August 16 - 7 p.m.
at Anchor D Ranch - Rimbey, Alberta
Mackenzie, Dan, Karen & Garren
It is with great anticipation that I welcome to our 6th annual Pasture Treasures female sale. I am excited about this group of females we offer probably more than any other group we have ever sold. This years’ sale offering is a bit bigger in size, and quite likely the highest in quality that we have ever presented in these kinds of numbers. This is a phenomenal group as a whole. It’s exciting to me with as strong as Simmental bull market that we have, knowing that the majority of these heifers have the potential to pay for themselves with one calf. Where else can you get that kind of return on your invested dollars? Our Fleckvieh division has been working extremely well for us, as they have the base of a 30 year program. The base of this division show the passion and devotion of 30 years of work, and a core group we are extremely proud of. We have seen a big change in our herd bull battery in this group over the past two years. This will be very evident sale day in either sire groups, or service sires. It’s tough to make those changes when the old boys are doing such a good job for us, however change is necessary for growth, and we think you will very much appreciate the new genetics we have incorporated into our herd. A much smaller group of females from our old bulls will be offered, as we will retain more of them for our own program, and the new kids on the block will have a larger representation. Completing the Fullblood section will be guest consignments from Stone Simmentals, R-Five Simmentals, and Porter Ranches. It’s great to have consignments from these people, as their programs are very complimentary to our own. We have personally purchased cattle from all of these herds for ourselves, and I guarantee you that you can buy from any of them knowing you will get quality cattle with first class treatment. 2
Although our Purebred numbers are much smaller in comparison, and a much younger division, I think you will agree when you see them, that we have really raised the bar here. This is a solid set of females, and will all be bred to our new red bull “King Louie”. I’m a bit like a kid at the candy store right now with this portion of our operation, as it has really come together for us, and I feel these genetics are as competitive as our Fullbloods. We eagerly welcome the Snider family as guest consignors this year as well. Their cattle are great, and the people are better, a winning combination. We have always had a strong health protocol, working closely with our veterinarian to ensure the utmost protection, and health needs for our livestock. Anchor D Ranch is extremely excited to announce that we are one of two seed stock herds in all of Canada to be recognized as an Express Verified Plus Herd, through Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd. All our eligible females in the sale will have the Express Verified Seal in the corner of their pictures. More details will be in the Boehringer Brochure available at the sale, but in short it is added value for you our customer. The guest consignors heifers will all be on their own strict health programs, and all come from quality programs. The presentation of the cattle will be the same as in the past, in grass flesh, allowing you to see really what you get. The great part about a sale this early is we have lots of time to get your purchases to you in good weather, and not have to worry about transporting them heavy in calf. This also allows you ampule time to get them blended into your own herds before winter. Of course we can’t forget one of the main objectives of this event is the customer appreciation. This is a special time for us each year, as we are able to get our customers together for some good old fashion fun. “The Wooden Nickel Band” will be back again this year, and we encourage you to either bring your RV’s or grab a room in town, and enjoy this event to the fullest. The kids will have a blast….big or small. This is a must attend event, that I promise you will enjoy. Mark the date down, we hope to see you there August 16, at the ranch. See you there, Dan

“Eve” is no doubt one of the coolest heifers in this years’ offering, and certainly has earned the right to be one of the feature lots. We had a very serious look at her last year to represent “Barbossa” as a calf, but made the decision to hold her and offer her as a bred this year. “Barbossa’s” first set of bull calves were our high selling group in this springs sale. He is bomb proof for calving, and they have great performance. “Eve” comes from a front end cow family that has really begun to surface the past few years. Not only will “Eve” be a solid foundation in any program, she also has the credentials to become a future donor female. Bred to “Imax” is simply icing on the cake. 55

Interestingly this heifer was marked as one of the untouchables, as we have yet to retain a daughter of “Ruby”, as everyone has made their way into the sale. I had full intentions of keeping this one, however with a wee bit of influence from Matt, the fact that her “Razzmatazz” heifer calf this year will go nowhere, she is the first “Barbossa” to be sold, and the first bred to our new bull “Epic”, yep you guessed it, she’s in. I’m not saying I will be happy to see her go, but everything points to the fact she should be offered. The best endorsement I can possibly give her is that she was plucked right from the keeper pen. I honestly feel this is the strongest group of heifers we have offered as a group, so buy with confidence. This is a true gem.

There has been an awful lot of discussion at our place about this one going into the sale. It’s not exactly the easiest task finding a direct “Antonius” daughter anymore, not to mention a Polled one. We all know the capabilities of these “Antonius” cows, and the dollars they return. “Roulette” will be as solid of investment as you will find. The dams’ side of the pedigree is also stacked. Her Grandmother “Lindsay” holds down a really interesting stat. She has produced 6 bull calves, from 5 different sires, of which 5 of them have gone on to work in 5 separate Purebred herds. She entered our donor pen this past fall, and is a cow that at a young age has already contributed a lot to the industry. I have high expectations for her dam “Tango” and I guess the thought of naturally breeding one to “Antonius” sort of tells the tale of my thoughts on her. No gamble with “Roulette”.

(vet feels bred 3 weeks later) “Kelsie” is a very typical “Stride” daughter. She is going to be a big volume female with tons of length, rib, top, huge feet, and pure power. The great part about a female like this is you can virtually breed her to absolutely any bull you want, and you are pretty certain to have an outstanding calf. This is a combination we have used over and over again, crossing “Stride & Razzmatazz”. It doesn’t matter who the sire is or who the dams sire is the results are always the same. Mark my words for dollars invested, this could be the buy of the whole sale, someone is destined to own a great one here.

This past breeding season we sold “Mojito” to XRC Simmentals, after we were done using him. “Zinnia” is a great example of what this great bull has to offer. She is a gorgeous female that not only has the bells and whistles, but has the true look of being a bull producing brood cow. When you study her pedigree you will see a star studded line up that is power packed, with a double shot of Solway Adonis, Monet, Canadian Neff, Native Son, Image, Jahari and Antonius, explains why she’s as good as she is. She is a no brainer; this is just a good investment.

“Zamma” is a heifer that continues to impress me more and more each day. A nice moderate made female, that is so structurally correct, extremely easy fleshing, and very feminine. She will be a female that compiles calving ease and growth. You will notice her extremely small birth weight from just a first calver, but also note that she weighed right up with everyone all along. She will simply be a no nonsense female that should put a marketable calf in the pen every year, and look good doing it. She also has a high probability of being Homozygous Polled. A really nice complete package here. (She will be tested for homozygous polled)

One of the toughest bulls we ever had to replace was “Regis” and there have been some outstanding bulls since his time, but I think we have found his equal. “Barbossa” has more than exceeded my expectations. He is virtually bomb proof in calving. In fact his first calf crop we actually steered a few calves because they were so small at birth. Was that ever a mistake, as they explode after birth, and he actually produced both the top performance bull and heifer, as well as siring our high selling bull (from a heifer) and the high $$ sire group in this springs bull sale. Calving ease on our heifers is our first priority. Don’t get me wrong we want them good too, but we just didn’t expect them to be this good. He is extremely fertile, and an outstanding breeder as well. This spring he was given a group of 55 heifers to breed. Do you think I have confidence in him? You bet I do.

Every year at calving time, one of my biggest hi-lites is when that special one hits the ground, and you just know you’ve got something special. Well “Zikita” was one of those, and was earmarked at an early age as a feature lot for this years’ offering. She is truly one I would have loved to have kept for ourselves; however she is also one that I really feel needs to be shared with the industry. She traces back to our great old “Molly” cow that did a tremendous job for us for several years, and I see no reason why “Zikita” couldn’t follow in her footsteps. The other really exciting part here is how she is bred. The coupon inside could be like holding a blank signed cheque, and will also have 3 of our top cow families right close in its pedigree. A definite must for this falls’ shopping list. 9

This is a heifer that I am going to encourage you to not overlook. I know the trend is dark red, yep she’s yellow, and she’s good. Only because we retained her full sister are we offering her for sale. Her sister was one of my top picks last year, and made it into Mackenzie’s top 5 picks for 4-H. She has turned out to be an outstanding female, raising a knockout “Barbossa” calf. Oh look who “Zelma” is bred to. Her grandmother “Emma” was one of our donor cows, and being a direct daughter of “Romulus” you can already in vision a deep bodied, thick brood cow in your head. “Zelma” will be easy fleshing, moderate, and heavily pigmented, and will be a phenomenal producer. “Zerina” is a really well balanced, nice made female, from a cow who has done a fabulous job for us. Last years’ full sister sold to Willow Creek Simmentals, and this year has a full brother who is a stand out as well. I have always really liked this female, and felt as though she could be one of the feature lots. You will note she is bred for an early February calf, with a later exposure date, as I kept her into AI her, but missed her heat. Being bred to “Barbossa” will produce a very marketable calf moderate in birth, heavily pigmented, and also have a good chance of coming polled. I feel the quality in this years’ sale is above average, and this could be a heifer that may tend to get over looked somewhat. It’s not a sale pitch when I said she could be a feature lot, analyze her, she is really good, and has much to offer.

We added “Epic” into our plans last fall. I originally saw him and his dam at Farm fair. His dam is an amazing cow, and his sire is one of the most impressive individuals I have ever seen. We really wanted to own a “Colossal” son, and when I found one from a cow this good, well we just had to have him. We purchased him more as a cow bull, however with his smooth build, and incredible length I feel he will calve very well. He was only used on a handful of “Barbossa” daughters, so there is already a significant shot of calving ease there. I think the calves from this mating will be phenomenal, and have huge market value. He will be on display sale day, but if you want another opinion talk to Toby or Riley Noble as these are two of the great up and coming cattlemen of our industry and will give you a very honest assessment of him.

The original “Fergie” was one of our donor cows which we purchased from the Richmond Farms herd dispersal as one of the high sellers. We have added several daughters into our herd over the years, and because we still have a significant embryo inventory on her we decided to share this “Fergie” with you. I will be the first to tell you she will not be a front pasture cow however she will be one of those females that will pop out bull calf after bull calf. In fact a couple of her full brothers have been high sellers for us. Breed her right, and just take cheques to the bank, it’s really that simple. She will be a reasonable purchased for one lucky individual sale day.

I’ve been thinking about this one for a long time now, as “Zinoma” is one that has been slated to be in the sale from day #1. She comes from one of our top producing cow families that has a deep history of producing many high sellers. This is a genetic combination that really excites me, and is another where the baby she is carrying, may be worth as much as the dam herself. This is a dark red pigmented “Stride” daughter which isn’t always the easiest to find, but you know they will be deep broody, and powerful. Start thinking about footnotes for the baby inside, it will be a contender.

He was sired by “Maestro” and his dam was the $30,000 “Ultrix” cow, an impressive pedigree to say the least. “Zsa Zsa’s” dam is a beautiful polled “Picasso” daughter, going back to an awesome “Legend” daughter and the famous “Star Gazer” cow family. If you were to hand write a pedigree, you couldn’t make one much better, combined with the fact that not only is she polled but likely homozygous polled, in a thick beefy moderate package. It took me a long time to get her dam “Elexis” purchased, but all good things take time, and she was worth the wait. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that “Zyria” has the credentials to become someone’s future donor cow. Whether she does or doesn’t is your choice, but it’s undeniable that she will be wicked good. I’ve yet to see a “Legend” cow that I haven’t liked, and they are producers. I really wanted to dig in deep for this year’s sale, and I feel the females we offer this year may be the strongest group we have ever offered from top to bottom, and “Isabelle” is just another example of that. This cow family has been as consistent as any we have, and also keep in mind her grandmother “Daisy Duke” was my #1 pick of our heifers that particular year, who was picked to start Mackenzie’s herd. “Tabby & Taffy” are a set of twins from a really nice young “Montana” cow. She raised both these calves, bred right back, and gained some time in the process. These two represent the bloodline from our three top cow families, in “Herlinde, Dorothy Jane & Desiree”. Sure they may be a little bit smaller in size however the genetics are extremely powerful. I remember a pair of sisters, who sold several years ago, and at the time maybe weren’t the biggest or shiniest in the group, but had the goods. The numbers 155S & 156S jog any memories. I didn’t have any intentions on selling any “Razzmatazz” daughters, as we sold him this past year to Pine Creek Simmentals, and I really wanted to keep them all for ourselves. Having said that I also felt we should offer at least one from this great bull, as he contributed so much to our program. So I shed a tear and picked this one, as I felt not only did she represent his sire group well, but perhaps the best. Incredible length of spine, dark cherry red, heavily pigmented, extremely feminine, and oh yes, that fabulous attitude. That’s only the top side, but the bottom goes back to the great “Desiree” cow family. No need to say more. If you’re only looking to purchase one female all fall, then I may suggest to mark “Zavanna” high on that wish list. 17

The only reason I struggled with the decision, is based purely on color. Then I remembered when I first started buying heifers, I went to sales looking for the tans, and spots. True story. With a smaller budget I thought if they were in the sale they had to be good, and I could buy them more reasonable based on color not quality. I like to think some 30 years later that plan paid off pretty well, and laid the path for some pretty awesome cow families. I guess a words of advice, let your pocket book be your gage, but the quality be the judge. “Loranna” is a worthy candidate, don’t overlook her.

As a first calver, her bull calf blew the pack away, and performed at the top of the whole pen, boasting a huge weaning weight, and yearling weight. I bred her back to “Imax” this year, and she has a tremendous bull calf at side. I liked this cross so well I figured it should work on the daughter as well, so “Annie” is mated the same way, and I think this will be a superb cross. Some of you may remember “Vanessa” from our 2nd sale, where she ended up being our 2nd high seller. Chris & Diane Ross purchased her and have 3 cows on shares with us, but have decided to pursue other ventures. As “Vanessa” is the only one with a heifer calf, the pair will be offered for sale. They come with a long list of credentials. “Vanessa’s” dam “Emily” has been a solid producer for us, still going strong at age 14, and holding an impressive $8000+ average on her natural calves. “Vanessa” has had full brothers work for Stone Simmentals, Lewis Farms, and Wolfe Farms, as well as several brothers in numerous commercial herds. Her first daughter sold to Lone Stone farms, in last years’ sale. She not only raised a set of twins on her own last year, but picked up about a month in calving time in doing so. Her full sister produced our high selling heifer a few years ago as well, who incidentally is a full sister by blood to “Serena”. I know we’ve talked a lot about the cow, but don’t pass “Serena” by, she has the goods as well. This is a golden opportunity to buy into a proven line, a young cow just pulling into the hi-lite of production, or a heifer calf with an incredible future ahead of her. A bit of a twist in pedigrees this time. “Gina’s” dam is a solid dark red smooth polled 3/4 Fleckvieh “Picasso” daughter. This is a tremendous opportunity to add some different genetics into a purebred program, and add the Fleckvieh influence in the process. “Gina’s” sire “Terminator” is a sire who added outstanding carcass traits, performance, calving ease, and as a bonus was homozygous polled too. WOW!! I think I’ve lost my mind putting “Red Fox” in the sale. Our red program is much younger than our Fleckvieh program, so it’s really tough to part with a female that I think we could develop a whole core around, however we also need to show everyone we are serious about this part of our program, and I can think of no better way than presenting “Red Fox” to you. We started our red’s with a small group of females, and took some of our top Fleckvieh cows and bred them red a couple times to add females. This is the base of this cow family, going back to probably our best “Rogant” cow we had. This is a cow family that produces bred to anything, adds power and moderates birth weights. Everything we all want. She is the first “Wolfman” daughter to sell, and is probably homozygous polled. No mess •in around here have your hammer cocked. 23 23

This is Garren’s heifer, born Christmas day. Another of these great “Wolfman” daughters to be offered for sale, and she’s a dandy! She is super dark red, coming from a solid black cow. This is another cow family that has done a bang up job raising bulls, adding performance and moderating birth weights. “Red Pearl” may have the best hair coat of all the heifers in the sale this year, has lots of eye appeal, and has an extremely high probability of being homozygous polled as well. Her breeding should result in pretty much the same as what you already see, as “King Louie & Wolfman” are very, very similar. If she wasn’t Garren’s she would likely have stayed in our own herd, very nice heifer.

“Zoltana” is a 3/4 sister to lot #29, and has a heavy Fleckvieh influence as well. She is a real classy looking individual, and will develop into a tremendous brood cow. Her dam is a super nice “Red Canadian” daughter, and I honestly feel as though he was one of the best kept secrets out there. He sired outstanding males and females for us that always produced good honest functional cattle. Every sale has a sleeper, “Zoltana” could very well be one. If you are the fortunate buyer, be prepared to be amazed, as she should out produce herself every time. She too is a female that most probably pay for herself with the baby she is carrying inside. Be one of the first to have a “King Louie”, they are going to be great.
Treasure Chest Lot
Every year one of our feature lots is the “Treasure Chest Lot”. We have had lots of fun with it in the past, and it does certainly add a degree of pre-sale excitement. This year will be no different, with a bounty being awarded to at least one lucky person who is able to unscramble the riddle, and figure out what it is.This years’ treasure lot is truly special here are the clues. • You need to guess both to be the • These genetics come early from our start winner. • They dig deep in our program right from the heart • If you figure it out and think that • The sex is unknown, but the quality grand you get it • This mating is from before Aztecs roamed the land • You may be lucky and get a sale • There are two parts to this Anchor D Treasure credit.

We are in the process of building up our black numbers, and honestly “Sweet Dream & Mistress” are a pair of females we should probably be retaining. One of our major focuses has always been to build around cow families. The “Painted Smile” cow family is without question the core of our black cows. She has absolutely every quality we want in a great cow, and these two heifers are granddaughters who have many of those same attributes. I really feel the mating here with “King Louie” is going to blow this one out of the park. This is a cross that I think will be as good as you will find. We all know the job “Dream On” has done, I just think this is as complete of package as you’re going to 26 find. These two heifers are full sisters by blood, and looking at them they could pass for twins. This is a great pair of heifers.

96P is without question one of the best cows we have ever had on our farm. Her conformation is flawless, her disposition original. 96P has been a model cow, a cow that should be the leading matron in an operation that is truly passionate about propagating fullblood cattle. It is without doubt that 96P can still produce the bull of a lifetime, she is the dam of PRL Unlimited 3U who was originally purchased by Jaydawn Farms. It is certainly not easy to offer this cow for sale as she has been a favourite for many years. This is a great opportunity to collect a female that will stand at the front of the herd.

Pasture exposed to Little Man’s Eye Candy 103Z - 767428 - March 20 - May 25, 2013. This is a great opportunity that the Skeels have given us. I could give you that old song and dance about how great this cow and calf are in our program, which is true, but instead I believe that this pair can speak for themselves. We wanted to bring something different to Dan and Karen’s sale. This is a unique cow lot with a pedigree of Caesar x Freedom.Visitors that tour our cattle have singled Sarahlee, our cow, out as being the best Caesar daughter they have seen. She is phenotypically perfect with an outstanding Stubby heifer calf at foot this year, Sarah Raye. This heifer should have a halter on this fall and be taken out to the shows.
Sarah is a young cow with a bright future with the most exceptional heifer calf in our program. They are two of our best animals that we are offering with a pedigree you can trust. Parting with this pair has been a difficult decision; Les Duncan is our partner with this pair, and we have agreed that this sale is a prime opportunity to share these genetics with other Simmental breeders. We still have the 2012 calf of Sarahs’ as well as the mother of Sarah in our herd, so we are pleased to offer these elite genetics to a new program. This cow family has produced some amazing animals for us. We would like the possibility to buy back embryos, if ever Sarah or Sarah Raye were flushed by their new owners. We believe that this pair will be very influential in a red program and are proud to be passing them onto you. Here is a chance that would only come up in a dispersal, the work has been done. Remember you are not only buying a cow or a calf, you are buying a program.
