contact the Admissions Processing Center. All recommendations should be submitted on Alliant International University forms. We are interested in quantified information in the areas we ask about on the recommendation forms; therefore generic information will not be as supportive of your application as will our forms. There is a copy of Form G in the back of this application packet on pages 15-16; please make additional copies as necessary. The recommendations should be from persons familiar with your work, your potential for graduate study, and particularly your demonstrated leadership abilities, your accomplishments as a leader, and your leadership potential.

Alliant International University Admissions Policies

Agreement and deposit are due two weeks after the date of the letter of notification.

Review Process

If a response is not received by the date specified, the place will be offered to another applicant. Students who decide not to accept an offer of admission from an Alliant campus are urged to notify the campus in writing as soon as possible so that their places may be offered to other applicants.

Applications and supporting documents are reviewed by the Admissions Processing Center for completeness and then sent to each applicant’s first-choice campus. The designated faculty member or review committee examines all applications and decides which of those candidates who meet the academic entry requirements should be interviewed. Final admissions decisions are made after the results of the interviews have been reviewed. Incomplete Applications We are unable to review incomplete files and fees are not refunded under these circumstances. Alliant International University does not guarantee review of applications which are incomplete or completed late. Reapplication If you have applied to Alliant International University (or CSPP or USIU) in a prior year you must submit a new application form, fees, and essay. Transcripts, course descriptions, and letters of recommendation are usually kept on file for one year and thus need not be resubmitted if you are applying within one year of submitting a previous application. However, transcripts of any additional coursework must be sent to us, and since it is our policy to destroy recommendations for enrolling students, under some circumstances this material is not available in a subsequent year. If you are a reapplicant, you are considered for admission on the basis of your new application. Applicants may attempt to gain admission to Alliant three times. They may apply in three separate years, to three separate specialties or degree programs, or a combination. Alliant will not accept further applications from individuals who fail to gain admittance after three attempts. Notification of Decisions The reasons for a program’s decision to decline admission are not shared with the applicant. Alliant International University receives many more applications which meet our basic requirements than there are places available. If you are admitted while continuing graduate or undergraduate coursework, you are expected to maintain the standard of academic performance on which your admission is based until enrollment; failure to do so may void the Acceptance Agreement. Therefore, if you are admitted you must submit transcripts of all work completed between acceptance and enrollment prior to fall registration.

Fee waivers for all programs (both application and interview fees) are available to on-time applicants with demonstrated need on a very limited basis. Applicants desiring a fee waiver should contact the Admissions Processing Center well in advance of the application deadline for further information about establishing fee waiver eligibility. International Applicants Alliant International University welcomes international applicants whose academic work and English proficiency is of the highest level. All international students must carry a full course load in their program in order to qualify for an I-20 certification. All international students must submit the documents described under the Admissions Requirements section of this supplement on pages 5-6. In addition to the requirements listed above, International applicants should submit the following: • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and/or the Test of Written English (TWE): see item 8 on page 3. You must submit an evaluation from a foreign educational credential evaluation service agency. The evaluation must contain the following: • degree equivalency to a 4 year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university • U.S. semester credit and grade equivalent for each course • U.S. grade point average • master level courses/degrees should also be included in the evaluation if applicable To locate an agency, go to: www.naces.org

Acceptance and Matriculation Deposit

• Alliant International Student Financial Certification Form. This form must be completed and submitted if you are not a U.S. citizen and have not been classified by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services as a permanent resident. In addition, students must provide an original and most current bank statement showing the required U.S. funds for studying at Alliant. Students accompanied by other family members must certify additional U.S. funds per year for each dependent. Students from Canada or Mexico who periodically commute to Executive Format courses need not complete this form or submit any bank statement.

An applicant to Alliant must sign and return the Acceptance Agreement and submit a new student deposit to hold a place in the class. This fee is $600 for doctoral students. The Acceptance

• A transfer verification form (if student is presently attending an institution in the United States). INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) regulations require that you maintain a

full-time student status while in the U.S. on a student visa. Alliant reserves the right to require further certification of finances or advance payment of tuition and fees from students whose funds originate in countries where severe currency restrictions exist. • A copy of student’s passport.

Non-Degree Study Students registered in non-degree (or non-matriculated) status may not earn an Alliant International University degree, must register on a space-available basis, and may not apply more than nine units of non-degree status Alliant International University academic work toward an Alliant International University degree. Some courses are not available on a non-degree basis. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, only enrolled students, not non-matriculated applicants, have access to academic records including the application material on file at Alliant International University. All documents presented for admission or evaluation of credit become the property of Alliant International University and may not be returned to the applicants. Therefore, please keep copies of all the information you submit to us. All material is kept on file for one year; it is not kept on file indefinitely.

Essay Topics for the PhD in Leadership Program (6–7 pages typed double-spaced, total) Please prepare a personal Statement of Purpose that addresses the following, using separate sections for each part. Please put your name and the page number on the top of each page. Keep in mind that your essay speaks for you as a leader, as well as a potential graduate student. A. Describe your personal objectives in applying to the PhD in Leadership Program. Also discuss why you are attracted to studying at the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management at Alliant International University. B. Write a brief autobiographical sketch, highlighting your leadership experience in general. C. In a few paragraphs, focus in detail on one specific, important leadership experience in your career. Describe the situation you faced, your actions, the results of your leadership, and any lessons you learned about leadership and/or yourself. D. Although we recognize that your specific areas of interest may change over the course of your training, please describe a research topic related to leadership that you might like to explore during your studies at the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management. Please be as specific as possible. Interviews

Admissions Requirements Please review these requirements carefully. Although you may not have the required courses at the time of application, required courses must be completed prior to enrollment. 1. Undergraduate Degree

Finalists for admission to all programs are required to be interviewed. In a few rare cases, Alliant International University uses telephone interviews, especially in cases where applicants live outside North America (the United States, Canada, and Mexico). The cost of these interviews is borne by the applicant.

You must hold or be eligible for an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution prior to entry.

The majority of the program interviews are held at Alliant International University beginning in December and continuing through April.

2. General Academic Ability

Entry Level and Credit for Previous Graduate Work

You must have a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale overall or submit a Grade Point Average Exemption Petition (see pages 2 and 13). Both undergraduate and graduate work will be evaluated.

Entry at the graduate level means you are enrolling in the basic curriculum as outlined by the program. Almost all students enter at this level. All applicants must meet the graduate entry level requirements. If, in addition to meeting the graduate entry level requirements, you also have graduate work you may be able to receive credit for a limited number of graduate units to be used as transfer credit or challenged for the first and second years of the program provided equivalency criteria are met. Not all programs offer this advanced credit option. Coursework must have been taken at the graduate level at an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and completed within the last 7 years. Acceptance of transfer/waiver credits is based upon rigorous demonstration by the applicant of course content and achievement of professional competencies. Some credits may be granted upon admission based on your application information. Other credits may be granted on a case-by-case evaluation done by the program

3. Personal and Non-Academic Factors Non-academic factors are evaluated using: • Essay (see required topics below) • Two recommendations

• An interview (required for finalists for admission)

5

dean/director. For more information on waiver of program requirements or non-core courses, contact the campus Admissions Office. If you wish to make these comparisons on a preliminary basis, you may consult the course descriptions in the Alliant International University catalog. Final decisions regarding equivalency are made by each campus and based on course content as well as on course title. It is unlikely that receiving credit for previous graduate work will significantly decrease the duration of your program. After receiving transfer credit, students usually enroll in fewer units per term and instead have time for scholarly or research contributions or part-time employment. The Leadership Program may grant up to fifteen units toward the doctoral program. An applicant’s academic preparation and coursework equivalency, both undergraduate and graduate, will be evaluated by the campus admissions committee.

Other Program Information and Reminders Full-time/Part-time Status Students enrolled during the fall and spring semesters are considered to be full-time if they are enrolled in 8 or more units per term. Those enrolled in a summer session are considered to be full-time if they are taking 5 or more units per term. Students taking less than these amounts are considered part-time. Full-time status is required in two instances: 1) To be eligible to receive Alliant International University Scholarship and Federal Perkins Loans 2) To be eligible to attend on a student visa. Thus, international students should work closely with Alliant International University staff to make sure they are enrolled for the requisite number of units in order to meet Department of Immigration requirements. Resume/Curriculum Vita All applicants are asked to include a current curriculum vita or resume.

6

Additional Requirements for International Students • You must submit an evaluation from a foreign educational credential evaluation service agency. See page 4 for requirements.

• English proficiency must be evidenced by TOEFL results and TWE (see page 3). • The Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization requires that if you are a student who is not a United States citizen or permanent resident, you must verify your ability to pay your expenses during your stay in the U.S. by submission of this form. The Alliant Admissions and Financial Aid Offices will furnish this form upon request. Alliant International University will not issue the I-20 Certification of Eligibility until this certification has been submitted. Please note: International applicants must submit application materials via regular postal service or express mail by the appropriate postmark deadlines. However, because individuals living outside the United States often experience difficulty with application materials arriving in a timely manner, if you are an international applicant who receives a postcard requesting missing documents, you may fax those materials to the Admissions Processing Center at (858) 635-4555 in order to expedite the application process. Applicants are still required to submit original materials, as materials which are faxed will not be considered official documents. If you are an international student and you have a fax number, please submit that number with your application in the event that we need to contact you quickly. (We also urge all students to obtain e-mail to expedite the application process.) I-20 certification is not needed by students commuting to an executive format course.
